So interesting to see Ferrell in his natural state without the comedic flairs - I think this is one of the few interviews where he is authentically himself
There was a guy on Australian TV many years ago called Andrew Denton. His show was called "Enough Rope" and his interview style was amazing. The stuff he would get out of people with some light humour and just letting them talk still boggles my mind.
For sure. So often their role on these shows is to “entertain”. It’s refreshing to see them actually open up, and be incredibly authentic. I love funny Will Ferrell as much as the next guy, but it’s great just to hear him speak.
Elf was one of the few movies the entire 60 person pod watched when I was in jail. It was wholesome to be laughing at a goofy movie with cartel bosses, murderers and kidnappers.
My entire family quotes "bye buddy, hope you find your dad". ALL the time when someone leaves. My dad will even say it to me when I leave, which just makes it funnier somehow
That is hands down the best scene in the movie. That, and worlds best cup of coffee. Because now everyone thinks of that when they see “worlds best coffee” which is in a lot of places
The whole premise of him believing himself to be an elf, his beliefs about Christmas,., cracks me up every time.. when he argues with his manager, fake Santas, his fight with the tiny author.., Buddy’s innocence cracks me up at every turn!
Family friend of mine happened to be on set while they were filming elf and caught a quick glimpse and essentially told us “ooof don’t know what this is supposed to be but it’s going to be a mess” and I completely understand how seeing one scrap of this film out of context could give you that impression. It’s funny to see will himself felt that way during production.
On Netflix there is a tv series that’s called “The Holiday Movies That Made Us”. And in it they have an episode about Elf and it tells the entire story of how Elf came together from the producers to the cinematographer to the writer. Like how idk he wasn’t as big a star as I thought he was at that time.
I thought he was already a big star too when I saw Elf and Old School. I guess it was just kind of inevitable in my mind because I had been watching him on SNL for so long and other SNL cast members in movies were so big at the time like Sandler and the like.
Dude, Elf is a movie we saw in cinemas when it came out and still we quote even if it's not Christmas. Anytime anybody says 10am in the house "Santa's coming.." "SAAANTAAA!" It's a full blown modern classic. Love this interview, too. Mr. Ferrell at his most honest. What a great. Peace for 2021 everybody.
I love the Elf channel every December. Because every channel is the Elf channel. And as soon as I come home I'll see it on one of the channels and have to watch it the rest of it. I love when he burps. And when he yells when Santa is coming 'Oh my God Santa!'
Elf has plenty of crude jokes lol. But yeah, I feel you. Most films are rated PG-13 or R these days, and the ones rated PG are often just vapid soulless cash grabs.
I love how honest Will Ferrell is in this interview. We can see the more thoughtful side of him here. Great interview. Will Ferrell is one of my favorite comedians and I learned alot about storytelling through Blake Snyder's analysis of the film Elf surprisingly. All in all, high marks.
Elf,Christmas Vacation and It's a Wonderful Life..that's the trifecta of holiday movies for me..occasionally throwing A Christmas Story into the rotation
I think a big part of why this movie worked was that you had to believe that Buddy's innocence and sweetness was sincere. Will Ferrell has an inherent sweetness to him that came through in this character, so that he was hilarious but also heartwarming at the same time.
Elf is truly one of the greatest movies of all time. I've never met someone who didn't love it and that's rare. Movies never appeal to all ages, cultures, views, etc.
Interesting in how this movie worked, also how the lesser known moments filming it worked more than the ones with the crew laughing - as it's said that Jon Favreau didn't get on with Will Ferrell, and that's one of the reasons why there's no sequel. (Similar case for the Scrooged too, maybe my fave Christmas movie.)
Tbh I think with comedy it's always a never-know situation because it's so subjective but in the case of Elf it's a holiday movie (of which there are only so many good ones) and it has universal appeal for families from kids to adults.
Will Ferrell is such an interesting looking person. It is even more obvious in black and white. As someone with a fine arts degree, he really looks like an artist's model.
I think it was a complete turning point for Will Ferrell with Elf. He was perfectly casted for that movie. It was the first time in his career, where I thought, hmm, this is a great movie and he really nailed it. Before Elf, I think most of his movies were hit and miss. This one got it all right. And it led to movies like Stranger Than Fiction.
My late uncle was a cameraman for the Godfather. He told me the crew thought the film was going to be awful and was shocked how good it was after editing, etc.
So interesting to see Ferrell in his natural state without the comedic flairs - I think this is one of the few interviews where he is authentically himself
You said that perfectly...that's what I was trying to say to my hub.

