- Is there enough information on this find for us to find out exactly who owned it? My favourite kind of mudlarking find is one which I can link back to a person or a place. This find has a name on it!! And it also has some other info. The challenge is on to find out who it belonged to. Can you help?!
In April I was lucky enough to search a beautiful secret location near Holland with my mud buddies @Sifinds and @MudBagger406406406 . We had a wonderful time and found some beautiful treasures.
If you know anything about any of these finds, please let me know!
Thank you for watching.
Nicola White
The winged wheel is from the national railway co. of Belgium. That design was used from 1835 to 1870. The little lion was also from Belgium. The mystery wallet medal is a Beggars Badge originally created in 1566 by Protestant Dutch who wore it as a patriotic medal. King Phillip of Spain was on one side and two hands clasped inside the opening of a begger's bag on the other. The inscription was " In all fidelity to the King, even to carrying a beggar's sack"
Ah cool, a really old button from a Belgium entity; that makes it an extra special find!!
You are such a wealth of information! Thank you!
Thank you 👍
As Nicola mentions, many different entities have used, and indeed many still do use, the winged wheel and crown as their identity. The national Danish railways DSB is one, and some of their old designs resemble this one as well.
@@dorric123 Very true but the angle of the wings and details of the crown (also looking at the amount of french wordage on the beach they appear to be on the Belgiun coast) make them each a bit different.
I don't wish to sound corny, but your videos are like a ray of golden sunshine.
I wholeheartedly agree 🌞
I do too! I always look forward to seeing each new video.
I agree. I come looking for them for my happy time
🌞 I'm so glad they brighten your day ❤
Cornys good and so is twee cute and braw heehee.😊
That cobalt blue bottle looks like the bottles that held *_Evening in Paris Parfume_* that my mother wore around 1953. It had a delightful scent and when my mother and my dad were going out on a date, she would splash a bit around her neck and her earlobes. Now, being a logical little child, I assumed that anything that smelled that heavenly...that good, *_MUST_* also taste good. Like I said...logical
One day, when my mother was busy and otherwise occupied, I crawled into the bathroom. Putting my vast amount of knowledge that I had amassed over 18 months, I saw a way up that great pinnacle of the bathroom counter. *THERE* ahead, was the treasure that beckoned me on. My quest was now at hand!
My first swallow from that gorgeous blue bottle was a disappointment and burned my throat as I swallowed it. I just needed to drink a bit more...maybe?
After downing a complete bottle of "Evening in Paris", I guess the scent wafted through our little home to the nostrils of my mother. Panicked calls to my doctor with assurances that I may be quite drunk for a bit (about 190 proof parfume) there shouldn't be any long-term effects.
Short term effects...? Well, that's another matter, altogether. For about 7 days after my gastronomic expedition, my nappies had the smell of "Evening in Paris", along with semi-digested strained peas, and carrots and milk. I guess my mother had her reasons...but, she never replaced that bottle of parfume, and would become nauseous whenever she smelled it.
Logical? Yes. Smart? Not really...
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hi Nicola. I've actually sailed on the Uganda. Before the Falklands War she had been used for many years as an educational cruise ship. It gave a lot of school children the chance to see a little bit of the world by cruising aboard her. I went with my school, in 1981 I think, on a cruise around the mediterranean visiting the sites, I saw many Roman and Greek ruins and cities, visited the holy land and Jerusalem plus many more stop offs. I also think it was mid cruise when the Falklands War was declared and the kids who were aboard her at the time had to be flown home early. She was a lovely old ship
yep me too
That’s amazing!!
That is a fascinating story - you’ll never forget that trip for sure!
What a great story! Sounds like the Uganda certainly did a lot during it's lifetime! Thank you
So did I! I think my trip was in 1979 but could have been 1980. We visited Malmo, Copenhagen and Bruges.
I found the obituary of someone whose middle name is Ann. She was born on 24/9/40 in Norway. Maybe it’s a stretch, but we know that that bracelet is connected to someone who made a life here on Planet Earth, and not so long ago.
Clever you. I must admit it's an unusual spelling of that name. It's usually spelt Annie. You never know you may have hit the spot!
