Candy was Prince's sax player for a while. She's toured with him too.
Also toured with Van Morrison - his live double CD "A Night in San Francisco" features Dulfur.
"When 👁 need trombone, my dog is handy. But when 👁 need sax, 👁 call Candy...Candy...Candy...." Prince
Yes, she first played with Prince in 1989 and played with him off and on until the end. I used to want to be her. 😊
And played with Pink Floyd at their massive Knebworth Big in 1990
Avdca great addition to prince but prince only surrounds himself with great musicians
Candy Dulfer’s “Pick Up The Pieces” live is incredible!
The live version of this, with Dave Stewart, is great, too!
Definitely 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Or "Sax-A-Go-Go" live.
The 18-minute version (!) from the Leverkusen 2009 concert is insane. And the song "Don't Go" from the same concert has one of the best guitar solos ever.
Please do it Please you would be blown away
Candy Dulfer is one of the best sax players on the planet!!
Absolutely brother!!❤❤
This was such a surprise hit back in the day. It was recorded for a Dutch movie and spent 6 weeks at Number 1 in The Netherlands and they decided to release it worldwide. It reached top 10 in over a dozen countries and peaked at Number 11 in America. According to Candy's dad it was done in one take and was actually just a jam session at the end of recording the soundtrack and wasn't meant to be used or released.
Yes, David Stewart, the mastermind of Eurythmics with this pretty Dutch Sax player Candy Dulfer. And surely one of the coolest instrumental rock songs ever. So groovy and chillin".
Saxuality (1990) is right up Ambers alley
Agreed
So is the follow up from 1993, "Sax A-Go-Go!"
@@alleykeosheyan4779 And Funkyness from her Big Girl album, which I think is her best.
It's time for Art of Noise Moments in Love.
I wish they would listen to that one. 👍🏽
AbsoFRIGGINlutely!!!!
And their collab with Tom Jones on the cover of "Kiss" by Prince!
It would be interesting to see Jay and Amber react to smooth jazz. I would suggest Boney James "Send One Your Love".
Candy is the daughter of a professional Sax player. She asked him to teach her at age 6, and the rest is history. She's a founding member of the European Super group "The Ladies of soul". And her band The Funky Bunch does a cover of "pick up the pieces" that's phenomenal. Oh yeah, she can sing too.
Her duet album with her father (Hans), titled Dulfer Dulfer, is such a fun and funky album. I have seen Candy in concert twice, and met he at a meet and greet 20 years ago. I had such a mad crush on her, and she was so kind and a good listener.
I have been trying to see Candy Dulfer and Ladies of Soul for about 4 years. I had tickets, but the shows were cancelled during Covid. Then I got tickets for the 2023 show, which then got cancelled due to one of the other group members, Glennis Grace, being convicted of an assault charge. Finally, another Ladies of Soul event is planned for April 2025. Candy's sax playing is phenomenal, no disrespect to her regarding her singing ability which is adequate - but that's what the other group members do best - she's there for the sax!
She had her own band Funky Stuff when she was 13. I saw her at the time and she was amazing even at that age!
Candy is a real talent and still performing you should go down the rabbit hole for Candy there is a lot of her on the Tube here she ROCKS
Candy's entire album Saxuality is AMAZING! I only had to listen to it once to add the WHOLE THING to my phone! On the album, some songs include vocals, some don't. Some are uptempo, others are slow... It is PERFECT! My mom and I listen to this kind of music all the time while we play board games, and Candy is a regular on our station!
Back in the day, I. Bought the cassette and later the cd❤😊
Her next album "Sax-A-Go-Go" rocked too!
Candy Dulfer is the real deal on the alto saxophone. (back in the day we'd say she's the real deal Holyfield : ) )
As a sax player myself, if you love this type of urban jazz, there is a wide and vast world there for you to discover. David Sanborn, Gerald Albright, Michael Brecker, Boney James, Everette Harp, Dave Koz and many more.
Agreed, and there are so many: Richard Elliot, Eric Darius, Euge Groove to name a few. I love Mindi Abair, too. I would love for them to listen to her or Eric.
Jay Beckenstein with Spyro Gyro pretty darn good too!
Tune in to almost any "Smooth Jazz" station, and you'll find Cindy and the others you mentioned. I hope that Rob & Amber delve into the genre a little deeper.
Right on man 🔥 I love these players mentioned 💯
Grover Washington Jr.
Candy is 54 years old now, still beautiful, and still smokin' that sax. She's a great talent. Candy was 19 years old when this song became a huge hit. She's played with Van Morison, Pink Floyd, Madonna, Prince, AlanParsons, and Tower Of Power.
