You can argue of how much they took from E is For Extinction or The Mutant Massacre for inspiration, but before all the deaths and destruction this was The Hellfire Gala.
Something I always hated in the comics was that the destruction of Genosha was reduced to just bodycount number. Always felt like the whole story was just a lazy way for Marvel editorial to artificially reduce the number of mutants in the books (which they did again with the M-Day). '97 isn't afraid of taking us to the ground and showing what that kind of destruction looks like up close and makes the whole story more impactful because of it.

But this time, they switched it up with Madelyne instead of Emma. And Emma's knowing smirk? Total psychic power move, like she's got the inside scoop on everything
I doubt Emma is aware of their entanglement. Her smirk is a reflection of her personality, she is sassy, and it was her first proper introduction in this sequel. Her demeanor in my opinion was just to set the tone for her character on her first appearance, not an indicator of her "taking joy" in Madelyne's drama, lol.
There's a reason no one cared when Cyclops was with Emma in the comics, while married with Jean. The entire bullshit with Wolverine was so fucked that when he started the thing with Frost, everyone was like "go have your fun".

Moira...most definitely. Jonathan Hickman has explored her storylines in regards to messing up with the future. She's all over his latest issues, Powers of X etc.
In the 90's X-Men TAS cartoon, there's a video on youtube titled "General Magneto leads the X-Men" where Magneto is clearly leading the X-Men in the future so there's definitely a timeline where that happened.
She’s right. Gambit & Rogue were together. Thats why he said at the end of the break “we’ll be just friends” the just didn’t have a normal title because they didn’t have a normal relationship.

Cable being involved suggests to me that this timeline will be modified somehow. I'm not sure if by the end of this season, Gambit will remain dead. We'll see. It seems like Cable knew what would happen, and was trying to prevent it.
@@ligeiasiren4290it would also be echo what Bishop said in episode 3. How the futures always changing because of things people do in the past. But also literally every season of the show had a time travel shenanigans story so it’s par for the course. I see now why the finale is a 3 parter.
The "Wild" Sentinels are {in the comics} rogue units built in an abandoned Master Mold in South America, IIRC. They are much bigger {and stranger} than standard "production line" Sentinels. {You can see "normal" Sentinels being deployed from them during the attack.}
@@Dracobyte I forgot to say that! The smaller ones that are almost insectoid are my favorite. Also, it kinda feels like the ones using the dead local military were a "prototype" for something that came later. The Omega Sentinels. I kinda remember one of the distress calls saying something like "We are under attack! They are bigger than the skyscrapers!" The ones Cassandra sent in the comics were HUGE.
I'm still reeling. We already know a big part of Deadpool & Wolverine is "E is for Extinction". Really was not expecting it TWICE this year! If it hits this hard animated.....
@@scotthewitt258 totally agree, it will really hit harder seeing characters you have loved since the 90s in this action, the storytelling in this episode was phenomenal
I've never read a comic story with Madelyne Pior, but from what I know, it seems this series does her more justice that comics ever have since Cris Cleremont. I'm here for it. And this change of Cyclops "Psychic rapports" makes a lot of sense in this series (I enjoyed these, and their implications, a lot in the comics they are from).
It does she is basically abandoned in the comics and they made her a villian completely the only she cared about as a villian in the comics was her son that was it. I like this more for her she has found a place in genosha and isn’t a villian and she seems happy as she can be without her husband or son. Of course in the comics Scott completely abandoned her and I’m glad this is not the case he is still in contact with her no matter what doing the best he can in the situation he and Madelyn as well as Jean was placed in.
I am in shock. I have goosebumps on my arms. The attention to detail, the echo of sound from the sentinel, the use of Gambits power, the German language and I believe hebrew, the reflection in motorcycle mirror, the eyes capturing the dispair. The emotion felt. I dont know what to say. It was truly the most amazing. I cant put words together
I don’t know if you caught this but when Cable said “No. Not again” that means he’s been trying to stop this at least more than once, but the Watcher is also there, meaning that its a nexus even and can’t be changed. By the way the watcher is in the top left when the fire works first go off and if you don’t know who he is, he’s just a multiversal being who watches over the multiverse and make sure the timelines stay in check and don’t affect other timeslines, just like the name suggests, he watches. now a nexus event is just a major event in history of that timeline which can’t be changed or stopped
The dress Rogue is wearing is similar to the one she wore on her first date with Remy. And the original voice of Gambit, Chris Potter, is the voice of Cable.
