Fantastic video! This playset makes for an amazing display piece. It looks good from every angle. The interior graphics are just too cool. Palitoy did a great job on all the details. Thanks for sharing such an in-depth look at this. It was nice seeing the step by step construction process of everything going together.
This set was my most,MOST biggest want as a kid but yet again my folks said they couldnt find it,i think they said that though cos they didnt want to fork out for a cardboard playset, sigh! Awesome review again mate! ;)
Thank you for an depth introduction to this play set that I never even knew about as I’m in the US and I had the Kenner one. I would haVe LOVED this one too!
me and my bro got this for christmas 78 or 79 in australia. our parents set it up for xmas morning when we woke up. it's still at my parents house and now my bro's kids play with it. its still in almost mint condition as we were taught to respect our star wars toys. wonder how much its worth today?
Had this (second hand) as a child, and loved the holy heck out of it. Such a blast from the past. Just acquired the Lego Death Star set to scratch my nostalgia itch and then came across this. Appreciate you posting a video live and direct from my 8yo self's bedroom 👍
Just watched this again, such a great and thorough review, Luke. I can't believe this thing wasn't more available or more popular. This is an AMAZING playset for being mostly cardboard and had a lot of creativity evident in it from the chasm perspective drawings on the floor to the walkway to the gunner in the middle. All very cool features. I also love the fact that they incorporated the door that Obi-Wan and Vader fight in front of into the artwork of the wall on the biggest open space of the playset. Very cool. Still can't believe they haven't done an excellent plastic version of this.
actionjackman It certainly is Luke, been after one for ages even had the 6 foot pegs for the figures and the original instructions. They made paper to last in the 70's lol. Glad you only need 10 clips and not the full 12 as it only came with 10.
I had one of these as a kid. My dad bought it back to Australia from the UK as a Xmas present in 1977-78, I believe he paid around 9 UK pounds at the time. He (or should I say 'Santa') spent a lot of time assembling it on Xmas Eve. Given the scarcity of this playset, I'd wished I'd kept mine. This Pallitoy version of the 'Death Star playset' was so much better than the multi-level one put out by Kenner. No wonder they are one of the most sought after Star Wars collectibles!! Thanks for posting!!
I had this playset back in the day. I was given it by a friend of my mum's whose son had grown out of it. I loved it and all my friends did as well but we were always confused about how no-one else had heard of it. There was another more common deathstar playset that was largely plastic and not hemispherical. Nowhere near as good. :-) Great channel. Luv and Peace.
Thanks for walking us through that, very cool and thorough review. Awesome to see another version of a vintage Death Star. I really don't know how Kenner/Hasbro still hasn't made a proper version like this with multiple rooms, levels, combined with all the play features and key scenes you would want. I don't care how expensive these would be, people would buy them in droves. The only reason Hasbro's playsets don't sell is because back in the day they were horrific looking. The vintage stuff like Yoda's hut, the Hoth battle sets, Jabba's throne, the Cantina, these were all very cool.
My mum and dad got me one this set in 1978 I remember it so well it lasted me for years before my mum gave all my star wars figures away in 1980s. I loved that set really great memories.
Excellent - this is the best review I've ever seen of the Palitoy Death Star. Huge fun to watch. My one isn't in such good condition as yours. It's a fantastic playset. Thanks for the vid!
I have had my Palitoy Death Star since 1991 when a friend in the UK provided me one. I didn't know it existed. I also have a complete Kenner run of vintage action figures, playsets, vehicles, and cases. Modern figures display well on the Palitoy Death Star.
I had this as a young whippersnapper😆,it got hammered and was used to destruction in no time,my parents couldn't find another set for love or money anywhere in the uk after that initial release,I was wounded!nice one for the flashback! 👌👍
It used to take me 3 weeks to save enough for a figure, then they put the price up so it took 4 weeks, anything like this would ony be for Christmas or Birthdays if you were lucky. Thanks for watching!
