Thank you for the detailed explanation of why you trim the bottom of the cutting at an angle and all your valuable instructions on your videos. I learn so much from watching them!
That looks like a fun project without extra hands to help you! Fold several pages of newspaper into the same shape as your piece of cloth, and use it like the cloth. Spines will not prick your hands then.
A couple of ways to tell which end was which, is match the cut ends to the width of the root portion from which you cut. Or look at the direction the spines on the root portion or top portion. Many times some of the larger spines may point down a bit so the cut portion will be the same. Looks like you have grown your collection in a couple of cuts !! Could also use one or two for grafting stock!!! Like the way you beveled the bottom cut . Should do better than left flat cut!! Thanks for sharing Ana!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌻🌹🌳🌷🌲🏵🌿😃👍
I looked at the spines and I think 🤔 I planted it the right way. Haha. Who knows until they root. But thanks for your suggestions, Clyde. I wouldn’t mind having more of this cactus as it has big and bright purple/magenta flower. 😃
Another really AWESOME video Ana :-D and you have done an amazing job of cutting the etiolated part, thats a fantastic tip with cutting the top cut on the bottom part in the pot to a side to stop water collecting at the top, and you have planted the top cutting up amazing, and thats incredible you have two new pups growing already, thanks so much for sharing this wonderful video Ana, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a fantastic Tuesday today XXXX
I have a peanut cactus that pups like crazy. I decided to take a few large (long) pups and put as decoration with a larger columnar cactus. These pups seem very robust and I find them growing where they fall with no support. I put rooting powder on and planted them all in one, straight away. Two weeks later all seemed fine except one pup which was going a bit red with stress. I had planted it upside down! So its head had rooting powder on it and had been covered in soil. The Pup was washed and put in the right way round it seeds ok now. The (to me) strange thing was after washing the head that had been buried instead of growing roots tiny pups had started to form even though its head had been under soil. Still there and not dropped off. Learning new stuff all the time. Thankyou for another excellent video.
We’re in the Phoenix metro and our windy days always have me uprighting pots, even with large rocks adding weight. I’ve enjoyed your videos for succulents in the desert. Our summers run from April to the end of October.
When I cut mine, I also forgot which end was the top and I left the cutting on a napkin outside (getting only morning sun) and it began growing sideways. Good thing about Florida, is that there is so much humidity that the cacti 🌵 can grow without water
Another excellent video, Ana. Hopefully they do well. Thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful day and week from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜☕️
Thanks a lot for the excellent etiolation tips video. I’m learning a lot with the details explanation. I’m just starting with cactus and I fallow in love with that. Thanks!!! Thanks Anna!!!
Lots going on,and I believe you got it right! Let's hope, and I am sure you will get three Very interesting plant's as a result of the very Drastic and dramatic action,Bill.
Love your cactus collection for what I see.. thanks for this video , you helped me a lot with my rat tail cactus that happened to get etiolated 😢 I hope it will survive!!
Another brilliant and very instructive video, Ana, thanks so much for sharing all these wonderful tips and your experience! Really enjoyed watching!! Have a wonderful day and rest of the week, best wishes and happy growing!! 👍🌵🪴🌵🌺🌼🌸🏵
It’s worth pointing out that some species of cactus, like the peanut cactus (Echinopsis chamaecereus), may look etiolated when displaying normal growth characteristics. These are often sold unlabeled. I almost threw a prop of one out last year thinking it was something else.
Hi Ana funny my torch cactus was exactly like yours except it grew to about three feet just yesterday I decided to cut it in three and will plant in couple days good luck with yours
Oh, very good observation. I don’t see the spot anymore now on the cactus. I think it was a piece of debris from somewhere. But fingers crossed that I planted it upright.
Haha. I wish I knew the answer. But twice I did this and one rotted while the other one just shriveled up to death and did not root. Hoping it will be different this time. 🤞🏼🙏🏼
Ana, if you look on ne end it looks like the top part of the cactus had punchers on it. If you watch your video you will be able to see what is the top of your cacti. Hope that helps. Haha I’m texting you before I finish the video so you might already have it figured out
The straight-cut part is the top i think If u go back to the videos u'll know which one is the top Also there's a black spot on the top part that i noticed when u were cutting it so pretty sure it's that part
what happen if we cut, there's an offset grow 1 place...then I cut the top on the other side of the offset that again (they were callous already). will there be a chance to pop another offset grow? sorry for my bad english
It's simple to tell them apart because you cut it Angled on the one end and straight on the other. I don't understand why this was so difficult. Obviously the angle cut came from the bottom of the cactus.
Etiolation can hapen for a lot of reasons, every top cut will etiolate, etiloation meean that the cactus is not growing healty. Also i prefer to use a sharp knife, Midlle cuts take more time to develop a head.
English: It can happen when the cactis are indoors as well with what appears to be good sunlight & the room gets hot perhaps too hot. My advice is move them to a different spot to find each cacti's sweet spot. I've come to the conclusion that mine didn't get enough time in the sun.
Can’t believe how quickly the bottom produced offshoots!! Very cool!!
In summer, cacti grow fast here. Good thing I had to perform this cut during summer time. 😃
Thank you for the detailed explanation of why you trim the bottom of the cutting at an angle and all your valuable instructions on your videos. I learn so much from watching them!
I’m glad you find them helpful. Hope you learn from my mistakes as well. lol! 😄 Thank you so much.
What a smart way to cut it. Something I learned from another video is to cut one side at an angle that you don’t want to plant in the dirt. 😊 ❤🌵

