Have you guys ever considered doing a look back on sets, like a year after they come out to look at what cards actually saw play, and which ones you thought would get played but did not?
That'd be a cool thing to do every rotation, see how the rotatoes performed in the format, any surprises, any flops. It would also function as an unintentional finance episode listing cards which are playable in the format and are cheaper as they are rotating out of the standard. Might help to encourage people to gradually assemble their highlander toolkit.
You actually can flicker things raised by Izareth to save them, since the replacement effect isn't changing where they're going to it doesn't stop the Flicker from resolving as written. (This is a repeat of the interaction from Whip of Erebos)
Here's the Erebos ruling: If a creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos would leave the battlefield for any reason, it’s exiled instead. However, if that creature is already being exiled, then the replacement effect won’t apply. If the spell or ability that exiles it later returns it to the battlefield (as Chained to the Rocks might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence. The effects from Whip of Erebos will no longer apply to it.
Am I overestimating how much zombies likes to put cards in it's own graveyard? When I saw the new Liliana and Stitcher's Supplier I thought they would both be quite good for zombies, but everyone seemed pretty unimpressed by Liliana and they didn't even mention the Supplier. Graveyard Marshal also seemed good in zombies (and in mono black aggro and maybe Grey Weenie just as a 2 mana 3/2). Hopefully if Alex is back next week he can give some more insight into these matters.
People also forget that embalming and such and scarab god likes zombies too. Champion of wits + Scarab god.. plus liliana + liliana's mastery.. and other goodies.
I think you guys misread Isareth's replacement clause. Whenever a replacement effect says to "exile instead," things like flicker effects will still work, because the thing that's happening is identical. There's technically no action to replace. The same thing works with flickering Unearth creatures, for example.
The actual catch here is the part "instead of putting it anywhere else", so the LTB replacement does not apply to exiling the creature in the first place. Flickering it, whether insantly or with a delay, will remove the effect from it as usual.
Cards I would like to see talked about: White: i think we're good here Blue: Supreme Phantom, 2 mana lord maybe. One with the machine, Platinum Emperion is popular in the format Black: Stitcher's Supplier, a lot of graveyard acceleration for "fair graveyard", Fraying Omnipotence may be too much mana but Pox was a deck, Liliana's Contract this could be fun, additionally this + Arcane Adaptation + creatures is a win condition ( Arcane Adaptation has some shenanigans with the new Liliana as well) Red: I think you pretty well covered. maybe Volley Veteran if you need another Gempalm Incinerator effect.
41:45, hold up, Replacement that says exile it instead putting it anywhere else doesn't aply to exiling. You CAN game it! I know this because as an EDH player I know that Conjurer's Closet+Sedris gives you permanent dudes.
How do ye feel about Militia Bugler, Departed Deckhand, Skilled Animator, Stitcher's Supplier, Elvish Rejuvenator, Runic Armasaur, Thorn Lieutenant, and Vivian Reid?
Dismissive pyromancer I think is pretty good don’t know if it makes it but I think it’s worth a look for some red control/midrange decks especially if you can get it back from the grave
The thing that sticks out to be about Liliana,'s ultimate is that it doesn't exile zombie that would enter your graveyard this turn. This allows for some powerful (yet extremely narrow) combo applications. Any 1 mana zombie + phyrexian altar + a blood artist is lethal. If you can somehow make a 0 mana zombie with a sac outlet you can win the game. It's very narrow but I think it's worth keeping in mind for future cards
There is a cheaper alternative to Nexus of Fate. It costs one more (8 cmc), 6UU Beacon of Tomorrows: Target player takes an extra turn after this one. Shuffle Beacon of Tomorrows into its owner's library. If that didn't really make a splash a I'm not sure that Nexus of Fate will, althogh it does seem far too good to be a buy a box promo!
Asmodeus555 beacon doesn't shuffle in of you mill it though. Its not "that" hard to mill you entire deck which wins you the game with Nexus of Fate while with Beacon you need to draw the beacon and then mill your deck. Nexus being Instant speed also let's you play around with control.
Oh true! Damn! I retract my previous statement, that card is busted and way waaaay to good to be a buy a box promo. That card will just be insanely expensive forever! Gross.
Nexus also shuffles itself if it gets countered (unless the counter exiles the spell). I'm pretty mad that wizards thought this would be fair to print as a b-a-b promo. -___-
It's because those are robot eyes. Serge is really a mech piloted by a guinea pig. If you don't belive me, go re-watch some older episodes. You'll occasionaly hear Surge make some tell-tale squeaking noises. You may think they are ordinary human hiccups. You. Are. Wrong. These are in fact his Guinea to English translator malfunctioning! Know the truth! ;D
Butt stallion is notably a stallion and diamond mare is notably a mare. I wonder if the mare part is their attempt to remove any possible association with butt stallion.
Isareth - This is nonsense. There is so much text on this that is restrictive and unnecessary. And yeah, it doesn't make them zombies... why? WHY? There are several design mistakes with this card... it makes me wonder if WOTC fired their proofreaders...