Candy Dulfer's saxophone with Glennis Grace singing Whitney's 'I will always love you' is a must watch ❤
Dolly's
@FunkyMarcel don't worry, I know it's Dolly's song, but Glennis Grace is specifically doing Whitney's version.
I'm SOOOO glad you were able to hear this great one!!! I've suggested several times in hopes it would make it to you list, partly for your love of horns. Many thanks and glad you enjoyed. Her albums are great!!! Have a wonderful rest of week.
So glad you've finally discovered this masterpiece, so Candy is a very successful artist in her own right, but she all known for her guest appearance with Prince and Pink Floyd. Daves solo work is equally incredible playing that blues guitar with some amazing recordings, nice work guys
Candy plays with Van Morrison on occasion.
Proof there is still some awesome music in the world.
There is loads of great music in 2024. I am listening to it. Most of the bands aren't famous but they are brilliant 🙂
This song is 35 years old, though.
@@davidhuggan6315where? today's music is awful
Did anyone already tell Candy Dulfer is Dutch? 🙂 This piece is part of the movie score of the Dutch movie "De Kassiere"
❤❤❤
Very good selection. I'd suggest "The Dream" by David Sanborn-a reently deceased saxophone legend. 🎷
Yes, and his uptempo hit, Bang Bang.
Beautiful. This gives me the same vibes as "You Belong To The City" by Glenn Frey.
Candy Dulfer is one of the creators of the "Ladies of Soul" supergroup. They have a RUclips channel. It features full concerts.
Whoa!! Niiice…Candy Dulfer’s been playing since age 6. Props to the person who suggested this jazz tune. She sings too btw…
Candi played with Pink Floyd at Knebworth
I was there in the rain but loving it.
Jay, I suggested this song months ago when you said you liked the sax. Now you know why. Released in 1989 as part of the soundtrack of a Dutch movie, they did it in one take at the end of a long day of recording. Candy is awesome.
She couldn't hit a bad note if she tried.. she's amazing!
In 1988 Prince invited her to solo on one of his concerts, later she played with him on multiple occasions, including the entire Musicology tour (2004): a super jazzy and funk album with the LEGEND Maceo Parker on brass section and one of Prince's best live bands, simply astounding. She added her saxophone to the music of many artists: Alan Parsons, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd...
When Prince played the medley The Question Of U/The One/Fallin‘, Candy sang part of the lyrics of the latter (’Fallin' by Alicia Keys).
Prince said, "When I want sax, I call Candy"! 😎✌🏼
That’s funny!
I just had to reply! 🔥😂🤣🔥
**Prince in a studio with his back to the door. The door opens and Candy Dulfer is silhouetted in the entrance way** "I'm Candy." ... "Of course you are."
@@CindyYr11 He says it in the extended video of 'Partyman' 🙂
Nope, he said: "... but when I want sax, I call Candy Candy!" 😁😉
@@hyperfex Okay, but then you have to say: Candy, Candy, Candy, Candy, Candy, Candy! 🤪😁✌🏼
Couldn't wait to click on this one! I knew it would be right up your alley!! ♥️
Ladies of Soul is a Dutch group of individual singers that come together a few times a year to give concerts, and 1 of them is Candy Dulfer. They are really worth a reaction. I'm sure you guys will like them ❤
Jay and Amber, welcome to the wonderful world of what's known as smooth jazz. It's a deep rabbit hole. Enjoy!
she's an amazing artist and knowing Amber loves saxophone, I knew she'd love this song so much. I think I recommended her for future Female Fridays in the past. So glad you now got introduced to her. There are many live performances of Ms. Dulfer on YT so you can have your pick and enjoy!
It's one of the best instrumental dialogue songs: Stewart's guitar speaks and... Dulfer's sax answers. I LOVE IT!
GREAT REACTION, GUYS!
Thanks guys one of my favorite favorite songs. I can’t believe y’all did it. Yay.!!!
Yay!!!!! I've been recommending Candy Dulfer for a year now...I knew you'd love her. She has a great catalog of music 🎶
What a heartwarming reaction of you two! Makes me re-experience the brilliance of this track. I will never forget, back in the day when this became nr. 1, her father jazz-saxophone player Hans Dulfer on the phone with Dutch radio dj Frits Spits. He was totally overjoyed and so proud of his young daughter... and blown away that this could be a nr. 1 hit! Because he knew how it was made. Nothing written, just improvisation and jamming along. Like father like daughter! 🙂
Dang, Rob and Amber, you're ON FIRE today! First Average White Band, now this! This is one of the best music reaction channels, I swear!