Hi Nicola! The interesting pendant is from the Liberaal Vlaams StudentenVerbond (Liberal Flemish Students Association), an organization for Dutch speaking students in Belgium. The Liberal Archive in Ghent has an identical one in their collections. The "IVSQVES A PORTER LA BESACE" design goes much further back in history to the Dutch Revolt during the Eighty Years' War where it appeared in identical form on Geuzen or Sea Beggars' medals in 16th century.
The winged wheel button resembles the logo of the the Danish state railway (DSB), but several other railways in Europe have also used very similar logos.
Thanks as always for your wonderful videos.
Thank you!
The opening sequence is so beautiful and poignant and you do the wildlife proud every time. So thank you for the artistry implicit in the edit. You are a gem.
Love the music from the opening sequence. Anyone know the source?
I think the oval blue bottle reminds me of the “evening in Paris” perfume my mom had in the 1950’s.
@@llb380I'll look it up and tell you today
Thank you I do love my wildlife
Hi Nicola. I have been following you for about 18 months. This particular post is particularly poignant for me. In 1982 I was serving with the Royal Navy in the south Atlantic. The ship I was on was hit and sunk on May 25th. I was wounded and spent some time on the SS Uganda as a patient before going to Montevideo and then home. I am still in touch with nurses and crew from then. Many thanks. Nick
Glad you’re still with us! Take care!
Wow! Thank you for sharing that story Nick. I'm glad you lived to tell the tale x
I seriously would be picking up every little coloured stone thinking i had found something precious. I love how you both can identify what something is with just a little bit of it
Hello Nicola! I enjoy watching your mudlarking adventures on Sunday mornings (in California). When you are filming and say “I‘ve just seen something, can you spot it?” almost without exception I see something else! I can imagine how overwhelming mudlarking must be. Thank you for taking us with you. Have a great week.
I do too….. I point at the screen and say yes but what about that, and that……and that. What’s that green thing in the hope Nicola is honing in on ESP 😅😅
I watch from Sacramento and I dream of having that much history and a spot like your to find it in
What a wonderful location for finds! If I had been there, I would have picked up all the broken tiles. Think of the wonderful mosaics I could have made! lol
You are like Snow White. My husband and I like to sit out in our front yard here in Dayton, Ohio USA and feed whole peanuts to the squirrels, chipmunks, and whoever else wants to visit us. Your kindness to these creatures is admirable. Oh, and your mudlarking is ALWAYS interesting to follow.
Ohio as well Lancaster lol
Awesome trip that was! Can't wait to return! 😊👍🏻👣🧡
This is what i found about the pendant. It's called a Beggers badge DATE 1566 ORIGIN Europe, Netherlands Some are made of Gold. A small group of curious medals, collectively known as "Beggars' Badges" are amongst history's truly notable emblems of the never-ending quest for religious and political liberty. Created between 1566 and 1580 by Protestant Dutch patriots, Beggar's Badges became widely worn patriotic symbols in their protracted war for freedom from Spain. Bearing a portrait of King Philip of Spain on the obverse and two hands clasped inside the opening of a beggar's bag on the reverse, this well executed badge also carries the inscription "In all fidelity to the King, even to carrying the beggar's sack."
Wow....it doesn't look that old.
Thank you ❤️
@@slydoll7877 I thought the same thing
@@nicolawhitemudlark anytime Nicola. It’s always so much fun to find the history
So did the King carry a beggars bag?
Can anyone ever have enough doo-dads in their life? Love your videos! So peaceful.
No, you cannot have enough! It will drive your children crazy when they have to inherit.
Your colored glass finds remind me of my mom who was always looking for colored glass bottles, jars or just pieces. She made a stained glass window with the glass for our bathroom when I was in Jr high school. I am now 74 and love watching you and Si Finds.
We found a bracelet very similar to the one you found. Ours is marked Sterling. The inscription says, "Lay off you she wolves, This man belongs to me" And the back side says, "Evelyn to Frenchey". We really like your videos.
Oh how hilarious!! Love that. ❤️
Dear Nicola White, it never ceases to impress me how you spot the smallest but important items, saying "can you see it". I can rarely or never see what your looking at ! Thank you your enjoyable and very interesting videos.
