  • In part 1, I perform the initial troubleshooting and repair on a Carver TFM-45. I make some decent progress by recapping and replacing the transistors of both amp modules, but there's just too much work left to make it 1 video.

Love it. Thanks Jebreh Baker. Many more Carver videos on the horizon.

Sometimes the muting fits develop a partial short and that's responsible for the low gain in one channel. Good find on the shorted output transistor. With these class G and class H amplifier designs a short and one of the output transistors does not often result in a blown fuse.

My TFM-75 does this. Its been in the garage for about 20 years now. ty very much for you info.

Thanks for an interesting video! Short pieces of heat-shrink or other tubing can be slipped over adjacent pins to protect against shorting. I use this technique most often when troubleshooting digital ICs using "chip clips".

    Very interesting video!
Love these older carver amps, wish I had the one you worked on
I have a carver TFM-15 that has a similar problem with the right channel giving out a bit less power than the left channel

great series of videos. at 10:24 you wonder the heat compound dots, they have used is as glue, i often do it especially with TO-3 transistors to make sure the mica or silica pads holes are and stay centered on the holes and pins when mounting on the heat sinks.

When your trying to probe high voltage where slipping can cause problems sometimes it's best to clip on to the pin(s), then turn on and measure, turn off...change position and turn on..etc. At the very least use a probe with little exposed area so if you slip your less likely to short out something else.

You need spring hooks for your meter probes - super handy

Owner said replace all 20 power transistors
    and the PS caps ?
huge expense, man could buy a new one, modern, better

Hello, I intend on picking one of these up this weekend. Can you give me an adea of what is cost to do the complete job in parts and the power transistors sperately? Did you make a parts list of all the caps needed? That would help a lot I would appreciate your help. I can provide my contact info. I intend to recap it at minimum. Now looking for the schimatic.

Excellent videos. Perhaps you could increase your volume in the final edit of you videos. It's much quieter than other videos I watch.

Very nice video. I have the Carver M-4.0T, which is basically the same amp. It's very useful to see how you go through it. In diagnosing the level imbalance, I would have started from the input where I knew the levels were the same and kept going to find out where they differed. Is there a reason to start from the output and work backwards?

Thanks for the video. I have the TFM55 every now and then it would make a big popping sound while listening to the music. It also has the popping sound at power on. Where would you suggest where should I look for the problem? Thanks, Louis

Where do you get your schematics and service manuals? It seems that you always have a schematic or manual.

I noticed you are checking the Transistor via continuity is that ok to do, I feel that's the easiest way I seen it done?!

If you don't mind I have a question. I have a TFM-22 that the left speaker output sounds like the speaker is blown. What would be possible reasons?

    • @dualityrepair4770
      @dualityrepair4770  9 месяцев назад

Hi Jay. The speaker itself could be blown, or your TFM-22 could be producing distortion. You can rule out the speaker by just connecting a different speaker to that channel. If it’s the TFM-22 itself, there are many things that could cause distortion. The first thing most people look at are the electrolytic capacitors. If they are original, they could easily be the problem.

@dualityrepair4770 I have switched speakers. The noise only comes from the left channel. I switched left for right at the amp and it went to the other speaker.

At times you seemed to be using the output meters of the amp to troubleshoot. How can one be certain that the amp meters are accurate?

I miss the little screen in inserts where you actually have the schematic and you're tracing out your debugging logic with your pointer on the various passives.

If an amplifier has "Paccom" capacitors inside instead of Nichicon, Elna or other quality brands, I wouldn't bother repairing it.