Beautiful & Soulful... Have heard this one before, but been a Long While! Love It! Great Choice, You Guys! :)
Welcome to one of my....
*ALL-TIME TOP 5 FAVORITE SONGS!*
*"Lily Was Here"* is one of those songs that I put on repeat at night when going to sleep! It's a timeless musical piece. I get chills everytime I here it! 😉👍❤
PS: Dave Stewart *"NEVER LOOKED MORE DELICIOUSLY HOTTER!"* MEOW 🐈
Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox were The Eurythmics. Both Dave and Annie are big time song writers. He has written for Tom Petty, Ringo Star, Stevie Nicks, and Mick Jagger. Nice reaction!! 😊
And he's another one from the north-east of England.
Candy Dulfer (born 19 September 1969) is a Dutch jazz and pop saxophonist. She is the daughter of jazz saxophonist Hans Dulfer. She began
playing at age six and founded her band Funky Stuff when she was fourteen…in 1987her band was the opening act for two of Madonna's European concerts. In 1988, Prince invited Dulfer on stage to play an improvised solo during one of his European shows…1989 Dulfer appeared in Prince's "Partyman" video…
Thats my birthday!!
Anything by Candy Dulfer is great, she is a fantastic sax player.
It was a huge hit in the Uk and across Europe .
It's a shame it doesn't get as much airplay these days , but glad you guys are reacting to it
David A is so under rated as a guitar player. The drum rhythm just gets your foot tapping or head bobbing!! If you really think, Baker Street was the start of sax on modern songs, sung or instrumental.
I've seen Candy Dulfer 4 times in Switzerland. And her fahter - Hans Dulfer - twice (he is also a jazz saxophonist)
I've seen Candy Dulfer perform live a number of times! She's one of the best! Good choice.
I first learned about Candy Dulfer from Prince way back when. She is an excellent saxophonist.
Great music. Candy is a fantastic saxophone player from Holland. She also played with Prince.
Greetings from the Netherlands
🎶🎶🎶🎷🎷😍🙋♀️
Great that you've reacted to this little gem. You should check out Annie and Dave's earlier incarnation, 'The Tourists' too. They had a couple of hits before they formed Eurythmics.
Candy Dulfer called an album "Saxuality" (still have it), Dave Stewart had a video with a B&W cow in a boardroom. Of course this collaboration is amazing!! Pure talent and complete respect for the other musicians. It is a great combination. Should be in a smoky lounge at the far end of a dark alley, on a foggy night in a foreign city, meeting strangers who'll be friends forevermore... and then "that" woman walks in...
Oh wow I haven't heard this in so long! Absolutely one of the greatest instrumentals ever!
Loved watching you both eyes closed and head down just FEELING the emotion of this classic.
Candy Dulfer’s “Pick Up The Pieces” live is insane!
Man, I had such a crush on Candy Dulfer in the mid 90s... One of the best concerts I ever went to was Candy Dulfer in Glasgow in '96 (or was it late '95). After thirty years it's hard to remember!
According to Candy's father, Hans Dulfer, on Dutch radio, the recording was done in just one take, actually a jam session, and at that time it was not meant to be released. This jam session was done at the end of a day of recording for the movie De Kassière, and Dave Stewart later decided to release this as a single…
“Lets Just Say Goodbye “”by David Sanborn rest his soul. Sax legend!
Legend has that this was a jam session at the end of a day of recording for a movie soundtrack...edited down to be the biggest instrumental hit of all time
This is terrific. As a boring side note, I just bought this CD from a used book store a couple weeks ago.
Glad to hear this.
This is from the soundtrack to a Dutch movie "Lily was here". There are clips from the movie in this video.
Candy is Dutch, and has released quite a few albums in the 90's.
Her father Hans Dulfer was a major jazz musician. And Candy ... what a talent! She is Dutch! The song/tune I believe was a score or theme for a movie.
Finally! I think I first suggested this for you after seeing Amber swoon while listening to “Baker Street”. I knew she would love this song and get the Amber sway going! She didn’t disappoint lol. You may also like “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” by Traffic. It also has a prominent sax role but very bluesy jazz. It’s a great dark room with headphones on kinda song!
Now if I can just get Jay to listen to “Telegraph Road” by Dire Straits I can die happy. Jay, seriously, you will love this song. It’s everything you like plus piano!
