WHEN Will We Fill in the Ditch? ASK

- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- This is a frequently asked question that has a simple answer and a slightly more complicated one. Why haven't we filled in the drainage ditch around our Portuguese farm house yet? What's the plan for landscaping this area and when will it start looking less like a builders yard? Good question: let us explain.

Love the idea for merch "Not this year" 😂❤
More realistic, "Maybe Next Year". 😂
I think "Not this year" is more universal. I would wear that t-shirt. 😀@@ninemoonplanet
De que pais voce e?
I love watching every episode and especially when you answer questions. You both have my continuous admiration.
Love the idea of a multi terrace retaining wall as it then becomes an ideal place for flowers and herbs right next to the house.
Exactly 😃
Exactly, plus there will be a (castle sized) door to carry the herbs.
A good sized trug too.
Have people really being asking you when you would fill the ditch in ?! Have they not been watching your videos ? You never stop, work harder than anyone else and apparently that is not enough to please some.
You have my admiration. I, for one, won't be asking you when or what you will be doing. I am just happy to come for the ride, and to watch you do whatever takes your fancy 😁
It’s one of the more sane questions we get asked 😂
I don’t think a lot of people really understand how much work is in the work we do. Unless you’ve done a renovation yourself it’s be pretty difficult to comprehend.
And of course there’s always those who think the videos are solely for their entertainment….. 😂
Thanks, Kylie and Guy, for keeping us in the loop😊😊
Can’t have enough of your energy and positive vibes. Looking forward to more episodes. Thanks!
You guys work so well together! You each have your own strengths but you both are so dedicated to your cause! You are not scared of hard work! That is for sure!!!
You play well against each other and I love to hear your banter. Also your chuckles when you find something amusing!
What do you guys like to do on your down time? Do you explore the countryside?
Thanks for sharing! ❤️🙏🏼😎👋🏻🇨🇦
"Are you enjoying the old ground level? You are not even our cat!" Cracked me up, it did! 😆
Some of us see a short-term "fix", but you have the long-term plan, and that will take lots of excavating - and time. And right now, you want to spend that time to make your house cozy for next winter.
Sometimes I wish I was able to share all the visuals that are in my head as to what everything will look like in the end …. but it’s definitely a long game, and one we’re more than willing to wait for 😃
Always entertaining. It's wonderful to see you restoring and remodeling this old farm house. I like your sense of humor. It's going to be an amazing place when you are done with it. I hope you can move in by winter.
I can't wait for the big reveal 😊 but also appreciate you have so many other things to accomplish before getting to do landscaping. Each project finished is another one off the HUGE list 😂
Love the idea of a T-Shirt saying "Not This Year" ... I'd buy one!😎👍
What energy, and with that hot weather! 👏👏👏
I love the scattered stones embedded in the walkway and hope it can be incorporated in the new surface, when that happens. In due course, of course.
Not only that is not your cat but it's a different Not Our Cat from a couple years back, if I'm not mistaken? I guess what we the viewers were wondering about your lovely moat is - why didn't you level it with the rest, temporarily, so you wouldn't have a ditch around the house, and then you'd level it again later on? But we've had renovations at home and I think I can guess: we tend to underestimate the time we'll need to finish the works and then lots of other things keep popping up... GOOD LUCK you two! You've made amazing progress - and I guess you are even sleeping indoors now, right?
Holy cow--that is a mountain of work!!!
I can picture the finished product. It will be lovely.
You two are so ambitious. You have so much work still ahead of you. Good luck with everything.
I love watching your progress. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
Omg I can’t believe you will ever be finished. SO SO much more work.
Arm chair pontificaters are a giggle.Amazingvwork as usual.🎉😄🏠
They’re great aren’t they … ‘ you should’, ‘you need to’ etc should be banned in YT comments.
Though my favourite today … “when are you going to make an interesting video, I’m bored of this”
that makes sense, my two cents: if this digging is not happening anytime soon, fill in that small area where the pallet is, even pour some thin concrete, you will remove a hazard and make a life easier with a small temporary change. (assuming you walk there a lot). great work!
*Kylie & Guy, you two are amazing and such hardworking folks.... what you have planned for this area will be a massive job... but so pleased that you not going to be digging it out by hand...*
I look forward to that one day when everything is finalized but in the meantime I will enjoy your journey... thanks for sharing 👍💯
so much work ahead of you and you are ready to tackle it step by step-respect for your perseverance.
The sound was very clear….❤️🇨🇦
Lovely plans and practical because I assume a lot of your house drainage issues came from those different elevations. I hope you do finish it before you lose energy so you can just sip your cordials and enjoy the fruits of your labors! I took on a similar old house project in america (frame house and garage and gardens and landscaping and solarium....... I'm a 69 yr old female and just hope I can enjoy the finished product before I die, lol.
