I'm so glad that everyone is loving this eye look! Lots of people are asking which products I used-it's some new makeup that I'm testing. I applied the whole look on camera and the video will post on Friday January 7th (the day after tomorrow). It will probably be labelled as a "try-on haul" or some such thing. See you there!

Before I even watch your video…my opinion is that smaller eyeshadow palettes have been trending (4 -9 pans) for over a year.

“Collective advertising that we call a trend” is the perfect way to phrase it. It’s not really a trend until it’s so heavily pushed through marketing that we believe everyone is buying it, at which point it becomes an actual trend because the everyday consumer beings purchasing it.

You’re spot on about trends! I would add from the perspective of 62 years, trends are cyclical. My palette is very different from yours; my best colors are lavender, aqua, and tangerine. (Very fair blue-eyed redhead whose hair has turned pale gold.) Every few years, they come back around and I replace things I need in my favorite colors. I no longer feel a panic when I miss out because I know I’ll see them again.

Yes! And by the time it comes back around it’s in a better formula!

I'm a perfume collector/ a person in "the perfume community" and I think that perfumes did really well over the pandemic and more people got into them. I think the reason is that scent can help with mood, and I use perfumes to make myself happy, comfort me, change or regulate my mood. Also, I mostly stopped wearing makeup and got deeper into perfume because I was home and no one saw me, but I felt comforted by fragrance. I think a lot of perfume lovers can relate. I do think perfume is being hyped more now because of that. You're not imagining things here. Sales went up and of course now fragrance is the thing. I'm immune to mainstream perfume marketing because I'm into niche perfumes, but there are perfume people on RUclips now who really push buying the latest releases, even in niche brands.
Where I get sucked in with makeup is limited release in luxury brands, esp for springtime because I'm fair-skinned and cool-toned and all these pinks and stuff look good on me. So I want Dior and Chanel stuff really badly starting around Feb. And then they are gone because they are limited! I have had some regrets missing some things but I try to keep it in perspective.

    • @Figgatella
      @Figgatella 2 года назад +2

@Christine I am very hesitant to purchase anything on limited release because if I really love it I am not able to repurchase. Even though it may be beautiful, I can’t justify spending on a limited item.

    • @sarahshoxx
      @sarahshoxx 2 года назад +3

@@Figgatella I don't understand this idea. I've Heard lots of influencers say they are not interested in limited items or they don't want to use it because it can't be repurchased I just don't get that because something else better will come along there's always plenty so there's no need to worry about something being limited.

    • @ipetzombies

It's definitely a thing. I run an independent shop and one of the main things I make are weird/unique perfumes and custom perfumes and I've been SLAMMED this year.
I feel the same way, it's definitely a mood boost thing. Even not leaving the house, smelling good makes me so happy.

I love that you're contextualizing hot takes within marketing of trends! I noticed that rosey pinks and browns seemed to be really prominent in all of the "best of 2021" lists by big magazines so I feel validated that you've seen it too lol. I think when I can see a pretty product as being part of larger pattern or trend, it really does help with externalizing a desire for the one specific thing. For example I was taken with the lovely looks created with that new ND mini palette. but once i realized that this color palette is just being promoted a lot by various companies, I didn't really care about the specific palette as much as wanting to recreate the looks. Now I have a pretty 9 pan made with my old CP shades that does everything the ND mini can do and more! It felt like a perfect way to start off my no/low buy year. Thanks for all the inspiration Hannah!!

    my theory re perfume trending:
apparently there's this thing called the lipstick index which states that in times of economic trouble the sales of lipstick rise. but in the current crisis lipstick sales didn't increase because of course not - because masks.
but perfume is the perfect substitute, a luxury product you can wear when starting to leave the house again, giving you a sense of control and providing another facet of curating your presentation to the outside world. scents are so personal.
i know i know, the lipstick index was long discredited but i still like the theory as it makes so much sense to me :D i definitively see it in myself... the more i feel uncertainty, the more i want to buy shiny things to feel a sense of control.

Spotting these trends in new makeup releases hot takes reminds me of the the trains you have mentioned in previous years - like the grungy rainbow train - but with a slightly different focus.
I think it’s hugely useful to identify trends (or trains!) for all the reasons you have mentioned. I also use it in an additional manner: if the thing I’m attracted to is a trend, I bet many more brands will be bringing out the same sort of thing, so I’ll wait to survey the whole selection before making a purchase choice. I don’t want to jump on the first to be released in case it gets better. (And often by the time I’ve waited, I’m so oversaturated, I don’t want the item anymore …)

What a fantastic approach to a "new makeup releases"/"will i buy it?" video. As for products that need to be used regularly to be of any benefit (like brow serum, lip masks, and skin care), i tend to purchase inexpensive/drug store versions first, whether or not they are of high quality. I use them to develop the habit of consistent use, then once the product has become part of an "auto pilot" regimen for me, then i might venture into higher-end products (unless the inexpensive works well enough for my needs/expectations). My thought is that regardless of how "good" a product is, it will not do anything for me if i am not using it consistently; i would rather waste $10 on a product i don't use, than $50 on a product i don't use. 🖤