Wow, what an episode!! So much drama and so so much I didn’t anticipate happening! Now I can’t wait to find out what happened next! I’m expecting Cable will figure out how to undo what just happened this episode since he said not again
I recently learned about the genocide at Genosha where millions of mutants were killed. But my first thought was, “that’s too dark for them to do in the new X Men cartoon”. I’m sad I was wrong. That was a rough episode to watch. Great story but horrible.
I *love* the variety of mutants we get to see in this episode (reminds me of Wolverine & the X-Men tbh - they should react to that in the future too). I hope we'll also get to see such a large variety of mutants in the MCU when they're finally introduced.
Easily the best assortment of "guest" Mutants since the original Genosha episode. When they were building the Master Mold. I especially loved seeing Jamie Maddox, Exodus, and the "other" Blob. {The one who is living paraffin wax.}
"Genosha" The mutant massacre at Genosha comes directly from the comics and it's (without a doubt) one of the bloodiest and most painful failures in the complicated history between humans and mutants. While the event was not in the comics prior to 1997, incorporating the event masterfully into this animated form is quite interesting, and beautifully done (specially for those who learn the basic timeline of the characters from animated series, movies and tv shows). To an extent, formats like X-Men 97 are good to adapt several storylines and character arcs that shaped this franchise between 1980's and 2000's/2010's (many weekly issues are just filler, but A LOT has happened to the point it is impossible to adapt it in a film or one season of a TV Series, so you may never see that in live action). "Madelyne Prior/Jean Grey" The problem about -Madelyne's- (damn, I fumbled that, but the main idea remains, although major edits will be needed for the next two paragraphs XD): Jean's offering is this: first, she is in the middle of an existencial crisis were a clone took over part of her life, so... is she really into the idea of building a new experience with Logan or just trying to settle for the second option? By acepting, would Logan/you be really pursuing your real feelings or settling with some form of substitute (she may not be into you, but into revenge or evasion... so, is it worth it)? How that works in the long run for everybody (after all, you were trying to woo THE ORIGINAL and win her over what you are, not by some clone involvement that suddenly looks like guessing who has the real feelings for whom). Secondly... what Madelyne wants/thinks? She hasn't resolved her feelings about being a clone and not knowing where her personal identity begins and Jean Grey's ends; she clearly hasn't let go Scott (with who she had a baby), Jean hasn't let go Scott, and is hurt he didn't realize she had been living with a perfect imposter; Madelyine wants Scott, Scott has not decided yet (which is a problem, yet not very easy due to all the baggage involved) and Jean is in the middle of understanding how messed up the situation is or just bailing to the first person that seems to be waiting with open arms (again: is that enough to cement a relationship in the long run; or everyone will regret sticking to the triangle). (end of the edits, pheew) Logan may not be that wise, but he is not as fool as to give into this fantasy where everyone is trying to grasp "what feels better" (Scott's "I had a baby with her, so I should still talk to her"; Madelyne's "I had a baby with him... so maybe I'm more entitled to the identity" and Jean's "I'm the original, don't accept duplicates"); just because it tickles a personal interest. Maybe, in an imperfect (but not mutant) paralel we could equal it to being seduced by a twin sibling, after the first one has openly rejected you (and even started a life with someone else). Of course there are no laws against doing it... but how fucked up that would be for all those involved? How much work among all the involved it would require so family meetings and family relationships are not a disaster (I'm sure, somewhere, someone, has gone down this path; kudos if it eventually worked)? As it's usual, the drama of regular life goes out of the scale due to mutant powers and superpowered beings and clones... and yeah, we can say X-Men (and many Marvel titles) are wonderful overcharged soap operas XD. Nice reaction and see you in the next one.
Growing up I used to watch the original x men animated series, Batman, Superman, jla, teen titans, spiderman etc. I love them all. But when they announced the new x men animated series of the original I thought I would not like it or love it at all. But..... I was wrong....this animated series is so FREAKING GOOD. This series is becoming my favourite Marvel animated series of all time.
Jean watched Scott and Madelyne kiss. It wasn’t just an “in their head” thing which typically means a daydream that isn’t real. They consciously kissed on the astral plane. That actually means more to Jean than a physical kiss as that psychic rapport is their uniquely shared thing. Yeah, and Jean kissed Logan. They all have issues. Kudos to Logan though for immediately backing out and without a fuss. Yeah he longs for Jean butt he’s not about to hurt her and Scott to get her, and that’s saying something considering he doesn’t like Scott much. These are my two cents; your opinion may vary. .
The Death of Superman reference was spot on. Also, kinda funny because I just watched The Reel Rejects react to this, and Greg said the exact same thing.
