So these spirits are trapped in a state of perpetual limbo...they're unaware that they are harming children, as their bodies were programmed to do...it's like having schizophrenia, in a sense..they have their own consciousness, but when certain "parameters" are met, they black out and become the mindless machines going on auto-pilot and killing kids. And some of the spirits seem to be putting these revelations together a little bit at a time, which is turning them semi-psychotic in the long run. They all have the same goal of getting back at "Purple Guy/Bonnie", but they're also, again, trapped in that odd limbo where time seems to stand still and their consciousness flutters in and out...
Actually, the animatronics weren't meant to be murderous, except for Sister Location's animatronics. In fact, when confronted with children, they are shown to be nice to and protect the children, like the Toy animatronics do in FNAF 2 and Foxy does in The Silver Eyes. However, they never really saw William's face, so they see any kind of adult as their murderer due to their murderer being an adult and that being the only information they have on him.
There aren't as many possessed animatronics as you'd think and only the Funtimes were meant to be murderous machines. The Funtimes (and maybe the new ones) are the only ones who have hurt children. Elizabeth died from Baby and did go on to possess her but couldn't combat Baby's need to kill so moreso went along with it. Charlotte (Puppet) was next to die but the Puppet wasn't a killing machines, just controlled by an angry girl who wanted justice. After being murdered by Afton and finding out other kids have been murdered by him she gives them the animatronics to possess and joins them in the hunt. The missing five kids Gabriel (Freddy), Jeremy (Bonnie), Susie (Chica), and Fritz (Foxy). Golden Freddy is either a missing kid named Cassidy, the Bite Victim from FNaF 4, or both which is hinted in the Fazbear Fright story The New Kid. These kids are stuck in limbo but they don't hurt children, instead they try to find their murderer and kill him and because of that they only have harmed adults. Since they never saw William's face due to him being in a Bonnie suit they just kill the adults to make sure but the scary thing is is that they're fully aware of what they're doing (except Elizabeth).

I heard in security breach none of the animatronics are possessed anymore because of The fire that happened in the past. “for you monsters trapped inside the Corridors give up your souls they don’t belong to you” That basically meaning he’s trying to release the souls of the children that were trapped inside The animatronics. Also purple guy is spring trap. Bonnie was one of the souls.
