Surrogate Vulture and Misbegotten are my favourite bosses for the entire game. Surrogate Vulture's OST, sound effects and presentation were just on point and left a pretty big impression on me. I'd argue that it's one of the best tracks of the game.
I think Dreamborn Terror is the best fight in the game in the sense it makes you use every single mechanic you know of while providing a giant spectacle for the eyes, and it says a lot when the game's hardest superboss is the best one. It's the classic souls Guy With Weapon fight. My favorite however has to be Surrogate Vulture. Not mechanically, but more the atmosphere around it. The way it moves, the sounds it makes and the absolutely heavenly track by Roe on the background. It felt alien from everything else, almost angelic in nature with the way it hovers and places it's wings together in a praying motion during the second phase. These two fights were really the ones that left me almost breathless at the end of it for different reasons.
15:20 I managed to figure out another absorbable attack during the attack where he slams the crystal down and has light pillars coming to the sides, towards the end of the attack he swings his arms outwards and those can be absorbed, kinda niche mechanic since that attack is pretty understated but it's useful and it's fun learning little things like that to help with the bosses
I actually bought grime randomly while it was on sale after the release of colors of rot. I actually was excited to play the game because of the art direction. Then I started playing and it absolutely surpassed my expectations. My only issue was the amount of bosses that have a 2nd phase in death since it just wasn’t surprising at all after some point. Still love the eye giant and surrogate vulture though.
Nice vid, sad that you couldn't fight the dreamborn terror though, seems to be a pretty common bug that hopefully gets fixed. Also Shidra was always the final boss after the final performance, colours of rot only added flowerheart, giant of eyes and surrogate vulture.
Great video, Jack! I'd never even heard of this game until now, but it looks awesome! I always appreciate a great indie Metroidvania, especially when it has a fun boss roster! Anyway, I'm enjoying your content as always and look forward to your future uploads!
The fun thing about these sidescrollers is that their innate limitations lead to a much cleaner implementation than their obvious inspirations. A third person perspective simply does not allow for the degree of situational awareness you get from a 2d playing field with a boss designed entirely around the size of the screenspace. Especially in Elden Ring this problem is strikingly obvious (even though all the Souls games suffer from it); bosses that do not fit the screen or pull your camera away so rapidly it leaves your head spinning. GRIME has quite a few problems in my eyes, but the boss design is overall fantastic.
This game looks tuff asl ngl, I love the art style and having recently completed Blasphemous I am now making a venture into the Metroidvania genre. Really dope that you got to cover this while Alex got to cover Doomblade, and I'm looking forward to seeing the both of you cover Blasphemous 2. I like when games do more than just tweak the numbers on everything, it's why I love Dark Souls 2 NG+ the most out of the other Souls games. Hopefully you're able to fight The Dreamborn Terror at some point. Either way, the devs couldn't have picked a better channel to represent this game, and the honesty that you displayed upfront about re-editing the video just goes to show how much of a perfectionist y'all are
Misbegotten somehow became my favourite boss of all time. Period. I don't know it managed it, but it stole my heart and punched me in the face with it and I'm here for it~
Holy scheisse this game looks EPIC. The gameplay may be good, but tbh the presentation looks absolutely beautiful and breathtaking, imo more impressive than some top tier AAA games. If this game goes on sale I’ll have to pick it up
hey everyone, Jack here. Wanted to quickly clarify a few things. 1. What I meant by that I'm "unhappy with the script," in specific with the New Game + segment I got multiple things wrong, namely Shapely Fidus and forgot to add Final Performance. Long story short, Final Performance is alright on NG+, there's two ballerinas instead of one. Also disregard the fact that I wasn't repelling the ballerina in either bit 2. Dreamborn Terror is likely bugged for me and I have no way of accessing the fight to my knowledge. TWICE I've completely, 100% searched New Game + and beaten every boss, talked to every Thought and fully explored the Childbed. For some reason, I get stuck with that dialogue shown in the video when talking to the ball in the center and it just doesn't unlock for me. The fight looks incredible, but I have genuinely no idea how to unlock it, I've asked around the GRIME Subreddit and got great answers, but none worked. (Thanks for the help though!) Thank you for watching, and thank you to Akupara Games and Clover Bite! Get GRIME! for real this game is phenomenal
You said that flowerheart doesn't exist in ng+? But you need to kill the 3 colors of rot bosses to be able to access dreamborn terror. That includes flowerheart. So either flowerheart straight up isn't there for you and is definitely bugged, or you didn't kill flowerheart in ng+
There's a bug in NG+, it happens sometimes where Shidra can't kill you. I've experienced it on NG+3 I trhink and NG+4 or 5, I can't remember.Your health goes down to 0 and you are still tanking everything with 0 health. There are also more bugs in the game, some are explitable, some are a pain in the ass. Shidra is an easy boss anyway, even without the bug, he is just boring.