13:15 Rewatching this episode and I just realize something huge!!!! If you listen closely to the music, it's almost a little similar to the first episode where Madeline Pryor had the vision when she was pregnant with Cable! Not to mention, when he disappears back to the future and says, "I'm sorry mom." You'll see in her vision that a dusty vortax with a slight humanoid face, saying the exact same words, just slightly disoriented. Combine with the many graves in the vision, we now see the deaths of many mutants in Genosha etc! This show is a freakin masterpiece! 👏
Rogue to Gambit: I can't feel you Wanda to Vision: I can't feel you. Polaris, Pietro & Wanda will unleash their anger if their Dad(Magneto) dies... It's time for the AVENGERS to act and save their Mutant Friends
clarification for you on Lifedeath and why they are not back to back: the comics they are based on are xmen 186 and 198. it was not planned to be a two parter, hence why the comic is just titled Lifedeath not Lifedeath part 1. but 2-3 years later when they decided to do this storm focused story again they decided to capitalize on the success and popularity of Lifedeath and made Lifedeath II. like episode 3 which condensed over 10 issues and multiple titles into 30 minutes, i believe lifedeath part 2 will be a mix of that comic PLUS x-men 224-227, cause thats when they fought the advarsary, the creature that came at the end of lifedeath part 1.

I cried from the moment Gambit got stabbed. I thought they would get Rogue, but im happy they didn’t
It should have being Rogue. She has kind of an invulnaverability, due to ms marvel powers. They killed my boy 😭😭😭 i already miss him....😢😢😢
@@shalotstagethey will bring him back I just know it
Cable being involved suggests to me that this timeline will be modified somehow. I'm not sure if by the end of this season, Gambit will remain dead.
We'll see. It seems like Cable knew what would happen, and was trying to prevent it.
If Cable doesn’t fix this whole mess i‘ll be upset
@@ligeiasiren4290it would also be echo what Bishop said in episode 3. How the futures always changing because of things people do in the past.
But also literally every season of the show had a time travel shenanigans story so it’s par for the course. I see now why the finale is a 3 parter.
Rogue always want touch Gambit, and now she can touch him. But, Gambit doesn't know if Rogue choose him than Magneto
She chose Magneto f*** Rogue
@SPLASHGOD575 after she kissed him she realized magneto was full of shit and realized she really wanted gambit.
@@bigzaeya9881 Yes, she say "but Remy was right, some things are deeper than skin"
It does help that Mag is old
@@SPLASHGOD575I agree
The "Wild" Sentinels are {in the comics} rogue units built in an abandoned Master Mold in South America, IIRC.
They are much bigger {and stranger} than standard "production line" Sentinels. {You can see "normal" Sentinels being deployed from them during the attack.}
And can use the envirinment to build and improve themselves.
They are bigger than the skyscrapers!"
The ones Cassandra sent in the comics were HUGE.
What Magneto is doing to Gambit is called "son-ing" as in im the dad/alpha/leader/king/above you/.
Magneto stay sonin Gambit.
But Rogue wants Gambit!
Cassandra Nova I think have entered the building, this episode was epic in so many emotional levels!
Very possible if they are following tha story arc in the comics.
@@JamesJohnson-lu5kkwhich is interesting since she's the villain in Deadpool vs wolverine
@@shadowx8145 Deadpool AND Wolverine
It's called a Tri-Sentinel. The stuff with Scott and Maddy actually happened with Emma Frost.
that thing that attacked Genosha is called "The Wild Sentinel Master Mold"
I never expect that, holy sh*t!
Gambit, he went all in and went out with a bang.
Cable's "not again" comment made me think this is not over.
There was a scene with ice melting in glass of whisky and i thought thats attention to detail .
they made Madelyne, Emma Frost! OMG! they're going straight for modern X-men
& next episode we'll get diamond skin Emma Frost after the Genoshan Massacre (they didn't show her death this episode). 💠
I hope emma and shaw go after trask and make him pay
Wolverine is the last person to talk about someone moving on he stuck on Jean like fly paper
He's Literally one of the biggest and oldest hypocrites
My thoughts exactly
They really killed my guy gambit...
I'm a grown 42 year old man, and I yelled out NOOO!
Gambit talk about a great last stand send shivers down me
This story line was the very first X-Men comic I read. To see it play out... Bloody hell!!
Like how Wolverine said “Nuff Said” harkens to that Marvel phrase
"I cant feel you" :(
Best thing marvel has done in YEARS. Honestly amazing
This show just keeps blowing my brains off every week.
Wow, what an episode!! So much drama and so so much I didn’t anticipate happening! Now I can’t wait to find out what happened next! I’m expecting Cable will figure out how to undo what just happened this episode since he said not again
this episode! damn! definitely a 10/10!
