    You bring up a good point. If this game does have monetization on character appearance, then this game is dead on arrival. The whole point of extraction shooters/games is to progressively change the way your character looks and how powerful they are along with the risk of having everything taken away, that's on the body, when killed. What motivation will anyone have to play an extraction game if you can just buy your way into looking cool? All the risk is gone if your $20 skin will always be with you; that's more valuable than anything else you could scrounge in the map. Maybe they'll focus more on the exploration of the map to unlock further aspects of the world, but that's side content.

    • @frankwainwright7826
      @frankwainwright7826 Год назад +1

      The premise of the games characters is being able to inhabit different cybernetic bodies, like classes or heros, skins suit that type of gameplay really well I kind of doubt that there will be something like in depth armour moreso just obtaining different bodies and maybe upgrades since Bungie usually refine things down and it clearly isn't a hardcore game

      @@frankwainwright7826 Then I truly fail to understand the point of making it an extraction shooter. The point is that you start with NOTHING and progressively gamble your way into becoming more powerful, based on skill. If it's just a numbers game, I can't see this landing. Monetizing appearance is the best way to invalidate someone's work in this type of game.
      This type of thing doesn't matter for most other games, like Destiny, because loot doesn't actually reflect how powerful you are. When you can upgrade pieces of armor, they all suddenly become the same. Other games, like MMOs have transmog bc the visualization of loot (and the actual loot) is again irrelevant to how the game is played.
      For extraction shooters, your appearance is directly correlated to how powerful you are. Being on an even playing field is NOT in the DNA for this genre. It's a shame these big companies haven't figured out a better way to take our money.

    I am actually very skeptical for this new Marathon game because, aside from its art style being nothing like the original Marathon games, it's a Multiplayer PvP Extraction Shooter. This worries me a lot because not only was Marathon a single player oriented franchise (in fact it was basically a game akin to Doom [or a "Doom clone" if you will] for the Mac, a good one no less), but also this means it will very likely be one of those Multiplayer Live Service Games for PlayStation, which means a lot of microtransactions, and that concerns me.
    Extraction Shooters are a good genre to dive into and make games for... but I am not thrilled of doing it in a single player oriented IP that has not seen any new entries in 2 decades. I think Bungie should experiment with Marathon *after* Marathon have had a proper new entry. I prefer Marathon to have a revival akin to Doom where Doom (2016) did everything to stay true to the original Doom games but modernized the formula enough to bring it to new audiences.
    If this new Marathon at least had a proper single player campaign alongside the Multiplayer Extraction Shooter mode, then I'd be more excited than skeptical.

    • @generalcjg
      @generalcjg Год назад +2

      @@Rid_Of_Thee Well, when I said *Doom clone* I didn't exactly mean Marathon was a beat to beat clone of Doom that replicated exactly everything the 1993 game did. It was more of me referencing what FPSs were labeled as back then (as "Doom clones") because of how similar they were since they all borrowed plenty from Doom due to what that game brought to the entire FPS genre (namely the gunplay, level design, and 2D sprite visual design was what most FPSs back then took from Doom), with several of these "Doom clones" having their unique features that made them standout from the rest (like Duke Nukem 3D's protagonist and mature humor for example).
      It took till 1996 with the release of Quake 1 for the FPS genre to stop using the term "Doom clone" since 3D FPSs were starting to be a lot more unique and diverse versus the 2D sprite based FPSs of the early 90s.

Bungie has people that absolutely know how to do community puzzles very well so I have no doubt this is going to be their absolute best playground for these kinds of events. Whats even more clever is that this style encourages a higher degree of community engagement and socializing (something that was never really tapped into as deeply back in the old days before social media). One big gripe I have with extraction shooters is how they are shoot on sight if they don't have an honour system. whether they do a similar system to tarkov's scavs, or the division's rogue system, they should definitely address the shoot on sight mindset. I loved in the division banding together with other players to take down a group of rogues, the occasional backstab, and getting to know what players were like after seeing them multiple times.
    A nice system I can think of is you're a green player if you haven't killed anyone in the past 30 raids, orange if you have, and red if it was recent.
    A reputation system would easily fit into this imo, and would make it much easier for new players to get into and to daily the game without it ripping you apart.

    Would have liked to see the dark gritty aesthetic that Marathon had, especially after Bungie dropped Destiny 1's dark atmosphere for the brighter fun time that Destiny 2 has.
    You're very right on extraction shooters not catering to cosmetic microtransactions. A huge red flag I see with this game is its funded by Tencent, where microtransactions will be the focus and and in Destiny every piece of gear almost can be changed into another gears appearance, something they could carry over into Marathon. Tencent is involved with Activision, so if they have influence which of course they would this may resemble CODs DMZ more than the classic Tarkov.

The vibes I’m getting from this is like when Treyarch forwent a campaign entirely in Black Ops 4 because of how popular battle royale was at the time, and we all saw how well that worked out for them. Halo (and og marathon too) have a an almost grounded scifi military look to everything with some of the more fantastical things being from the forerunners and covenant and even then it’s still a bit grounded. Destiny has a scifi fantasy thing going on which obviously looks completely different from halo. It literally looks like what would happen if you took a fantasy setting with all the medieval stuff and just placed it far into the future. I'm really into single player games, especially retro shooters, and seeing a series like Marathon go the extraction shooter route feels like Halo 4 all over again, chasing a trend that it never needed to in the first place. I guess time will tell, but it just feels really off in so many areas to me.

    • @tTaseric

      The difference there is that Halo 4 still had a campaign. A campaign with a similar format to the prior Halo games, that you can play 10, 20, or even more years later. Even its multiplayer wasn't *that* far off the mark in comparison to other multiplayer FPS experiences. Even without MCC preserving the game, you can still experience Halo 4.
      Marathon being a (presumably live-service) PVP-only extraction shooter means that it will die eventually. In 10, 20, or more years, all of the content will be lost and all of the effort will be for nothing.

    Bungie started as a Mac first/only company that aggressively pushed to show the Mac platform could be a competitor to the PC game market at that time. They invented the “wasd+mouse” control scheme. Marathon was the first FPS that was 3D rather than 2.5D (flat map with a ceiling). They used the terminals to make cutscenes a choice rather than a forced interaction that severed the fantasy of being “in” the world. I’ll be glad to see them come back to this game that I spent as much time in as you have Tarkov!

      Not that it matters since Halo is been put through a wood chipper by 343 anyways
