      Will the key still open the lock if this issue occurs?

    • @dancwilliams
      @dancwilliams 5 лет назад +3

      @@burn31 Yes. If you insert the key and make a 1/4 turn of the lock tumbler you can then press in the tumbler to engage the mechanism to manually unlock the deadbolt. I am sorry if I messed up the names of any technical pieces of a lock.

      @@burn31 Yes, BUT...You must keep pushing as you turn the key until it engages more (that's what Dan means when he mentions 1/4 turn. It might take much more than a 1/4 turn but once the key is actually all the way in, it will work.)

      The stretchiness shouldn't come into play. It's functioning as a rotating coil so when the solenoid spins the little nub on the plastic piece rotates and draws the plastic piece up or down. I fixed three now. The spring is always bunched up. The piece that sets into the coil is a little different on each one. I don't know if a coil needs to be soft to function right. It's probably sensitive to heat and cold cycles which might be the cause of it gradually tightening up. I would think a more rigid coil would work just as fine and not be prone to this cold weather fault.

    We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

    • @mike.s.605
      @mike.s.605 Год назад

      @@videosuperhero100 I suspect that might mean the pin got reinstalled too far up the spring or something. I tested mine several times before reassembling anything and it went back and forth (seemingly correctly) maybe a couple dozen times. Now I'll let it get fully cold again in the outside air and re-test, but I'm thinking it should be ok now.

    • @KLondike5
      @KLondike5 Год назад

      I wonder how the metal locking pin & it's spring positioning affects the solenoid and coil. He put it back together with the pin pointing mostly to the right when it would put more downward force by having the pin facing downward. That should make it easier for the solenoid to release the lock. I would just make a mark so I could tell which way the inner pin was positioned during future reassembly for other reasons. I also just realized after reopening it that having the locking pin positioned near it's left or right edge of its range that it's banging against the stop when the solenoid is trying to slide the plastic piece up or down which could add an inaccuracy over time since it's range is being limited in one direction or the other.

    Perfect video. Repositioning the plastic “thingy” onto the spring was the ticket. I saw another video where the pin fell off. Not my issue. I can also see where a weak battery combined with this spring issue can seem similar. In some cases a new battery might prolong doing this procedure. After a few years I’m guessing everyone will have to do this. Imagine how many people either live with a non functioning lock or got frustrated and threw the lock set out. Schlage should send you a royalty. Thanks boss.

    While you have it apart. Stretch the spring out to make the gaps bigger. This ensures when the pin swivels it actually makes the travel of the pin longer which ensures full range of motion when engaged. I had to do this as my pin would not fully engage once colder than minus 20 here in canada! I think the extreme cold actually makes the spring shrink or coil in and then I wasnt getting the pin to fully engage into the cog

    Thanks for posting this video. The BIG PITA about this issue is that it occurs when it's at the most inconvenient time. Freezing cold outside. At your front door. When you never take that key with you because the code has always worked before. That said, we will use the key until it warms up (in a day or so) and then perform this maintenance fix.

    You Sir, deserve a medal. Mine started malfunctioning just before the 3rd year mark.
    Shlage wants me pay round trip shipping (currently about $50 at the slowest/cheapest rate), can't tell me how long they will have it and won't guarantee it's covered. I might even have to pay for parts and labor (can't quote how much that could be either) if they determine it's not covered.
    In the mean time, I'd have to buy and install another deadbolt while it's out for service. I don't see the point in even offering a warranty.
    I made a mold of the plastic carriage that rides up the spring, cast it in brass, put an eyelet on the end of the actuator that replaces the spring and indexes on the tab of the new brass carriage, then finally lubed with graphite powder. That is how Shlage should have engineered it in the first place. That plastic tab on the plastic carriage is a failure point and I think the spring being so thin is subject to change tension when the temperature fluctuates.

    Thank you, thank you! I've been fighting this problem for about five years. I figured it was because of cold weather and changing viscosity of the lubricant used during manufacture.
    Because of the partial engagement of the pin or pawl over that period, the six-pointed gear was wearing away at the edges. to allow the "J" shaped black plastic part to push the pin further into the gear, I used a utility knife with a new blade to shave some material off the top, flat part of the J and the top of that piece where the flat and curved part of the J meet, next to the spring housing. It made a noticeable difference in the how deep the pin/pawl could be pushed up. I don't use the key bypass function, so I was not concerned about the bypass cam wearing through the top, flat part of the J. seems to be working very well. Thanks again.

    I figured this out yesterday, before seeing this video. I saw a video that said the little spring loaded pin that slides into the gear can come out of place, so I took it apart and found the pin was in place. I hooked up the battery and found it wasn't moving enough to position the pin correctly. I assumed the spring needed to be compressed more, so I compressed it while replacing the plastic part. From what you showed, that might not be needed. But it works. The lock is on a friend's house, so I'll send her this link in case it happens again.

    You literally saved my life. Ive has 10 of these locks, 2 I've thrown away, 4 I fixed with your video. Reason why I use them is because the batteries last forever since the actuator doesn't move the dead bolt (all others that move the deadbolt) tend to fail.

