@@masmix123 standalone i think the Mists of Pandaria cinematic would be the best to watch for something more stylized, you could also look at Overatch cinematics - either "Dragons" for more action or "Rise and Shine" or "Bastion" for something a bit more subdued you could probably get a kick out of the snow effects in Rise and Shine
The World of Warcraft cinematics from start to finish, to not only chart the journey of the cinematic team, but also to see the epicness of the game characters and world design.
For bonus, there's a side quest chain in game which has you go to find out what happened to this expedition, aptly named By Three They Come, and as part of it you visit the same passageways, door and Gate as in the cinematic.
The first time I watched this, my eyes were stretched wide open the entire time Lilith's 'birth' scene played out. It's just so disturbing and captivating. I've never seen a more interesting take on a 'portal' or 'summoning.' It had just this intense, birthlike imagery that was just so gross and yet profound. And the final image of her giant flesh cape was just grotesquely majestic. I love the concept that you can present 'evil' in a way that feels gross and dark and yet somehow elegant and beautiful. I think the 'rose petals' are just supposed to be bits of flesh from the 'portal' and the purpose is for them to fall and appear as though they are roses. Breathtaking.
@@ChompStudio In the game there's the topic of "blood petals", so yes, obviously reminiscent of rose petals, but it's supposed to be blood petals, pieces of Lilith that can evoke memories in the player's characters and can force people to be obedient to Lilith if fed to them (if i remember correctly).
Well it goes with the pre-caanite philiosophy of 'as above, so below'. Everything is suppose to be a perversion of itself. Just like the depiction of 'beauty' in this cinematic. Grotesquely beautiful. If you get what i mean. Goetia.
The petals are a theme in the game for wherever she goes, they're "Blood Petals". Blizzard are truly masters of cinematics, every main IP they made have insane ones. I think you watched SC2: Legacy of the Void, you could also check out SC2: Heart of the Swarm which is my favorite, and SC2: Wings of Liberty.
They've even improved in realism in human faces since this trailer. The facial fidelity and acting on Anduins face for The War Within trailer I believe makes it past the uncanny valley, definitely worth a watch.
Lilith's face when she's standing there in the close up is _i n c r e d i b l e_ The choice to give her this sort of, wonderous indifference is so interesting and perfect. It's literally like she's a newborn, fresh into consciousness, taking in the environment with her eyes focusing around on things unseen behind us as she faces the camera. The bones beneath the translucent skin, the heart beating in her ribcage, all of it. Her pressing through the gristle and membrane to be 'born' is absolutely captivating. The blood petals in her descent, the incredibly tender joining of hands, the soft grace with which her foot first gently touches the ground. Incredible artistic design, cinematography, and overall visual execution!
What I really love about this trailer is that if you play the game you can play a quest line that gives you the whole prestory to this trailer. You follow in the clerics footsteps and unravel what happened to him. Extremly fascinating!
*Anthony Howell's voice is SO good. SO much gravitas. I know it's not a part of what you're analyzing as a motion designer, but that man has voiced so many characters I love. I like Elias(the guy who knew exactly what was going on) for that exact reason. Edit: Elias is played by Anthony Howell, not Steve Blum, my mistake! Steve Blum voices Mephisto in Diablo IV.
Sound is still such an important factor....probably the most important. His voice acting is just so perfect...it never once felt out of place! Love it!
The color shifts and tone shifts of this cinematic are amazing, but they nailed some really small things that show a really loving attention to detail. Capturing realistic facial movement is tough in animation but if you watch the character's eyebrows, you see the muscles moving in a way that is totally accurate to human emotion. When he cowers, his brow wrinkles in a way that perfectly communicates fear. Then when he looks up, his brows press together in a way that communicates anxiety. Then when Elias tells him he came seeking knowledge, you see the brow muscles conveying realization and then acceptance. Then you see the muscles in his face relax when he dies and finally, his face is locked in an expression of awe. They crossed the uncanny valley. If you didn't know you were watching an animation, you wouldn't be able to tell those weren't real facial muscle movements. They nailed it!
I have not seen any company that captures my attention through cinematics like blizzard. If only they made long movies, tickets would be sold out. The music is so intense when Lillith is summoned. I think I have watched this video and especially the battle with Inarius more than a hundred times and still I don't get tired.