Your videos are of very high quality. I've watched about 10 of your vintage SW ones tonight. I feel like whenever the 80s kid in me wants to buy one of these toys on Ebay, I can just watch one of your videos and be satisfied. Ha!
I remember in either '80 or '79 my parents bringing this home for my brother and I...I remember us in the kitchen and being awed by it as this was my first playset....but sadly gave it away to a 'mate' with all my figures and vehicles a few years later....wasn't until years later when I started working that I was able to buy it again....along with the Nth American version.....it would be cool for a new version to be brought out...just imagine!
I have the Australian one! being from Australia. This set is so underrated as a toy, I had so much fun with this. The sneaking around, I would have the base slowly explode and floors would be taken out everyone would have try to escape. It helps I have a couple of stormtrooper figures, really made for great play. I would say this set is actually better than the pie slice death star set also available, even if it made of card. Still have it, in box, just missing a couple of small pieces from the top gunner station
wow, that's pretty extensive. the death star playset i had in the 90s was a plastic shell with a hangar area, an aa gun, and a piece that went SPROING.
Hey mate, you pose some interesting points so I did a bit of research, and ended up with more questions! From what I can tell the only Toltoys 20 back figures were the original 12 plus the 4 cantina aliens, not to say the others didn't get release on the Kenner cards in Australia. But that only gives us 16. Just a point to note, the blue and red Snags have different arms too. What I did find though was a Vinyl Jawa on an ESB card, amazing! If you ever get your answers be sure to let me know
New drinking game, for every time you hear "trash compactor", take a shot of whiskey. In all seriousness, great video, you go into an amazing level of detail. 👍
similar in many way's to the action force base, but it had a wrap over helicopter pad come runway part. great review luke. one thing luke i've noticed on this vid your stormtrooper's are a little yellowed have you seen my vid on repairing white plastic? it may help?
fantastic review my friend!il defo check out your channel!great set, wish wed get a re-release,this is awesome!youv earned another subscriber, may the force be with you!
this is so fantastic!.why wont Hasbro return to the playset concept for the modern line!.even re-release the original death star kenner playset in new colors or something and maybe some updated parts,it would be awesome!.could be a tie-in to the 3-D release of episode 4 or something.great review mate!
This is so awesome thanks for sharing, INDEED an in depth review, and totally makes me want to own one of these! in fact this was one really playable set. You would think Hasbro would make a super cool playset similar to this by now but 20x better! Superb review!
Man this is a top top review! Well Done! A Fantastic piece, I occasionaly dream one day I'll find one mint at a boot sale! Gotta have your dreams right!? lol Really enjoyed this vid Luke! Cheers Fuzz.
No not me, a guy that lived in my neighbourhood had it. He was a bit older than I am, think about 4-5 years. He had a huge Starwars collection, with lots of amazing things. Including this cardboard Deathstar. He never let us play with anythinh though.
You could make a better one from lolly sticks and spray paint, how about that for a challenge? I hope in POTF2 those small Death Star sets would continue and combine to for a really cool set, they missed a trick there. Thanks for watching!
That's more than I paid for the real deal, you hit a winner there because there aren't many about these days! Will certainly check your channel out, thanks for watching.
yeah, if this unfolded to give you a docking bay that would be cool, even more massive though! I have that AF HQ in the loft somewhere, I will get round to Action Force before long, they are just hard to get too in storage.
Thanks for the review. It's pretty ridiculous that in modern day toys, we never see playsets when it comes to Star Wars. Although what is worse is that they didn't ship enough of the last VC figures and they have wasted the last six months not selling any new SW figures. The VC should have continued and I have bad feelings about Black Label because of the 6" robs 3.75" efforts.
I still don't get why Hasbro hasn't ever rereleased something like this. They did that Cantina and Jabba's palace in the 90's(Kenner) why the fuck not the Death Star?!? :{
too true mate, I think that Ep1 wave just about killed the VC collection. Shame too as the black series isn't looking too great right now. Thanks for watching
