I don't know what separates your videos from other video game classics videos, your tone of voice, the way you cover the history of the game you are reviewing, but I am drawn in! Back to that time, almost feels like I'm playing that game all over again while watching and reminiscing the memories surrounded to that time. Great stuff as always! Thank you!👍👍

I remember how a friend and me first went to our local game store (okay, 30 miles away - I was barely old enough to drive lol) shortly after launch where they had several N64/Mario 64 games running, with a sign stating there was a strict 10-minute time limit to play (even though they weren't demo kiosks that would reset). A few hours later the store manager gave us a job playing the units until New Year from 10-2 on weekends - we were doing so well in the game, competing with each-other head-to-head in each level and generally showing-off different things we'd figured-out about the play mechanics, that we not only attracted crowds but "convinced" several parents to give-in to their kids and buy-up the system and several games. Sure, it was barely minimum wage for 8 hours/week, but it was the most fun I we ever made making money.
I also still remember the kids' laughter when that bird stole my Mario's cap...

I didn't get an n64 until around 2000 or 2001 when I saved up from my first job. My parents did rent us one a couple times like for my birthday or when my mom was out of town for a week or when we had company. But the boy I carpooled with to all sports had one as did my next door neighbor so I got to play Mario within a month of release
Also my sister gave mine away when I was in college. I came home to find almost all my video games and systems gone because my parents and sister thought I wouldn't be wanting them
    I was not thrilled

And also my bday is in September too. I got my N64 for Christmas that year though. I have never felt the way I did when I first played this game. No console or game has ever made me feel the way this and Ocarina of Time did.

My cousin and I always referred to Mario’s movement in N64 as Barry Sanders, when Sunshine came out we were disappointed, but when Mario Galaxy came out we both said “Barry’s Back!”, Lol. The Mario and Zelda franchises are my absolute favorites of all time and I’m so glad that my kids get to experience them as well now, my youngest even loves retro games, he’s currently playing Zelda A Link to the Past and I’m planning on getting Mario 3D Allstars so they can play those titles as well. I still own a N64 so it’ll be cool to see if they like playing Mario 64 on the original hardware or on the Nintendo Switch instead, to me nothing can beat the N64 remote especially when playing Mario or Zelda, it just feels right with that remote, Golden Eye too.

I got the n64 and this game on launch day and was enthralled with it from the moment I played it. I played non stop for two weeks straight only stopping for stupid things like school and sleep! In fact, I think it was the only time where I would come home from school and immediately do my homework just so I could play for the rest of the day uninterrupted. This was an amazing game and gave me some of my fondest memories of gaming. Definitely one of my favorite games of all times. Great video!

The first time I played Super Mario was 64 was, like you, at Walmart. It was Christmas season 1996 and I went to Walmart at 1am--there was finally no line at the kiosk. As a kid who grew up with NES Mario, having Mario in 360 was a dream come true. It was a great moment.

12:55 as a kid, I didn’t know that was a throwback to the original Super Mario Bros. (because I actually didn’t own a Nintendo Entertainment System until I was 10 years old) I thought that it was a Chinese Dragon engraved on those pillars before Bowser’s final battle.

Great review as usual! My brother and I went the route of PlayStation in the late 90’s since we were following Squaresoft, so I didn’t grow up with the N64.
Two years ago I finally jumped into the Zelda series on N64 and adored it! I’m playing Mario 64 now, and my five year old niece LOVES to watch! Three dimensional platforming takes some practice! The camera is as much of a hazard to me as pitfalls and enemies!
    Love the video, Tyler!

The local Blockbuster Video had demo N64’s, I was 13. I remember being blown away: “Mario in 3D! How can it get any better than this?” I got an N64 as a birthday present the following year. I gladly trekked up to Blockbuster that summer to rent games. I’d gladly make that hot, sweaty journey over and over again. Fave titles were of course Mario 64, but also Ocarina of Time and GoldenEye (my grandfather, who *hated* video games with a passion, got me GoldenEye that Christmas with the help of my uncle, who seemed to know about the hottest games even though I don’t think he ever played a video game in his life).
Edit: when we got that first N64, our TV at the time didn’t have the RCA jacks, so I had to connect it through our Hi-Fi VCR. Problem being, the internal antenna on the VCR was out of whack. There would be video, but no audio. For the first few months, we played our N64 without sound.

