Sadhana - What, Why and How- Satsang by Swami Advayananda Ji

In his special satsang, addressing the Campers from Mumbai , Swami Advayananda explained the concept of “Sadhana” for a Sadhaka. Realization being the foremost priority, he quoted from Kenopanishad as to how a great loss will be incurred if we did not use this human life for realization (Truth). He went on to explain how realization or Mukthi is not something gained by actions in time and space, for it is already there. We do not know it now hence Knowledge is required. The Blockage for knowledge needs to be removed which are in the form of Mala, Vikshepa and avarana. Mala caused by ashuba vasana cannot be perceived but is seen by its manifestation as desire or Vishyasakthi. The rest of the effects such as Krodha, lobha, madha, Moha and mathsarya are manifestations of desire. To remove this mala our Kama have to be overcome by opposite Nishkama karma and hence karma Yoga. Chitta Chanchalan is known as Vikshepa. A weak mind is responsible for this lack of concentration so, Bhakthi Yoga. Japa is prescribed to conquer both mala and Vikshepa. When Bhagavan is brought inside us filling our mind Mala is evicted. Thus nama japa reinforces concentration. These Bahiranga Sadhana elements must be supported by Shravana, manana and Nidhidhyasana, the Antharanga sadhana elements. I do not Know brahman is eliminated by Shravana - Shravana is Tatparya Grahanam grasping the essence of Teaching. Shravana - active listening. The Asambhavana i.e that I do not understand is removed by Manana, which is Sruthi anusarana Yukthi or Logic supported by sruthi. That Brahman is not experienced is removed by Anubhuthi for this Nidhidhyasanam is required. Here I am Brahman thought takes deep root in us. Swamiji narrated the experience of the Brahma Jnani Appaya Dhikthishar who confirmed that even in a mindless state the Aham Brahmasmi thought is retained. Sadhana is successful when all the elements together make Brahmaanubhuthi to take place and this is like Knife on butter.
