Many people look at the atrocities committed by their ancestors and feel ashamed of their history. I personally think that context is important, and historic context usually lacks in these arguments. We can't judge the actions of our ancestors with the morals of our present. Doing so will only celebrate the defeated while condemning the victors, which ignores the fact that if the defeated had been victorious they would be the ones commiting these attrocities and the only reason they didn't was because they couldn't. What a good point. I think the best way we can honour our ancestors is to celebrate their successes, and learn from their failures, follow their good deeds, and acknowledge their bad deeds so that you won't make the same mistake.
You're right, but the problem is selective judgment. It's perfectly fine judging your ancestors by context, but then to see the enemy as barbarians betrays what it really is. @@3idraven714 seems like the King - Manuel - was never able to acknowledge talent. Duarte Periera fell out of favor and even Francisco de Almeida was never given much credit - had the elder Almeida made it home, he would have faced a court martial and exile
@@FlashPointHx The reason I asked was all the "other" deeds before his Heroic last stand, because it was heroic. So as you explained, he was about to pay the piper. Sometimes in history, really bad guys, get glory from one event, and bam, they are a National Hero. Thanks for the "espalination".
@@FlashPointHx I noticed another pattern in your excellent Portuguese History (masterpiece ;), Portugal had great leaders, and a lot of them never saw glory, or only saw glory Once, because they weren't "liked" by the King. Was this one of those Court Rivalry situations, that is replete thru History? Can't get yo sh!t together, not a Team? "The Buck stops here" LOL.
@@3idraven714 the higher you went in the aristocracy the more enemies you acquired - Afonso de Albuquerque had the rare trait of being able to establish a lot of support in the royalty - Francisco de Almeida did not - his peers poisoned the mind of King Manuel against him.
@@3idraven714 yeah - when I did my history of the Punic Wars, it was exactly the same. Scipio africanus defeated Hannibal - the greatest threat to Rome up to that point - yet he was brought down by his own government. His headstone read ‘ungrateful country - you shall not possess my bones!’ (He made it a point to be buried outside the boundaries of Rome )
The levels of bravery are medieval. Honor and chivalry still very much ingrained in the warrior ethos. Despite the advancement of weapon systems and naval might, the style of combat preferred was actually brutal hand to hand melee. Indeed the 1400s and 1500s were intriguing because they weren’t relying on numbers but rather firepower yet they had not been accustomed to just ranged warfare but were eager to step into brutal close in combat medieval style.
@@ConstantineJoseph this was a concept that Almeida’s successor, Afonso de Albuquerque, tried to remedy. He knew that the medieval way of fighting - individual honor and bravery - was outdated. He brought the Portuguese fighting system into a new phase
@ it’s intriguing to know that they were like that at the early phase. It seems like centuries of brutal medieval warfare had shaped the entire continent to be like that. Fighting for honor, fighting for credibility and reputation, trying to do their king or commander or father proud. These are values that we don’t see in the last 500 years. I always perceived that the Renaissance period meant the end of chivalry but not in the case of the De Almeida family representing the elan of Portuguese nobility. They are truly loyal knights of the King who did not appreciate them enough by giving them rather inadequate resources for such an ambitious global project.

@@Geraldo_Sem_Pavor hey - so happy you liked my video - yeah I figured we needed to do some time with the battle of Chaul to set up the battle of Diu well

Some good old ancient and medieval military history PLEASE!!
check out my Punic Wars series
Wow, that glory hunting will get you every time. But, gotta say, LoLo held up the Enemy fleet, all his other ships escaped, including the cargo, and 3 new ships. Let me guess, he's a national hero?
They are truly loyal knights of the King who did not appreciate them enough by giving them rather inadequate resources for such an ambitious global project.
amazing stuff man thank you !

Once again great videos, you know the Portuguese colonization reminds me of WWI that it doesn't get that much recognition like the Spanish colonization or like how WWII gets more recognition.
@@jasonpalacios1363 it’s funny how that happens in history - some time periods just hit that tipping point and become the focus

Mate, can you do one day a serie about the Carlist Wars in Spain in XIX century and a Pedro II of Brazil serie? That themes can be very unique for your channel.
I really enjoy and love your content Flash Point History 😊🙏🏻
@@sarenartanis1752 I’d have to research this - I’ve never heard of the latter
@@FlashPointHx About the Carlist Wars, for the spaniards were very important wars because it was the origins of the regionalism and nationalisms they suffer nowadays. Moreover, in that wars participate many good spanish generals like Zumalacaguerri or Espartero, and foreign generals from France and Austria.
Pedro II of Brazil was a very chad king and he participated in many wars, being the most famous the Triple Alliance War against Paraguay.
For the spanish and portuguese communities, that videos will be a hit and instant classics for the channel 😊
