Ryan Newman's black #12 ALLTEL was one of the most badass paint schemes

I know I liked it too! Kurt Busch has a pretty cool pain scheme for 2016

2:13:45 After they head to this commercial break, the infamous "Close. Matt's. Mic." argument between Bill Weber and Matt Yocum is heard on the international feed.

First race without Benny Parsons since Watkins Glen 1999, when it was just Bob Jenkins and Ned Jarrett.

This race was Harvick's only self spin in his entire Cup career. And it was due to aero as well. Crazy impressive

Holy shit there were so many people in the grand stands back then!!!

Yeah and there were stands in turns 3 and 4 back then and even those were full.

This was back in the days when they were still adding grand stands and the races were always sold out.

I was at this race in the stands behind pit row which did me no wonders in staying out of the hot sun and avoiding sunburn. Still a fun race and I got to talk to and get some autographs from pit crew members by the fence

as a die hard Bowyer fan watching my first full season of racing, this race was a knife in my 14 year old heart 😭 I was watching my guy contend for his first win, run top 5 all day, only to have it taken away in the last 2 laps. And the worst part is that NBC hardly acknowledged him and instead hyperfocused on the chase contenders, not even noting that Bowyer was still mathematically eligible.

Its crazy to think back then when NASCAR was able to pack every grandstand at Michigan International Speedway for almost a decade and its surprising of how much the track has fallen to this point, Michigan had grandstands in the infield in 2003 just to tell you how magestic it looked and what could've been for this interesting and gorgeous racetrack.

I live in Michigan and go to a race there every year. This past season had one of the best turnouts in a while. And the great racing this last season there will help bring more ppl back

It is mind blowing considering that Michigan is basically in the middle of nowhere.

I watched this live when I was 6.
Back then, I was upset because I was a huge #24 mark since the previous year. Now, I'm actually quite impressed with Kenseth's determination, as well as his sportsmanship, and it was a good redemption story inside what could have been a pretty good championship season.
Also, Kenseth would wreck Joey Logano at the 2015 Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 (incidentally, a race Jeff Gordon would win) which helps.

Can't wait to see how the gen 6 car will race on this track after a few more years when the surface gets rough again, every track with a worn out surface produces such good racing with multiple grooves

One of the rare times a defending race winner did not get a chance to defend his race title (Jeremy Mayfield, who I would have rather seen in the 38 than David freaking Gilliland)

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 8 лет назад +1

Mayfield's career evaporated after this, following a million DNQ's with Bill Davis Racing in 2007, a partial schedule with Haas in 2008 when they still sucked, and his own team in 2009 before being kicked out of the sport.
Meanwhile, while Gilliland wasn't spectacular (best finish of 2nd in 2008 at Sonoma and 2013 at Talladega), he did remain a full-time Cup driver for 10 seasons afterwards. Plus he never really had good equipment, but he forged himself a fairly decent career.

These cars were SOOO much better than the garbage that followed. Good racing and full grandstands! That was the NASCAR I grew up with.

Jr Had a winning car at 4-5 1.5 mile tracks during 2006. Tony Eury screwed him with TERRIBLE pit strategy repeatedly. I love Eury but every car jr was around and passing ended up right there 1st/2nd. And Jr always had to scrap from terrible track position du to pit strat or bad stops. So frustrating at the time and especially now. 2006 shoulda been even better than it was.

My gawd this was Michigan International Speedway. You could run 3-4 different lines up until 2011. Now it’s a joke
