The M1 backpacker is a hands down winner here! more comfortable and larger handle than izula, better design, better steel that you do not have to cuddle. Perfect bushcraft knife!
The Backpacker Pro is still the best production small fixed blade I've bought/used to date. I'm bummed I miss out on the S90V European exclusive. Thanks for watching
I've been waiting for this. In fact, I asked Esse about this about 6 months back, and the release beat their projections. They are amazing guys over at Esse. I'm looking forward to putting some cool aftermarket scales on this guy. The knife connection has a crazy huge selection.
ESEE put out great products with the best warranty, Even though I've never needed to use it. I'm hoping they bring out the ESEE 6 in S35VN too! I have 4 sets of TKC G10 scales for Ontario, Becker, And ESEE blades, All top quality in materials/finish. Thanks for watching Matthew
The M1 backpacker is very hard to beat on all counts, even for an undeniably awesome classic design like the Izula. I wish TOPS Knives would make an edc fixed blade in S35VN. That would be epic.
TOPS is one of my favorite knife companies. After I bought the S35VN Camp Creek a few years back, I was hoping for more offerings in the premium Crucible steel. The WRK Backpacker/Pro is easily the standard for all other knives in this category IMO. Top workmanship, Materials, And price make the M1 hard to beat. Thanks for watching
Yes sir! I've been sharing that view to anyone who will listen, After purchasing a couple years back. Ergonomics, Materials, Almost "custom" quality, And overall value. Thanks for watching David and have a good 4th of July weekend.
I just replaced the micarta scales with these G10 scales on my 1095 Izula. It's a vast improvement, much better. Even though I'm happy with the 1095, I might get one in S35VN ... because why not?
I definitely like the way it feels with the full length G10 scales! I agree, An S35VN Izula, What's not to love? Thanks for watching and have a good 4th of July weekend.
I recently got into the small fixed blades myself. I may very well grab this S35 version. I have the 1095 one, and it's a pretty decent knife. I should get the White River. I have their Ursus 45, and I love it, so I have no reason to doubt the Backpacker Pro is of any less quality. Have you ever tried the Blackjack 155, and if so, what do you think of it? I like it better than the Izula, but I don't have the White River so can't compare.. As with any of this type knife, the handles are a must have addition, but they're hard to find for the Blackjack. I recently noticed that Bladematrix has them available. Knifeworks has the best price on the 155, and they still have some of the silver non coated version left. I like the convex edge on the 155, and 154cm is a pretty good steel. I also like the leather sheath, which has a rare earth magnet in it for added security. They're made by Bark River, but I'm pretty sure they are discontinued.
The White River is a step above in Quality to the ESEE IMO. All of their knives I've handled are tip top fit n finish for a production company. I haven't seen the Blackjack 155 yet, I'll definitely check it out. I remember watching TAC RUclips channel a few years ago (guy with face covered) and he always raved about BJ knives! As much I love Bradford, I haven't bought one of his 3.5 or 4.5 (bigger handle no choil) offerings yet. Definitely on my buy list eventually. Thanks for the tip and for watching Timbo. Hope you and your family are well.

For $11.95 you can buy 100ft of paracord in your favorite colors and rewrap the handle for a lifetime. There's a lot of handle wrap patterns, but the very simple clockwise wrap that MKC uses works just fine. The regular Izula OAL is short enough for dress pants pockets, then the Izula II or Xancudo for work pants. The S35VN doesn't need wiped and oiled and won't rust under the paracord or scales like 1095. Always best to clean the knife after use regardless, but if you overlook it one time it won't rust over by morning.
TKC the knife connection has the best scales for The Izula (The extended canvas micarta scales) but they are expensive at $40.I truly prefer the the Izula II size. That 1/2 inch really makes a difference in the hand. So hope Esse comes around & makes the Izula 2 in S35VN. I have to say I was not familiar with the White River M1 Pro Backpacker. Thank you for showing.
