Very insightful for FM synthesis on older style synths! OB-6 user here :)
X-Mod is beautiful because it really opens up the level of versatility of these synths. A lot of people say because of the immediacy of the OB6 and P6, you lose versatility but this video just proves that both synths are VERY capable of having a wide pallet of sounds if you know what to look for. The immediacy of the synths are just an added beauty! (lets not even mention the fact you can use OSC 2 as a second LFO both keytracked and not! and even "FM" with the filter env)

Thanks! Yeah, the OB-6 is great, I made a couple of FM banks for it and I really found that you can get a huge range of sounds from it.

probably the best tutorial on sound design on the prophet 6 I've watches , many thanks

This is so helpful! Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. Especially love those PPG-like tones! Not sure why but it seems so much more satisfying to get them out of a Prophet.

Thanks! Yeah definitely had PPG-like tones on my mind here. Yeah it's definitely more satisfying to sculpt those sounds instead of just loading a wavetable.

I hear that! Anyway, thanks again! You’ve inspired me to become more familiar with Polymod on my old rev 3.3!

Nice! This is so helpful. Came here cus i’m doing some FM experiments with Prophet X, which is a different beast as it uses the mod matrix rather than polymod, but these same techniques are useful. Hadn’t really thought to use sync and FM together, makes me wonder what i can get up to on the X, which has digital oscillators, where you can control the amount of pitch instability. (And in fact since it has 2 sample-playback oscillators, you can do FM on a sample, which is one reason i bought the X.)

Cool! Yeah a lot of the general principles apply to any synth. The X is really cool! Definitely a ton of flexibility there.

Awesome. Thank you! ... Though I wish you'd filmed it on the proper orientation... Tiny phone screen here

As cool as this is, I'd love to see Sequential come out with a true FM synth. Say, 8 oscillators with various waveforms at varying frequencies (2 of them analog), able to create your own algorithms of any structure. Individual envelopes of each oscillator, out either digital or analog filters, including a ladder, plus poly-mod, drive and feedback capabilities.
This sounds like a lot, but it's already on a heck of a lot of synths made by Sequential. With this, one could create beautiful 1980s FM sounds of the DX, Synclavier, TX-81Z, Casio CZ-5000, but also have the warmth and grit of a Prophet if you wanted it.
