with the spindly growths, my guess would be the nitrogen level is too high comparative to K and Ca. I know what you're thinking, K isn't involved with cell formation and you would be right. But K inhibits N, so if the N is high and the K is high the plants will take K first, leaving N behind (thus not allowing the plants to absorb too much N). If there is sufficient Ca, the K doesn't need to be high to inhibit N.

i used to get those light patches when i used citric acid to lower the ph i dont do it anymore though as a lot of them didnt like it
