    Only the truly great Doc Watkins would have submerged within the magnificent Watkins siblings and Chris Thiele. This version is among the greatest you can listen to on line. Find Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs version for a much moe subdued and lovely rendition. But wow, listen to Doc! And to Sean Watkins! Great guitar solo and backup guitar. And nothing beats Sarah Watkins who only gets greater with age. And of course Chris Thiele, who raises the mandolin to ever greaater heights.

    Great talent on the whole stage. I have always thought that Sean Watkins was overlooked as a wonderful guitar player, maybe because of the attention paid to Chris Thile. Which, of course, is understandable.

      +danny kooy Chris Thile is far from undiscovered. Look up Nickel Creek, Goat Rodeo Sessions, and especially Punch Brothers to see what he can do. He's so much better now than he was when this video was recorded.

    I'll take Doc Watson's assessment over that of others of Thile as a singer. It could be that Doc had at least a little knowledge of good singing when he heard it. Blind folks have reportedly heightened senses in the other areas of their life/biological makeup. Yes, I think that Doc was the more authoritative voice in this debate.

    Chris thile level of talent to. Pick mandolin is so ridiculously profound.
    He might very well be single greatest living mandolin player in the world.
    I mean he. Is. Lightning fast and. Everywhere the thing goes.
    But he is a bit of a goofy host on what was prairie home companion before the whole. Insurrection and overthrow of the long standing Garrison keeler ...
    Well whatever
    He is a good host but he is like some kinda new hip hybridization of the new hipster. Snarcastic uber-duber-nerd who loves. Speaking. In such. Wierd soft. Lilting. It would seem he was going to get blown away by a stiff wind. And that's topped with the cherry of " recounting. How his. Girlfriend basically owns him and keeps his silly ass balls in her coin purse
    And he is just haplessly beholding to her. But. He is hell bent. On flipping the script. I suppose.
    He is a good host. But he actually looks like he could be. A cousin of Garrison keeler
    Good damn Mando picker but that guy is one silly old goose

    Sorry, but DOC was being generous in this instance. Chris seems like a nice guy and a fine mandolin player, but as a singer he was not trained, nor developed. No need to be cruel, though. He is okay as a fill in.

      Angler X wow. You need to shut up. He is one of the best singers out there. In this video, he's a lot younger than he is now. Check out his singing now, he's amazing. But honestly, this is not bad.

    • @scottmcdonald9685
      @scottmcdonald9685 7 лет назад +3

      you must be tone deaf, or just deaf

    • @AlaniSugar
      @AlaniSugar 7 лет назад +2

      Angler X haha that's a funny joke. I'm a professional musician, I play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bass, and some banjo, and piano. I learn most of my music by ear, so definitely not deaf or tone deaf. If you know about the International Bluegrass Music Association, they have an awards show every year, and the Fiddle Player of the Year award this year went to Patrick McAvinue, he was my teacher for a number of years, and taught me most of what I know. I have also learned from 5 time Fiddle Player of the Year award winner, Jason Carter of the Del McCoury Band. Now when I tell you that Chris Thile is an incredible singer (and phenomenal mandolin player) I know what I'm talking about. You obviously don't.