I recently learned about the genocide at Genosha where millions of mutants were killed. But my first thought was, “that’s too dark for them to do in the new X Men cartoon”. I’m sad I was wrong. That was a rough episode to watch. Great story but horrible.
Idk if y'all noticed on y'all's side of the reaction when the fireworks are going off there is a still shot of one who watches if you know you know
I *love* the variety of mutants we get to see in this episode (reminds me of Wolverine & the X-Men tbh - they should react to that in the future too).
I hope we'll also get to see such a large variety of mutants in the MCU when they're finally introduced.
Easily the best assortment of "guest" Mutants since the original Genosha episode. When they were building the Master Mold.
I especially loved seeing Jamie Maddox, Exodus, and the "other" Blob. {The one who is living paraffin wax.}
Magneto having a flashback about his childhood oh no that’s never good
"Genosha"
The mutant massacre at Genosha comes directly from the comics and it's (without a doubt) one of the bloodiest and most painful failures in the complicated history between humans and mutants.
"Madelyne Prior/Jean Grey"
The problem about -Madelyne's- (damn, I fumbled that, but the main idea remains, although major edits will be needed for the next two paragraphs XD):
Jean's offering is this: first, she is in the middle of an existencial crisis were a clone took over part of her life, so... is she really into the idea of building a new experience with Logan or just trying to settle for the second option?
(end of the edits, pheew)
Logan may not be that wise, but he is not as fool as to give into this fantasy where everyone is trying to grasp "what feels better" (Scott's "I had a baby with her, so I should still talk to her"; Madelyne's "I had a baby with him... so maybe I'm more entitled to the identity" and Jean's "I'm the original, don't accept duplicates"); just because it tickles a personal interest.
Gambit a goat after today

Growing up I used to watch the original x men animated series, Batman, Superman, jla, teen titans, spiderman etc. I love them all. But when they announced the new x men animated series of the original I thought I would not like it or love it at all. But.....
I was wrong....this animated series is so FREAKING GOOD.
This series is becoming my favourite Marvel animated series of all time.
Not Marvel repeating Wanda's "I can't feel you" scene with Rogue lol
Gambit went out like a damn champion
Jean watched Scott and Madelyne kiss. It wasn’t just an “in their head” thing which typically means a daydream that isn’t real. They consciously kissed on the astral plane. That actually means more to Jean than a physical kiss as that psychic rapport is their uniquely shared thing.
Yeah, and Jean kissed Logan. They all have issues. Kudos to Logan though for immediately backing out and without a fuss. Yeah he longs for Jean butt he’s not about to hurt her and Scott to get her, and that’s saying something considering he doesn’t like Scott much.
These are my two cents; your opinion may vary.
.
18:36 and 19:55 Wanda also said "I cant feel you" to vision in Wanda vision 😢
Fucking love the X-Men, Gambit is Him and Rogue is for the streets
Weird thing to say about someone who has never been able to feel physical affection until the situation arises

The Death of Superman reference was spot on. Also, kinda funny because I just watched The Reel Rejects react to this, and Greg said the exact same thing.
Exactly! 🙏🏽💪
Ngl, I hv no problem w/ it in X-Men '97, but I *really* hope they avoid the love triangle between Jean, Scott & Logan in the MCU.
Me too. I also hope they also avoid the Jean,Scott and Emma Frost love triangle to,unlike they are doing with Jean,Maddie and Scott here.
I wish they had cast Josh Brolin for Cable's voice here, that would be expensive, but so freaking awesome!
Chris Porter's impersonation was spot on...sounded just like Josh Brolin.
Rogue to Gambit:
I can't feel you
Wanda to Vision:
I can't feel you.
Polaris, Pietro & Wanda will unleash their anger if their Dad(Magneto) dies...
It's time for the AVENGERS to act and save their Mutant Friends
I didn't remember a television show with a most perfect episode since The Red Wedding in Game of Thrones.
When you think the show can't get any better, they pull this outta their pockets. This show is amazing.
4:58 I agree! The Phoenix Saga episodes were Masterpieces! Respect to the comics as well! 🙏🏽💪
clarification for you on Lifedeath and why they are not back to back: the comics they are based on are xmen 186 and 198. it was not planned to be a two parter, hence why the comic is just titled Lifedeath not Lifedeath part 1. but 2-3 years later when they decided to do this storm focused story again they decided to capitalize on the success and popularity of Lifedeath and made Lifedeath II. like episode 3 which condensed over 10 issues and multiple titles into 30 minutes, i believe lifedeath part 2 will be a mix of that comic PLUS x-men 224-227, cause thats when they fought the advarsary, the creature that came at the end of lifedeath part 1.
