They thought they would break us in three months. German soldiers with a smile began to invade our country. Four years later they fled from there, in their eyes there was fear, anger, despair and rage. How many people died on this earth?

@Abcd Öäzxc yes, of course LEND LEASE saved our country, not the men who fought since first day of nazi invasion, not the children and women who worked 16 hours a day to produce tanks, ammos, weapons and etc, not the partisans who fought day and night in the deep of the enemy's frontline, NOT THE FUCKING YOUNG GUYS who fought until the last breathe, OF COURSE the war was won by the power of americans canned food. Fuck off and learn the history of Great Patriotic War.

@Abcd Öäzxc on the Eastern front Nazi's and their satellites like Hungary, Romania, Italy and many others lost 9 millions men. My country lost almost 12 million soldier and 14 million civilians (all because Nazi's mass genocide and other brutalytis of war). On the Western front Nazi's and their satellites lost near 540 thousand soldier. Fucking think about it. You was brainwashed by Hollywood and western propaganda. Yes, I'm hate communism too, but we are not talking about that, we are talking about spirit of my countrymens.

I don't. In the very end it was equal with everyone. The Russians and German were basically like if you scratch my back I scratch yours. The Russians took over german houses while the citizens lived in it. They saw german soldiers get interrogated and after it was over they took them to their front yard and cut their throats.

As an American born in the 50's I grew up with the war still fresh in everyone's mind. I had 6 uncles who served in the war and 4 were seriously wounded. The way the Germans fought in the East was almost completely different than the war in the West. Germans treated Soviets completely different than they did the Western Allies. We treated German POW's quite well, so well that many moved here after the war. Soviets and Germans kept their hatred for decades. Eastern war was a tragedy...

Funny how time "changes" history. I've studied military history for 32 years and have an extensive library. When I was a kid in the 50's many of my Uncles and older men (in their 30's and 40's) still REALLY hated the Japanese, but I never heard of any hatred for the Germans. Back then, before "political correctness" most folks said that as long as Hitler was only killing "communists and jews" we should have left him alone. Sounds kind of ugly now, but was perfectly normal in 1950's USA...

To add insult to injury, during the Stalinist Great Purge from 1937 to 1938, 35,000 Red Army personnel were all executed, including Marshall Tukhachevsky. This is the reason why when the Germans executed Operation Barbarossa, they made such sweeping advances into the Soviet Union. Suffering from the Great Purge and from World War II, hopefully the Russian people can now find peace and harmony.

He always told us: ''Don't believe those who will slander germans as cruel and ignorant people, on the contrary soldiers were kind and friendly, primary folk always tried to support them.'' Despite the fact he tried to escape and was captured by guards he never told anything bad about Germans. The battlefield in Kursk was filled with many hundreds of burnt tanks and crashed aircraft, and so many dead soldiers. The difference was that while the Russians suffered heavy losses but could continue as planned and shift from defense to a large counter attack in a wide front, the German army in the East just lost the core of its remaining force.
In the summer of 1941 the German army attacked Russia and was stopped only near Moscow.

Becuase most of those soldiers were frontline troops in Summer 1941 which were encircled, had their communication with other troops cut off and only choices were to surrender or to die while inflicting only minimal causalties upon the enemy.
Oh, and Germany lost almost 3 million asprisoners in the war. Romania lost about half a million as prisoners.
Just look at US garrison in Phillipines: all of them surrendered to Japanes when they ended up in similar situation.

Due to the lack of modern roads in the Soviet Union, and given the weather conditions (dry roads, mud, etc). At times horses worked better than mechanized transport. The German tanks had a narrow track which hindered movement. Half-tracks were the key. But the Germans did not plan for a long war and did not prepare the army for movement over a large area as the USSR. And the German mechanized forces constantly brokedown during Oper. Barbarossa.

In the summer of 1943, in the battle of Kursk, the much weaker German army broke its fist and lost its best remaining units in its attempt to regain the initiative in one last major attack, for which the Russians were fully prepared.

The german war machine was the most powerful army in human history at that point. To think less than 100 years earlier war was standing in a straight line trading shots at the other army. France fell in two weeks. It was the beginning of modern warfare. Russia will always be remembered as the people that fought against this machine. As a American I am very proud Russia has been on our side during both world wars, and heaven forbid we have a WW3 I hope Russia will fight side by side with the allies again.

Right, why was it NECESSARY for America to give so much aid to UK from 1939-1942 when it would not have harmed them for UK to fall? No way Britain was a bridgehead to invade USA.
FDR sympathised with Britain's plight, was opposed to Nazism and said so in appealing to the senate to approve the Lend-Lease. No mention of future war.
It was the nicest thing ever, and as a loan, not a gift, Britain retained its dignity as paying her dues, not dependant on charity but just a favour from a friend.

I Think if Hitler would have gotten out of the way and let his more battle seasoned generals make key strategic decisions involving troop and equipment placement they would have taken over the world. (scary thought) We probably would be corresponding in German right now... wouldn't you agree. I was not aware of that fact about the Red Army, much appreciated.

@theoldgalah The answer is: West refused to take gold as payment for all that technology and machinery Soviet Union needed for industrialization, other countries was the only source of theses thing by the time for post-agrarian, demolished by a civil war Soviet Union. However the west still accepted natural resources and wheat in particular! Why? Because this was a direct plan against USSR!

@LongLiveTheUSSR you do realise donrt you that you lost the cold war. you also do realise that your country went from being soviet to trying democrcy to going back to soviet. you also do realise that your counrty is close to 3rd world conditions in most of its provinces. the las twar you won was on georgia a small previously occipied state that wants independance. fall by the wayside of history USSR. for thats what u are history.

@Steve96461 And then Stalin and the Russian soldiers? Russian soldiers were fighting for their lives and freedom, not for Stalin, who, incidentally, a Georgian, not Russian.

Two wrongs don't make a right, however apparently the Germans were a lot more forgiving to PoWs and civilians than the Russians. I almost want to say that the Russians had it coming but that would be a terrible thing to say.

The bulk of the Japanese army was stationed in China, fighting. The bulk of Germany's army was stationed in the Soviet Union, fighting. That's why the Soviet Union was retreating for the first part of the war. And then America joined and struggled with the few German forces in Western Europe. Meanwhile the Japanese army in China was not moved to fight the Americans.

I think about Americans ( not sure how many) went to Russia when the depression happened before the war. Soviet soldiers it seems received no mercy from anyone. I remember hearing even Jewish people in concentration camps felt bad for Russian soldiers. It would be a miserable situation to be in. I would flee to the woods, but thats because I hate communism from learning about them. But I know why people fall for it, and I bet if you take out human nature it would work.

@debashir And what was the alternative ? making defensive war till Soveit Union equip themself and get ready to kick the germans back , as it actually happened in 1943-1944 , the moment for decisive psyhological blow was in 1941-1942 from then on it was too late .
