Got one, works great! A few tips: 1- Get yourself some of the disk filters that are made for a percolator. You’ll get cleaner coffee, especially if you’re using pre-ground. 2- When it starts to perc, dial the heat back as much as you can to keep the perc going. If you don’t, sometimes the basket will overflow, especially if you’re using a filter. 3- Take the basket out before you pour!

Bought this 2 months ago and it’s now my daily coffee maker! Out of all the ways i’ve made coffee, this is the most enjoyable, least wasteful and most tasteful! Would highly recommend. I have the 6-cup and its great for about 4 solid cups of coffee. But you can always percolate a high concentrate brew and add water (as needed). *There’s also markings in the mug to brew 6 or 4 cups* cheers! ☕️

I have the GSI 36 cup stainless steel percolator. One improvement I've made is to replace the lid hinge pin with one that is removeable. It makes cleaning much easier to be able to remove the lid entirely so it doesn't flap around, especially if you are rinsing it out in a stream.

  • @TG-ip1ei

Love this percolator. Had a friend try to tell me that the grounds go on the top of the lid basket and that the actual basket was to catch "missed grounds". I frankly don't care about small bits of grounds in my mug or cup as they usually sink to the bottom anyway.
The coffee tastes wayyyy better doing it the right way, in the basket, and timing it for personal liking of preferred/desired strength.
I use it at home, on the road...I use it and bring everywhere. Love it and am grateful for this little beauty!

I collect different types of coffee makers and i've got several types of percolators that have been pretty inconsistent for me. What an eye opener it was when i finally got my hands on one of those vintage, all glass, Pyrex percolators. It took out all the guessing as to when the water was boiling, how dark the coffee was at any point, how quickly the water was flowing through the basket, etc. adjusting the heat was easy. I get the most consistent results with that type of percolator, by far. I realize a heavy glass coffee maker isn't ideal for hiking but i just wanted to put that out there for those who just like playing with coffee makers like i do.

Cool. You'll eventually find one, but you need to go often. Take a look online to see what all the pieces look like and that none are missing. (6 parts total) I've also seen many with mismatched parts, like having a short stem that doesn't extend into the pot lid, Or 2 bottom covers for the basket and no top cover.
The thrift stores in my area are just catching on to the resale value of these things but they are still cheaper than ebay which is around $100+

I bought the 3-cup model at least 15 years ago and I'm still using it. I'd recommend buying a glass knob to replace the plastic one. I got one called something like Fitz-All and it fit my coffee pot perfectly. Also, although the GSI 3-cup model is advertised as making 2 or 3 cups, it actually yields 1 or 2 cups. When I fill the water to the 3-cup line, it makes 2 large cups and when I pour the water to the 2-cup line, I end up with 1 large cup. This is fine with me because I live alone.

Late to the party but I want to say properly perc’d coffee is great. You need to start with a well built one, which this is. Immediately I noticed that unlike many this one actually has a deep enough basket to fit the coffee you need for the water you’re cycling through. On this 6 cup model, 6-8 tablespoons is about right. I recommend a grind about as coarse as French press. It should look coarser than regular salt maybe like kosher but not huge like flake salt. Use a dark roast, the subtleties of light roast will be lost. San Francisco Bay from Costco works well. Grind fresh. Next, once it starts percolating, lower the heat til you’re getting 1-2 percs per second until the very end when it will get aggressive like a moka pot. With this model, perc no longer than 4 minutes. Then let the water drain from the basket for a minute and pour. Made myself a reflectix 2 piece cozy for this perc that works great. Happy brewing!

I want to know if steel handle goes all the way through the silicone grip, or, is there a gap. My plan is to cut off the silicone so it can be used on a campfire (carefully, so as not to melt the plastic viewing bubble). As is, this pot is not made for fires, and has no bail for hanging it. The 6 cup "personal " size is what appeals to me.

I just bought one of the 6 cup (I believe) pots from Wal-Mart. This is the first time I've ever used a percolator coffee pot.
First try.., when I poured into cup.., the water was still clear. Obviously didn't let it heat long enough.
Second try (after watching this video)...I waited longer, until I could see dark water bubbling in sight glass.
    Success...kinda.
The coffee came out tasting great. However there was quite a good bit of grounds in my cup.
    Q; is that normal ??
I made sure lid was over the grounds basket, and lid on pot.

    • @insulinman14

Do you feel that the GSI works well with a red camp alcohol burner? The burner does not have control valve which allows you to lower the heat once the GSI begins to percolate. It appears that the GSI needs a lower heat setting once it starts to percolate. Please provide your suggestion.

  • @Thereal111t

I love percolated coffee as much as the next guy but where are you getting your numbers about how popular perc coffee is in the US? It seems to me that once Mr. coffee and Mrs keurig came on the scene that percs have been edged out. Add to that most coffee snobs tend to revile the idea of percolated coffee. Personally I use the 12cup at home and I have one of the 9cup models in my car camp gear. Also, FYI there is a company called chinook that sells a virtually identical product (wood handle instead of silicone) with a stuff sack. I did a comparison of the two 3cup models and then gave away the gsi one.

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 3 года назад

yeah, just looking at literally any department store's coffee maker section tells you that electric filtered auto drip is number one in north america. I've heard the stovetop espresso is number one in Europe, like the "Bialetti" brand moka pot style, but i have no data for that. As for coffee snobs, i think they've moved onto "pour over" drip type coffee which is why most major coffee shops have added it to their product line. I've watched a few professional coffee taste testing things and most of them say the french press is superior.
