      Are you using grade 8 bolts since it is hard to tell on the video? Could you print out your drawing on paper 1:1? It might help you with your layout before you make mistakes on the steel, which can get costly.

    It’s not just the lowness, but also the front and rear overhang, and also the mid point of the front to rear axles of a long car.

    For building flat deck semi-trailers, manufacturers use 4" Super Lite I-beam steel. Plenty strong, less weight, can be painted so it doesn't rust from the inside out.

  • @tamberp
    @tamberp 27 дней назад +1

    28:38 : That seems to be a real common thing with a *lot* of hotrodders and fabricators! In some regards it's not necessarily a bad thing, because it gives you more margin in case your design isn't perfect or there's something that got overlooked, or you end up deciding you're gonna load a bulldozer onto the deck or something! 😆But man, that extra weight (and cost!) adds up fast!
    It's amazing how much strength you can keep, using significantly less metal, with clever design and knowing how strong is strong *enough* rather than building something to be bombproof when it doesn't need to be! Sometimes, ya gotta think like an engineer: "how can I do more, with less?" The math's a little scary sometimes, but it really can pay off. Or find someone who's done the math already, and copy their answers! It's not cheating, it's just being efficient! 😁

    Maybe build the deck to have a pivot at the end of the frame rails and have the entire deck tilt. Our heavy equipment trailers have that. Very cool build, I have an f350 frame and drivetrain, and an eary Ford f600 of 800 would be a cool car hauler set-up. As soon as the doctor clears me after chemotherapy, I'll be hitting the builds again.

    Karl, I gotta thank you for your great instructional content. This past weekend at work I was able to make a very nice set of 50" diameter backdraft damper blades for an industrial roof fan out of 14ga aluminum because of the video you made about hand hammer forming a flanged edge on a wood buck. They were basically 2 half circles of aluminum, 50" in diameter, with a ⅝" flange all the way around it. They open up when the fan is on to let air out of the building, and they just gravity close when the fan is off to keep the rain out. The old ones had become too damaged and fell off, and you can't just buy them without buying the entire fan. They turned out excellent!

      @MakeItKustom I love watching and learning! I don't miss a single thing you put out. Both on the main channel and on unleashed. You are great at describing not just the how, but the why. Which is important for me because I need to know why you are doing a thing in a particular way, not just how to do it! I do a LOT of heavy metalwork in my days, but shaping thin guage sheet metal has always been a voodoo mystery to me. I've learned so much watching your content, and I love how upbeat and positive you are. Keep up the great work my friend.

    One feature you might think about - I had a colleague who made a very neat race car transporter. He had hydraulic jacks built in so he would put the chains down and then jack up the vehicle so the wheels were just off the deck. This meant that the vehicle being transported suspension was not part of the equation and stopped the mass from doing weird oscillations that sometimes happens on a bumpy road. Not necessary but definitely nice.

    Over the rear wheel you want a 2x2 either side of the tyre, not one in the middle of the tyre. You will get 2in more clearance between tyre and deck.
