The problem with this channel is that every Monday I want a different guitar. 😂
My main player is a 1991RG 550 in white loaded with 2 dimarIo PAF Pros and a hs2 on the middle. I have custom shops and other high-end guitars the 550 is my go to! Gets played more than any of my others.
Around 2005 or so, I found a 1991 RG550 black, just like that one, in a pawn shop for $150. It was a little beat up cosmetically, a few paint chips on the edge of the body. Snapped it up. Still have it.
Wish I could find an OG RG550 somewhere for a decent price. Had a white one from 90 or 91. Absolutely my favorite guitar I've ever owned or played
I remember when the RG series came out in 1987 and going to the music store and checking them out and being immediately floored by how thin the necks were.
Awesome guitar.I have the first year RG 550 in road flare red think it was 1987 still have it.
I had a white w/ blk pickguard RG-550 that I bought in the early 90s. I probably should have kept it.
Same lol
Had an original RG550 ages ago. Swapped the pups with SD's. Duncan distortion at bridge, Duncan Jazz at the neck with hot rails in the middle. What an insanely awesome upgrade that was. Perfect for this guitar. Considering doing the same to my new RG550 Genesis soon!
Not a pointy guitar guy but there is a spare, understated elegance to that guitar that's very appealing. It isn't trying too hard. Reminds me of that oxblood Jackson from a few weeks back. I think we likely have our winner for the October Guitar of the Month. Wouldn't be surprised to see this one and the oxblood Jackson duke it out for Guitar of the Year assuming SFB holds that poll.
I agree, Steve, man. I still have the first one that I bought in 87, mine did come with the case. It was my work horse back in the day. Still have it, will never let it go.i have 9 Ibanez MIJ 550, Jems - UV love them all. Wonderful guitars. All my charvels model 3, 4, 6, Xl750. Fabulous guitars, all MIJs. Have a couple of USA Jackson's were in all started, but sure, you understand. Love my Ibanez for sure.
These Genesis re-issue RG550 models are great value for money, very versatile, workhorse guitars. Some may argue about the pickups, but I find they sound more than decent if you have a good amp or plugin and in any case, swapping them out for some aftermarket set is very easy.
The only thing I dislike, is the blocky neck heel. I know this is supposed to be a re-issue and the originals had them, but they changed the 1-piece neck & the scarf joint from the OG 550's, so why not go all the way and put an All Access Neckjoint on them?
I really hope they make a Genesis version of the RG1570 in the future, that would be a first day buy from me.
Steve, found in a pawn shop an RG550 in limited run Vampire kiss.. and wanted it sooo badly as it was basically dropped off in its original box.. never played.. but the NUT was off-set toward the treble side which would have needed some work to get right.. rare to see one leave the factory like that.. I did manage to pickup the next day a 1989 RG560 with case for $ 400.. used but in great shape.. LOVE that skinny neck..
I finally got an Ibanez a couple of years ago. An rg550 in the purple finish. I'd been wanting one for years and I'm impressed with it. The body is thicker than a strat and it has sharp corners.
They are a steal for $999 and all of the ones I have tried had amazingly low action with no buzz.
We were at a concert once when the RG hadn't been on the market for long and I stood right in front of the stage and waited until the guitar finally went out of tune, but no matter how many dive bombs the guy did, the guitar didn't go out of tune at all I could see that the strings were hanging completely loose in the area. But that wasn't all, the guy probably had his guitars on stage, about ten of them. At a late hour some guys came into the hall and stole 3 guitars right from the stage, we ran after them but the guys jumped into a waiting car with the guitars and escaped with smoking tires. Of course the RG was stolen too, and the worst thing was that guys were never cought 🤷♂️😄
I think I just found my next guitar. Thanks!
getting a Japanese made guitar for $999 u.s. dollars is an absolute steal.
Some of the Vola guitars made in Japan are $895 and they are awesome guitars.
@@robertvarner8195I was gonna comment the same thing lol. I would love to try one of those Volas! Hell, for a couple hundred more, you could get the next level up, which still isn't a bad price for Japanese built.
As I have said before, it was the best guitar for the money in 1988 and it's the best guitar for the money in 2024.
Amazing dude! I think you don't need more than that guitar! Thank you for this video
I just bought the purple neon 4 months ago and the electric blue one a month and a half ago both with the M300C hardcase from Pitbull Audio. Amazing guitars and beautiful cases. Pitbull may offer you 18% off on the guitar too!
I remember the day that those hit the market ….. it was a complete game changer….. the abuse they can take and still be in tune, effortless to play and wicked variety of sounds …. Still incredible to this day !!! I own multiple and would NEVER not have one !!!