    Update. I had the same issue with 2 of these deadbolts. One on an indoor door and one on an outdoor door so the cold weather theory may not be completely accurate. I had Schlage send me replacements and the same issue again. My fix was to shim the the gap between the plastic slider and the housing it seats against so that the pin sits flush or more flush with the sleeve it rides inside of. One lock needed a felt disc of a certain thickness and the other needed a plastic washer that was a little bit thicker. Both were cut with a scissors to size. You could use a dab of glue but the cover plate should keep everything in place. I'm pretty sure this is the only solution as the solenoid motor in conjunction with the spring acting as a screw is not a very precise piece of engineering in that even if you reset the plastic slide over the spring it will eventually find its way back to the problem position. The other possibility is that the motor just is underpowered or looses power over time or the spring looses memory. Anyway, shimming the slide where it seats was my solution for both. They work perfectly again

    Great video - thanks for posting. I had a similar issue and ended up taking the lock apart to check the components inside. Turns out the battery i used (a non-brand name) wasn't powerful enough to engage the mechanism, so after replacing with a Duracell it worked just fine.

    OMG we have been having the same problem. couldn't figure it out!!! THANK YOU! It worked!!! I had a bit of a hard time holding the little screw back to get the black plastic piece that covers the spring to stay in place. I think the grease from lock got on my thumb and the screw kept falling out but I finally got the screw back in place and the black plastic piece back in place and VOILA. Amazing thank you for the video

      Also... I realized today (-20C), that a fresh battery always makes a difference... anything below 9 Volts(cold) will not work.

      @@sergepaille2424 Thank you, I’m a 74 year old woman and that was my idea once I saw there was a battery in there. I was in the hospital when my daughter and brother put it in and I asked my daughter if there was a battery in it and she said she didn’t know, she didn’t pay attention. So here I am on you tube looking up solutions as to why my door lock doesn’t work now. We’ve had a very cold winter and I know the cold drains batteries so I think that’s the problem I’m going to tackle first. Can spraying WD40 anywhere in there help it work? If so where did you put it?

    This works, I've done it twice before watching this video, but this one is definitely more thorough. Had to do this for the 3rd time again today. I'd like to make a more permanent fix. Have 3 of these locks and only the cold facing one experiences this issue. Roughly 2 years old.

    Get a free new BE365 replacement lock from Schlage. For residential use, these locks have a LIFETIME WARRANTY for Mechanical and Finish (the whole lock except for the Electronics). The Electronics have a 3 year warranty which is defined as the wires i.e if they get damaged. Even then the call center says their warranty is quite lenient. Don’t throw your lock out and buy a new one.
    You can follow the instructions in the above excellent video if you like the challenge of fixing things, but in this case why?
    Also, the comments have some contradictory info:
    - do you contract the spring or do you stretch it with dental floss?
    - do you lubricate the mechanisms and with which lubricant - WD-40, silicone, white lithium grease or dry lubricant?
    We had one lock with an intermittent problem as described in the video. We called Schlage and they said to replace the battery which we did and it did not fix the problem. The keypad still worked but the thubturn continued to spin and spin (I suggest an Alkaline battery from the dollar store. Alkaline is Alkaline so you don’t need a more expensive brand name. Avoid the HD Heavy Duty batteries - don’t last long). That didn’t work. Next they said to do a factory reset - no luck. Next time we called, Schlage they sent an email asking for three pictures (front and back of the lock and the serial number from the front of your owner’s manual - if you no longer have it, you will need to take the back cover off and you will see a sticker with the serial number). Explain the problem and what you have done to rectify it. Add you name, address and phone number. You should receive your new lock in about 7-10 days.
    We had another lock with a cylinder that did not push in to the outside thumbtern. The cylinder is what the key goes into. This means you can’t get into your house if the keypad, lock or battery fails. Our batteries are lasting 4 to 4.5 years here in Toronto. I suggest you test the Key Override when you install the lock and then every few years or at least when you change the battery. Schlage sent an email and in this case only asked for two pictures - front and back of the lock. Explain the problem and what you have done to rectify it. Add you name, address and phone number. You should receive your new lock in about 7-10 days.
    The URL links below go to two youtube channels and explain how to do the Key Override. I found it a bit tricky to perform. One video is from Schlage and one from a homeowner.

    Dude! Thanks a million. Every winter here in New England would cause this lock to stop working. Coming home late at night with my hockey gear and not being able to get into my basement was a huge hassle. I followed the instructions and I believe I am back in business! Thanks again.
    BTW, the guy that suggested putting in a new battery? How dumb do you think we are? Of course, everyone tried that before looking for a solution on RUclips.

    Thanks for this video. I bought my unit about 5 years ago and started having this problem about 6 months ago. I had stopped using my deadbolt altogether once it started slipping since I was afraid it would fail on me and lock me out. Btw, this problem also happens in non-weather related environments. I live in a high rise building (co-op, so I own my apt and responsible for my own upgrades/repairs). It seems this is a general problem, regardless. But easy fix. Thank you.

    I recommend cleaning out the old factory lubricant and applying silicone lubricant. I did this same reset only to discover that my lock was warming up while i did it so it appeared to work. then I would reinstall it and after about a hour it would stop again because it got cold again. Replacing the lubricant with silicone spray fixed it permanently. I just used the blaster brand silicone spray that you can buy at any auto store. It's plastic safe and effective to -40 degrees. Works like new again and I'm going on year 2. Great video!!!!

      I like this idea. I too have had an instance of having the lock fail again this winter. I'm going to head the good advice from everyone here and try some other things to keep it going longer this time. I like the collaboration in resolving this probelm that Schlage obviously isn't addressing.

    Great detailed video! I have watched dozens of videos. I have pulled out the lock taken it apart put it back together dozens of times. Nothing has worked. I have come to realize it is about the amount of tension on that long spring. I had not come to learn just how much tension is correct. I will try it again, thanks for sharing about how to set that spring correctly!
