In the comments section of this video people asked about box number.
I remember in the old days when I was an Auxiliary Fire Captain in the FDNY. We didn't have the ten code system. To report a fire people had to run to the corner towards a lamppost where there was a yellow light signifying that nearby was a FIRE ALARM BOX. They would put the handle down and release it it would send a telegraph signal to the central dispatch office. In seconds the dispatcher would look up the box number and insert the corresponding card that would transmit the alarm to the fire houses over the firehouse telegraph bell system which were PRIMARY AND SECONDARY. The firemen on watch would look up the box number location and turn company out.
For example lets take a second ALARM fire in Brooklyn New York at the corner Graham Avenue and Ten Eyck Walk. It would be BOX 257 that originally came in as a MANUAL CLASS THREE BOX because it was a Junior high school.
So the initial box would be Class Three BOX 257 a FDNY MANUAL BOX that was transmitted over the radio and telegraph system.
    ... .. ..... ....... ... yes it was repeated.
    3 2 5 7 3
A manual alarm box is a fire box that was actually PULLED BY A PERSON
Over the radio you would hear
"BROOKLYN ANNOUNCING BROOKLYN CLASS THREE BOX 2 5 7 AN FDNY MANUAL BOX "
Now upon arrival lets say that the first due Engine is Engine Company 216. They arrive to see flames shooting out of the first floor windows of the school.
The Engine Company Officer would radio the dispatcher ENGINE TWO ONE SIX TO BROOKLYN URGENT. (circa 1960s) The dispatcher would say Two One Six go ahead. Then the Engine Company Officer would say BROOKLYN SIGNAL THIRTY ( meaning that he has a working fire) that lets everybody who is responding that they have a big fire.) Then the Engine company officer would radio ENGINE TWO ONE SIX TO BROOKLYN OVER. and the dispatcher would say BROOKLYN TO ENGINE TWO ONE SIX GO AHEAD. And two one six would say TWO ONE SIX SIGNAL SEVEN FIVE ( is the ALL HANDS meaning that he is requesting for every piece of fire apparatus to assigned to the first alarm to respond and they will be put to work, he is also notifying the BATTALION CHIEF (in this case it the THREE FIVE BATTALION)
that they have a working fire. On that signal the DEPUTY CHIEF of the DIVISION (in this case it's the ELEVENTH DIVISION KNOWN AS DIVISION ONE ONE over the radio).
Now let's get to the SECOND ALARM.
First a brief history of FDNY SUPER PUMPER SYSTEM which was relatively new back then. The entire SUPER PUMPER SYSTEM responds on the second ALARM for parts of Brooklyn and below 59th street in Manhattan and to the Rockaways in Queens.
    Now the SECOND ALARM
Upon arrival the 35th Battalion will see flames shooting out of the first floor windows of an OCCUPIED SCHOOL BUILDING he will say THREE FIVE BATTALION TO BROOKLYN URGENT.
Brooklyn will say GO AHEAD URGENT
and then the Battalion will say BATTALION THREE FIVE TO BROOKLYN TRANSIT A SECOND ALARM. The following sequences will happen with the Bells and radio:
On the signal SEVEN FIVE you will get over the Bells in BROOKLYN:
    ....... ..... .. ..... .......
    7. 5. 2. 5. 7
Now the rest of the firehouses OUTSIDE OF BROOKLYN will get
    ....... ....... ....... ..... .. ..... .......
    7. 7. 7. 5 2 5. 7
The first two sevens are the codes for the Brought of Brooklyn
The next seven FIVE is the ALL HANDS
The two five seven is the physical location of the fire BOX on Graham Avenue and Ten Eyck Walk in Brooklyn New York
Now for the SECOND ALARM in Brooklyn you will get
    .. .. .. ..... .......
    2. 2 2. 5. 7
The rest of the city will get over the Bells:
    ......... ......... .. .. .. ..... .......
    9. 9. 2 2. 2. 5 7
Now that's when things go crazy with over the Bells and the relocation signals
15 CONSECUTIVE dings is for an Engine Company to relocate to the quarters of another Engine Company
17 is for a Ladder Company to relocate to the quarters of another Ladder company. Those companies that are being relocated are covering the area of the companies that are fighting for second ALARM fire. It's to make sure that the areas are not left without any fire protection.
Let's say that Ladder company 108 is assigned to the initial BOX on the first ALARM.
No the area of 108 is UNPROTECTED so another Ladder company from a lower volume of fire activity will cover Ladder 108
    17- 108 - 128
    17 equals Ladder company relocation
108 equals what Ladder company is to be covered
128 equals the Ladder company that will go to the quarters of Ladder company 108
Now with the Engine company it will be
    15- 216- 259
That's Engine company 259 is going to the quarters of Engine 216.
There were no teletype machines or computers back then. So the Housewatch and other firemen had to literally COUNT EACH SINGLE
and enter it into the company's journal.
    ................. . .......... ........ . .. . .....
    17. 1. 0. 8. 1 2 6
For the number ZERO you have TEN CONSECUTIVE PINGS
    ..........
    10
As I said that there were no ten CODE
So the usage of the code 10-04 didn't exist in the FDNY
    It was
    RODGER, WILCO and OVER.
We didn't know BUNKER GEAR. It was the Thigh high boots and the rubber turnout coats with the current helmets without any type of eye protection. Back then the firemen responded without donning their SCOTT AIR PACKS and very often they entered the burning buildings without any Air Packs. It was a lot coughing, snooty noses, heavy breathing, teary eyes and tons of soot on your face.
Those were known as THE WAR YEARS OF THE NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT.
    Edit
Back then there were no roofs or coverings on the RIGS no comfortable air conditioned cabs and for the Engine companies we stood on the BACK STEPS holding on to the handles like on a subway train. Or one of side of the Ladder companies with a removable tiller steering wheel and windshield.

