  • "Forged Down Under" is filmed in Queensland, Australia, at the Savage Custom Creative workshop. Savage Custom Creative specializes in knife making and blacksmithing classes. Our goal is to get as many people interested in and participating in our hobby.
"Forged Down Under" was created to showcase the Australian talent we have in the knife making and blacksmithing community and hopefully get more people interested in our hobby! We also aim to make the industry more friendly, as we're all here to help each other.
Each episode is split into two videos - Part 1 & Part 2. Each episode has a theme and is made up of 3 rounds. Contestants receive a challenge that they must start in round 1 and finish in round 2. Each round is judged based on a rubric and the final score from both round 1 & 2 combined, will decide who moves on to round 3, where they will get a new and more advanced challenge. The winner of round 3 will become a "Forged Down Under" champion.
"Forged Down Under" is unique, as we only give the contestants a theme to follow, and the creativity of how they interpret the theme is wholly up to them. This creates a much more fluid and entertaining approach. Sometimes, giving fewer guidelines is better, as contestants have to battle the urge to overcomplicate the build in a time-constrained environment.
Our judging is also different. We judge the contestants on a rubric for Round 1, based on three categories, with a 1-5 points scale per category, per judge. Then, in Round 2, we judge them on a more complex rubric of five categories. This gives the contestants who think about their approach a more strategic path. If you're smart, you can guarantee high points in a couple of categories or maybe aim for an average across all categories.
We hope you enjoy our show, "Forged Down Under"!

Very good for your first episode and look forward to the others.
I would have liked to see more of the finished blades in terms of them having some close ups and the sound was a little soft in the testing area. That's pretty minor though and you'll go from strength to strength over time.

I like the positivity of the judging. It’s a little similar to the American show, but I really like that you guys actually interact with the smiths during the whole process instead of just sitting back and watching. Also, I liked the voice overs explaining the processes like the forging Damascus.

Another great episode and i look forward to seeing another competition. When i gave advice on the first half of this competition i think i suggested letting the viewers get a better look at the completed knife/sword and obviously this was already filmed before any criticism from the public could have been received but it still stands to mention that i and i am sure others would all like to see a close up panning veiw of the completed project. The reason i think its important to show is when the judges are giving criticisms and positive feedback the viewer doesnt have a complete idea of the finished piece so it makes it a little tougher to relate to what the judges might be mentioning. That being said i absolutely love that you folks are tackling this situation and doing your best to give the blacksmithing/bladesmithing community knowledge and entertainment. It has to be incredibly difficult to get so much raw input and whittle it down to an hour long episode. I am one of the dweebs who would sit and watch the entire 20 hours it took to make the sword lol but not everyone probably feels the same way. I really wish all of you guys the best successes and really hope this is just the beginning of something that is able to continue for a long time. THANK YOU!!! All the way from America.

To me Steve Won ... Simon did do a great job.
But i think the judges chose the wrong winner. Some key things in my opinion. Simon made a Oversived Knife, not a "Sword," and two judges said he picked up damage on his blade, and the fit needed work on both. But simons seemed to me to need a little adjustment, and handle seemed overly long. now the materials used in the handle, Simon did choose a better choice in materials, and Steve could've adjusted from a One pice wood grip. Another thing i wouldve liked to steve do, is add Fullers. Steve also didnt Polish his blade near as much as Steve. But yes, both did do a Great Job, and they both made very nice and functional blades in a tight tine constraint.

Such as when the guys are welding pieces together, when the billets are put in the fire, when the guys are using their hammers to flatten the steel and so on.
