Water filtering, disinfection and purification master class! Very comprehensive and excellent work as always. After all of that, it still brings me back to the Grayl as the best overall in my mind. It is a bit awkward to carry and has limited capacity per cycle but for a solo application and combined with the PF stainless cup and Millbank bag, it’s a gem and hard to beat.

Very informative. In my experience where a person is located and the season a person is out, freezing temperatures is another detail you should consider when choosing your water collection system.

Remember to not directly dunk your water bottle into a water source because the water on the rim/threads won’t get purified. Great video Dave, thanks for the plethora of information as always.

Is there a "shelf life" to these filters that can disinfect water? The number of gallons was discussed, but do I also need to consider deterioration of the filter over time. Can I put them in the trunk of my vehicle and forget about them?

Nice video. I like to call a good water plan the equivalent to having a CC with a high limit on as roast trop ... you can just keep going as long as you don't run out. I like how you referred to the CDC and demonstrated each item. Very thorough. The water boil & shelter test at basic is probably the most important thing I've ever learned for outdoor survival. Great job!

I’m thankful for this video and learned a lot. I do a lot of fishing, camping day hikes and carry a sawyer as my only back up water source. I’ve never been a situation to use it but now I know truly how ineffective it could be.

Good information but the sources are surface water. Ground water is spring,shallow and deep well. I work as a licensed ground water op for an industrial facility. So I have testing equipment at my work area . The grayl is by far the best way to filter water .
don't let wet filters freeze , , , ,will break membranes

I've been using the Grayl Geopress since 2020 on day trips and backpacking trips. For me it is now my preferred method of treating water.
i used to use a sawyer with a platypus carbon filter inline, Since grayl came out.. its my go to ..

Great video as always. Thank you for properly sharing this information. I've been in the water industry for over 30 years and I see people constantly mislead people on survival water treatment. You did a Great job.
My go-to is the Katadyn Pocket filter. Plus I always have chlorine dioxide not only for water treatment but also medical. I've seen it cure malaria quicker than any pharmaceutical. I will pack a small carbon for any taste issues but, I never run any untreated water through a carbon because the micro-organisms will colonize in the carbon and actually make the water worse with time. In regards to UV, I'm not a fan of it because I have seen too many instances where people have damaged their eye retinas, any turbidity renders it ineffective, and there's no way to verify its effectiveness. I only use UV for lab-grade water.

Years ago my father had some work to do in remote parts of Honduras. This was before the grayl existed and he took along a steripen. Never got sick so I suppose it worked lol these days the grayl is the overall winner despite the bulk and weight.

Great video. I would like to add some details. Activate carbon works by having active sites, not by a strict pore size. The pore size of activated carbon. Activated carbon works mainly by abortions, not filtration. Graly purifiers utilize a combination of activated carbon, electroadsorption, and ion exchange technology to purify water.

Appreciate how you give the pros and limitations of various devices and methods. I am interested in your thoughts on the P&G water purification system. It claims to address all the issues you discussed including some chemicals and heavy metals.

There is a LOT of good information in this video, thank you! I do have one question I have not found an answer for: I live in the Appalachian region of NW PA, and there are several natural seeps on my land, at the base of the the mountain, but just above the ground water creek. Is that water safe, when it comes out of the rock, or does it also need processing to drink?
Good video. Each person is different. I personally love my Grayle along with my mill bag. I also will use a stainless steel bottle with the mill bag then boil my water. I do have a Sawyer and like the fact that it fits on a smart water bottle, plus the Sawyer isn't expensive and a smart water bottle isn't that expensive either.

Katadyn Hiker micro filter. Going for 35 years. .02 absolute pore size. Fiber filbert carbon filter. Prescreen filter. Need more pre filter wrap a coffee filter around the acorn. Need viral, buy the Hiker Pro or just buy the replacement filter cartridge. A bit of hassle with the tubes but have lead many 4 day backpacking trips them. Used to under the Pur brand until sold to Katadyn.

what is your opinion on larger water filters like the Big Berkey for emergency situations where you would stay at home? Are they worth it, do they work, and what level of protection do they provide? Additionally, are there other companies that make something similar you would recommend? Thanks for the video.
very informative video. is there any plan in the future to have those bottle caps for the sawyer filters that will fit Kleen Kanteen large mouth bottles? I do prefer boiling, after pre-filtering, but when I can't I do carry a Sawyer mini.

