    This video had a good idea behind it. The pic of the tower was pretty awesome. That being said when someone says don't take photos just don't. Be respectful, it ain't even about being in Japan or respecting culture. It's about respecting the other person's wishes. This video gets uploaded and what if his employer saw this and he got fired? You wouldn't care. Break the law because the end justifies the means. That's just an excuse and worked for some but not for all.

  • @ryuukusensei

    I'll be honest, watching you blatantly break the rules for the photo was a little nerve racking. As a photographer- I wanted you to get the shot. But also as a foreigner living in Japan, I know that things like that reflect badly on foreigners in general and we tend to get a bad reputation for the actions of a few (Logan Paul, as an extreme example).
    I understand wanting to get the shot, but please try not to do that again. Also, sitting in the middle of the train- definitely do not do that again.
    By the way- even wearing the face mask, I guarantee they would have recognised you.

    • @Lenschunk
      @Lenschunk 5 лет назад +21

      But its not like he is the only person that has taken a photo in kawasaki warehouse. Go on instagram and its pages on pages of these photos. I went with a model once got told off, we are both white. I explain in full japanese these are not for sale we are just taking cool photos and the same guy in this video said ok but dont upload them anywhere. Returned with a co-worker who is Japanese, the same arcade worker is there, I show him my camera ask if photos are okay and he replies I hope you have fun. This like many other things comes down to the general population of japan believing that foreigners cant follow rules and dont understand culture and policies. Have a good old nihonjin with you to vouch and suddenly the world is your oyster.
      I do also wanna point out that this particular Arcade actually only has a sign saying no video. Photos are perfectly fine here. (its required for them to say what is and isnt okay.)

    • @ryuukusensei
      @ryuukusensei 5 лет назад +9

      @@Lenschunk I'm not saying he shouldn't take the photo- I want him to. Like you said, there's the stereotype of foreigners not following the rules and I just don't want him to be careful of that. I know all too well what you mean about doing things as a foreigner, and doing them whilst with a foreign national. I think this case was just a communication issue. My point about not sitting in the middle of the train still stands though.

      I'd like to add that if bad press occurs, even if by accident, as per normal Japanese hierarchical society, management and below all get the whip from the public. It is more than just a matter of "breaking the rules," it is a matter of livelihood for some people and watching this makes me feel like they don't have respect for others. Edit: I'd like to add they could have chosen to do it properly via contacting the property manager and arranging something like how a professional should be.

    As someone who lives in Tokyo, I can tell you the reason why smartphones are okay but cameras arent. If you take a picture on a phone here, there phones have shutter sounds locked to on which always go off very loudly. They are so people know when you are taking a photo. Normal cameras and mirrorless have such quiet shutter sounds its barely possible to hear them. since it is techinically illegal in japan to take pictures of people or businesses without permission they usually will say, you can take it on your phone because then people know. If they dont like it they can ask you to remove it. The other point is that DSLRs are usually used here only for commercial purposes its actually kinda rare to see Japanese people bringing a DSLR to a place like that. (unless they are on instagram obvs) it is really really stupid. In fact that exact worker told me off and tried to tell me not to shoot video or photos in there. But if you say they are for personal use and not going online or being sold they are okay with it.

    • @Lenschunk

    • @user-iw3cu1jq8k
      @user-iw3cu1jq8k 5 лет назад +8

      I'm Japanese but taking pictures of people or businesses isn't technically "illegal" I mean it's just not a proper thing to do in general. The main reason of loud shutter sounds of phones in Japan is to prevent molestation btw.

    • @Lenschunk
      @Lenschunk 5 лет назад +1

      @@user-iw3cu1jq8k I didnt want to go into the details as to why the shutter sound is there, since the idea of old japanese men molesting little girls is not a great topic but hey しょうがない am I right?
      The way it prevents molestation is by the sound being loud alerting others to the fact you are taking a photo. On top of that there is a law the prevents you publishing photos without the sole permission of those photographed. It is not a punishable offence but the person/persons or even company can ask for your photo to be removed and if you are in the street they can go to a koban and report you to the police who will force you to either hand over your SD card or wipe it completely.
      I know this because I am a photographer, I have lived in Tokyo for 5 years.

    • @IanInChengdu

    I don't often watch VLOGs, but while editing, I like to hit the "Photography" category and let it play out on my other monitor. This video seems to get a ton of hate, but I'm actually ok with what you guys did. You spend thousands to go to a foreign country, specifically for photography and see tons of others who have shot in that exact location.... and someone tells you no. Going back and getting the photo did no one harm and ultimately is probably already forgotten by that worker. Get your shot, if it doesn't harm anyone or infringe on their privacy. Taking photos of yourselves in public areas, without showing others, fine by me. Keep it up.

Explain why you want the shot and who you are - all the subs, etc. - and they most likely will be happy to let you shoot. Run and gun works if there's no other way to get it. Nice job.

In this case there's nothing to do with Japanese culture or rules it’s just that that place doesn’t allow taking photos. And its cuz since it became popular on IG as a photo spot, people started to visit there just to take pictures, which is not its original purpose(it’s an amusement arcade).