@@SpaljeniLikI learned about this today, apparently if you kill the secret boss, you become invincible until you reload your save. Nothing to do with Shidra
Grieving rockgiant was THE hardest boss on my first playthrough. I died to him 15+. And to be honest, it wasn't that bad. Now I would say it is a good fight. About minibosses having a unabsorable half of hp: actually, during my resonance parry/dash only run, I realised that repel damage is very strong against the second half of hp. It felt like I was using the spiked shield from Dead Cells. For ng+ I would say that the ng+exlusive boss is certainly my favorite. Also, I would say that Final performance went down in ng+. Huge AOEs with insanely high damage made fight a bit less enjoyable to me, but it is 2 dancers that just killed all the enjoyment of it. And the fact that the Performer bodyblocks and pushes you around is annoying, especially when there are dancers on both sides. I would say that the readabillity of the attacks of TFP is one of the worst I've ever seen. To me, it's the worst mechanical fight in the game. For the ranking, I would say that 6 minibosses+flowerheart are at the bottom(with TFP below them) and the Desert Watcher at the top of them. Amalgams are great, WM are hard but fun, both vultures are really cool(except the electical attack of the surrogate one). Ng+ Shidra is still a bit better than original. I haven't noticed any changes in Giant of eyes boss fight, but it's still a spectacular and fun. The magma-on-the-parry attack is the only downgrade of Shapely Fidus. So, to me ng+ is better. The only thing I wish is ng+exclusive boss to be added to prey rematch.
A Metroidvania souls like I find interesting is Lost Epic. Mainly because it actually has a bright and colorful color palette instead of everything being dead. Also fishing.
What do you mean the final performance is the original finale to GRIME? I see a guy fighting Shidra in 2021 (and colors of rot, the first dlc, came out in dec 2022): ruclips.net/video/bJpGcg6owEg/видео.html
Good video, I'd like to give a shot to the souls games, by which one should I start ? Also this game looks really good, I'm just going to wait for it to be released on others consoles, because I'm terrible at playing games on PC.
so personally i think your first one should be either dark souls 2 or 3. 3 is the easiest but also helps a lot with combat because it’s so fast, 2 is more fun and is my favorite in the series, so either do dark souls 2 or 3! thanks for asking! - jack
I just recently 100% this game and dlc & i swear i didn't do anything special to fight the dreamborn terror. I didn't talk to any of the thoughts...i might have talked to one. I didn't talk to goldhead at all. I just pressed L2 on the child and was surprisingly teleported to the fight.
IDK about your list or what your ideas are about the worst and best. I'm at NG+6. Let's say the hardest bosses for me are still the bunch of Amalgams, including Shindra (altho he is sometimes bugged and he can't kill you) . I'd say beyond that, the Surrogate Vulture is an endurance fight, and the Mothers.. I still hate The Final Performance, but I figured him out. That's about it. The Child is the easiest boss in the game. Just avoid the background attacks. Once you learn the patterns it's all the sam from NG+ to NG+6.
it’s a ranking from worst to best not difficulty, but the bosses difficulty played a factor based on how fair i thought they were (basically of which were fair)
@@Cytonox If we are talking about fairness, the Child is the easiest but least fair. I've died to the background attacks a lot of trimes. All of the other bosses are purely mechanical. The Shapely Fidus can also be random as hell, but his patterns are kinda manageable.
So this not include Dreamborn Terror? Only fought in NG+, and makes you wish it doesn't exist, but there it is and while is hard and punishing as hell with bassically 6 phases, managing to understand the mechanics enought to fight him is so good that the rest of the game feels like going downwards.
Dreamborn terror is unfortunatelly spam fest boss. His first several phases are ok, they demand showing skill to beat it. Problem starts when his giant form shoots you with lasers and his vassel shoots with lasers, and rotary blade, that battle is decided by rng mostly. I got screen so covered with lasers you literaly don't have a place where to stand. Thats a deal breaker for me, it would have been great boss battle if they didn't merge spamable phases.
@@rendydevilzz I get your point, but is more about recognizing the hints and moving. Rotatory blade tells you when it comes two seconds before, the ground lasers too, the giant blade has 5 seconds at least, and even then you can use the dash to avoid damage. Suffer them all for some attempts, and sooner or later you start moving in your own, and it feels epic to be dodging a flying blade in the gaps of many attacks while finding an opening to hit the boss.

great takes, and yeah i’m so bummed about dreamborn terror being bugged for me
