The atlas meter is really meant for low voltage caps. I use it for sorting and identifying, but not for leakage testing.

A very interesting set of videos on this Carver power amp repair, I have a Carver M1.5t amp purchased in the early to mid 80's that is still working in my secondary stereo system but is starting to develop a problem. The construction of this amp is very disappointing and almost shockingly bad. It was replaced in my main system by a McIntosh MC352 which is of a very conventional design and well built. After seeing this video I will not personally attempt to repair the M1.5t that has a very minor issue. There is a Carver repair center that specializes in these amps it may be a wise decision to send it there eventually. It is 35+ years old now and has served me well.
Took one look at one when i had a shop yrs ago told cust life too short to to work in that thing outputs were shorted his speakers were probably bad too which always overlooked
Those ***# units! A few wound up in the UK running on 240V @ ' 50cps and when just out of warranty most found there way to the company that I worked for then! Spent a long time working out what the designer target was and how far he had missed it by. I do like your PACO c-20 with 'Magic Eye' Haven't used one since the 60's Keep up the good work & vid's.
i got one of these. it developed distortion on one of the channels. an enginener told me the problem was the transistors needed replacing. i ssume he mean the massive array of PA transistors. he said it was beyond economical repir. so should i try and get the parts myself and replace them or should i throw the thing away? iwhich would be a pity becasue i was rather partial to its sound.
i remember those amps in the 80's. they look nice. it seems a little too complicated for me to fix for someone but I might try fixing it for myself. I remember Carver corp. went bankrupt back in the 90s.
I love Carver amps. I have one that has been recapped and had the signal path cleaned up and it sounds wonderful. To each their own I guess. Techs do absolutely hate working on them though as Bob used fuzzy math and Willy Wonka style design philosophy.
The TFM line was much easier to work on than earlier amplifiers he produced. Still a weird design but for the money they're hard to beat. Big current amps that don't weigh 100 lbs and don't double as a space heater.

Carver = headache and poor build quality. They were impressive at that time, until you owned one and then you realized the quality was not there. Been there, bought that back in the day.
Show viewers how to discharge caps first, why don't you? Also, if you don't understand (and you clearly don't) the amp's operating principles, get a service manual.

I bought one of those blue esr meter kits. Have yet to find a capacitor in the field that read bad.

Peavey had the best build quality until they outsourced to China .
Audio Research is better in any way and is made in Minnesota.