flash over. doors can be closed to control air flow and not cook the person. windows only feed the fire and do not let you control air flow. fire needs 4 thing AIR HEAT FUEL CHEMICAL Reaction. the more of these you control the better. windows give no control and are last resort when you have un protected people inside. fast way to increase the heat and fuel burn rate on air controlled fires.

@bart Simpson i never said anything about flash over... and sounds like you are talking out ya ass. i know new york Fire Departments have a policy of not running busting windows until they are able to put water to the inside ceiling... they are the ones who got the policy created and created the training. are you saying that these guys did not do it correctly. they did it by the books and safely. they read the smoke vented properly and tried to keep ventilation controlled. it was a air controlled fire. you must have had allot of sorry ya building is now at ground level. Insurance companies must have hated you. O and as a NFPA instructor. and yes some fire departments have a retarded old policy of take every window out and defensive only policy.

Back in the old days, before telephones, they had pull boxes. People would go to the pull box, pull the alarm and the dispatch center would get a notification of a fire alarm box. They'd look up the box number and dispatch the appropriate units. They still use the box numbers today.

@@andyoxleyonhistravels Sorry Andy, I just couldn't resist the opening. You did say opens "all" doors.
Yes, dwellings (private home and multi-family buildings) have inward opening doors here in NYC as well. But I'd imagine that in the UK, that places of public assembly, factories, and certain other commercial occupancies are required by code to have doors that open outward in the direction of the means of egress.
But I can't imagine that it's SOP to have a firefighter routinely carry a battering ram as the forcible entry tool of choice to an upper floor of a multi-story walk-up apartment building every time there is an obvious job. It would seem that you'd either have to send someone down to street level retrieve the tool or summon someone to bring the battering ram upstairs once you determined you need to force the door. Aren't small hand held hydraulic forcible entry tools employed? Do they not use a "set of irons", i.e., a Halligan and an axe?
What forcible entry tool do you think was used extensively when one was required at Grenfell?

Come on man!!! It’s what the truck companies train to do. It wasn’t like the camera was in her face. Don’t show people in court they are innocent until to provide guilty. Don’t show holocaust victims. Where does it end

@bart Simpson why should names on the jackets be removed?

Respect what? The white blur shaped like a person? His distance kept the viewer from seeing anything that could id the person from sight.
Seems like from a bunch of other comments on this video that the bart Simpson person was nothing but a troll having deleted all of his comments.

You think the would have access to a battering ram like the cops have, that would have saved minutes on that job.

Great catch. Just don't get in the way of the cops watching their heroes at work...they won't have any good stories to tell at the dinner table. LOL That's why God made firefighters, so cops could have heroes too.
