  • Judging by recent history, we should be getting a new Beatles remix and box set in October/November 2023. The smart money is on Rubber Soul, so we thought than rather complain bout it after it has been released, we'd give Apple our ideas and requests as to what fans and collectors would like to see included in a Rubber Soul super deluxe box set.
Using what we know to exist, we suggest tracks and mixes which should be available to the team and offer a very special extras from ourselves. Let us know in the comments what you would like to see in such as set and if you have anything worthy of inclusion. You never know, it may make the cut!

And i think the MMT movie blu ray has the songs with a 5.1 option. And both songs are on the Love soundtrack dvd with a 5.1 option if you buy the cd/dvd package of that.

It's been done by former engineers, now collectors. There's also a two-track mix matching the two-track stereo of the first few albums. Some have tried a synch-up of She Loves You, but they are easily identifiable and obviously, don't sound like the original. The two-track that I have is the real deal and sounds fantastic! I hope , as well, that at least the "Please, Please Me" and "With The Beatles" albums, are given the remixing treatment now available.

The idea behind the mix was associated with the fact that modern (1965) mono turntables could be used to play stereo LPs.
If one plays a stereo LP that has a centered stereo mix on a mono player, it folds down to mono, but the fold-down effect keeps the material that is at the center at a different volume than it would be if one combined two discrete channels. The mix was designed to have the same sound whether it was played on a stereo player or on a mono player with a lightweight tone arm.

Totally agree with all of your thoughts and ideas for the reissue. One other difference in songs on the UK vs. American version of Rubber Soul is "The Word". John's lead vocal is double tracked slightly differently in the verses. If they do offer a mono mix, I'm hoping for one with a little more top end. My copy from the 2009 mono cd boxed set sounds muffled and thick. I've added a significant amount of high end to brighten up the sound when I play it. Also, they need to make a new mono mix of "Day Tripper" to eliminate that bad sound dropout on the master after the guitar solo. It has been repaired on the new stereo versions but was still present on "Mono Masters".

"knowing" that my fellow classmates would be thrilled to hear the new Beatles album... but they weren't. Most of them wanted something to party and dance to, and most of the U.S. version of Rubber Soul did not consist of strong hoofers... EXCEPT "Run For Your Life"! Hi Andrew. In answer to your question about the extreme separation on the stereo Rubber Soul mix: George Martin was at that time trying to please both the stereo buyers and mono buyers - More and more record player cartridges were able to play both mono and stereo (previously you'd have to purchase either one or the other). By keeping all the instruments hard left and right you get a much better balance when playing on a mono player. The further centre a sound is in the stereo field the louder it is, so by keeping them separated you get an all round better balance sound on mono reproducers. This was a period of fast transition and EMI wanted the public to start purchasing stereo records even if they had a mono player. Those who bought the stereo were few and far between, but the extreme separation certainly gave them their money's-worth on their posh stereograms. All the best from the UK!

The Floyd albums do sound terrific In DSD, which is just the best format for music listening imo, but audio fidelity does bring large file sizes and the highest resolution DSDs can be huge. Not that I care personally. The Beatles albums in DSD would be a real treat and, given their importance to musical history, should have been remastered in that format years ago.