Wow that’s a lot to think about. Overwhelming! 😵💫
love being along for the ride:)
Thanks for bringing us along for the ride and you might not be, but I’m happy we are in for another couple of years of projects 😊❤
Those huge massive granite block/bricks I think would look amazing
I really enjoy your process. In a perfect world you would only touch each space once and then move on but when part a, depends on part b,c,d and e you have to do a little, or a lot, move on and then come back as needed. The attitude that it isn’t all going to be done today works. Set those smaller goal to achieve to make progress and enjoy life. Look at it this way, if everything was done we wouldn’t have as many reasons to keep coming back. I love that the cat comes to visit. Thank you so much for sharing.
I love what you're doing with the place. I think a good home always gives you something to do. 😊 At least that's the type of home I grew up in. ❤
On the upside, at least we know we have 5 more years of your videos!
At least 😂
Great idea about opening up the area around the house with terraces, I imagine it's a project for after the house is livable and one for the cooler months of the year. Keep on keeping on guys.
I adore watching the journey & didn’t get two hoots about that pathway. Everything seems so complicated but there is no better team in the world then you two to work through it. I love all these future projects so I can keep watching. I really hope you two are prepared to keep filming for as long as it takes to make it perfect for us al…lol
I thought you explained about the "ditch" and all the levels.. was it last year or maybe the year before. The only thing that I wish for you both is a mini digger. I think you have both done enough spade work to last a lifetime. It was a shock to see just how much fill you would have to remove to get level with the old pigsties, that's a good 2 1/2 foot of spoil that has to be dumped somewhere. Oh my I am sweating just thinking about it, you have to do it. Maybe it will be a winter project, just so that you can keep warm !!! Thanks for posting... Good luck
Wow!! You are doing a great job!!! Everything is spectacular ❤❤
I like when at the END of your videos you can hear KYLIE in the background, bye bye , muffled like she is being held against her will.. 😂😂😂
I love the documenting and it is im sure very overwhelming somedays but i think when url are living downstairs with plumbing and heat it will all be so much more bearable and the rest can follow as time allows. ❤
You have a cunning plan, and a lot off work to do. Good stuff.
Of course you'll do it - when the time is right. The project, the process, is your life for the foreseeable future. You are patient, and so should we be, however much we are spoilt with instant gratification.
You are such intelligent and capable and sensible people. Any fighting you do is not on camera. I just admire you as a couple. ❤
As we like to say, it’s the journey we’re enjoying, not just the destination 😀
Quick note on your fighting comment - we don’t fight on, or off, camera. Frustration, or losing patience, yes, but neither of us are the arguing/fighting type
Wow,that seems like a monumental amount of work.
Well, the good news for me is „I can enjoy a weekly M.D.G. video for the next fifty years“. Thx.
Just loving this blog……. You were missed! You are in trouble Dan, Stephanies amazing 50th birthday 🎉 😂🎉
Excelente vidio eu tenho a certeza que um dia isso aí vai ficar lindo. Boa semana e muito obrigado 👍👍👍
Thanks for answering some of our questions. Looks like you have content for years to come
Always interesting. ❤
Good to have plans,
Great plans 👍
Everything takes time and better to not rush it.
Great video, thank you.
Excellent 👀
You did a great job, I love your video. Everything here is great. I subscribe to the channel❤
I know you were thinking of digging a pool eventually but with all that rubble and soil you are building up and will continue to build up with th works ahead of you i would recommend an above ground pool l and burying with all that excess rubble and soil you're going to have and landscaping it in to a hump less digging and good way to dispose of the wasit
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Inspection chambers!! Thank you, Kylie! I've been struggling for days to find an English translation for the "regards" we are installing along the fibre internet line leading to our house here in France. Surprisingly hard to find a translation that fits... Now I know what to say to English speaking family & friends - whew. 👍🙏
Welcome!
Another word would be ‘manhole’ … though they have a second meaning (ie. a hole that a man/woman can go into … to access subways/waterlines etc)
@@MAKEDOGROW Yeah, I saw that as a possible translation, but to me that is the round thing in the middle of the road that people climb down to work on the sewers... Inspection chamber describes exactly what the things in our driveway are 😀 Can't believe I spent several weeks not finding that phrase 😂
You could have a swimming pool on the otherside of that retaining wall so that you don't have to level out too much. And create stepts or slopes to the rest of the out building.
That’s amazing, I didn’t realize there was that much height difference, now I can see why!
I have a perfect picture in my mind of a staircase that is from where kitty was to the end of the walkway. As in on the wall, essentially up the wall. I'm sure y'all have ideas, but wanted to share. I can't wait to see it all come together!
Okay, we understand what the plan is and why it will be a future endeavor, but you did not mention WHY? Removing that much of the existing grade away from the house foundation does not seem like a good idea. Not to mention this will cause rebuilding of the retaining wall. There must be a reason, but I’m not seeing it 🤔
I wondered that myself. I appreciate the need to lower the ground level around the house to tackle rising damp, but would have thought you wouldn't want to shift too much material, could cause all sorts of issues. A flight of steps up to the outbuildings might suffice?