As someone who loves lip balms I definitely see a rise in releases from brands. It was super tempting for awhile, however, the thing that has improved the condition of my lips and skin the most is drinking a half gallon of water a day. I bought a cute half gallon jug and it’s been the best thing I’ve done this year. I was considering lip fillers, but they are so full and plump now. Dehydration is a hell of a thing lol

I live in Japan, so "what's trending now in USA, and or European countries" doesn't affect what I feel I should wear to be a trendy person, because we have different trends in own country, and I keep myself away from it by being inspired by something else.(That's why I'm here watching beauty channels of Americans) still, it did make sense when you pointed out that seeing numbers of similar products makes you think that's trending so you should buy one or some for yourself. My guards are up now! I'm not going to be tricked by that! Lol
I wouldn't say I'm going to try no buy year, but I'm sure I'll be less buying things because of you!

I have a similar take on perfume. I always try to get the little samples and testers with my Sephora orders and that’s been enough for me for years. And then in the last few weeks I’ve been really feeling like I ‘need’ to buy a full sized and full priced perfume. Thank you for calling out all the advertisements I’ve been seeing! It really put it in perspective.

It's so refreshing and important to discuss being mindful of our makeup lover impulses. I catch myself getting distracted by sht like a dog going SQUIRREL before I remember that I don't even wear that type of makeup. Glad I'm not an impulse buyer or I'd be regretting a lot. And idk about anyone else, but I don't mind content about "old news" items at all. I actually find them super helpful to hear more perspectives once people have had more time to get past their first impressions. I think quality items will stick around if they're good enough to, instead of just seeing first impressions and then never hear of them being used again. The fast fashion makeup is making a lot of us jaded....

    • @DiMagnolia

I agree about older products, I am one to take a lot of time before making purchases because I want to know how it performs beyond a first impression. It’s also important to know how a product will perform over time, does it have longevity or will it be unusable after a few months?

I would love a Rare review, because your reviews are so enjoyable in general.
The fragrance industry is definitely about to pop off, and I think it's thanks to the pandemic, as another commenter described.
To my dismay, I feel like astrology is even more ubiquitous these days. CP had earlier had a themed palette with Kathleenlights, but didn't have the little mini palettes (perfect for casual Ulta checkout line grabs and stocking stuffings) until recently. People really do remember that just because something has your label on it, does not mean you have to buy it. *You do not need to buy it.*

Trends don’t really interest me, partly because they’ve not proven their worth and partly because I only want products that will enhance my features and eye colour. I’m passed, and may have always been passed, trending items. I don’t want to look like everyone else, I just do me for what I like and what I’m feeling that day. For me, makeup is an expression of myself and not what I’m told is trending, so advertisers have a difficult time with me. I find that quite funny as one of my daughters runs a very successful advertising company abroad 🤣

LOVELOVELOVE this format for a new releases video! It made it so much more helpful than just a typical “here’s what’s new” format. As someone who finally realized the need for a no buy, this format really helped me think about why I get sucked in from a big picture perspective, why something that as a single release may not interest me but once I see it from a lot of different brands I suddenly find myself wanting. It’s hard to see patterns when every day is a barrage of new releases, so this format really helped give me tools to see patterns and better understand my own desires. Great work as always. Yes please review rare beauty! Even though i had couple of their mini liquid blushes, I still want to hear about your opinion cause you always have new perspectives that I haven’t looked at. I am not sure if it is still available but if you are going to buy them using your own money, maybe buying small tube of the liquid blushes is a better choice since it’s VERY pigmented therefore you only need a tiny dot for your whole cheeks.

Love your intelligent, grounded commentary. Your approach to makeup is so refreshing, honest, informative, and inspiring.
Trend I’m noticing: Lunar New Year limited edition releases. I can see how these would be very tempting for people who love reds and golds, or are true collectors rather than users. The packaging I’m seeing is gorgeous.

Your top today is really lovely Hannah!
Thank you for highlighting the perfume trend because I agree it's aggressive and definitely keep almost getting sucked in 🙃 for some reason that Gucci Bloom bottle has me by the heart (I don't like florals though so I'm safe from its charms haha)

This is a wonderful deep dive into hot takes and the processing behind the desires. Enjoyable. As always. I didn’t care for the Rare Beauty highlight. It is overpowering and feels like the unsophisticated attempt to be the Auric Glow Lust, which is the queen of glow.
Regarding Very Peri, my mom painted our house this color with a washed out version on the trim and deep charcoal shutters. It was stunning and all class. So many tried to copy it and ended up too blue or bright or purple. For those of you who want to use some Very Peri eyeshadow, pull out your Norvina palette.
Pink eye makeup is always a V-day push.

