I'm a modern style guitar nerd who just clicked on one of Noam's reverb videos when I was bored. I was not prepared to discover music like this. This song is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard and the skill and technique needed to play this is so humbling, I didn't know it was possible to play a stringed instrument like this.
i remember the day i first listened this song and it moved so much, that i often remember it with such affection, it is one of the most emotional piece of music i have ever listened to.
I have a brilliant student who showed me this tune and I have it cracked in theory. We figured out the roll and now the chords are straight forward. Not they we can play it yet, not even close but it is fun to deconstruct and at least try. Noam is so amazing, I've been hearing about him long before he was famous. Colby Maddox would talk about him all the time. The first time I saw him live my jaw was dropped.
How is he doing that double note ripple? Is it a downstroke of the thumb with an upstroke of the index finger? Might need to make a recording and slow it right down, haha. Such wonderful playing. Will definitely be picking up the banjo this eve.
Unlike everyone destroying their instruments, I'm going to use this glowing piece of musicality to rekindle the fires of inspiration, and suck in the bitter smoke of inevitable failure on my way down a dark road. Who knows if it leads to "success", but at least it's forward, and ultimately it will be worth the effort. If not only for self discovery and the unveiling of my limitations, then to work within my limitations to find something magical. Join me! Pick up that untamed wooden creature, and march once more into the Breech! ...that is, if your hands don't hurt too much from trying that one chord voicing...
Does anyone who enjoys playing basketball or football or any other sport ever give it up when they see a top professional make an amazing play? Do young, fit people give up running or skiing after watching the Olympics? Or should the old and creaky hang up their shoes, rackets, or skates? I don’t know why amateur musicians continue to post Comments about giving up or destroying their instruments. Amateurs of all kinds can appreciate what the professionals do even more than those who have never tried it. E. Ed - you have exactly the right attitude!
@@brucekuehn4031 YES! You're awesome, and that makes me very happy. Sometimes things like this just need saying, so thank you for spreading that positive, constructive attitude ~
Beautiful, stunning proof of the banjo's versatility. Absolutely brilliant. This song reminds me a bit of Anthony Phillips' solo guitar work, especially the "Private Parts & Pieces" LP.
I can't play this tune and it pisses me off. There is one chord that I can't voice. I thought I could be the best banjo player in the World until I heard Noam, and others as I have progressed and realize my 6 hours a day practice, is not enough, now my hands are giving out, my elbows shot, and in not even close to my goals. Shit, do I continue? Give up? The only thing I can do is keep teaching and and performing with no expectations of recognition, getting treated like shit from the clubs, and making other people money with my work and talent. It's a fucked up reality.
So much speed and strength in reserve, he's always able to shape the repeated note top line as it moves. It would be so easy for a less mature artist to toss this off all glib and with no shape. Worse, one of those old guys who lived on his reputation and psyching youngsters out and murdering Bach at half speed because he has so little respect for his public that he can't be bothered to prepare properly cause if they buy him they have cloth ears and why bother.

Have you heard Francisco Tarrega's composition "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" ruclips.net/video/gIRI0vN99Y4/видео.html&ab_channel=dBProductionsSweden
I will now burn my collection of banjos on a pyre of love and respect of course.
Simply amazing and beauty caught in a moment

can't believe this video is 7 years old.
I use the same thumb picks as Noam so.... we're basically at the same level
Brian Ivy what thumb picks do you both use out of interest?
I use golden gate pearloid thumb picks I think that is what he uses too.
They say it's all in the picks!
I've never heard a banjo played like that before. Beautiful!
Sublime.
You took the word right out of my mouth.
He's an absolute genius
Oh man. I'm crying 😭😭. This is so moving.
What tremendous skill and talent!
Close your eyes and you think you're hearing two banjos=truly amazing!
Wow that was really beautiful.

Greatness in others should inspire us to try harder. That’s what the whole world could use and not just in music!
well that was just utterly beautiful. The double picked notes with thumb and finger create this harp like feel that's so floaty and ethereal. Love it!
I just heard this on Spotify. Amazing dude. Beautiful work.
Me too. On the 'Discover Weekly' playlist?
@@emcavale Yeah!
I absolutely love this song, great job Naom, wish I was as good as you buddy.
I think this is the best song on banjo I've ever heard, it's absolutely amazing.
Been listening to your new album for the last day driving around Tasmania, beautiful!
It's like Phillip Glass on a banjo. Amazing stuff.
I get your comment but triplets weren't invented by Philip Glass.
Superb

Maestro
That was a WOW! moment.
The entirety of Noam's discography/musical resume as a whole is certainly noteworthy!..
That was so incredibly beautiful ❤️
Like the banjo version of Un Sospiro by Liszt with Recuerdos del Alhambra. Amazingly beautiful!
Beautiful!
Gorgeous
beautiful. thank you, Noam.
16/05/2021: what a lovely day it's about to be. Hope she's enjoying it too. Got a 502 on the mcat yesterday
Bravo!
I'd like to see a Noam + Mandolin Orange collaboration....
Very cool effect. All I can say is Wow!
Beautiful. can't wait to see this in person at McCabe's tomorrow!
This is the first instrumental in my roty in years
Great show at the Kent Stage!
Phenomenal.
Iconic
Really great, looking forward to your concert tonight at the MIM!
It's like Revel's "Jeux D'eau" on banjo
Such a breathtaking piece! Tell me how big is your left hand!! I need some extensions for my left hand fingers...😂
I just don't get how this tune has so few views and likes 😪
Omg 🥹♥️
It's like classical guitar.
Where's the other guy playing the bass line??
one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed and the fool goes and puts the tablature up on Banjo Newsletter
He definitely met someone at the Crossroads
Can you give us that tab for this? LOL Beautiful!
You can find it in the July 2017 edition of Banjo Newsletter
As Banjo Ninja said, it's here: banjonews.com/2017-07/noam_pikelny_interview_by_tony_trischka.html
Sure is purty.
I wish the camera would hover over that right hand steadily for a minute...lol
Anyone know the roll pattern??
Great, now I'm completely discouraged about my crappy banjo playing. I'm almost not really kidding. In an ironic way.
He’s a virtuoso, it’s not a competition. You can still be good doing simpler stuff! :)
Going from the RUclips ad for "Country Heat" workouts to this song was an exercise in cognitive dissonance.
Flamenco and bluegrass delegates are about to fight in the street to draft him...
The prog/mathrock delegation would like a word

No not depressed, he's shocks me more than anything.
Are you okay, mate?
Is this the guy that thinks he's Bela Lugosi?
So.. a guzheng, huh?
i guess npr CAN be good for something. Who knew.

I think he was just lip-syncing this or using a stunt musician because nobody could do this in real life.
Soap he is the stunt musician