This.
That’s an amazing idea
RSTNumenorean I cannot thumbs up this as much as I want to.

ArmorArmadillo thank you I was yelling at the screen. Similar effects include Sidris, The Traitor King and Whip of Erebos.
Here's the Erebos ruling:
If a creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos would leave the battlefield for any reason, it’s exiled instead. However, if that creature is already being exiled, then the replacement effect won’t apply. Good old Conjurer's Closet+Sedris :D

Rooftop storm and liliana with a sac outlet for infinite shenanigans

Great episode guys! I would really love to see a deck list for Curb Your Enthusiasm/Simic Timewalks
Dismissive pyromancer I think is pretty good don’t know if it makes it but I think it’s worth a look for some red control/midrange decks especially if you can get it back from the grave
Ok all you need is isochron sceptor with a mystical tutor then Nexus of fate
Or you could cast omniscience into enter the infinite then put Nexus of fate on top
Best angel without flying? Mutavault
Surprised Serge didn't excitedly mention Goblin Trashmaster can destroy Platinum Empereon.

Smagasins they've already got a four card standard combo with walking ballista.
hellsingfan89 yeah there are some Arcane Adaptation/Conspiracy shenanigans you can play
If you're able to ult Tezzeret, the best card I can think of to put on the battlefield at your end step would be Omniscience.
I live in kirkland which is right next to mox boarding house, and i basically introduced mox to highlander so you are welcome
Milita Bugler? Seems good as a 2/3 that draws a card from the top 5.
Would militia buegeler be good in death and taxes?
Oooooh is a gang of spicy boys
YEAH SET REVIEWS ARE MY FAVORITE!!!
I’m so happy omniscience got reprinted!
Isareth should work like Whip of Erebos, so blinking the creature into exile should still work, as far as I know.
I think I've asked this before but what is the intro song called? Does anyone know?
I legit paused the video to see how many angels there were without flying, then Graham found it. :)
Sounds like Dark Depths becomes an auto-include in Blue Moon lists...
Serge
When will Alex be back?
Jer is slowly turning into Bobby Hill.
There are TWO creatures with the creature type Horse Fish. Two.
good shit right there
Nexus of Fate + Isochron Sceptre Liam I challenge you to make it happen

Is it just me or does Serge keep staring into your soul

what about Suncleanser??? :)
Doesn't really do enough and the 1/4 body isn't super exciting.
Sarkhan, Dragonsoul
When butt stallion is in the set
Butt stallion is notably a stallion and diamond mare is notably a mare. I wonder if the mare part is their attempt to remove any possible association with butt stallion.
Jake applegate doesn't mean the nickname cant be butt stallion
Serge-Mare
noncreature clones, there's also fated infatuation
Is it just me or does Liam sometimes look like Grenzo?
Respondent angel, just turned soul sisters to stompy deck
Isareth - This is nonsense. There is so much text on this that is restrictive and unnecessary. And yeah, it doesn't make them zombies... why? WHY? There are several design mistakes with this card... it makes me wonder if WOTC fired their proofreaders...
What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with proofreading. And limitations are there for a reason.