Steve, what do you play thru for your guitar sounds? Im pretty sure your playing thru some kind of plugin suite but im not sure which one.
Nice. I had an RG550 that I bought brand new in 1989 in Desert Sun Yellow which came with an Ibanez hardshell case. Ended up getting rid of it in 1993, 80's hair metal was over and grunge was in and bought an Ibanez EX in red which I still have. I should have never let the RG500 go. Oh well.🤔
Legendary guitars! In 1987, when released side-by-side with the Jem, these were basically Jems with cheaper pickups (same builders, same basswood body, same Edge tremolo, same hardware, switch, knobs, everything)...AND thinner necks ! I have one in every color offered in 1987...well actually 2 in desert yellow (^__^)!
Once again, Thanks ! 🎸☘️🤘
No doubt one of the best values in electric guitars today!
Beautiful. I love the Japanese RG's. I have 3 models from the classic era. I tried out a Genesis the other day and the neck, which I believe is the Super Wizard, it does feel slightly thicker, not by much. Wonder if it's because of the volute as opposed to the scarf joint. Regardless, these are awesome guitars and the price makes them even that much better. I will get one if they re-release the white one.
Imagine these have been $999 since their reissue 7 years ago while companies like Epiphone/Gibson and Fender have skyrocketed in price
A really solid offering from Ibanez.
So nice, so cheap, the race to the bottom continues. The squeeze is huge in the guitar world
What's up dudes... Just like the old days 😂🤘🏻
its nice to see one of the big guitar makers came back down to earth on pricing, good grief the pricing on these big box guitars anymore are ridiculous, c'mon a Japanese RG550 for under a grand? WITH a 5pc neck and floyd at that! only mod a guy might have to do are pups and maybe pots if need be, not sure what they use audio taper or linear but that s a nice guitar, wish they had a rosewood model, even willing to pay a hunnerd or so more for rosewood .. but yea these really stick a fork in the eyes of the other big box guys... I might need one of each color . .
what are the pups? alnico 3? 41awg?
Great video! I have a vintage RG 270 DX made in Korea and I really like it and the only thing I've thought about changing is the bridge pickup. I got it used great condition for a steal. I just wanted a Ibanez to play some even though I favor the Kramer and Jacksons more.
How does the neck on the RG compare to the Jackson DKA Pro Plus neck? I absolutely love the Jackson neck.
Brother, I love how you set your reverb and delay effects, can you share that setting with me?
Beautiful guitar, I have a blue RG450.
I waited to long I couldn't make up my mind the black or the new blue.. and now the black is out of stock till like April.. I have the 570 in Jewel blue but I always wanted the black and that Electric Blue.. They're calling these necks on the Genesis models "Super Wizard". i do have an rg w/ a wizard 3, and the 570 feels thinner. My 570 which I believe is a 2018 did not come with a case but came in a Prestige box.
Hang in there!
I was fortunate enough to snag a black one off Zzounds when they popped up.
Although I love the blue, I already own the limited white RG from 2018. So, I had to get black to match the white one.
I’m looking to score a Vampire Kiss RG565 next! (Yes, I have issues)
I thought I look for a Ibanez RG 550 on the web but as soon as I looked up you are unboxing one
I love wizard necks. I can't shred, but they feel so stable to me.
We do love our behaved lead.. and dual heavy rig? Of course . When i saw the cover come off this RG.. i said..get the earbuds, and crank em . Cuz here comes some steve toneage! Now i gotta get another 550 after trading my 450 off a few years back.. nice!👍
I have 3 of the Genesis RG550 and a RG655 Prestige. Almost identical guitars other than the pups. Admittedly the Tone Zone and air Norton in the prestige are a little hotter and sound better. The original edge trem is bullet proof and holds tune amazingly. Now I need the black one!
Hey @SFBGuitar -- I know it wouldn't be of interest to everyone who follows your channel, but have you ever done a video on Boston-area luthiers, shops, instructors, etc.? I'd love to know who you recommend.
I still have my 1990 RG550, still plays and sounds great. I bought a 2020, I think, RG550 Genesis re-issue, just as happy with that...doesnt have the comfortable used feel of my old one....soon though.
Hey Steve, it's time to try one of those headless Ibanez, Q52 or QX52.
Used to own one, bought in a pawn shop in 1996. Pickups were dull and the paint chipped away very easily. Got rid of it. It was supposed to be a backup for my RG565, but it couldn' keep up.
I ordered the purple neon. It took months to get. Finally got it. And a week later. They drop the black and blue. Grrrrrr. Mines chunky 9.9lbs
I have 3 vintage RGs and 2 vintage Kramers….yeah the necks on the RGs are ridiculously thin flat and fast and the guitar is very lightweight. The Kramers have a lot more meat to them the necks are thicker but comfortable and a much heavier guitar.