I have seen your discolouration video, you were very brave to test it on Jetfire! Have you had any problems over time with the plastic getting brittle? I tried using normal bleach on an arielbot, it had no effect on the colour and the wing snapped clean off next time I tried to transform it. It is something I am going to have to check out as there are a lot of off-white star wars figures in my collection.
I had this when it first came out loved it and i don't know whatever happened to it i know the box it came in was used on the floor of our dogs house out b the door i remember it because me and my best friend would go in there to get out of the rain as kids it would b considered pricey flooring these days 😢😂
Great video there bud, even though it's made of cardboard, it's far superior than the kenner play set. I used to have the Action Force playset. I'm gonna have a look around on your channel to see if you've got it
MONKEYZENTV no one loves the Palitoy playsets as much as I, but to say the Palitoy version is far superior to the Kenner version makes me think you really need to go and have a good look at the Kenner Death Star. No amount of rose tinted kitsch nostalgia makes up for the amazing features of the american one. The Lift, the ObiWan tractor beam shut down, retractable bridge / rope, dianoga, accurately sculpted massive exploding gun - perfect for the POTF figure of 1985. And these are just the features missing from the cardboard one. The palitoy Cantina/Jawa/Droid Factory playsets at least mostly retained the features of the US versions. The Palitoy Death Star wins out in floor space and the fact it is round (like a small moon) and you can kind of dock vehicles in the 'bays', but really that is about it. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but lets be realistic.... given the choice in 1979/80 I'd have chosen the US version in a heart beat. I've have both since the mid / late 90's, plenty of time to compare them lol.
Good luck with that, this was a set I never thought I would get, then I saw it on ebay and bid, no one bid against me! OK it's not mint or boxed but the kid on the box is scary anyway! Thanks for the kind words.
I remember this, it was all cardboard. I had a Jawa sand crawler and I remember that was mainly made of cardboard as well. Still totally awesome though!
I've just got one of these in a bundle of star wars stuff i just received, it was only missing half a peg i thought it was spares! Thanks to your video, we were able to put it together as we had no instructions! Thank you very much! Just a thought, you mention theres no prison cell, but theres a room that has a bed in it (printed on the floor) up above where the walkway leads to, i think this is meant to be the cell as on the box it does mention it has a prison cell? Again, thanks for the video it is much appreciated!
+actionjackman much bigger than i thought! I've had to have a re-think about where to put it and how to protect it. Until then i've had to take it down
Fantastic video! This playset makes for an amazing display piece. It looks good from every angle. The interior graphics are just too cool. Palitoy did a great job on all the details. The room on the right hand side of the overhead gantry is the cell area.
There is a sleeping mat painted on the floor.
What an absolute perfect indepth look. You've earned yourself a new subscriber.
Thank you for an depth introduction to this play set that I never even knew about as I’m in the US and I had the Kenner one. I would haVe LOVED this one too!
Awesome!--Man I wish they still made these---You know they would big sellers--
Great review of this wonderful toy!
Gold video man, brought back some memories 😺
Had one of these as a kid, hours of fun!
A friend of ours had it and would bring it to our house and we would play with both sets thats how i remember the action force stuff :P
me and my bro got this for christmas 78 or 79 in australia. our parents set it up for xmas morning when we woke up. it's still at my parents house and now my bro's kids play with it. its still in almost mint condition as we were taught to respect our star wars toys. wonder how much its worth today?
I had this too. It was a Sears exclusive in the Canadian market.
no it's cardboard with a few plastic bits like the pegs and the gun turret, shute etc. Thanks for watching!
I had this when I was a kid in the late 1970's. God, this brings back memories!
Me too
I'll second that pal :)
Had this (second hand) as a child, and loved the holy heck out of it. Such a blast from the past. Just acquired the Lego Death Star set to scratch my nostalgia itch and then came across this. Appreciate you posting a video live and direct from my 8yo self's bedroom 👍

