There was also a $1 gold coin minted from 1849 to 1889 which contained .04837 troy ounces of gold. Also I meant to say 21.6 Karats for 90% gold 🔥🐉 Check out my video on gold eagles 👉🏽 ruclips.net/video/3BEVMbj0OBs/видео.html

Also a three dollar coin from 1854 to 1889, but they come at very high premiums even cleaned or damaged.

Dude i just found out yesterday my dad stacks gold and silver now wich i think is awesome. I was at a family get together yesterday and idk if he knew before hand i stacked gold and silver as well but anyhow he called me over and was like i gotta show you some coins i got and at first i thought he had said corn and so i was thinking what the heck is my dad doing buying corn?! Hahaha lmbo but then he pulled out some coins he had bought out of his gun safe then i was like oh okay this is pretty awesome. Then he ask me if I had been buying any gold or silver and i said yes and told him what all i have and he said okay just pace yourself with it and dont buy too much but anyhow i thought that was pretty awesome to say the least. Now i know me and my dad have something in common

Love that classic American Gold...great to stack in my opinion. I know they don't pull as much premium but you usually don't have to pay the high premiums either. When I order random dates and they send me a 1880, I am just so impressed with holding a 140 year old coin. Where has that thing been for 140 years??? Thanks SD...great video!!!

This is a really good video ... I appreciated the history content! One slight adjustment - you said that when people turned in their gold they would get fiat currency, well back then that was real currency not fiat. We didn't go off the gold standard until years later.

@@SilverDragons47 that's fine but silver currency you were paid in for your gold was still real money in the 1930s. It wasn't fiat money at that stage in history is my point.

Pre 1933 gold coins had some great designs like the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle! But did you know that when the first 1883 V nickels came out, they didn't have the word cents on the back! So people were gold plating them and passing them off as 5 dollar gold pieces! No one realize at that time that they were nickels because all they had on the reverse was V, the Roman numeral for 5!

In my experience the modern commemorative half eagles (1984-current) can typically be had for less premium than the pre-1933 versions.
Also, there are Mexican equivalents that can be had for typically a little less premium:
    2 pesos = $1 gold coin
    5 pesos = $2.50 quarter eagle
    10 pesos = $5 half eagle
    20 pesos = $10 eagle
50 pesos = 1.205 ounces of gold, also called a "centenario" (no equivalent of double eagle, that I know of)
The 2 and 5 pesos are typically much cheaper than their US equivalents.

I think one of the most important points that was missed in this video, stems off of the fact that the executive order also stated "gold coins having recognized special value to collectors of rare and unusual coins", which protected recognized gold coin collections from legal seizure and likely melting. This fact in itself is probably the most important factor when thinking about stacking in this economic climate and hedging against a potential future confiscation. Federal law clearly states even today, that any gold bullion can be confiscated in the event of national crisis.

  • @murp61
    @murp61 4 года назад

Another fun fact (if you don't mind me posting these) is that the gold collected by the Federal Reserve was melted down and turned into ingots for deposit into Fort Knox which I think was specially built for this purpose. Some interesting RUclips videos on the subject you can look up.

the fact that gold price was jacked up to $35 was unfair, but one could invest the $20.67 of confiscated gold into dow jones index fund and be richer than holding gold today, over $4000. the problem is that index funds didn't exist then, but one could pull it off with some smart stock picks. not defending roosevelt or shilling stocks. this is just what i would do if they confiscated gold from me

First the pre 33 US gold is a good stacking coin when you keep a couple of things in mind. First, only buy coins that are NOT cleaned and are in AU or BU condition. Next, do not buy coins with numismatic premiums or special rare varieties. The regular coins in the AU and BU condition are beautiful and fun to fondle and fawn over. Also, the coins in my mentioned categories will be much easier for you to sell at a good price. As far as numismatics ? Unless you are a top expert, you will simply get sucker punched on prices coming AND going.

You did leave out some very important details on the 1933 and below. Because a few gold coins were minted in 1933. But on to the lonely small gold coins. First but not least, the $1 gold which came in 3 different types. The first and third dollars were fairly non-descriptive , but the second one is a collectors dream. This one is fairly rare and carries a hefty premium whereas the first and third can be had for around spot plus a small premium. The second will cost you a hefty premium over spot. The other coin was the $3 coin. Now this was definitely cost you a very large premium, often 2x spot. The reason is its rarity. They were a limited number minted, thus the high price. Then there are the Stellars. These are what we call a pattern coin and worth many times over spot.

Got a bit tired of all the Sovereigns so I got my first pre 1933 American Eagle, also a Liberty Head, recently. I really like it and in case the economic situation allows me to contiue to stack, I will certainly get more of them. Really beautiful, my new favourite coin. I'm wondering though, what's the main size that people in the US stack? Quarter, Half, Full or Double? If you take the Sovereign, it's the full one, not the half, not the double, that most people stack.

Could you speak to the issue of selling pre 33 gold to a LCS or online dealer. How does that compare to selling modern gold coins?

Westender Days usually you get a bit less for it but you can sell private party as well 🔥🐉

The st guadens and the indian are my favorite.😊i have found pre 33,s premiums are way more stable.granted if you get a nice one you may get stabbed on numistatic value but off dates and higher circ #,s there are deals.history is big ,like morgans.

Pre 1933 gold has a great combination of numismatic and gold value. I don't know why anyone wouldn't buy it if given the opportunity.

$10 gold liberty eagle and Indian head over 1/2 oz American Gold Eagles all day, any day. I like the history behind them and love the design much more. The AGE is alright but very bland to me. Thanks for the video 👍🏼

I've been hesitant to stack pre-33 since the premiums seem higher than bullion (AGE, GML, etc.)

I think if you look around, you can find it for less than the bullion you mentioned (maybe not now but when things return to normal). If you use eBay bucks, you can get them well below spot. It also represents some great history! Give it a try DS!

Hasn't always been that way. Before the shutdown, I went to coin shows and bought pre 33 gold at or below spot. Can't do that now, no coin shows and ebay prices are too high. But it was not that long ago that you could buy a very nice slabbed St. Gaudens 20 dollar gold piece MS65 at $1,800. Can't do that now!

The U.S. equivalent of the gold sovereigns. You can put a collection togeather with less worry of counterfits.

Pre-'33 gold is also known as Legacy Gold. I don't have any myself but my dad has a pre-'33 Eagle and Double eagle he had mounted on a gold pendent back in the eighties and I might be inheriting them when he passes. Don't forget silver was also banned in 1934 but of course silver coins were still allowed to circulate.