I love the 550's, they just don't make financial sense in todays market when the 450/70 is half the price and now uses the rock solid Zero II bridge instead of the garbage Edge III and Standard DL tremolo theyve used previously and these do NOT get the prestige fingerboard treatment which is why they do not get prestige on the headstock, they don't get the rounded frets or the rolled fingerboard so while they're made in the same factory, they skip multiple parts of the process to keep the cost down.
The only real reason to get the 550 over the 450 is if you really need your headstock to say made in Japan since most people prefer the Quantum pickups in the 450 over the V series pickups in the 550 and the savings in the 450 leaves a lot of headroom for tuner and pickup upgrades
whats up steve...salutes from chihuahua, mexico
Would you consider doing a demo of the GTRS W800 or W900 by Moore Audio. I would love to hear your thoughts on that guitar!
Got mine in Roadflare red it's perfect Japanese quality for $999 it's a no brainer 🤘
I got one like that in 88. It was red and had a rosewood neck and the original Floyd Rose. I’ve looked online and I can’t find anything even close to it.
Steve, would you know if they have a similar model like this with a Rosewood fretboard ?
The only RG550's with rosewood fingerboards were sold in the first 3 years of production, 1987-89. I have two vintage RG570's (basically a RG550 with no pickguard) with rosewood fingerboards for sale if your interested.
Nice guitar! Is there a small chip on the bottom horn near the pick guard? Not a big deal to me but you might have issues. Love these videos!
There's actually two chips, one on the back as well. I try to avoid borrowing new guitars whenever possible, so this one was from the scratch and dent listings. It takes the pressure off of keeping it perfect while on loan.
@@SFBGuitarhow does one borrow guitars? Always wished for a way to do that.
I've got a 2001 Japanese market only RG770FM, and it's one of the best guitars I've ever owned. I much prefer the RG without a pickguard, so when I was offered this in a straight swap for my MiM Strat, I had to have it. This 550 is nice, but the only slug in the custard is that maple fingerboard. I just can't get along with them.
Steve ,ever play one of the FU tone guitars?
Thinnest Ibanez neck I've ever seen was that super wizard thing they put on the RG520.
I'm still playing my 1987 Ibanez Radius 540r. It's still rock solid, and I don't think I'll part with it. I have had it since 97
There ya go!
My first "real guitar" was silver RG 550. Awsome guitar
Steve would like to see a picture of your old white 550 to see how the color looks if possible
That is one fine guitar! I had the original RG550 black edition and swapped it for a regular strat.....biggest mistake in my life hahahahahahha!
Just bought myself an electric blue RG550 Genesis. Amazing. Plays no worse than my J Custom
Simply the best guitar you can buy in this price range. I have the rg565, and I am not worthy whatsoever.
Hey steve can you compare that to a jemjr?
It's way better...no contest.
I want one.
Amazing GOTW!
Better then a vola? I'll be honest, When I got my vola I chose it because it didn't have a Floyd. 😮
🤘
I just can't stomach the super pointy horns, they look cartoonish. The Ibanez S shape on the other hand is perfection.
Bummer because they seem like a blast to play. MIJ for 999, thumbs up.
Recently purchased the Ibanez RG6HSH J-Line, exclusive in Japan, its same specs as the new RG550 Genny Series except no trem, hard tail and rosewood finger board with Gotoh locking turners, same pickups….much better guitar.
What are the pickups?
@@BoltRM same as the RG550 Genesis current version.
i bought an RG550 in Purple Neon a little over a year ago, the stock pick ups sound amazing and the Edge tremelo is phenomenally rock solid for staying in tune no matter how much i abuse it , best $999 i ever spent , i love that they offer it in Black and Electric Blue now as well
epiphone genesis
A nice looking guitar slick and black just a little too much for me right now
Okay let's start here, not everybody and I would say maybe a very small percentage of your audience runs their guitar through a computer, unfortunately on this end everything sounds the same, if you're going to buy a low-end guitar run it through a low end amp, I can make anything sound good through my Fender Twin Reverb, just a thought not a sermon.
Love your channel has Jeffy ever sent you a free kiesel guitar.
I gotta be honest, that guitar is gorgeous, BUT I cannot STAND black pole pieces on humbuckers; it cheapens a guitar's appearance somewhat. :/
Love your videos but man...do you know anything else to play besides rehashed VH licks? every video please play something different.
We all say the name wrong. It is not "Eye ban nez" it is actually a spanish word /name pronounced "E bon yez"