By all means so a French video. Would be fun
I often spot a different thing entirely
Very generous of mud bagger to share his spot with you two . So many great finds you were almost tripping over them. Really like the glimpses of nature around you. More please 😄
Oh and yes do a French short there are a lot of French speaking areas here in Canada and indeed around the world that you can bring into your fanbase. 🇨🇦😉
Hey Nicola ✨️
I always like the inclusion of wildlife in your videos, especially those that visit your home. Many years ago I had just finished the school run and upon getting home we duscovered a fox and her 6 cubs sun bathing on our back lawn. I had discovered freshly dug soil behind my shed and knew it wasn't a tunnel from the 'great escape'....we went into the garden and the cubs ran down the fox hole....the mum got up stretched and went to the hole, called to them and walked towards us (about 5 feet away), layed back down and the cubs followed.....I said to my very young children that they now trust us, so always remember that, but respect them and keep a safe distance if they come out. During their stay and until they left, they never messed in the garden. I still have the pics I took.
I now live in a rural village and I cannot get the wild birds to feed from my feeder 🤦, neighbours have same problem...pour the seed on the lawn and down they come.
Finds like the miniature heron are meant for you.
Stay Safe Always 🦋🌻🕊☯️☮️🧡🫶
Lovely story about the little foxy loxys. I wonder if mine has cubs somewhere. Thank you and have a super week xx
Thank you x
@nicolawhitemudlark Always a pleasure to leave a comment , sometimes, well most of the time, I write too much...done it again 😊 x
If you do a mudlark in French I hope you provide subtitles. You have a very well trained eye to see items among the muck. I tend to see the modern items.
The fox at your window was really cool! But the Ring neck Parakeet was crazy! Didn’t know England had Ringnecks! Maybe someone’s pet got loose and is thriving with all the bird feeder’s around? Yours and Simons finds on the secret beach are just amazing! So much history! Stay safe out there!! ❤️❤️
There are quite a few little flocks of Parakeets in South London and North Kent.
The lion may be part of the "" East India company "" monogram.
Awesome findings with lots of lovely information. Really had a good time.
Lovely wild home zoo 😍

Aloha Nicola! What great footage of your "Common Egret!" At our recycling center, the worker had trained an Egret. Each time a bug; (like in our case a🪳), crawled out of a can or bottle, he tapped on the building and the Common Egret would run over & eagerly eat the 🪳or 🦎! (it was SO cute)!! Great finds!😊
This beach is amazing! While you were picking things out, I kept looking around the screen and wondering what's that? That's typical, but today it was what's that, and that and that and that? So many little bits!
Also, on the memory game: I worked with kids for more than 30 years and we would often play a variation: we'd gather in a circle around a group of disparate little objects and take some time to try to remember them. Than a volunteer would leave the room and the rest of us would choose one thing to remove. Then we would call the child back in to see if they could pick out what was missing. It always amazed me who the kids were who were either terrible at it, or those who would know what was gone as soon as they came to the circle. We'd even make the game harder -- add more objects, re-arrange them once the whiz kid left the room -- and some would still just glance and know. Others who were good would need to take some time and then figure it out. I think these kids would make fantastic mudlarkers. And I feel like you and Si would probably do well at our game! (by the way, I was one of the terrible players; the kids would get such a kick out of me struggling while they all knew the answer.)
And, Mrs. Fox! One of my other favorite RUclips channels is Wildlife Aid. They just posted a video yesterday about a fox getting its head stuck in a bottle. I haven't watched it yet, but my first thought on seeing the thumbnail was, 'Is that fox a mudlarker?'
Finally, Nic, your videos do so much to make my week better, especially when the week has been emotionally challenging. This week was an especially grueling one, but letting myself sink into the gentle, generous flow of your kindness was so sweet and calming. Thanks so much!
wow that is such a delicate ring, i am surprised it survived
a lot of great finds
It is truly such a blessing for all of us how you find the pieces of pottery broken at just the right spots!! BEAUTIFUL FINDS!!
Love your videos always!! I just started reading"The Lost Apothecary" , and the whole book is revolving around a bottle found on the Thames foreshore while the character is in London mudlarking for the first time. I was so excited to realize, this is what you do all the time, tracing the history behind these small objects and bringing their stories to us. If you haven't read the book, you should give it a try.❤❤❤
Oh wow!! Who’s the author?
@@dittohead7044 Sarah Penner
Thanks, just ordered a copy!
