What's is strange ? Only for one year of war, 1941 - 1942 ,Germans murdered 3 millions Russians [ POW ].From 1941 to 1945 Germans army killed 27 millions people of USSR.
I can only wonder if the German soldiers writing about the Russian prisoners of war ended up being marched through Moscow to Siberia, with someone in the Soviet Army thinking the same of them.
@snakemanmike i just heard that about hitler, and yeah i knew about göering thanks for the info, by the way, do you know what was the combat record for göering?
As an American born in the 50's I grew up with the war still fresh in everyone's mind. I had 6 uncles who served in the war and 4 were seriously wounded. The way the Germans fought in the East was almost completely different than the war in the West. Germans treated Soviets completely different than they did the Western Allies. We treated German POW's quite well, so well that many moved here after the war. Soviets and Germans kept their hatred for decades. Eastern war was a tragedy...
At 5:12. That footage is out of place, they're supposed to show the beginning of the German offensive against the Soviets, but there's an SKS in picture, and that gun wasn't around until late 1944, so that is footage from nearly the end of the war.
Funny how time "changes" history. I've studied military history for 32 years and have an extensive library. When I was a kid in the 50's many of my Uncles and older men (in their 30's and 40's) still REALLY hated the Japanese, but I never heard of any hatred for the Germans. Back then, before "political correctness" most folks said that as long as Hitler was only killing "communists and jews" we should have left him alone. Sounds kind of ugly now, but was perfectly normal in 1950's USA...
Four out of five German soldiers killed in World War Two died on the Eastern Front. The Red Army suffered ten times as many dead as the Western Allies combined. Russian soldiers were/are badass. I am from the States but respect must be given to whom it is due. I am glad we are allies of the Motherland because I would hate to suffer there wrath!
@nocandy4u2 I fail to understand your skepticism from your earlier comment then. You're saying that all these wars are justified? All the civilian casualties are justified? Please, do elaborate.
To add insult to injury, during the Stalinist Great Purge from 1937 to 1938, 35,000 Red Army personnel were all executed, including Marshall Tukhachevsky. This is the reason why when the Germans executed Operation Barbarossa, they made such sweeping advances into the Soviet Union. Suffering from the Great Purge and from World War II, hopefully the Russian people can now find peace and harmony.
My grandpa also fought in this war, and was in German captivity. He always told us: ''Don't believe those who will slander germans as cruel and ignorant people, on the contrary soldiers were kind and friendly, primary folk always tried to support them.'' Despite the fact he tried to escape and was captured by guards he never told anything bad about Germans. One whistle was enough to gather german soldiers to wrestle just for joke, ofcourse in epsence of their senior-ranking officers :))
A few of my family members died in the siege of Leningrad my grandfathers 9 month year old sister was killed due to bombings and my grandmas family got out just on time and my great uncle died in 1943 as a soviet machine gunner and my grandmas father had 2 of his legs blown off by a artillery shell and he was a soviet infantry man
The battlefield in Kursk was filled with many hundreds of burnt tanks and crashed aircraft, and so many dead soldiers. The difference was that while the Russians suffered heavy losses but could continue as planned and shift from defense to a large counter attack in a wide front, the German army in the East just lost the core of its remaining force. In the summer of 1941 the German army attacked Russia and was stopped only near Moscow.
It was necessity of preventive strike against Stalin, but cruelty to civilian and POW was the fatal mistake of Hitler. As a Russian veteran recalled, "We were between two relentless beasts, and we chose Stalin who at least spoke Russian."
Becuase most of those soldiers were frontline troops in Summer 1941 which were encircled, had their communication with other troops cut off and only choices were to surrender or to die while inflicting only minimal causalties upon the enemy. Oh, and Germany lost almost 3 million asprisoners in the war. Romania lost about half a million as prisoners. Just look at US garrison in Phillipines: all of them surrendered to Japanes when they ended up in similar situation.