@@ChompStudio Well there is the Warcraft movie that they released a few years ago. Too bad all the humans were live action. But the orcs and other fantasy aspects of the movie were som real cool CGI!
I remember the hype at Blizzcon when they showed this trailer. They showed it with very little context to what it was and the roar of the entire event center after the video was over was electric.
I love these more technical breakdowns of the cinematics - and I’m a long time Blizzard fan and player of their games - Blizzard games cinematics are 1000% 10/10 everytime. Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft - ALL have great cinematics that I look forward to if you choose to jump head first down this rabbit hole of game cinematics.
Please do the new WoW cinematic The War Within. I'd love to hear your take on the particle effects and textures. BTW, the whole cinematic is hand done. No mocap which I almost didn't believe.
Highly recommend all of the Overwatch(another Blizzard franchise) cinematics. The Last Bastion, Kiriko cinematic, Dragons and Honor and Glory are my favorites.
Blizzard Cinematics are the crown jewel of the company. They have knocked it out of the park time and time again over decades. Very few can truly hold a candle to there dominance. This particular cinematic, I think deserves every ounce of praise it gets for it's mastery of advanced 3D technology, it's storytelling, and unbelievable execution.
One detail I love that everyone seems to miss, to foreshadow that the "Captain" character if you will, is the bad guy is when they get to the door he says "Break the seal", indicating he already knew there was a magic seal on that door - as well as when the rogue character says "Are you out of your mind? He's not going to make it" the captain responds "He HAS to." because he knows he needs 3 sacrifices.
This incredible trailer led to the biggest launch for any video game in history. Simply had peeps on their edge of their seat for the hype. Really looking foward to the next trailer for the 2024 expansion, which will unveil the next baddie. (no spoilers here :o)) Love the analysis!
It's so dark, gross ,evil but beautiful at the same time when she comes. Blizzard cinematics have always been top tier. Especially being a diablo guy. The ones in Diablo 4 sometimes even got me emotional cuz they were so well done
For all the hate Blizzard gets ( and I get why as being a 19 year player on WoW ) there is one thing they excel at above other studios, and that's doing Cinematic trailers.
There's something about essentially "birthing" a mother into existence. Lilith was essentially born here, hence the flesh like tapestry that's akin to a womb or hymen. It's a very elegant, yet still grotesque way of introducing her.
@@ChompStudio I believe so! There are also really nice in-game cinematics and many people cut them together to make movies. You can have like 2-3h long movie made from star craft 2 :D Looking forward to the next one! yeah.. whatever your opinion is about blizzard... there is really nothing better out there when you talk about cinematics... they are just perfect..i would love to see a behind the scene on those.. but unlikely to happen anytime soon..
i'd love to see you react to the new 'World of Warcraft The War Within Announce Cinematic' from Blizzard, it's the most realistic cinematic i've ever seen from them
They were not rose petals, was the blood of the sacrifices after Lilith incarnation in flesh. They manage to make something gross into something "beautiful", Diablo creative team was impressive there.
My interpretation is that the moment the 3 victims sacrificed their blood to open that first door they essentially entered into a magical contract. Everything that happened to them after that moment had been consented to even if they absolutely didn't want it to happen.
Blizzard does cinematic so much better than any other game company. There is literally no one else as good at making us invest in cinematic and then shit the bed with gameplay 😂
Maybe you have it in the pipeline already. But you should react to World of Warcraft: The War Within Announce Cinematic (another Blizzard creation). It looks so realistic its borderline uncanny valley.
Blizzard's cinematic department has always been a masterclass in cinematics. Shame the rest of the company lets their cinematic team down all the time.
there was such hype and hope for the game after this was released... then the game ended up being a MASSIVE disappointment in both design and story. TO remove two major figures from the IP's origin in such... unsatisfying ways was a massive writing fail.
Love your content. I have some constructive criticism. You say in the opening you'll try not to talk too much during the video, which is a good thing. I have paused at 1:06. You've already said multiple things that added nothing while breaking immersion of the viewer. I really wish you'd lesson the talking while watching for the first time. It's up to you of course, but I find as the viewer it really dampens the atmosphere of the cinematic. It also doesn't help that your voice is so loud in comparison to the video you are watching. I'm looking forward to more reactions in the future!
