This album is underrated BECAUSE at that time in 2002, people were still mocking Mariah for the Glitter fiasco which is crazy 🙄 but fun fact, Anne Hathaway said she has this album and she also bought a mechanical reindeer at the same time and decided to name it ‘Charmbracelet’ 😂 she was seen fangirling to Mariah in her movie premiere back in 2015

@@strangerthings88The proof is that Glitter was actually a decent movie. Most people that I know or have asked about it agree. In fact, I have never seen or heard anyone say anything about it that has actually watched the movie and has an independent, free-thinking brain. Only the hand chosen "critics" have a negative rating. The powers that be have the power to make or break you in this industry. The soundtrack was amazing as well.

@@angivens86it came out on 9/11 and it’s a pretty cheesy movie even Mariah knows that and has said it a ton of times. Tommy paying a critic wouldn’t have done anything if it stood on it’s own.

This was her first single from the album, but chosen from her label. She was not sure about that, but they wanted to send that message of her making it through the rain, after her glitter so called fiasco. Thanks for sharing.

i think mariah didn't want "through the rain" to be the lead single but the label wanted to capitalize on the "sob story sensationalism" following her mental and physical breakdown.

An Homage to Her Parents, especially her father (Alfred) . He passed away before this album was released but they had reconnected and mended their fractured relationship. His favorite flower was the Sunflower 🌻🌻. This was also Mariah's 1st album under , Def Jam/Island Records who was run ,at the time, by Legendary Antonio L.A. Reid (former biz & music partner of Babyface, LaFace Records) L.A. and Mariah had been friends for a while by this point and was the person to approach & convince Mariah to join the label after The Virgin Deal fell thru . This album is so Underrated and IMHO one of the Most Beautiful Moments in her Vocal Era(everything sounded airy / ethereal) . She recorded several music videos for this album (however the label didn't release the one for , The One , which was also shot in Tokyo as a continuation of, Boy I Need You)

I mean, haven’t you learned by now that Mariah always does an impeccable job on everything? It’s just when you think she’s out of tricks, she blows your mind. it was a pretty good album but not critically well received and commercially did not sell well. Still, there’s some amazing songs on that record. She was in a good place mentally during this time and the charm bracelet tour was astounding. Her voice was in great shape and she played more intimate venues. I saw her at radio city and met her at a meet and greet and she was absolutely lovely and warm and so grateful. Always remember that. Her eyes are stunning and she looks at you as if she’s actually interested in what you have to say. She is just like no other. Love ❤️ her.

Here's the thing about Through The Rain... it was released in 2003 (as a lead single no less, as you mentioned) and honestly, by this time, that sound was sooo tiiirred 😩 radio had been saturated with these kinds of ballads - some brilliant, but mostly run-of-the-mill, for well over ten years at this point. There was nothing "fresh" about this song, nothing that made it stand out, which is what the public was craving at the time. Mariah delivered this with "Emancipation" but Through the Rain was a bit of a "meh" moment if we're being honest. And the Charmbracelet album is definitely a fans' album... plenty of material for the lambs to fawn over, but nothing that made the "pop world" stand up and take notice.
Please let it be known, I have adored Mariah since the Emotions era when I was 9 years old (1991/'92), but when it comes to the Glitter & Charmbracelet albums, the narrative from fans - and Mariah herself - goes something like this: sabotage by the record companies (and ex Tommy Mottola), lack of radio support/promotion, backlash from the fact that the Glitter movie was a laughing stock, etc, etc, led to these albums being overlooked. My opinion? They were just not what mainstream audiences were after, sonically, at that time (2001-'03). Simple as that. Now. They are not bad albums, by any means. They each have a very distinct sound and succinct personality, which are important hallmarks of any great album. And if those were the vibes you were after, you would not be disappointed - quite the contrary. I listened to them both a lot - Loverboy is an all-time personal fave. But I was deep in the pop world at that time and I was aware of everything in the top 40, and at the end of the day, as appealing as those albums were/are, neither album was what mainstream audiences particularly cared for in the early 2000s. They just didn't "hit the spot," so to speak. A perfect comparison would be We Belong Together. That song arrived at the exact right time. It was a throwback to those early 90s slow jams, and by 2005, enough time had passed for the nostalgia factor to be ripe. But it sounded fresh at the same time; it wasn't a boring re-hash - it was old-school *and* modern, all at once. Nothing on Glitter or Charmbracelet had that impact, if we're being honest.
I probably sound like a hater, but here's the thing; from MY perspective, time has been kind to both of these albums. Because the point I've been trying to make is that they were simply victims of bad timing. 20+ years later, taken out of the context of commercial and mainstream expectations and early 2000s musical tastes and trends, both records are very enjoyable listens.
Anyway...Thank you for attending my TedTalk 😂😂😂 God, I've rambled on WAY longer than intended 😶 ...I just wanted to put this Mariah "era" in a broader context for you, a newbie, from myself, someone who experienced it as a fan in real-time 😊
Lastly, it must be said: great reaction, as always... I look forward to being a Patron when I'm not so horrendously broke 😁😁😁

Personally, I enjoy alot of Mariah's music but think the Glitter and Charmbracelet album were awful. Way too much whispering in Charmbracelet and the vocal editing and pitching is ridiculously obvious. No memorable melodies either.

I've noticed that Mariah or her record label had the tendency of lay on too much on the Formulas, what functions 1 time, it has to work 1000 times after that, it worked with we belong together and don't forget about us two very similar songs that were singles from the same álbum, that time was a hit, those two went #1, so they thought they could do it over and over again and obtains the same results

Johnny, I literally just came across BTG today. My love of Kelly Clarkson prompted the RUclips notification. Watching you discover her, and find a deep appreciation for her talent, was truly fascinating for me. After watching 3 of your episodes featuring KC, the next one I saw was Pink. OMG, these are literally my 2 favorite female vocalists ever! When you said "I know who Pink is. I know "Let's Get This Party Started (etc), and I thought, yeah ok, she has a good voice, but was never interested beyond that", I agreed with you. Her first album or two were good, and fun, but that's it. But, since then, omg. And, to watch you realize the amazing artist she has grown into was so gratifying.
I have never watched this type of review before. I normally just want to enjoy the music I want to enjoy. But watching your reactions today was fascinating to me, and, to use your own words (in reference to KC) addictive.
So, thank you for this. And yes, I subscribed. (First time ever, for anything, btw)
Perhaps, for those of us late to the game, you can tell us a little bit more about yourself?

Johnny .. it's me again Mike from Virginia. This video shows off Mariah's best vocals like you said. It's a shame she didn't include the "Whistle" /"Belt"during her Japan concert. Also check out Diana Ross 70's "live" Concert at Caesar's Palace doing the song "I ain't been licked". I don't know why this song wasn't a number one hit for her. She really sings the "crap" out of this song. Just Google Diana Ross "live " at Caesar's Palace " This was when she was #1 female singer in the 🌎!!! Before Mariah... Whitney..or Beyonce came on the scene.
