    Hi Guys :-D In this video I talk about The different types of Old Man Cactus

  • @emmitstewart1921

    I have a story to tell about old man cacti. In 1972, I had a chance to attend the National convention of The Cactus and Succulent Society Of America. I learned a great deal that has remained with ever since. After the show and judging, two of the judges gave a seminar where they discussed the different plants in the show and how they judged them. One of the plants they talked about was a Cephalocereus that stood about twenty inches ( about 60 centimeters) tall. He said that he could tell that the plant had been grown indoors, probably in a greenhouse all of its life. The reason he could tell was that it was covered by hair all the way from its base to the top. If it had been growing outdoors, it would only have hair on this years growth. The reason is that birds pluck all the hair off in the spring and use it to line their nests.
    Isn't it wonderful that, even in the desert, nature provides for all of its creatures according to their needs. The hair protects the growing tip of the cactus from the sun and collects morning dew to water the plant, then, when the skin of the cactus has grown tough enough to stand the sun, there is hair for the birds to line their nests, while the spines remain as dew catchers.

    Thanks for posting this interesting video and thanks to the viewer that requested it.
    These types of cacti harbor unique adaptations that permit them to survive the often harsh weather and temperatures seen in mid to high latitudes of the central Andean range. From pictures I have seen taken directly from habitat, the montane areas are essentially barren, strewn with rocks and highly compacted ground. Nothing else appears to grow other than these specially adapted cacti. The environmental biome is basically Montane Desert Alpine.
    The wool is a remarkable feature as it serves a multitude of purposes. The first is, protection from freezing winds and snow which can ice over and destroy the cacti's epidermis. It is unlikely that heavy spine production could eliminate this threat altogether so the wool acts as a blanket and a first line of defence. The second, is that the wool diffuses much more of the ultra high levels of UV to protect the plant from becoming sunburned.
    Some species of Copiapoa like (C. Cinerea, A. Glaucum, etc), secrete a chemical into the epidermis to combat this problem which often gives the plant a pale blue/grey appearance). Interestingly, unlike coastal Eulychnia cactus, which point their spines downwards to take advantage of mists. High altitude cacti are often well above the cloudline, which means virtually no rain for long stretches of time. It seems these plants must live off the snow melt that happens from time to time with a rare warm spell.
    In the case of some species of Oreocereus, the cactus grows extra long 'reddish' spines that emerge through the wool to deter any foraging animals. On the other hand, there are a few smaller cacti that are native to the same region, like (Maihuenia and Oroya), that don't have the wool. I think it is largely down to size, during the day and well into the night, these smaller cacti take advantage of radiated heat from nearby rocks and stones; they're small size makes them less vulnerable to ice and icy winds.
    I would very much like to explore the area myself one day, and see the old man cacti living and growing in they're natural habitat.

    I have an old man cactus, about 2 feet high. It was broken off the base of its parent, which is about 7 or 8 feet tall. Some roots are attached to the big pup but a piece about the size of a man’s fist broke off. I have read to sprinkle cinnamon over a cut or damaged bit to prevent fungus (I think it was) Do I let the pup dry out on the damaged bit before planting?I live in north Australia and we are in our Spring season now.

      7/8feet!! That's astonishing Cher. Did you grow the parent plant from a young size might I ask?.

      demonhalo67 No. it was on the property my son and his wife bought about 7 years ago. It also has another pup about 6 inches tall.

      Hi Cher :-D thats wonderful you have a 2 foot high old man cactus, yes I would sprinkle cinnamon powder over the cut or damaged bits to prevent any chance of fungus etc, and let the pup dry out and form a white dry callus before planting, the good news is its the perfect time of year to do this now its your Spring, Good luck with your Cactus and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to North Australia for a wonderful afternoon XXXX

    Where did you get the tunnel please

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 года назад

      Hi Keith :-D I bought the polytunnel from Feelgood.uk.net and it is great, I do use sandbags around the polytunnel for extra support and bubblewrap all the inside of the polytunnel to protect from the cold in winter, but we got the polytunnel initially until we could get a greenhouse, but it has been so good we have kept the polytunnel for the last 3 years, ideally a greenhouse would be much better as it would let more light in and would be more stable in strong winds etc, but the polytunnel has been great for us and would definitely recommend feelgood.uk.net as they are a great company XXXXX

    How can you tell the difference when they are young?
    Edit:. I'll refrase that, lol. Out of the three, how do you know which one I have bought when it is so small?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 года назад

      Hi Adi :-D it can be more difficult to tell them apart when they are very small as they do look similar when young, Espostoa has more of a hair that looks like it has been spun around the cactus like 'candy floss' on a stick, and the Oreocereus has more spines that are more visible and looser hair, but the Oreocereus and Espostoa can be hard to ID between them when small, but time will show the differences, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