You make my Sundays! I so wanted the pottery with the boy on it LOL
Usually, nocturnal animals seen during day means that they are looking for food to feed their babies 😍
What an interesting mudlarking location. I might never leave it, once I got there.
Nic. You have the best eye for finding the best treasures, along with that you have such a kind giving heart! I wish you happy hunting every time you go out! Lita
I am a new subscriber, love your channel! I’ve been watching your old videos to catch up. Love the wildlife views! Your wandering along the Thames and your finds and research are fascinating. Thanks! 🥰💕❤️👍👍
edit, Hello from West Coast California, From Wikipedia:
“A two-winged wheel on a Deutsche Bahn (German railways) building in Dresden. A winged wheel is a symbol used historically on monuments by the Ancient Greeks and Romans and more recently as a heraldic charge. The symbol was associated with the Ancient Greek god Hermes and as a representation of the chariot (or velocipede) of Triptolemus. In heraldry the symbol has been used to represent transport, speed and progress. A three-winged wheel was chosen as the logo of the British Cyclists' Touring Club and at one point was considered "cycling’s most famous symbol". A two-winged version formed the logo of the London General Omnibus Company and, after a merger, formed the basis of the modern London Underground roundel.” Maybe it’s a bus or underground uniform button.
Very good info.
Thank you and welcome to the channel
Lovely, lovely items, Nic! Your wildlife shots are so beautiful, youre lucky to have wildlife right outside your home!❤
Cynthia ❤️ 👋😃
I hope the squirrel is with her babies and not that the fox got her. Another lovely lark and amazing the things you find on a beach that just looks like rocks and broken pottery and seeing Simon was a bonus. 😁
The winged wheel button could also be from the Danish State Railways (Danske Statsbaner, DSB). They still use a stylized form as their logo today.
I lived in Naples for a time and would see a red fox run through a field. It is amazing how wildlife finds a niche in our habitat today! Be safe.
I live in Washington state now where a trip to Washington DC is a once in a lifetime for many children!
Another hunt in Belgium, some excellent finds from another countrys beach 😃
You and Simon are the special few who get to hunt the shorelines of other countries!!
We are very lucky!
We used to call the memory game Kim's game. Anybody else call it that?
Also, the lion could have been part of the Arms of Amsterdam. It has a lion rampant on either side of a shield with three crosses topped with a crown.
Your ability to spot those tiny treasures is truly amazing. Best wishes.
Lovely lark and great finds. The miniatures were so cute , the Herron and Si's gifted key were adorable. I love the water pictures with seeing the wild life and History is always so Good !! Loved your orange Top as well ,you photograph very nicely. Stay safe and Happy . 🌻🌼🌾🧡💛💚
Hello Nicola! Okay, that cobalt blue bottle/vase is to die for! Blessings and good tidings from NorCal. Thanks for another wonderful video full of treasures. My visual memory is terrible, but the idea for your game is sweet! ❣️❤️
That bottle is from a perfume, Evening in Paris. I have one in my blue bottle collection
Super... Nicola, I lived and worked on the former British Guiana, and, on my days off and weekends I used to do treasure hunting, well it was my best time abroad! Congratulations Nicola!
I absolutely love your treasures!!!!! You didn’t hear me when I said oh you’re not going to take that ceramic piece??? Lol. Beautiful sharing and thank you so much.
Wonderful finds today.😊 I love all of the little trinkets that look like jewelry findings to me.❤
Great finds Nicola - thanks for sharing. I was very surprised to see the parakeet at the end of your video - I didn't know there were any in the UK. But I see from a quick Google search that there is quite a population of non-native parakeets in London, originating from zoos and private collections. And yes, do a video in French - it will help those of us trying to improve our own French!
I live over 3,000 miles away on the southeast USA coast. I find it remarkable that your marine birds are the same as ours. You'd think they would be different, but I would feel right at home on the Thames with regard to the wildlife.
Love to watch you and Si Finds. The nature shots are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your finds.
Thank you for sharing your outings and explanations about the wonderful found objects it feels like we are right there with you. I enjoy the shots of the birds too.
If you open the blade there is probably more information on it. I kept hoping you would open it. Good episode!
OMG what wonderful finds. The figure on the shard took my breath away. What an artist could do with that!
Ard's beach is so packed w/treasures - everything u found is so interesting. seeing your little fox friend is very special. thanx for sharing.