I've heard this before, but had no clue who did it. Now I know, so I can listen to it again and again. So smooth.
Love this song, you hear the title in the opening notes both from guitar and sax. For more instrumentals check out anything by The Shadows. Generally well known songs played as instrumentals.
A duet that mighty be worth checking out is the late popular recording artists, singers, songwriters and pianist Billy Preston with the lovely Syreeta Wright with their huge smash hit single"With You I'm Born Again" released back in 1979. Syreeta's voice is not only beautiful but soothing to the soul.
Pure fire 🔥
I've red Candy's autobiography. She said it's a one take recording and she just improvised. The arrangement of the instruments as you can hear on the final record were not yet there during the recording. After the session Dave said it would be a hit. Candy thought: 'What is he talking about? This a hit?'. This was all done to be the soundtrack of the Dutch movie 'De Kassière' (The Cashier) by Ben Verbong (1989).
Didn't know anyone else knew this song I love this song.
Welcome to the world of smooth jazz/jazz fusion.
I used to love to play this back in those days just riding around the city late at night , just me, my car, the city lights and the music !
From the thumbnail, I thought you were doing the live version. It blows the studio version out of the water. Candy's live performances are always amazing.
All these years, I never knew the name of this song. I've heard it many many times, too. Lol
Deep Purple CHILD IN TIME Live 1970!!!
Candy is alive and well. She’s from Amsterdam in the Netherlands and is still only 54 years old. So she was 19 when she recorded this record 😮
The best duet without lyrics :)
Finally :-) Sugested this several times. One of my all time favorites
Obviously she's a fine saxophonist. Not knowing much about playing the sax I couldn't tell you just how good she is, but the combination of her playing and her beauty is killer. He album with this song is pretty great.
I am very excited you finally hit this song up... it's been one of my favorites from the git go!
Funny you should have this right after an Average White Band track. Candy does a great cover of Pick Up The Pieces.
I've suggested Candy many times, along with many other great jazz musicians. Why can't you guys believe us from the start when those of us suggest listening to smooth, contemporary jazz? We know what we're talking about! 😄
Boney James is my favorite saxophonist in smooth jazz. He has mostly instrumentals, but also features some great singers.
He's touring right now, was an hour away, but I wasn't able to go because I would have had to buy a "day of" ticket, and the price had really gone up.
Boney James (as suggested dozens of times) -
"Butter"
"Ride"
"Sarah Smile" (Hall & Oates' song)
"Hold On Tight"
"So Beautiful"
"Something Inside"
"It's All Good"
----
Piano jazz.... Brian Culbertson is amazing.
Love this tune always makes you feel great. As someone who loves sax players like Junior Walker and Kenny G, this tune came along as something extra special ❤❤❤❤❤
CANDY played alot with Prince. He had her as part of his band on his musicology tour and she always had fun solos. She also did stuff with Sheila E. She is from Holland
Candy Dulfer also worked with Prince and has released over a dozen solo releases. She is an excellent saxophonist.
Love this one. It is new to me. Somehow I missed it when it came out. Great combination of talent. Great mood music
.I will have to check out more.
one of the best imstrumental,,,,Candy can play also hot,,,,
Thank you for doing this. I’ve never heard of them before and they are fabulous.
I forgot all about this song...LOVED it when it came out. Adding it to my playlist now lol...
I have this on vinyl and is this not the sexiest song you have ever heard and Candy can sure blow that sax and make it sing masterminded by the legendary Dave Stewart brilliant
Not instrumental, but also heavenly made music OTT - The Queen Of All Everything
This is great, and she has a lot of great music out there.
I’ve waited a long time for this. I smashed “like” before watching it.
Candy is Dutch im proud im from the netherlands to
🎵🎵🤩 Beautiful Song 🎷🫶🏼🫶🏼😉👍🏽
So glad you've discovered Candy Dulfer, 😄 even though I doubt you'll ever get to it, but I highly recommend "Finsbury park cafe 67" Original radio edit, now that is some cigar music for Jay and some cool sax for Amber. Thank you Peace! 🙏
these two are soooooooo good, dulfer is a boss.
Dutch pride and joy on the sax,..she is AMAZING❤
Never forget that the drums are holding the whole tune together.
Candy is funky. Amber your intuition fine tuned and your way with words too.
Their live version is even better🎷🎸
You might like a band named 'Quarterflash', and their track "Find Another Fool". The female lead vocalist is also a sax player named Randi Ross...
My girl Candy! Loved listening to her back in the day! Great reaction❤😊
Her "So Cool" instrumental is one of my favorite.