In America and the West, you've seen many WW II movies with sympathetic portraits of Germans....none in Soviet movies. There's many stories of German and British veterans befriending each other and having joint reunions....I'm guessing that there's no jovial reunions of the veterans of Stalingrad.

Due to the lack of modern roads in the Soviet Union, and given the weather conditions (dry roads, mud, etc). At times horses worked better than mechanized transport. The German tanks had a narrow track which hindered movement. Half-tracks were the key. But the Germans did not plan for a long war and did not prepare the army for movement over a large area as the USSR. And the German mechanized forces constantly brokedown during Oper. Barbarossa.
In the summer of 1942 the German army attacked in South Russia and reached the Volga river at Stalingrad before it was stopped, and lost the strategic initiative to the recovering Russian army. In the summer of 1943, in the battle of Kursk, the much weaker German army broke its fist and lost its best remaining units in its attempt to regain the initiative in one last major attack, for which the Russians were fully prepared.

I hate communisim, but i believe that in WW2 the majority of both the russian and german soldiers were victims of circumstance, and simply trying to stay alive. each side had its own propaganda, and each side was indoctrinated. over the years some former russian and german soldiers have reconciled, and maybe this gives humanity some hope.
Your grandfather had a good luck, my one was taken by Russian troops , died in Siberia after few weeks on march 1943. but I don't hate Russian people: war is war. Never more wars in Europe!
@Scoutrussp7 The Japanese would have continued their offensive efforts (which they ceased in early 1942 after attacking the US) and a combine push from the west and the East would have decimated Russia. Remeber the only reason the Russian were able to keep producing weapons(even at the low numbers they did) was because they moved as many of the factories as they could from Stalingrad into scattered areas in the East right where the Japanese would have attacked.
@TankNutJohn89 1. Not Russia, but USSR. USSR included 15 states and only 75-80% of population where russians (if you dont know)... 2. Don't worry, I can count and compare numbers. I just have some another numbers (approximately): USSR - 8900000, Germany - 4500000, Japan - 1900000, Italy - 350000, USA - 400000.
@ReaganSmashObama Ok, the poison candy part is bs. The soviets didn't have an abundance of poisoned candy alright. Alot of them didn't even know what a lightbulb was because they lived in such remote areas. Neither side showed an abundance of humanity in the war.
@karligarl: However, 3,3 Million Germans died in WW2, maybe 3 Million because russian Soldiers. 13 Million Russian Soldiers won against 3 Million Germans. That isn't anything special. 200.000 US Soldiers fought 300.000 Germans & 1.700.000 Japanese Soldiers. The most casualties ( just Soldiers ) had Russia, sorry. Russia > 13.000.000 China > 3.500.000 Germany 3.300.000 Japan > 1.700.000 UK > 370.000 Italy > 330.000 USA > 220.000
@Heer88 too many of German soldiers have died due to Hitler's stubbornness, I personally think it might have been avoided should the Germans prepare for winter war and not advance too fast to enemy territories not to become unable to supply their army in a proper way.
i wouldn't have had anything against soviet losing this war...but then again i'm quite biased considering my country lost 10% of it's entire population in dead and wounded defending our small country's independence against stalin's soviet.
I Think if Hitler would have gotten out of the way and let his more battle seasoned generals make key strategic decisions involving troop and equipment placement they would have taken over the world. (scary thought) We probably would be corresponding in German right now... wouldn't you agree. I was not aware of that fact about the Red Army, much appreciated.
@theoldgalah The answer is: West refused to take gold as payment for all that technology and machinery Soviet Union needed for industrialization, other countries was the only source of theses thing by the time for post-agrarian, demolished by a civil war Soviet Union. However the west still accepted natural resources and wheat in particular! Why? Because this was a direct plan against USSR!
not really if soviet didn't receive the lend lease weapons from USA when their prototype T-34 still not ready yet, the soviets might not survive quite long
@LongLiveTheUSSR you do realise donrt you that you lost the cold war. you also do realise that your country went from being soviet to trying democrcy to going back to soviet. you also do realise that your counrty is close to 3rd world conditions in most of its provinces. the las twar you won was on georgia a small previously occipied state that wants independance. fall by the wayside of history USSR. for thats what u are history.
