    Hi, that is very interesting. I just bought a new All-You-Need (8 inch), and I can see that you use different disks than the ones that come with it. What are the ones that have no hole in the center? How is that called? so we can use them instead of the ones that come with the All-You-need... That would allow for bigger rocks to fit on it since nothing is in the center.. If I know the name of these, I could look them up. Thanks in advance. I am a beginner, so I find this video reallly useful.

    Hi Dave, you mentioned someone who uses hard wheels I think you said that cost only $5 compared to others that cost $30 or more. I couldn’t understand which flat lap wheels your were talking about. Can you please explain? Thank you

    Nice video, thanks for taking the time and sharing! Question for ya, where are you buying your disks that cheap? I get my hard ones from Amazon and they about $18-30 each. The soft ones I have to make because I can't find any for sale anywhere. Let me know, checkin' out some of your other videos, subscribed!

      Rough Market hey there brother I love your videos as well and I hope you don't mind if I send people your way on how to make sponge pads for flat laps, I buy my discs that cheap from eBay also from a company called jewels and tools, Hi-Tech lapidary and Johnson Brothers lapidary both make sponge pads for 6-8 inch discs under 8$ I think although I am way into making my own nowadays I have been using yoga mats

    Do you ever still use your flat lap for cabs or do you exclusively use your cabbing wheels?

    • @lapidarydave
      @lapidarydave  6 месяцев назад

      I use the wheels just because it’s a little bit faster but there’s nothing wrong with using a flat lap. My friend adam who is a full-time Opal cutter uses his flat lap most of the time.

      @@lapidarydave My late dad got a couple rock saws and a flat lap that also had a vice and could be used as a small horizonal saw. He never got to use them, so I brought them back with me at Christmas and was looking for polishing/slabbing/cabbing videos as a way of trying to educate myself a little. He was mainly a collector of agates.

    Now I am concerned. I bought the hi-tech a few months ago and was disappointed. It seemed underpowered. When I pressed a stone on the lap, it lost RPM with what seems to me to be not much pressure. In fact it comes to a complete stop. When I remove, it goes back up to highest RPM. It looks like you are able to grind with pressure. Can you give me some insights and whether you get RPM drop. Kind of hard to tell how much pressure you are applying from the video.

      @lapidarydave  3 года назад

      In my opinion my friend it definitely seems like they were something wrong with your machine I would call and ask for a replacement if I was you I have never been able to slow the RPMs by applying pressure to my machine I’ve had a few new high-tech flats and even a few old ones and none of them had the same problem as yours please let them know that lapidary Dave sent you they’re good friends of mine and let them know you would like a exchange

    like the video--I'm trying to polish quartz on a similar machine, mainly using diamond wheels, and I keep getting little bevels and scratches--got any advice? Should I be using pads instead of hard wheels?

    • @lapidarydave
      @lapidarydave  6 лет назад

      7 scientist in my first flat lap video I post a link of a gentleman from Taos New Mexico who is fantastic at carving gemstones on a flat lap using only hard flat lap Wheels in the video I carve a piece of Green Serpentine you should check it out it's my first flat laughing video, I do suggest sponge pads for getting rid of facets that might be left on your stone when you finish polishing but if you're left with scratches then you are missing something or not removing the scratches before you go on to the next Grit I often suggest for folks who are just starting out to get a 360 Grit hard will before they jumped to a 220 soft it really makes things easy for folks were missing scratches

    Good videos! I'm considering to buy an ALL-U-NEED. Just two questions I want to ask about it. I see you have't used the water dripping system. Did you find any problems with it? How about the noise level of it as compared with other grinding machines?

    • @lapidarydave
      @lapidarydave  5 лет назад +1

      Michelle Lam howdy there my friend :) I don’t use the watering system because it doesn’t hold enough water and it can get eaten up by the hard wheels the watering system isn’t terrible but I haven’t used it in years I don’t even know where it is and I don’t miss it at all
      I’d say these machines are only a bit quieter or just as loud as other machines

    Hey Dave!
    Love your videos man. Have you tried the slant cabber or heard anything on it? Any pros and cons between the "All You Need" and "Slant Cabber"? What do you think of a flat lap vs wheels?
    I look forward to your reply.
    Kind Regards from Australia!

      Howdy there, in my opinion I would say wheels over a flat lap set up if its your first machine however a good lapidary needs both
      One can attach sponges pads to their master laps on flats to cab like wheels where wheels cant make things flat at all( I cut up old yoga mats to glue to master laps to use as sponge back lapping pads to cab) if you go with a flat lap make sure to buy a few extra master laps that you can permanently adhere the sponge pads to the backs of you grits to be able to cab with them
      Also flats can use wet and dry sand paper if one is in a pinch where wheels have to use manufactured
      I have both heard and used a few different slant cabbers :) I prefer standard verticke flat lap because there is nothing a vertical lapmvant do that a slant can if anything there are a few things that a vertical lap can do that a slant cant for instance when it comes to hi-tech brand laps one can modify the splash guard of their machine and take off the hood of their vertical lap and use larger sized laps ( use a 8" on a 6" machine or a 10 on a 8" ) where one cant do that with a slant lap because the housing and splash guard are connected to each other
      Also one can use 2.5 gallon drinking water containers with the pull tabs to use as a modified watering supply which is very handy compared to the tiny watering cup supplies that come with lapping machines that have to be refilled frequently
      I hope this helps my friend, make sure to Subscribe and feel free to ask me anytime

      @@lapidarydave Thanks for the prompt reply Dave! I appreciate it as I'm about to make a purchase soon.
      Just to clear things up for me, when you say you prefer a vertical lap...vertical meaning/being the "all u need" model or is a vertical lap different?
      I guess vertical and horizontal are a perspective thing and just want to be sure.
      Thanks again!

      It would seem there would be more range of motion using a horizontal lap vs. the slant. Would you say this is true?