I’m thinking about getting one of these myself..I have the BladeHQ exclusive fire ant red 1095 Izula with these same black G-10 scales and it’s a great little knife..I ordered the S35VN ESEE 3 as soon as I was able to find one available.I ended up getting serial number 0054.I also have a 1095 ESEE 4 and a ESEE Junglas
I never noticed the serial number by the lanyard hole before! Tried looking at my video and it looks like 0093 on my ESEE 3! The Izula is such a fantastic knife for a wide range of Tasks. I hope they make a ESEE 6 in S35VN too. Have a good weekend Garrett
Knife Video Channel I agree, the ESEE 6 in S35VN would be great,I would love to see the ESEE 6 in CPM-3V as well.its not stainless but when it cryogenically heat treated its damn close to stainless
Love where ESEE is headed with the S35VN offerings! I have soft spot for small fixed Blades, Especially with premium Stainless steel. The Backpacker Pro is superior in quality and ergos, But not by much. Thanks for watching
ESEE just released it after the Show and I had it on pre order. Love these small fixed blades , Especially in Premium Stainless steel. Thanks for watching my friend
The Backpacker Pro is still the best small fixed blade I've found to date. I heard of a S90V version (European exclusive) I'd love one of those. Thanks for watching
I have an Izula in 1095 with the standard powder coating, which I absolutely adore, but I’ve noticed that it’s a terrible slicer. It handles batoning and other rough stuff just fine, but it’s pretty clumsy for just normal cutting tasks. How does the S35VN Izula or the Backpacker compare to the 1095 Izula in terms of milder, EDC-type cutting tasks?
The Izula at .15 thickness isn't very thin behind the edge and the thick powder coat doesn't help during cutting of "Normal" everyday materials! The Backpacker Pro is .13 thick and the smooth satin finish makes it better for EDC cutting tasks! Thanks for watching
I watched an esee comparison candiru, izula, esse3. The izula is a thick blade! The candiru and esee3 same, izula thicker! There is another video of a guy that loves his izula. Owns many and on his daily carries removed the coating! Reading between lines, he dresses out a lot of game. So he probably loves the bigger belly of the esee. As for slicing.... depends on what you're slicing? I have Japanese vg10 in kitchen that slice stupidly easy. Yet for carrots, sweet potatoes, I grab my cutco 440 chef knife. Maybe its the hollow grind on it. I can't fault Esee on anything their knives serve a purpose. As does the white rivers model1. You're going to have to figure out your needs and buy according? Personally I'll be buying the WR model1. (Backpacker) I think for s35v and the money its just a better value. But I still want candiru or izula2
How do you like s35vn I'm not a big fan. But I only have one knife in it. In my use xhp last way longer. I just don't see a benefit when 1095 is very tough easy to sharpen and doesn't chip. On the other side I think you sold me on the backpacker. I carry a utica neck knife it's amazing but it could use a longer handle. It has a choil that makes it comfortable. I like the esee izula 2 I just don't see the need for s35vn I think it's very over rated for what it is. Just wondering what your experience has been
The Backpacker/Pro is the highest quality Production knife (in this category) with the best ergonomics IMO. Can't say enough about the overall package! I prefer stainless steel in a smaller fixed that I mainly appendix carry! S35VN is much easier to sharpen then S30V, Doesn't chip "out" nearly as much, And is tough enough for MY personal use. Everyone has their personal (in steel) preference and I love 1095 also, Just prefer quality stainless in this size. Thanks for watching TP and have a good 4Th of July weekend.
Can you please make a Video if there is any difference between the steel of the two knives. The izula and the backpacker. I am curious to see who makes the better heath treatment of both companies. Thanks again. Have a great weekend and greetings to your son and to you of course!
The White River will have a higher HRC to optimize edge retention and the ESEE will be a couple points lower(probably 57-58) to give better toughness! Would love to see someone to test both to get exact numbers to confirm. Have a good weekend
Nice! I'm eager to get one myself. I've got five or six Izula/Izula 2 knives, great blades. The G10 scales from TheKnifeConnection are about the best you can get IMO. I really wish they'd do the ESEE-4 in S35VN!😉
I have the TKC Mil Spec G10 scales for RTAK II , Becker BK9, And ESEE 6. Definitely the best scales out there, But these I listed in video work well, Keeping the cost down for the White River comparison. Hopefully we'll see a S35VN 4 And 6 eventually, As there's a market for mid sized Premium Stainless steel blades. Thanks for watching Rob!