@Steve96461 And then Stalin and the Russian soldiers? Russian soldiers were fighting for their lives and freedom, not for Stalin, who, incidentally, a Georgian, not Russian.
Two wrongs don't make a right, however apparently the Germans were a lot more forgiving to PoWs and civilians than the Russians. I almost want to say that the Russians had it coming but that would be a terrible thing to say.
The bulk of the Japanese army was stationed in China, fighting. The bulk of Germany's army was stationed in the Soviet Union, fighting. That's why the Soviet Union was retreating for the first part of the war. And then America joined and struggled with the few German forces in Western Europe. Meanwhile the Japanese army in China was not moved to fight the Americans.
I think about Americans ( not sure how many) went to Russia when the depression happened before the war. Soviet soldiers it seems received no mercy from anyone. I remember hearing even Jewish people in concentration camps felt bad for Russian soldiers. It would be a miserable situation to be in. I would flee to the woods, but thats because I hate communism from learning about them. But I know why people fall for it, and I bet if you take out human nature it would work.
@debashir And what was the alternative ? making defensive war till Soveit Union equip themself and get ready to kick the germans back , as it actually happened in 1943-1944 , the moment for decisive psyhological blow was in 1941-1942 from then on it was too late .

27 million Soviet soldiers died during WW2...
Hail to the fallen, hail to all heroes! Your dindt die nor suffer for nothing.
@CSATexan O.o !!!
I must ask, are you a paid troll?
Why in this video are so many soviet soldiers of tatar, baschkir, kaukasian nazionality and so little of russian?
"No longer rely"? When in our history were we able to "rely"?
United We Stand!
Divided We FALL!
@rod3067 so you don`t have a `tash or a vegatarian
Two strong allies in fight against each other. Both - Germany & Soviets begun this war in September'39 by aggression on Poland
Video starts at 1:48
@TankNutJohn89 1.
I know they didnt help directly but as I said amrican supplies were in use in stalingrad as well
Well that backfired, didn't it?
You can be right, mine were the german official numbers.
wtf u always talking about katyn? u gonna answer on every sentence by "katyn" word?
umm I see... I thought there was like this website where I could find further opinions.
wehrmatch was too smart.the soldiers fought brave.
Russia > 13.000.000
China > 3.500.000
Germany 3.300.000
Japan > 1.700.000
UK > 370.000
Italy > 330.000
USA > 220.000
They really tried to "save" my land. And I'm always grateful to those guys who didnt let them.
Не совсем так.
Первая всеткаи англия начала воевать с немцами. Когда немцы подошли к Сталинграду, нам банально было нечем воевать.
@theoldgalah Looks like no answer?
The Krauts did not in invade Britain . Then they were F--D
NO WAR !!!!!! PEACE !!!!
not really if soviet didn't receive the lend lease weapons from USA when their prototype T-34 still not ready yet, the soviets might not survive quite long
@RushEvolution The alternative was Soviet Union fully equiped attacking much less in population Reich .
germany invaded russia with 3.5 million troops... majority did not returned but Russia suffered greatly.
Russian soldiers were fighting for their lives and freedom, not for Stalin, who, incidentally, a Georgian, not Russian.
antony beevor-Stalingrad, for example
But I know why people fall for it, and I bet if you take out human nature it would work.
they had write with caps not the "WORLD WAR 2" but the name " IN COLORS" xD
Deosn't look like one too me, the butt end is too long...I think that the Russians killing their own troops was a big waste, quite pathetic actually
@debashir And what was the alternative ? making defensive war till Soveit Union equip themself and get ready to kick the germans back , as it actually happened in 1943-1944 , the moment for decisive psyhological blow was in 1941-1942 from then on it was too late .
The British supplied the Russian army with convoys to Archangle ...many died a terible death in freezing seas....we did our best. the russians suffered terribly, as did the whole of Europe
