My natural inclination was always that the doppelganger here represented a sort of shadow figure; the parts of the man that he found most repugnant. We tend to let them fester away and grow until they overtake us. It provoked the detective so badly because it wanted to drag out the same in him; seeing the worst in others often brings out the worst in ourselves. For the detective it tried to push him over the line from justice to vindictive punishment. I personally find it much more chilling to imagine that rather than there being one boogeyman roaming around, each of us carries one in us that might come out at any time.
The line "i didnt like his face" reminded me of a thing i learned about in psychology class Specifically the idea of the banality of evil, the idea that nobody does something to be an explicitely evil moustache twirling character tying maidens to train tracks. Rather everyone does what they do either through force or because they think they're in the right A very specific murder case actually comes to mind in which a man killed his best friend out of nowhere, this wasnt an accident or because they got in a fight, it was a completely sober act of murder. When questioned why he did it all the man could reply with was "he [the friend] had just been kind of annoying for a few days"
I love Night Springs, and i find it curious that is so hard to find content about it, art, theories and sometimes even the episodes on yb, but i got a non oficial T-Shirt. Also i couldnt stop thinking about the doppelganger concept in Twin Peaks. Great video!
The idea of the evil doppelgänger makes me think about the functionality of the Dark Place. We obviously know the Mr. Scratch is some entity from the Dark Place that took on the form Alan offered at the end of the first game, but what if this isn’t the first time something like this happened. My impression, specifically, is about the Dark Alan we seem to see in the AWE visions sent to Jesse. Many people think that it’s Mr. Scratch, or some new version of him, but what if it’s the “Mr. Scratch” equivalent of another writer who entered the Dark Place and gave up their form, Thomas Zane? His double being out in the world could explain some of the confusion about Zane nowadays, namely the poet/filmmaker debate. Thomas Zane the poet wrote himself out of existence, leaving behind his double who claimed and changed his life. I could obviously be completely off base here, but given the nature of the “I wrote you writing me” relationship between Wake and Zane, I’ve always been a fan of the idea of the two of them being deeply connected, potentially even as a cosmic doppelgänger situation (a la Beth Wilder and Jesse Faden, although obviously for very different reasons).
I've had a suspension for the man in the mirror for years, so seeing this video only makes this particular episode of Night Springs even more fascinating!

@@GamingUniversityUoG I mean to be fair this also strong evidence that Alan can utilize Retro causality effectively potentially temporarily rewriting history
Awesome! We have a video lined up where we will address this topic. I recently threw the question out there on twitter about if Alan can make it past or out of the dark place without Mr. Scratch. My theory is more in line with the second you propose, but with some differences. There's the theory that majority of individuals deny that they are capable of doing (or even thinking about) things that maybe considered evil, wrong, immoral, etc. instead of accepting and learning how to coexist with this part of the self. If this is how Mr. Scratch came to be, one can argue that Alan cannot just abandon him, that he must be "whole" to move on, which means that he would have to accept the worst of himself (and anything it brings with it after years in the dark place) back into his psyche and hope that he is strong enough to deal with it- or perhaps it will be done against his will (what's left of it). In AWE Alan is in bad shape, can't remember who he is (completely relying on his notes) and is totally compromised, leaving himself vulnerable for the part of himself that's still "out there" to reinsert itself back into Alan's psyche and become the more dominant part of his personality. Why Mr. Scratch would want or need to do that is a separate topic. In Alan Wake he mentions (as our narrator) how he fantasized about different ways he could "torture" the kidnapper (among other things). In American Nightmare, we see Mr. Scratch carry out such acts, and frequently reminds Alan that they aren't all that dissimilar, especially in the mind. When I think of this episode of Night Springs, I think of what Mr. Scratch told Alan. He said that Alice is their wife, but soon will be only his. A LOT of questions come from our theories and we hope that our end product will sufficiently answer most of them. Really great work! Keep it up 🙂
Yesterday I completed a Quantum Break and in Port Donnelly Bridge level there was a TV with footage from castings for a potential narrator of Night Springs episodes. It was fun to watch, only one man, whose voice was matching with series in Alan Wake and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, had been doing mistakes on purpose. P.S: yeah, I remember writing a comment about boys watching Threshold Kids while men enjoy Night Springs... Well, behold: gigachads worship Address Unknown.
I see the Night Owl as being someone who keeps an eye on the town from a distance. People call in to him all throughout the night to talk about anything. He probably reports everything weird to the Night Springs group.

I think the idea that the dark doppelganger kills the original is interesting metaphorically, 'cause if you do just take the show as... a show, rather than something that has been or is being used to shape reality, it examines this idea we seem to have that the act of doing something so horrible changes you -- that in a sense, by killing another you also kill the person you were before you committed the act. It's why we tend to use words like "killer" and "murderer" almost as if they describe some species other than human. Sometimes being shown something like that in such a literal way opens us up to question ourselves and ask -- is this thing we want to believe really a reflection of reality, or just a fantasy to convince ourselves that it could never be us? Could it perhaps be both? Or lie somewhere in the middle? I'd be inclined to think that it's both, or, at least in this case, that if it is a fantasy it's probably one that's good for us. :)