Actually, I certainly feel that the 1963 demo of What Goes On clearly does belong on the Rubber Soul box as a related ‘in progress’, documentation also, as being a goodie in itself - for that one alone, I would have bought the box (not that I wouldn’t buy it anyway, but you get my point).
And that absolutely wonderful demo of We Can Work It Out must still exist in full, or what? I do hope so - it would be nice if Sir Paul would agree to include it on the hopefully new deluxe box set! The little we’ve heard is so good that it should be shared - pretty please with sugar on top? If all we’ve heard of it is what’s left, please feel like including it, anyway!
I have an understanding that Macca has an archive of his own that he wants to keep for his personal memories and I can understand him in many ways. Yet, I can also understand us fans too, still hungry for more historical and always wonderful Beatles material, no matter the fidelity.
There’s got to be more home demos, a 1963 live recording on a university with songs not available even on bootlegs comes to mind, and of course an unedited In Spite Of All The Danger etc. I know, those mentioned were not Rubber Soul-related perhaps (with a few demos excepted maybe), but so what?
Personally, I’d love to see that lovely «Beatle Talk» recording from the Think For Yourself-session would be wonderful to include in the future box set as well. If Apple/Universal could include those great ‘bio-interviews’ (which I love them for including) on an earlier archival release, they should do the same with that most entertaining ‘chat recording’ - but unedited, not excluding things like McCartney’s «Been having a shit lately, Megan?», it’s one of the very highlights!
And «The Music Of Lennon/McCartney» and other nice visual material would be top cool, I fully agree with you, Andrew. I guess it’s way over the top to hope for that The Beatles/Universal/Apple could add McCartney’s «Unforgettable» Christmas give-away show as well - I guess this could become a big (and delightful) box! Dreams are free.
Yes, we ‘Socks And Sandals’ are terribly greedy, aren’t we?

With Paul’s announcement that they’ve completed another John Lennon demo I think they’re releasing something Anthology related this year. When they get around to Magical Mystery Tour they definitely have to include the four Beatles songs that appeared for the first time on Yellow Submarine. It would probably be on an EP but I hope the vinyl version will be a 45 like in the Let It Be box. It’s much easier to store than a 7” that’s floating around.

As an American who grew up on the US version, I would really like to see a true mono (not a Capitol fold down) version of the US album included as a bonus disc. That way they wouldn’t have to put much effort into it, and it could give the super deluxe set some girth.
I do have my fingers crossed that there are home demos that might make their way to this set. But I feel like with so few outtakes, they may as well include everything, including the tape of the group working out their harmonies.
As for video elements, I’ve been seeing some high rez scans with what sounds like remastered audio of some of their concerts on RUclips pop up here and there. Maybe an infamous concert, along with television appearances and promo videos? Or if there’s any video of them in the studio?
I certainly hope that better attention to detail will go into the packaging as well.

Rubber Soul, is one of my favorite albums cause it was the beginning of the Beatles creative song writing and this Lp proves that they were going in a different direction.
Now as far as making a box set of Rubber Soul, I'm all in favor of it because, since they had already made box sets of the later LPs from Revolver to Let It Be, with the exceptions of Magical Mystery Tour and the Yellow Submarine, I believe that they should make one for this album.
Now what I would include in this box set, is a full remastered album, an album filled with outtakes, an ep album with at least six songs, the 2 songs being the double a single of Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out and the other four songs, from the Rubber Soul Lp. So to give a little example of what the ep should be, it'll be like this
    Rubber Soul Ep: Side One
    1. Day Tripper
    2. We Can Work It Out
    3. Drive My Car
    Rubber Soul Ep: Side Two
    1. Nowhere Man
    2. In My Life
    3. If I Needed Someone
Now some may differ as far as the ep is concerned, but this is just my opinion of what the ep should be.
Also, I would like to have a little documentary on the Rubber Soul Lp sorta like mini-documentary from the 2009 stereo box set, but with more depth.

My out-there idea for a Rubber Soul boxset would be to have TWO stereo mixes! Why? The first would be the “modern” remix keeping in line with all the other remixed albums so far (loud, compressed, too much bass, de-mixed, etc), while the second would be a more “classical” remix.
Rubber Soul is the one album in the Beatles’ catalogue that has indisputably needed a remix from day one, because of its reversion back to the extreme instruments/vocal panning when it wasn’t technically necessary. So the purpose of a “classical” remix would be to give us the mix we could’ve gotten in 1965, more in line with the mixes for AHDN, For Sale and Help! No de-mixing or other gimmicks, as those would be reserved for the “modern” mix.
Rubber Soul is the big one I’ve always wanted to hear remixed properly, and I’ve accepted that Giles Martin’s approach to remixing just isn’t for me, so it’d be a shame if this album (again, the only one whose stereo mix could’ve actually been done better back then just with what’s on the 4-track) went without a good-faith remix that actually tries to respect the sounds and methodology of the period.