There’s a whole video explaining the why …. actually two, one before the works and one after 😃
Yes. IIRC, it has something to do with moisture management at the base of the existing walls; but I don't remember the part where the entire building needed to become a moated tower. 🤣
@@MAKEDOGROW I think it was so long ago now I can't remember much about it 😆
@@evelyngorfram9306 Same here, I had it in my head it was eventually being backfilled...
It would be great to use the existing door when you lower the door, by just installing a header above the doors new position. There is alot of charm in that old door. Of course refurbish it and make it look new again.
Except it’s made of metal meaning it has zero insulation properties … no good when it’s very hot or cold.
It’ll get repurposed in some way, just not to the main house
I want one of those tee shirts! 😁
Obviously it’s going to be a moat full of crocodiles 🐊 😂 Nice drawbridge! Much better than walking the plank! 🏴☠️
I want the T Shirt… Not This Year…
Cheers from Oz🤣🤣😂😂😆😆😱
You guys should make t-shirts that say "Much more work to do" on one side and on the other, "Hopefully, next year." on the other. LOL :)
love your updates so good to watch
One day, next year 😊
Lots of work - good luck.
Casually here checking if we have the new video already❤
Awesome guys..
One day..... we will get to it. You forgot that one. 🤣🤣
At 4:00 & 6:00 approx Kylie points to & mentions “this” several times but we cannot see what “this” is & it’s hard to envisage what’s to be done & what it should look like when finished, as to camera is pointed at her.
Even when pointing the camera away from her we would still be able get the audio I imagine.
I wonder did you ask yourselves is this more work to do it this way or is it more work to sand blast then clean everything we own, blasting with walnut shells or a softer medium than sand. But as I’m 3 to 4 moths behind and in the middle of binge watching the playlist in order. You’ve probably already sorted it. But I guess I’ll find out soon.
Brilliant
Another Tee should be “some time later” 😊
We have a ‘some time has passed’ one 😁
@@MAKEDOGROW ooh yeah that’s what I meant!

I appreciate you want to make a new door, but maybe just removing that threshold, setting the existing doors at the intended level and fitting a temporary board in the gap left above would make your movements in and out of the building more comfortable?
‘JUST removing the threshold …’ 😂 …. if only things were that easy
@@MAKEDOGROW Not when you two are involved 😘
I tell you what though, I've got a similar job to do though on a smaller scale that I've been putting off, I've resolved to tackle it tomorrow!
@@LaReynedEpee do it once, do it right (pretty much our motto about everything)
@@MAKEDOGROW I'm thinking of your poor wee knees, you know
How does your intended finished ground level compare to the level of the road on the far side of the building? I hope you're not planning to terrace & rebuild the public street as well. 🤣
😂. The new ground level will be the same as the road … one of the many reasons we want to drop down.
yes, i want the t-shirt🤣.
Maybe 2 t-shirts? 1 there is a lot to do and 2 not this year 😉
1. What are you going to do with all the dirt?
2. Will you be building a retention system for the water run off?
Oh dear!
I get the wanting to keep the ground level lower after doing the drainage but are you not concerned about water levels during rainy season. I mean on the entire property? Was there a reason the ground level was at that height initially? I know you guys know what you are doing? So impressed with your expertise and hard work. Cheers Gina in Upstate New York USA moving to Portugal
❤️🕊❤️
I assumed the ditch was you castle molt to be filled with water and crocodiles..(joking of course)
never give up on your visions and dreams!
I don't understand, why have a new ground level so much lower, instead of make it higher and keep everything same level? Did I miss the explanation in the video or was this not mentioned at all?
You need to go back about a year in time to understand: ruclips.net/video/KurWIhr7ZrU/видео.htmlsi=6Nm1dvUDO2HABenZ
Yeh nah Kylie & Guy!! hahaha How's about this... It will get done by Christmas....which Christmas??....dunno yet
This not our cat breed is very common in your area, right? 😂 And so charming of you gyus to inform us you're never filling the ditch. ❤😂
New cat walking by?
hi guys if you need some help with the hard landscape project (stairs, patios and all the garden area) I am up for it. lets talk about it. Cheers from Brazil
So, you didn't explain why you are dropping down the levels rather than using the existing levels. Why did you dig down and install the French drain so far below the existing level? Why does everything have to be dug-up and dropped down?
I just think Oh,Oh,Oh my back hurts....( Yours,not mine😂😂😂).
Drop the doors on entrance and put a transom above
The elephant seems to be winning at the moment.
"Of course we'll be getting a digger in."
From years of watching this channel, I can say that that revelation was by no means the certainty that "of course" implies it to be.
'A Digger' is British Army slang for an Australian ...... just saying!
Not for now, tied up in future digging.
Is that the outside shower behind you?
👏🌟👍🍀💐
Maybe the year after. Hope you have a lot of cash
But why are you lowering the outside? Seams crazy to me but I’m sure it make sense to you. 🥴
Ok
