Yes, I remember catching the video shown here on MTV in, I think, 1990. Very atmospheric track, nostalgic and a bit foreboding - it was the main theme of a Dutch film by the same name, and a big hit across Europe of course. The video really enhances the sense of intimacy and brooding sensuality, with the three women - Lily in the images from the film, Dulfer playing sax and the nameless woman who enters the club and is looking at the band with a knowing smile. :)

This was such a surprise hit back in the day. It was recorded for a Dutch movie and spent 6 weeks at Number 1 in The Netherlands and they decided to release it worldwide. It reached top 10 in over a dozen countries and peaked at Number 11 in America. According to Candy's dad it was done in one take and was actually just a jam session at the end of recording the soundtrack and wasn't meant to be used or released.

Candy is the daughter of a professional Sax player. She asked him to teach her at age 6, and the rest is history. She's a founding member of the European Super group "The Ladies of soul". And her band The Funky Bunch does a cover of "pick up the pieces" that's phenomenal. Oh yeah, she can sing too.

Her duet album with her father (Hans), titled Dulfer Dulfer, is such a fun and funky album. I have seen Candy in concert twice, and met he at a meet and greet 20 years ago. I had such a mad crush on her, and she was so kind and a good listener.

I have been trying to see Candy Dulfer and Ladies of Soul for about 4 years. I had tickets, but the shows were cancelled during Covid. Then I got tickets for the 2023 show, which then got cancelled due to one of the other group members, Glennis Grace, being convicted of an assault charge. Finally, another Ladies of Soul event is planned for April 2025. Candy's sax playing is phenomenal, no disrespect to her regarding her singing ability which is adequate - but that's what the other group members do best - she's there for the sax!

Stewart and Dulfer can also be heard on the magnificent long version of "Deep in Vogue" by Malcolm McLaren, recorded around the same time as this one. Stewart was involved with the album and I'm 99% sure it's him playing guitar on the track, and all but certain that Diulfer played the languid, jazzy saxophone solo towards the end of the instrumental section in the middle. Both of them with a tone and phrasing that completely match "Lily was Here".

What a heartwarming reaction of you two! Makes me re-experience the brilliance of this track. I will never forget, back in the day when this became nr. 1, her father jazz-saxophone player Hans Dulfer on the phone with Dutch radio dj Frits Spits. He was totally overjoyed and so proud of his young daughter... and blown away that this could be a nr. 1 hit! Because he knew how it was made. Nothing written, just improvisation and jamming along. Like father like daughter! 🙂

In 1988 Prince invited her to solo on one of his concerts, later she played with him on multiple occasions, including the entire Musicology tour (2004): a super jazzy and funk album with the LEGEND Maceo Parker on brass section and one of Prince's best live bands, simply astounding. She added her saxophone to the music of many artists: Alan Parsons, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd...
When Prince played the medley The Question Of U/The One/Fallin‘, Candy sang part of the lyrics of the latter (’Fallin' by Alicia Keys).

She didn’t disappoint lol. You may also like “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” by Traffic. It also has a prominent sax role but very bluesy jazz. It’s a great dark room with headphones on kinda song!
Now if I can just get Jay to listen to “Telegraph Road” by Dire Straits I can die happy. Jay, seriously, you will love this song. It’s everything you like plus piano!

Just to clarify for those who don't know, call and response is when one musician or singer does a riff or a call and another musician answers with a response.

CANDY played alot with Prince. He had her as part of his band on his musicology tour and she always had fun solos. She also did stuff with Sheila E. She is from Holland

Candy Dulfer also worked with Prince and has released over a dozen solo releases. She is an excellent saxophonist.

I thought everyone but me had forgotten about this song! I still put it on playlists all the time. It is the best song ever if you need to put yourself in a chill mood. I don't smoke or drink, but it makes me feel like I need a cigar and a single malt scotch.

Now you all know I'm going to attach this song to a memory like I do whenever I comment! Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit in the 80s and 90s, I can't remember which station it was, but in the mid 90s when this came out whenever they were switching over to their "night time" programming which was usually the more sultry and sexier music, they used to play this song was the intro to that couple hour block of music.

The station was called Smooth Jazzz.

Oh man. Candy Dulfer, Dave Koz, The Rippingtons; David Sanborn, Slim Man and othersthat I got into in the early 90's. Contemporary Jazz like this has been a big part of my music for the last 30 years.
First rime I heard this they were on David Letterman in the early 90's. Such a great collaboration.

I recommend this to you both about 18 months ago, when the track come it's actually Candy Dulfer with David Stewart it's her name first as dave Stewart is the guest the guitarist the live version just blows you away, when this come out around 88 89 time it just come out of the left field there was nothing like it at the time, I knew Amanda would love this, the sax is just so haunting on this once you hear once you're never forget it but it's a track very few people know of unless they were around at the time

Dave Stewart wrote and produced this track, so I doubt he was a guest on his own song. He wrote or co/wrote all the music for the soundtrack "Lily Was Here".

Man, I had such a crush on Candy Dulfer in the mid 90s... One of the best concerts I ever went to was Candy Dulfer in Glasgow in '96 (or was it late '95). After thirty years it's hard to remember!
