Jump Rings 101: How to Use Jump Rings for Jewelry Making

- Using jump rings is an integral part of making jewellery so today I thought I’d talk about what they are and when and how to use them. Learn how to open a jump ring and close a jump ring correctly. It's important that you open jump rings correctly to avoid damaging them.

Thank you so much. I'm downsizing and was seriously considering passing my jewellery supplies on to another crafter. I'm more into paint & clay, plus I've only taken 2 casual lessons in jewellery years ago which didn't go much into the basics. hi I bought a roll of chain didnt know it would have such small links.the size is2.2x1.9x0 3mm can u tell me what size jump ring I could use. ty
Hi Donna, thank you for your question. It really depends on the gauge of the wire that the chain and jump rings are made of. You will need to measure the gap in the centre of the link and then work out what gauge wire will fit through. As I don't know what gauge the chain is, I can't tell you how large the hole in the centre of the link is and therefore can't tell you what gauge jump ring you will need. Was wondering if these jump rings with the openings stay closed after wearing bracelet a lot
Hi Jaima, yes, most jump rings do stay closed as long as they are appropriate size/weight for the project. For example, if you have a lot of heavy beads, you would choose a heavier weight jump ring. If you're really unsure, you can also use two jump rings together and make that a design feature. The only time I've ever had jump rings fail on me is when they haven't been properly closed.
What is the most common Guadeloupe of jump ring used in jewelry making
Hi Joanne, did you mean the most common gauge of jump ring? It's hard to say as different gauges are used fro different things. I would say probably a 20-22 gauge is most common, but that also depends on the size as smaller jump rings often use a smaller size wire. I hope that helps.
I have learned to not trust jumprings to remain closed, from my experience wearing jewelry with them in the make up.
I'm I terest3d in the hearing or feeling the ring closed. Is there any way to secure it closed, glue or soldering?
Hi Wendy, I used to feel the same way, and have the same problem.
There are two reasons that jump rings fail - the first is that the jump ring isn't closed properly and the second is that the gauge of wire used for the jump ring is too light. Often when you close the jump ring, you can feel it close correctly as it kind of pops into place with a bit of a grating feel. I hope that makes sense. If you hold the jump ring up to the light and look at it from all angles, you shouldn't be able to see any light through the gap.
Long ago I switched to a heavier gauge of jump ring. The gauge depends on the size - for example, a 10mm jump ring in a smaller gauge wire is less sturdy than a 6mm jump ring in the same gauge wire. Therefore, the larger the jump ring, the heavier gauge you should choose.
You can purchase already soldered jump rings, or you could solder them yourself if you are still unsure.

Keep at it - it takes time to learn and lots of practice. It took me literally years to make a good loop and even now, they don't always turn out how I want. Same thing with jump rings. Let me know how it goes.
