The trick is learning what the game actually does so you can "no save" play without crashing. The game always creates the auto save when you touch the save point, which is how the game normally operates. It's when you manually save it tracks it as "having saved", so you can in fact salvage a "no save" run from a crash if you grab the auto-save and it will still treat it as having not saved. A real "no save" run would require not touching any of the save points.

In my experience, auto saves only return you to the save point when you die, but you don't return to them if you close and reopen the game. Only manual saves hard-save your progress to that point. Maybe that was the specific answer they were looking for.
What a shitstory, I just tested it and it does autosave automatically without need to interact with the points For example, one autosave creates when Sans is leaving after "rock" scene
no wonder undertale took so long to make, toby used most of the time to think of stuff that players would do and then adding a dialogue or two talking about it
1) Sans have other special no saving dialogue, you show only hardest "1LV, No heal and No Armor" version. 2) In the battle with Asriel, there is also a special text during the transition to the second phase for passing without saving (for the second time by the way) 3) After defeating Asriel, the game always creates a save for the player, -which cuts off the last chance to replay without a True Reset.- (upd.) which just create save to lazy player. True Reset opens only after you go to surface. Well, it also completes the path of the one who forgot (how) to save.
You can actually replay Pacifist (or any other run) after beating Asriel, you just need ro Reset before you go to the Surface (aka, get the credits and *The End*)

Would be great if you could cover it and prove whether it was legit!

If that happens, [*****SPOILERS*****] Asgore asks you to take his soul and use it to cross the barrier, then is implied to commit suicide. THEN Flowey destroys Asgore's soul so you can't use it.
@@notoriousresearcher I had this happen my first runthrough, you have to kill toriel, and none of the other "story" characters except maybe mettaton. Other than that I killed a bunch of enemies in the first few areas but not a genocide run.

It took me one try when I did it, but I couldn’t do true pacifist because there was no save file to return to after beating Omega Flowey (so, no way to trigger the Undyne phone call to initiate her date with Alphys)

I'm pretty sure if you die without a save you don't get sent down to the biggining I do remember dieing to blooky on my PS vita without a save and it only sent me back a few rooms
I find it funny that like no one here likely has attempted a no save run because it’s not actually no death. When you die, you need to respawn somewhere, so Toby added “death checkpoints” that make it so that if you haven’t saved since that checkpoint was set, you will be sent back there. The checkpoints I believe are right after the long hallway, right after the papyrus and sans spinning cutscene, right before where undyne throws spears at you, right after the core puzzles, and in the elevator to new home. I likely missed a few, but I haven’t died in no save enough to know.
I love all the small additions and attention to detail in the game that Toby didn't really need to put in. That's how you know that he has passion for his projects.

You would still be on the genocide route. Your LV doesn’t determine if your on genocide. A different code known as “Murder Level” determines if you’re on a genocide route or not.