Here in Wyoming, we use approximately 30 gallons of weed killer each summer on our 1-acre lot.
A chemical type filter here is a must.
Our water is high in alkalinity.

Hey Dave, couple of thoughts.
Any consideration of distillation? It hasn't been used historically outside of chemistry labs for _water_ for a number of reasons. It was clearly used, however, in the back country of the frontier for the distillation of alcohol/spirits. Scientific understanding of germ theory and the like comes after the frontier has largely been tamed, and construction/manufacturing was expensive relative to the needs of the frontier with regards to industrial chemicals and heavy metals.
But now in the modern day, I wonder if there isn't a case to be made for a distillation kit that is near-resource free, at least relative to having to have/buy carbon filter systems. A lot of hikers are using bladders that have tubing or piping that, in my mind, could be multifunctional to connect a boiling bottle and a condensing cup or bottle. We've all done the old scout trick of boiling water in a styrofoam cup, so we know that the water itself will protect components that one might be concerned about melting or being damaged by a fire, and care can be taken in setting up the boiling vessel with a tripod hanger, using coals instead of open flame etc. Those considerations could mitigate some concern of using a bladder drinking tube for this use. Alternatively carrying a small amount of flexible metal tubing could also suffice though I doubt would be as financially viable.
Distillation itself has some disadvantages with care and maintenance as you'll be accumulating all of the things you remove from the water in your boiling vessel, so you will need ample rinsing water, although for rinsing purposes, unpurified water can be used first and then a light rinse with purified water and sterilization in fire should have your vessel cleaned. Distillation also removes basically everything from water including desirable natural salts that aid in hydration and electrolyte balance so ensuring steady salt intake from food sources or salt pills will be more necessary. At the same time, it's beneficial for people who may be more coastal and needing to desalinate ocean water.
Of course in very hot environments solar stills are one way of collecting moisture from atmospheric air or plant life that is fed into them. They're far less effective unless one has a wide area and a lot of time.
The additional uses of having an alembic for medicinals and the like also seem like something to consider, although that's beyond my area of expertise.
The cons that come to mind are of course the care needed in setup and the, lets say "fragility" for lack of a better term of a setup with more pieces and more likelihood of knocking over or what have you. It's also going to take significantly more time than other options, but over the course of a day you should be able to completely distill more than enough water so long as you aren't in an extreme hurry for other reasons.

Does that "lid" also fit the Sawyer Mini?
How do you sufficiently disinfect the exterior of those that must go into the source? And your hands?
Filter slow, watch for frozen hoses and filter parts, might want to sleep with it, always think about digesting your map for finding water ie topography not just reading the trail map and relying on marked water sources. Make sure you can always boil.
Any input on chemicals ? Will they filter chemicals and metals ? Example, Benzene and say Lead ?
Hey Dave, not sure if you’re aware of Purinize Drops but they are supposed to be the only option that removes biological and chemical contaminants by coagulating them. I think they’re a US based company. I carry them as a final option.
Platypus and Katyden make designated separate carbon filters. I do not know the effectiveness of these when paired with a hollow fiber filter like the sawyer or similar.
It might be food for thought.
Ive experimented with myriad devices to treat water over several decades.
Since investing in a Grayl Geopress a few years back, I've got rid of most of my other filters/purifiers.
The Grayl is hands-down the best system I've come across for effectiveness and ease of use.
Owing to this, I'm happy to carry the extra weight it entails.
And regardless of boiling or purifying, I always carry a Millbank bag to combat turbidity.
A significant hazard that you haven't covered of suspended systems like the Sawyer is that, at the same time as clean water is collecting in your receiving container, so is contaminated water that is running down the exterior of the collection bag and over the filter.
For me, this is a major design flaw. Consequently, I have always stayed well clear of this type of filter system.
You're new bespoke 3D printed bottle caps are a great addition as they will eradicate the above problem.
For anyone using such a suspended filter into an open necked bottle, beware! You're running the risk of still drinking contaminated water.

The sawyer squeeze is by far the best filter on the market and is well proven even in 3rd world countries where the water is absolutely filthy. Sawyer also donates loads of filter supplies to 3r world countries and this has significantly reduced water borne illnesses in these areas. Never a full guarantee but sawyer is going to give you a safe drink of water.