I too first saw and played the N64 at a Walmart kiosk after pouring over months of coverage in magazines. I specifically remember this younger kid (I was 13) saying his first time swimming in SM64 was “practically a religious experience”. This exact quote was in a magazine, can’t remember which one. In my mind I was like “Yeah I read that article too kid”.

the first time I saw an N64 was in 1996 in a Belgian sega game store where Virtua fighter 3 was also promoted and there was a lot of people around that game, while I saw a sleeping Mario in level 1, dreaming about spaghetti and ravioli on a huge screen. the controller was there for the taking, and I had fun for hours 😉👊

Great video as always. My girlfriend likes playing Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, I personally think they're junk. Good reason being they were developed after Mario 64 and decided not to use any of the foundations clearly laid out in this masterpiece. Mario 64 set the bar, and everyone else wanted to be like Nintendo, except they didn't bother figuring out what makes a great 3-D platformer. This game will never get old to me, it's an all time classic.

The longest kept secret that hardly anyone knows is the life at the tunnel once you go through the castle moat door where the water is at the bottom of the slope, that goes down then back up, you need to go to the 4 corners of the wet area and you get a life that bounces on the water making a new noise. Also there is another room like this at the top of the slide in the level Tall Tall Mountain before you slide visit the 4 corners of the room and get a life and then get another just past the entrance to the slide.

I was at Bristol Center Mall in CT. I walked by a Kay bee toy store and it was right there in the window. I stood there for 15 minutes just staring. Then I realized oh snap I’m an adult and I just got paid so I went in and bought it.

Very informative and well made video. Never heard of the store you got the system at. Got mine at toys r us and my second one at eb games when I traded in for.the jungle green edition. I loved the orginal mario 64 back in the day and it deff pioneered a lot of things. Wasnt a fan of the remake on the ds though. I have it and cant stand playing it.

My first time playing this was at a Wal-Mart. We didn't get one till just before Zelda was released but still Mario 64 was the 1st one we had and played.
And as a side note I hate trying to catch that (5 minute long string of language that even a drunken pirate would call massively obscene and vulgar) rabbit in that basement

Yeah the rabbit was ridiculously awkward to catch. Camera angles we're tough to chase the rabbit in that small space

Yes, I remember the first time I saw an N64. I had a PlayStation and Sega Saturn when the N64 dropped. I wasn't interested in it at the time. I knew it was coming but I was so caught up with the PlayStation and hating the N64 controller, I didn't want it. I literally made fun of pictures of the controller. They want me too play with that stupid stick, yeah right, no one anywhere is going to want to play with a stupid analog stick!
At any rate, my roommate was a big Nintendo fan and waited in line for hours to get it launch day. We had multiple TV's in our living room with two Playstations and a Sega Saturn as well as a Genesis/Sega CD/32X. I sent to the game shop with him and had a chance to secure one for myself. I bought Tekken 2 and told him to "Have fun waiting for your toy." I was joking, we messed with each other like that all the time, I even took a shift for him the night they sold them (first midnight at EB).
He gets home with it and connects it to a 32 inch Sony Trinatron TV (at that time we only bought Sony TV's, now I only buy Samsung) like a wild man. I laughed and went back to playing Tekken 2. When he hot it up and running he calls me over to look at the graphics. We were greated with Mario's giant head and I thought.. okay, so what? When he finally made it in and I saw Mario in full 3d running around...I quickly excused myself for snacks....yes, snacks. I drove to Walmart in order to tey and get one. As you can guess, I didn't find one and I forgot to pick up snacks...busted. Thankfully, I worked at Walmart at the time and secured one with Super Mario 64 a week later. I even left Tekken 2 running when I left. I say Tekken 2 as I don't remember which game it was but that sounds right. ;)
Oh and how wrong was I with the analog sticks? I hated (at first) the true switch the twin stick setup thrust upon us by the PS2. I got that day one as well and taught me how truly insane people can be when it comes to video games. That's a story for another time; However, if you're interested, I will happily share it. It has all the hallmarks of a great story filled with human depravity and even some outright violence...oh yes, the PS2 made people flipping crazy.