Good solution anna

Nice one Ana 🙂 The word "etiolated" played hell with the subtitles 😁😁
I bet my accent made it worse. Lol!
@@CactusCaffeine It came out as "Italated, insulated, itulation, ethylation and eatulation 😁 It didn't like your Welsh accent at all 😮😄

Great video. I am having a problem with one of mine. Now I know what to do.
Glad I could help
the bottom part is the one with diagonal cut, as ive seen it in you video when you cut it.
I enjoyed watching😊🤲💖Your trichocereus has offsets growing! Great, and now you have two new plants👌
You should use very large tongs to hold the cactus instead of a burlap bag, You're less likely to get stuck by the thorns.
I bought some barbecue/grill length tongs at the dollar store and they’re great!
Hi Ana funny my torch cactus was exactly like yours except it grew to about three feet just yesterday I decided to cut it in three and will plant in couple days good luck with yours
Haha. I’m not alone! 😁 Good luck to us!
Thanks Anna learn so much from you
hello 👋 Beautiful cactus lady...
Hello there The one you thought you planted upsidedown had a dark spot at the top 🔝
Check the 5 minutes mark
I noticed a dark spot at the top part of your middle piece :)
Oh, very good observation. I don’t see the spot anymore now on the cactus. I think it was a piece of debris from somewhere. But fingers crossed that I planted it upright.
Esse cacto é lindo demais 😘😍
Great tips on this. Curious why you think you haven't had any luck on rooting the middle part?
Haha. I wish I knew the answer. But twice I did this and one rotted while the other one just shriveled up to death and did not root. Hoping it will be different this time. 🤞🏼🙏🏼
@@CactusCaffeine Yikes! I've just tried mine now, hope I get mine successful!! 😅

Haha. Thank you! I did watch my video before I replanted the middle. Hopefully I got it upright. 🙏🏼 😉
Can you do this to a silver torch that has got to big
Yes! You can do it to any columnar cactus. 🙂
Hello, quick question here, could you have just planted the cactus on its side in order to have it root no matter what
The top is the part where there is a little bit of dirt that you left on it.
The bottom of the middle cut has dark green on the base
You go back to the plat and put the stem back in place to where it fits best 😀☘️
Hi Ana 😘😘😘
Hi Joy! Thank you at binisita mo ako. 😊 Regards to the family!
The straight-cut part is the top i think
If u go back to the videos u'll know which one is the top
Also there's a black spot on the top part that i noticed when u were cutting it so pretty sure it's that part
Very good eyes 👀 you got! 😃🌵
what happen if we cut, there's an offset grow 1 place...then I cut the top on the other side of the offset that again (they were callous already). will there be a chance to pop another offset grow? sorry for my bad english
I believe the darker end was the middle end
I saw the darker side too. I think that was the bottom. 🤔 Wish me luck!
Keep us posted
It's simple to tell them apart because you cut it Angled on the one end and straight on the other. I don't understand why this was so difficult. Obviously the angle cut came from the bottom of the cactus.
It will absolutely root no matter what way it's in the ground.
u can watch this video to know where is the bottom part... ☺️

Thank you! I have yet to get a knife solely for gardening. 😄
Wow! first to like👍💗
First tool it’s about cables cutting!!!
Nag etiolation rin karamihan sa mga cactus ko kahit nabilad naman sila sa araw.

Too much water and too little sun makes for weak growth.
I wouldn't recommend using cinnamon, use sulfur while cinnamon can work it is far less reliable than sulfur.