ianA Cheers Ian, I need to dig this set out again sometime. I do have a review coming up of a similar set to this.
reliving my SW childhood plus your very melodic, relaxing voice - better than any psychotherapy you can buy!
Best review that I've ever seen of this playset. Thanks for shooting and sharing it!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed seeing it
Got mine yesterday I love it fantastic play set
Supernatural20052014 Excellent? Is it all you expected?

Thanks for taking me back to my childhood
canvoodoo No problem, glad you enjoyed!
Your childhood was playing with cardboard???? wow did you ever get bored of it?
Had this in Canada as well as the Kenner one. A 6 year old me would play at my buddies for hours re playing scenes

What a great review! And what an amazingly cool looking piece this is!
Loved this play set as a kid. Brilliant.
I love your reviews! Please keep up your flawless work! Thank you and best wishes!
Thanks buddy! And all the best to yourself.
Amazing set! I would of loved this as a kid and that mirror bit is pretty neat and clever.

I know why do parents do that! Giving stuff away, and then you spend half your adult life tracking it all back down again.

Impressive! Great vid, man. Very nice playset, I must say.
A RUclips channel called Star Wars Conundrum is stealing our Star Wars videos. This is one of them. Just letting you know.
Thanks for the heads up guys, looks like they have a few of mine. Cheers
RetroBlasting I never knew broken Vader was planing something evil
BY THE POWER OF COPYRIGHT, I AM STRIKEMAAAAAAAAAN
actionjackman WHY HAVEN'T YOU UPLOADED FOR TWO YEARS!?
RetroBlasting q
Totally, diorama sets would be big with collectors and kids alike, thanks for watching!
Absolutely wonderful and informative review as always
It’s incredibly well made and very smartly designed especially on a lower budget that was available to the Kenner version for the US market.
There was a Canadian version of this as well. Though it wasn't out west. From what I heard it wasn't in western provinces.
i had it in alberta as a kid
I had this. Brings back great memories.
Awesome mate!! Really loved this as a kid Luke!! Cheers, Roy
This playset is a work of art!
no worries, thanks for watching
Very cool! Who knew cardboard could be so cool?
Remember him do ya? lol we must be around the same age range i loved being an 80s kid!!! best time of my life .
New drinking game, for every time you hear "trash compactor", take a shot of whiskey. In all seriousness, great video, you go into an amazing level of detail. 👍
I had the sears canadian version and sold it for a arm and leg on ebay...20 years ago
Nice collection! Thanks for watching!

Another great review thanks !!!
your best video yet one for the true collectors i really love this set did you know action force re used this for there set .
No worries mate, someone had to take up the challenge, this kind of depth is a you-tube first. Thanks for watching!
I do remember him and morph! Never did get a picture in the Gallery though! ;@)

I've never seen one, I think they are both good
Where've you been?

Cool, I didn't know it existed until the late nineties. If I had had one as a kid I would probably never survived the years
That's more than I paid for the real deal, you hit a winner there because there aren't many about these days! Will certainly check your channel out, thanks for watching.
yeah, if this unfolded to give you a docking bay that would be cool, even more massive though! I have that AF HQ in the loft somewhere, I will get round to Action Force before long, they are just hard to get too in storage.
Watching this saves me getting mine out the box!
kingshearer2 Cool, cheers mate

I have seen your discolouration video, you were very brave to test it on Jetfire! Have you had any problems over time with the plastic getting brittle? wow, thats a blast from the past!
You should do some more vintage Star Wars videos.
Great review! What an amazing playset. A shame us Yanks got that boring plastic tower version of the Death Star. This one was the clear winner.
Awesome thanks buddy!
Great video there bud, even though it's made of cardboard, it's far superior than the kenner play set. I used to have the Action Force playset. I'm gonna have a look around on your channel to see if you've got it
Well mate, sorry it took me so long but Action Force HQ should be up tomorrow evening.
I've have both since the mid / late 90's, plenty of time to compare them lol.
i would have loved that as a kid
Good luck with that, this was a set I never thought I would get, then I saw it on ebay and bid, no one bid against me! OK it's not mint or boxed but the kid on the box is scary anyway! Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks, I have the Action Force set too, it's much smaller than this but very similar.
Thanks mate, big fan of your videos so it means alot!
Was there any Dianoga creature to go with this set? I've heard there was but never seen one.
+M. A. The green rubber Dianoga figure came with the US Death Star playset which was of course completely different from this.
I remember this, it was all cardboard. I had a Jawa sand crawler and I remember that was mainly made of cardboard as well. Still totally awesome though!
That was the Land of the Jawas set. Cool you had these back in the day
actionjackman That's the one! I remember I had to snap it all together.
thank mate! She has the greatest collection!
you had me going for a while there! thanks mate
there was a Canadian one as well
that would make a cool video, would love to see it!
Yeah, they always are, especially boxed. I got lucky with this one
Actually this set was available in the UK, Australia, France, New Zealand and Canada.
I always wanted this toy as a kid. (Never got it though!)
There was also a Canadian version
I've just got one of these in a bundle of star wars stuff i just received, it was only missing half a peg i thought it was spares! Thanks to your video, we were able to put it together as we had no instructions! Thank you very much! Just a thought, you mention theres no prison cell, but theres a room that has a bed in it (printed on the floor) up above where the walkway leads to, i think this is meant to be the cell as on the box it does mention it has a prison cell? Again, thanks for the video it is much appreciated!
Nice score, big in real life isn't it. Glad the video helped. Cheers
+actionjackman much bigger than i thought! I've had to have a re-think about where to put it and how to protect it. Until then i've had to take it down
Thanks for sharing.