This was a fantastic lark on the secret beach. I enjoyed it very much especially when you started to find your metal finds. They are all really amazing pieces and look detailed even though they are so old. It’s always nice to see Simon with you also finding wonderful things. Stay well and safe always until the next time! I hope to see you again soon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜
The idea of doing a video in French is a great thought! Even is we don’t fully understand the words, the intent is there, and you have such a lovely voice, whether speaking in French or English. Thank you for another lovely video!
Nicola this was a most excellent adventure you shared with us today!! Some truly lovely finds. I knew you would be excited about the bracelet!! I agree it’s a shame there is no surname on it. I absolutely adore the butterfly that Ard gifted you! I’d love to see it again after you frame it. Much love from DeeAnn 🇺🇸
Nicole was a lovely day out there so many interesting trinkets little key is perfect, 🗝 a fox🦊wild life at your door🐿.
The lion is rampant, not really resplendent which would imply colourful.
Love your channel!
Hello Nicola. Was introduced to your channel by Paul from ‘Well, I Never’ today. Clicked on your link he had included today & I’m so glad I did. You have a new subscriber & I have a lovely new channel to watch! I’ve always had a knack for finding little lost things & love what you do. Thank you for taking me along.❤
Thank you ❤️
I definitely would enjoy a Nicola speaking French video! I look forward every week to see what you have been up to - thank you for sharing!
Love the videos Nicola . Watching them is sort of therapeutic for me. Don’t know why. Don’t care . Love the history of the things you find. Must have a great collection 😊
That little key would be perfect for Wendy to make a cast of. Imagine all the beautiful jewerly she could make.
Nicola I love your intro, always a moment of peace. The knot looks familiar, it's a Winged wheel. But no further information was found. Beautiful funds again, even in the Fabs.
I love the fox
BEAUTIFUL TREASURES TODAY, AWESOME !! FAVS WOULD BE SMALL BLUE BOTTLE, TINY KEY, AND THE LION W TONGUE!! GREAT DAY, THANKS !!
Nicola, you DO have a zoo outside your window! Love it! Love the fox!!
I find it so interesting how you can see the most wonderful treasures around all those rocks, you mudlarkers truly have a gift!
OMG! 😂 Literally Nicola “Snow” White!

One of my favourite of all your fab videos. The finds! The tinkle of pottery in the waves! The beautiful nature! Thank you, Nicola. PS: Did you bring home the lovely piece of pottery that you found in the sea at the end of the mudlarking segment?
Yes I did Kate but I totally forgot about it! I always forget something! X
@@nicolawhitemudlark Good, leaving that to the elements would be tragic!
The blue bottle reminds me of the Evening in Paris perfume that my mom used to wear. The fox is beautiful.
The lovely blue bottle is from the perfume, "Evening in Paris"...our mom loved it back in the 40's, 50s.
Love your co stars at the end. Thank you Nicola
My little menagerie!
'My' little garden squirrel actually knocks on the back door if I haven't put nuts out for her 😍. I thought she had disappeared to l but spotted that she's been stashing some of the nuts I've been leaving as well as feasting on the last of the cherries from my tree - so much fun having wildlife visitors ❤
A beautiful Birdcage marble! They were very prized in the 1960s when we all played marbles during winter at primary school in outer Melbourne, Victoria.
The shoe reminded me of a non-fiction book by Jack London, The People of the Abyss. He spent several weeks about 1903 living with the homeless in London. One thing that struck him was that the London poor were literally a head shorter than members of the upper class. (Eating enough, especially eating enough protein, makes children grow. Jack London was a strapping 5'11".)
We used to call that memory game 'Kim's game'. No idea who Kim was! What a wonderful beach that is for finding so many interesting things. Great video.
I enjoy your videos so much!If you ever wanted to have a separate channel of the different birds that you see,I would happily watch that, too! The little bottle with the adorable tiny flowers in it,at the end,was so sweet! I look in the rest of the frame when you find things, and think of what I would pick up.Lots of times,I lean towards the rocks,as I am principally a rockhound. It would be delightful to be able to hound the foreshores,as you do.Did you end up keeping the fragment of pottery with the nymph on it?That was pretty cool! My husband and I live near old bottle dumps in a historic gold mining town in California. We used to find old pipes and all of the same things that you scout for.We were into old bottles then.We still have some, but his back, and my knees have made us choose other forms of entertainment.Thank you for sharing your adventures. It is fun to see what the British Isles has.