Funny you say that about the ESEE 4 S35VN, Total senior moment, As I did a video on the knife when first released not long ago. Thanks for the reminder Garrett
One of my favorites too! I really want to try the non choil 3.5 version, As that's similar to the Backpacker pro in handle profile. Thanks for watching Garrett
Knife Video Channel I agree,I’ve been considering getting the 3.5 and the 4.5..I currently have the 3 and 4 and I love both.I bought the 3 for EDC and went with the flat G-10 scales because I figured there would be a little less of the print sticking out from under my shirt.I bought the 4 to use as a belt knife for camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, etc so I went for the fuller micarta scales and I love them both.I want the 3.5 mostly for another small EDC fixed blade but the 4.5 more for a bushcraft knife.the 4 is a great outdoors knife but the 4.5 not having the finger choil would be a better bushcraft knife as it allows for more grip options...no problem,I’m glad I watched it.it made me realize I really need to add the White River Backpacker to my collection.it looks like an amazing little knife
I really like the Bradford choil knives, Flat and 3D scales for the reasons you mention. The basic 3 in the video was $100 bucks off Amazon long ago and the purchase was inspired by my love of choiled Spydercos with similar handle Designs. I have XL-XXL Sized hands and couldn't believe how well the Lil Native, Native 5, And Para 3 "fit" my hand comfortably in use. I also like to carry my small fixed blades appendix carry horizontally! The flat scaled Guardian 3 was a perfect for that task initially. The only weakness was the leather sheath (leather coming out each time knife was pulled) losing retention over time. The White River M1 was a beautifully made piece with premium steel, That featured a decent Kydex sheath stock for $18 bucks more then the N690 BG3. Bradford offers a small Kydex Sheath on the wharncliffe G3 that I'd love to try along with the 3.5 and 4.5. So many good options in this category.
Hello friend, which one do you currently prefer the izula 2, the Blas Ford or white Rover, which one do you stay with? I’m undecided on which one to buy?
I like the upgrade and the horizontal carry! There's a few companies, Here's who I used. www.armatuscarry.com/store/c39/ESEE_Knives.html Thanks for watching
The scales are bolted (not glued) so water would get in-between the tang and handle. That being said S35VN is stainless, So unless it's a heavy salt water environment the knife should be good. In salt water use I would buy a knife made with LC200N , H1, Or Vanax. Spyderco sells fixed blade in LC and H1. Thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 Ah ok. Thank you for the info! That is a good point. Do people normally just ignore the water that gets into the tang for bolted knives until way later on?
@@knifevideochannel4657 Also, would you happen to have any reccomendation on what type of glue to use for waterproofing handles? What do knife companies typically use?
@@spikechang556 I use Frog Lube paste under the scales (liners in folding knives) on my fixed blades! Old video I made ruclips.net/video/xsriC0c6ojI/видео.html Happy New year
The only way to water proof a fixed blade would be to use special epoxy and scale material that wouldn't absorb moisture. FRN , FRCP, G10, Zytel, Kraton, Acrylic, Etc. There's many to choose from.
weird, i was just trying to find an alternative to my izula 2 with better steel and had been looking at the white river. didn't even come across your video looking for either though, was researching S35V! now i cant decide 😭
As nice as this New premium Izula is, It's tough to beat the awesome quality and price of the M1 Backpacker Pro. Especially when you Factor in the addition of the horizontal/vertical carry Kydex sheath. If your going to keep the knife Skeletonized and/or wrap with Paracord, The Izulas lower cost will not disappoint TBTD! Thanks for watching and drop me a line on how you like whichever you choose.
I do not understand why anyone would want an ESEE is anything other than 1095. It's easy to care for. Stupid simple to sharpen (literally can sharpen on rock with water or spit). Holds an edge much longer than you would think. Is just as tough as any of those "super steels". And it's very affordable. I personally don't want or need any other blade steel than 1095 and I live in the wet wet wet PNW and do a fair amount of fishing even salt water fishing. All I use is 1095 ESEE knives. Infact, I have the ESEE Izula on me right now as it's my EDC.