I think even though there weren't as many solid trends, this video was helpful to keep people grounded. To help remind us that just because something is new & popular it may not be for us.

i just watched your last video yesterday and i’m so happy that you posted today, because i truly appreciate and love your content. i’ve noticed fragrance and candle videos everywhere on all platforms. i loveeee my chloe nomade perfume and i’m extremely content with it. i was so attracted to the fenty highlighters but i have two and i have wanted to try the rare beauty first, because i can’t get it out of my head since it released. the bliss liquid blush was one of the first ones to release, and i would love to see you do a true review on it because i have also been eyeing it since it released. i have heard that the fenty highlighter is gorgeous. the pantone color is stunning but just not on myself. at all. i love pink but i’m soooo OVER IT!!! i’ve always loved lip balms, like since forever and decades ago from fresh when they very first released, and i’m good with the ones that i already own. yes, i’m very glad that you made this video. it made sense to me personally. thank you so much for this video. 😘😘😘
ps… your nail polish is beautiful.

So many good points. I remember I was so happy about blush trending last January-April…and I over bought like crazy…I have enough blush for a lifetime. Zodiac trends are easy for me to avoid too because I almost never like the crap they have for Scorpio season and I don’t want another sign. I also agree with perfume and cologne…I know what I like already but I do want to smell Tom Ford’s new Ebene Fume. I don’t like Rare Beauty so you can skip it for me lol. Also…I hope the Natasha Denona Mini Biba is not a eyeshadow trend for 2022 because I feel like we have been stuck on rosey brown neutrals…I would love something fresh…because I already have all these colors…like everyone else.

That cream blush effect you talk about, I had that when bra sizing start being more inclusive of small waist large cup. I used to always buy new lingerie when there was something that I fit, but now there are enough brands that cater to my size and I need to just contain myself.

I'm excited for the color of the year! Just in general it feels like I can never find things in the colors I look best in in the cuts or styles or products I like which aren't really things that have ever been trending (at least not that I've seen in anything I can actually afford).

And I absolutely have felt personally victimized by all of these trends 😂 these reminders are helpful!!

I love the way you framed your approach in the beginning of this video.
Scents - I don't feel assaulted by perfume advertising but I don't stalk sephora or ulta's web page and the main people I've seen talking about it are Lauren May Beauty and Samantha March. So, their videos may have helped open me up to wanting perfume but it's not like the floodgates of cream blushes from the last year or so, which I firmly decided I didn't want to get into. I prefer to just use my lipsticks for this purpose if I really desire a cream blush look / feel.
I have recently been in the mood to purchase perfume. I had stopped wearing it entirely for a long time but in October I picked up a couple from Victoria Secret and in December I bought a few body mists. While I am more open to purchasing perfume and body mist I'm already pumping the breaks. I have plenty now. After decluttering 30 - 40 bottles that were overwhelming me a few years ago I'm not trying to have my perfumes over flowing again.
Rare beauty - meh, will watch but don't really care
Color of the year - I would love to wear a shirt in that color, and I could maybe get down with wearing this eyeshadow color. It turns out I do have a shimmery shade in this color and I'm good with that. I feel like the Blueberry Muffin palette is kind of this tone too, matte wise and km not all that fond of that palette.
I think I may have finally found the mindset to reduce palette purchases. I was really thinking about it before the new year and I'd like to have few enough palettes that I can use them at least on average about one month out of the year. I can't quite bring myself to declutter down to that point but I am at about 26. I may be able to get myself down around 18. On average at this rate I would only use my palettes about 2 weeks of the year.
I know I'm probably going to want Sigma's next 14 pan palette though. I'm a sucker for them. And I do kind of want them all. Just the 14 pan palettes though.

I really prefer the cream compact format for blush but I’m also so curious about the rare beauty formula. I’d love to hear your thoughts. ALSO advertising as trends was so enjoyable and I hope this is a recurring thing!

YES! Rare beauty, highlighter, the new cream stick bronzer, and the blush. And of course, the mascara. None of “my you tubers” have reviewed the bronzer stick yet, and I’m really curious about since I do love my liquid blush in “joy”

When it comes to fragrance - I find that if it’s advertised I don’t want it. And a lot of those Sephora brand fragrances seem to wear off fairly quickly. Where I do get into trouble is when my MUA at bergdorf sends me samples with an order of something else . 19 of 20 are terrible but there’s that 1 that is gorgeous and unique and expensive and then I save up and wait for their seasonal beauty event and splurge when I can get it 20-25% off with the discount. Or sometimes selfridges has a price 30% less than the US price for whatever reason.

I just found your channel a few weeks ago and I am binging! I love how you are so mindful and able to create interesting content without only reviewing new make up all the time. And I love your deep reflection about the products that you do review. It is so helpful and changing the way I am consuming beauty content! I am so over watching new make up try ons all the time, even if I like the personality of the youtuber. Your channel is amazing! Thank you so much for puttting your point of view out there, because I think it is super important. Lots of love from Germany ❤️

I agree fragrance is trending. I think it circles around as a trend every 15 years or so, at least I recall in the early to mid 00's celebrity perfumes and big brand perfumes (juicy couture, playboy, etc) became a big deal and then faded into the background.
