She was obviously capable of making amazing music. It will be up to that Canadian family to decide whether they feel she took advantage of them. It’s also possible that her specific music is what it took for a Native American musician to get noticed, and the visibility she lent to related causes did more harm than good. That said, it’s beyond unfortunate that she did not find a way to come clean years ago, and that she didn’t do more to spotlight real Native American/First Nations artists, or just refuse related awards so that other Native American artists could be recognized. She wouldn’t even have had to spell out why.
I first listened to her at age 13. I'm now 63 and she's still going strong and better than ever.
I've always loved her too. Thankfully for RUclips, I can see these live performances.