I agree with you on ESEEs 1095 offerings, I've got a lot of their line. That being said, There's nothing wrong with offering more options, Especially when S35VN was the most requested addition. Thanks for watching Charles
Had the m1 s35vn is a pain to sharpen or there's was. And how the handle slims down it isn't comfortable skinning. Have a purple izula in my hunting bag and it's a lot better to butcher with.
People should learn how to make their own kydex sheaths, if your not a complete numbnut with two left hands you can easily make your own… 30$ for a sheath, i can build myself 5 sheath for 30$…

White River for me!
Is that the g-10 handles? It looks quite different from what I imagined
Yes, G10 3D machined scales. Thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 Ty!
Since the izula is smaller does it carry more comfortably then the back packer ?
I'm still more impressed with the Backpacker then any other knife in this category. Thanks for watching Alex
I need to get one of those sheaths for my Izula and Guardian 3
I have the same Kydex sheath for a Nimbus Finish Guardian 3 With Carbon 3D scales. Love the Bradford offerings. Thanks for watching
Question: how good is the stock sheath that comes with the Izula? Any issues with it? Thanks.
It's usable and better then the Kabar version. I purchased aftermarket kydex for both the Izula and BK14. Thanks for watching
Luv My Izula s35vn Stainless Steel" Amazing EDC Knife!"
Great knife, Thanks for watching
Hope they do this for the izula ii soon
Me too! Love what ESEE is doing with S35VN. Thanks for watching
Fantastic piece it’s a must have
Love where ESEE is going with their S35VN offerings. Hope you and your family are well JNG! Thanks for watching
Do you recommend that kydex sheath? Where can I find one?
I like the upgrade and the horizontal carry! There's a few companies, Here's who I used. www.armatuscarry.com/store/c39/ESEE_Knives.html
Thanks for watching
Is this thing waterproof? Or does it go through the hole or the edges of the handle?
Old video I made ruclips.net/video/xsriC0c6ojI/видео.html
Happy New year
The only way to water proof a fixed blade would be to use special epoxy and scale material that wouldn't absorb moisture.
@@knifevideochannel4657 Just got my M1, I'm in love.
@@ioda006 It's soooo nice! Congrats
Is this the size of the Izula 2 or the 1?
The knife in this video is Izula, The Izula 2 has a slightly bigger handle. Thanks for watching
Is it hard to sharp like S30V steel ?
S35VN was engineered by Crucible and CRKs to have MOST of the qualities of S30V, But be a bit easier to sharpen! Thanks for watching Silencer
I got an Armatus sheath for the backpacker and regret not getting carbon fiber so bad now.
Still one of the best knives out there! Enjoy your Backpacker Fernando. Thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 just got the hi vis yellow and black for a friend. Got em the carbon armatus sheath. Had to see it in person.
Thanks
Thanks for watching
Do you have problems with corrosion being around wet environments like that?
Complimenti per il video. Potrei avere il link vorrei comprare tutti e due i coltelli. Grazie.👍
Thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 Grazie
Got mine just yesterday with the grey micarta scales waiting on my od green architect sheath. I got 0019 whos got 0020?
Congrats Anthony! Going to be a nice setup with the scales and sheath. Thanks for watching
ESEE all day long !!!
Thanks for watching
Had the m1 s35vn is a pain to sharpen or there's was. And how the handle slims down it isn't comfortable skinning. Have a purple izula in my hunting bag and it's a lot better to butcher with.
The Izula has nothing on the White River Backpacker. I own both.
I agree. Thanks for watching

People should learn how to make their own kydex sheaths, if your not a complete numbnut with two left hands you can easily make your own… 30$ for a sheath, i can build myself 5 sheath for 30$…
I agree, But unfortunately a lot of people don't invest in learning/making anything for themselves these days. Thanks for watching DOC
U got 0144 I got 0019
How do you like it so far Anthony? Thanks for watching
