0:56 "Dies from too much whiskey and leaves me with these three faces to feed. . . . " That line makes me cry every time I hear it. . . I'm a 72 year old man and it tears my heart out. . . . . every time
Yes I was in my mom's tummy when the album flag came out in 1979.. But this song is awesome but I'm a huge fan of James Taylor 1 of the best singer and songwriters in music history.. Thank you JT for your wonderful music for all these years..
What a beautiful song, and one that also very much pertains to the plight of the American low wage worker today. I miss the days when music was an art form that also told a story (i.e. Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”) and not the shit that we hear today.
1965 I worked night shift at Rockwell Int in Fairfield, Iowa running a Euland 5 spindle drill press making power takeoff universal joints for John Deere tractors and swore I would Never be a factory worker- studied hard went on to graduate school and became a social worker- near and dear to factory workers.
Seen him 8 soon to be 9 times. Only once -- (on the tour when he'd hoped Before this World would be released -- it would come out 7 months later) has this song been part of the set.
Watch the play WORKING. it is awesome. Jt is the man. I wish he and Karen Carpenter would have done a a duet. Best musicians and voices of a generation.
Millworker Now my grandfather was a sailor He blew in off the water My father was a farmer And I, his only daughter Took up with a no good millworking man From Massachusetts Who dies from too much whiskey And leaves me these three faces to feed Millwork ain't easy Millwork ain't hard Millwork it ain't nothing But an awful boring job I'm waiting for a daydream To take me through the morning And put me in my coffee break Where I can have a sandwich And remember Then it's me and my machine For the rest of the morning For the rest of the afternoon And the rest of my life Now my mind begins to wander To the days back on the farm I can see my father smiling at me Swinging on his arm I can hear my granddad's stories Of the storms out on Lake Eerie Where vessels and cargos and fortunes And sailors' lives were lost Yes, but it's my life has been wasted And I have been the fool To let this manufacturer Use my body for a tool I can ride home in the evening Staring at my hands Swearing by my sorrow that a young girl Ought to stand a better chance So may I work the mills just as long as I am able And never meet the man whose name is on the label it be me and my machine For the rest of the morning And the rest of the afternoon Gone for the rest of my life
What a privilege for every musician on the stage and every person in the audience...almost sacred! I've been to many of James' concerts - at one, it was only him and his guitar, another included his backup singers, etc. Never experienced a full complement of musicians like this, so I'm thrilled to have found this video! God bless you and your talent. James, you've gotten me thru many stages of my life to my old age now. There will never be another you❤❤❤
James is one of my very fav artists and I think Millworker might be my fav song by him, it is just so lush and melancholy, the instrumentation are perfect and James vocals are perfect. The bass part is really distinctive here. I really love those twiddle-y bits at the intro. Perfect song. Perfect performance.
This is my favorite James Taylor song. It's not his most popular, but its one of the most beautiful. I'm not a lyrics guy. Lyrics don't do much for me. This song keeps me hanging on every word.
This is the most important song he's ever written. I worked in a factory in my college days and knew these people. Their story needs to be told way more often.
...lovely, ...when you sang "for the rest of my life" then the flute I got goosebumps, so Beautiful, ....I also love the song "Cotton Jenny" ...that was when I was younger and the beat is faster in that song but it's also uplifting, ...thank you so much for your Music~very enjoyable 🙏🏼🏞️🌾
Music and Theatre Lesson if you care... Studs Terkel wrote a book, I believe an Oral History, much like EDIE, about Edie Sedgwick, but maybe not. Anyway, Studs’ book is called called WORKING, where he interviewed "regular people" about their jobs. It was turned into a musical of sorts as there was not one lyricist and one librettist, but many contributing songwriters. James Taylor wrote this song for the musical from the point of view of a female who works in a factory and "never meets the man who's name is on the label". Just a little background about the song and its journey to all of us.

The same happens to me on lines that follow...
How has this video only been watched 49.5k times... half of that must have been me...
Han Wassink I’m the other 2/3.
Me,too!
The other must surely been me!! I truly need to hear this song daily! I can relate to the story behind this…it’s personal to me!
Me too

So often a simple song can say more than a hundred books. God bless you James...
Patrick, have a listen to Droving Woman by Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly and Dan Kelly.
Up on roof James taylor karaoke
James has a genuine shout of being the greatest male live vocal performer of all time
Louis armstrong, frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, al jarreau. There may be others as well. James' brother Livingstone, IMHO, is a better "performer."
Agreed. Hands down.
@@fredstuebe4018 dean martin.
Yes Dr. You’re absolutely correct
James always appealed to the working man and people who lived simple lives. Lucky enough to have seen him live once.
Absolutely sublime live version of this heartrending song.
That bass gave me the chills and then Walt Fowler played and I passed out
There is no Bass like Jimmy’s. He is too good and Walt is also amazingly good
this man's voice. this song. i'm undone.

Beautiful sad song. Great guitar and bass on the intro.
My favorite James Taylor song. It makes me cry every time I hear it. Thanks so much…..

Perhaps it’s just the quality of this performance that has me right now, but this may be the greatest song that James Taylor’s ever written.
He didn't write this one but he perfected it.
I take that back, I guess he did write it.
Thank you my brudda from anudda mudda. Peace!

This is the best accompaniment in all versions of this song...
One of my favorite songs by JT.... incredible that he wrote it too.
Watch the play WORKING. it is awesome. Jt is the man. I wish he and Karen Carpenter would have done a a duet. Best musicians and voices of a generation.
Shades of Angel From Montgomery By John Prine. These are artists. These are not just songs. They are works of art.
Jimmy Johnson, one of the most tasteful bass players out there. Power and grace! What a killer song. Poignant forever. Thank you James Taylor!

Millworker
Now my grandfather was a sailor
He blew in off the water
My father was a farmer
And I, his only daughter
Took up with a no good millworking man
From Massachusetts
Who dies from too much whiskey
And leaves me these three faces to feed
Millwork ain't easy
Millwork ain't hard
Millwork it ain't nothing
But an awful boring job
I'm waiting for a daydream
To take me through the morning
And put me in my coffee break
Where I can have a sandwich
And remember
Then it's me and my machine
For the rest of the morning
For the rest of the afternoon
And the rest of my life
Now my mind begins to wander
To the days back on the farm
I can see my father smiling at me
Swinging on his arm
I can hear my granddad's stories
Of the storms out on Lake Eerie
Where vessels and cargos and fortunes
And sailors' lives were lost
Yes, but it's my life has been wasted
And I have been the fool
To let this manufacturer
Use my body for a tool
I can ride home in the evening
Staring at my hands
Swearing by my sorrow that a young girl
Ought to stand a better chance
So may I work the mills just as long as I am able
And never meet the man whose name is on the label
it be me and my machine
For the rest of the morning
And the rest of the afternoon
Gone for the rest of my life
Just great in every way! The song, the singing, the band, and the arrangement!
Oh my. Just so beautiful. Thank you.
Today, all of a sudden this song just popped into my head for no reason.

Had the privilege of seeing JT three times in concert, love this song, our greatest story teller, greatest voice
One of the greatest songs ever written.
learned this song in 6th-grade history class decades and decades ago
So amazingly close vocally to the version on Flag that I listened to thousands of times.

Reminds me so much of the firms around here where you get lost in a job then after 40 or so years you wonder what just happened?
JT speaks to a lot of us with this song, God bless JT.