I too am from gold country in Northern California,I also dug bottles 30 years ago,but my body won’t cooperate like it use to!Nice to hear from someone who I have so much in common!
Your female fox may be eating for her family. As for the parakeet I think it is a small parrot of some kind.
All I get are wild turkeys, red and black squirrels and chipmunks. I forgot to mention a family of raccoons.
Can’t complain can I.
Your finds were so beautiful.
The blue bottle with flowers in it is charming.
Did you keep the blue paper weight?
Some short videos would be nice.
Till next time, bye from Ontario 🇨🇦Canada.
Hi Nicola!! I recently stumbled across your videos and I have to say I just love them!! I love your fun and sunny disposition and I find your videos are interesting, relaxing & very well done!
Thank you! ❤
I love the way you include children in your videos! The treasures game on the tray and the photos at the end, you are a lovely person! ❤
You would be the best thing ever to find on the foreshore Nicola !
Hi Nichola I love your mudlark program I find it very relaxing I watch most days
So glad you enjoy it
Oh I love, love your new foxy visitor! So beautiful! Thanks for showing us your latest finds, wonderful as always!
Hi Nicol .I miss your videos❤💐
Wow some fantastic finds in the video, I can’t believe how many items where just laying on top of the shoreline 👍 Well done Nicola, great job
I'm impressed by your perfect french! And the fox. and the parakeet. and squirrel. and the finds of course.
I really like how most of your videos start out with birds.
Yay, she is back!!!
You had some amazing finds as always. I do love seeing all the wildlife that visits you. I have my own ‘zoo’ that visits every afternoon. I have 16 different species of birds that come for a feed and some of which I’m able to hand feed! I actually hand raised a currawong that I released in my backyard and he comes every day and even still gives me kisses. I love seeing him out living his best ‘wild’ life.
Ahhhh❤ That is lovely!
Well, you had an for the key, and you got an eye for the key, that worked out nicely! What a muddy, messy, magical place the Thames must be, if only there was a place like that, nearby to me, Id be hunting all day as much as I could, if I lived near the Thames I definitely would!... Australia, 235 years of colonization doesn't make for ancient historical finds, just on rare occasions, but not by me!... Im a bit worried about your squirrel, do you think mother fox might be the reason?... Thank you Nicola, for a wonderful outing! Cheers!
Love the blue glass bottle, heron, tiny key. That one piece looked like Oddfellows Great fun, congratulations on the bracelet
Great video, finds & Mr Fox.
You’re better than Snow White! Thanks for your videos they bring so much happiness to so many .
Loved seeing so many beautiful small thing, plus it's a nice to hear of Belgiums history. Seems that you and Simon had a great time mud-larking with Aad. Ps. well done in saying Aads site name, every time you sad ' Mud Baggers' my mind said... 'Mad Buggers' 😂🤣Have a great week being entertained by the fauna outside your window🦊🐿🦜🦜
Hi Nicola such fab finds very 🧐 interesting. Mrs fox is a delight ❤
morning i have a bracelet just like this, it was my mothers she was born in 1915 and died in 1997. will have to check what was written on it, love watching all the mudlarkers
Nicola , I can't get over the feeling that the bracelet was in someway connected to the war.
Thanks Bill.
I was interested in that tile you turned over on your first find.
I have to wonder Nicola, if they ever dredge parts of the Thames what would they find? You find cool items on top, but beneath is 1000’s of years of history. Wild animals know a good heart when they sense it, so they must think you’re a pretty cool chick. 😊
Nick, you could turn some of your beach close ups into jigsaw puzzles! Would be a fun seller esp. for your viewers! Looks like an Evening In Paris perfume bottle. Nice.
That was a beautiful bit of video where you found the sherd of pottery with a naked boy on it just under the water and the little waves kept lapping over and over it. And what a beautiful find it was I can't believe you won't take that home to your studio.
Love your videos they help me with my anxiety ❤👍🏻
Thank you, fantastic video.
What a wonderful mix of friendship, amazing historical treasures and information. Plus beautiful creatures from the wild, to top things all off perfectly, at the end. 😊 x
