Lapidary Time!! Trimming and Flat Lapping with a Tile saw !!!

  • In this quick video I show how use a trim saw blade on a tile saw and also show how I fashion a flat lap disc to a tile saw
    I mention a bit but not nearly enough about how DANGEROUS it is to attach wheels and discs to machines that where not made for them especially when they are spinning faster then they where made to spin
    Tile saw blades can cost 25-50$ where trim saw blades cost 4-10$ also in my opinion trim saw blades work better for cutting gemstones especially ones that are smaller or more fragile

    Dave... thanks so much for the great info [& disclaimer ;)]. I got my #80 6" flat lap disc last Friday and I've been using it all weekend. I got lucky because I didn't have to chop up my tile saw -- everything that needed to move was loosened with a screwdriver. I even got lucky with the reservoir because it makes a perfect 3/4 splash guard so I can stay dry -- and I have full access to the disc for grinding and water drip. I did have to order an odd size lap disc with a 5/8" arbor -- I got it from China for $18.66 including shipping, and it took about a week to arrive. It seems they have a decent assortment of 5/8" discs. I also got an arbor adaptor that reduces it to 1/2" so I can buy the common size. I've been trying to adapt something into a flat lap and your video was exactly what I needed -- Thanks, BIG TIME!

    Hey Dave... I want to convert my tile saw -- but I don't know anything about flat laps. I want to start out by buying a 50-80# disc -- but I'm confused about what is needed. I have a 7" Skil brand wet tile saw -- so I assume I should probably get a 6" lap disk. I really need to know if I can just buy a disc & mount it on the arbor -- or do I need some kind of backing plate? When looking online (jewelsntools) I saw things called "Master Lap" that were cheaper than a diamond disc "Lap Top". I would greatly appreciate any advice you may have -- Thanks, George

    • @lapidarydave
      @lapidarydave  6 лет назад

      geeder definitely you're going to want to buy a 6 inch flat lap just for your 7 inch tile saw, I do not use a Master lap when I use the flat discs on the tile saw, I will be making another video shortly describing the modification just a little bit better I've been having people hitting me up lately telling me that they're confused when I explain how to attach the lapidary Flats

    • @geeder9086
      @geeder9086 6 лет назад

      Thanks... that helps a lot! It looks like I need an arbor adaptor b/c the lap discs are mostly 1/2" & the tile saw uses 5/8" -- that seems almost universal.

      Skin Shrimp Hello there your gonna want to get The largest will you cannot fit on your machine if it’s an 8 inch machine you’re gonna wanna get an 8 inch wheel most people use a 80 grit and a 220 grit hardware then you’re gonna want to get 80 220 400 600 & 1000Great silicon carbide belts to polish on an expandable drum company such as Johnson brothers also sells expandable diamond belts if you want to use diamond on your expandable drum it cost a little bit more but always has better results in my experience I hope this helped feel free to message me anytime with any of your questions it’s my pleasure to answer

    • @lapidarydave
      @lapidarydave  4 года назад

      Skin Shrimp So you definitely want to get 80 grit in 220 grit hard diamond wheels which are the nickel plated wheels
      You’re gonna want to get 80 grit 220 grit 400 grit 600 grit 1000 grit and 12,000 grit or higher if you can find it by what you can from Johnson brothers if you can’t find 601,000 I would suggest buying them on eBay or somewhere else 600 grit and 1000 grit or a essential grit for sure
      I believe the a50 Machine is a 8 inch machine so you would probably want to get a 8 inch expandable drum
      A 6 inch drum will work on a 8 inch machine but a 8 inch wheel will not work on a 6 inch machine so triple check that your machine takes 8 inch wheels