I recommend Will’s appearance on Marc Maron’s podcast as well as Conan O’Brien’s podcast, for the same reason.
Actually, this is him acting.
This is one of the very few interviewers who lets his guests talk and doesn't just interrupt constantly.
Like Stern!. I know what you were thinking
There was a guy on Australian TV many years ago called Andrew Denton. His show was called "Enough Rope" and his interview style was amazing. The stuff he would get out of people with some light humour and just letting them talk still boggles my mind.
Like Brendan Schuab when he constantly speaks over MMA fighters
you need to stop watching joe rogan and late night shows then
Norton Graham also is great with his interviews.
Elf is one of the best Christmas movies ever
The best one I know
Right behind Diehard!!
It is the best Christmas movie ever.
Agreed. I watch it every holiday season.
@@apriliarider6072 and eyes wide shut haha
This is the only show where you can see comedians actually being serious.
For sure. So often their role on these shows is to “entertain”. It’s refreshing to see them actually open up, and be incredibly authentic. I love funny Will Ferrell as much as the next guy, but it’s great just to hear him speak.
Marc Maron's podcast too. idk if you'd consider that a show though.
Comedy hype
Especially knowing that most comedians like Will Ferrell who are always in character are also really smart people.
This or most podcasts sure
Every year it seems to grow. This movie appears to be a classic now
I agree! This movie is in the likes of home alone and Christmas Vacation

What a dear story. Bless you.
"Bye, Buddy. Hope you find your dad!" "Bye, Mr. Narwal!" Something about that scene just always makes me burst into laughter.
My sister and I often quote that scene whenever we say bye to each other 😂😂

I crack up when the snowman says “at least you have a daddy! I was just rolled up and left…”🤣😂🤣
The duet "Baby it's cold outside" was awesome.
We watch Elf almost every Christmas.
Several times
I forgot this time 😟
Same with my family lol
It’s a tradition at my family’s house. Everybody gets together we watch elf and Christmas vacation.
Elf is full of joy and wonder, and that's why everyone loves it. When the crowd is singing by the park, I cry - every time.
I’m crying because you said that.
I love that movie because to me it’s heartwarming, humorous and original
This is the first time I’ve seen him not be a character.
Best scene is when Buddy meets Peter Dinklage and thinks he is an actual elf
Michael Holmgaard it’s brilliant!
Call me an elf one more time!
He’s an angry elf
Must be a South Pole Elf.
Does Santa know you are here?
"You sit on a throne of lies." Cracks me up every time.
Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart, Ed Asner, Zoey Deschanel, what a cast, what a great movie!
The scene that cracks me up every time is when he jumps on the tree. I don't know why.
That is hands down the best scene in the movie. That, and worlds best cup of coffee. Because now everyone thinks of that when they see “worlds best coffee” which is in a lot of places
Seeing Will come in to frame and immediately onto the tree is just hilarious.
The whole premise of him believing himself to be an elf, his beliefs about Christmas,., cracks me up every time.. when he argues with his manager, fake Santas, his fight with the tiny author.., Buddy’s innocence cracks me up at every turn!
Elf had an exceptional cast though, with great short performances by Sedaris, Newhart and especially Dinklage.
Yes!!! And many others - even Radioman (Mary Steenburgen, James Caan).
goddamn you
take your upvote and get out
And the great Ed Asner!
Faizon Love was also excellent, and didn't even get proper credits! "Wanda" hahaha.
Why is this black and white?
Just watched Elf last night with my now adult children...we still laugh just as hard as we did the first time we watched it years ago🎄
He’s on my Vision Board he’s is the GOAT. Cannot wait to work for him.
This and Jim Carreys Grinch are the best 2 Xmas movies in the last 25 years.
The 1966 version is still the best one.
This is the only time I’ve ever seen him just being himself and not doing a bit.
“Ohh piece is candy, ooo Piece is Candy, OOHhhh PIECE OF CANDY!”
I watch Elf every year, such a treat. It deserves the popularity it’s getting. It’s a classic now🌟✨

After this came Anchorman launching him again.
Yeah the role was actually written for Jim Carrey. Glad he got to do it instead.
Awesome to see Mr. Ferrell talking about this classic! Its crazy how many laughs this dude has given me and my friends with all his movies
Elf has become a family MUST every Christmas season!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼👏🏽👏🏽🎁🤩🎄😆
It’s nice that will was really respectful in this interview
This man is a treasure
I don’t think I’ve ever seen him act normal 😂
I have watched elf a ton of times and the tree topper scene kills me, each and every single time. My favorite Christmas 🎥

Loved the part about the Central Park Rangers' controversial conduct at the recent Simon & Garfunkel concert.

Elf is amazing, its so rare to have a family friendly movie thats wholesome and funny.
This is the first time I’ve ever seen Will Ferrell not being “on”. Refreshing and humbling.
W.Ferrell should have gotten an Oscar for it. His nuances were amazing.

Really neat to see this after watching the making of it on that series on Netflix!
It's crazy that when an actor is so good at their job you forget that they're just a regular person when they interact in real life

I didn't think it was possible to make a new 'classic'' Christmas movie. Elf gives me hope!
Elf is right up there with Christmas Story for me.
Will Ferrell and John Favreau really made a weird concept work well
Mann, loved Elf and I just saw the thing on Netflix about it a couple days ago. I love it even more.

Elf 'works' because we've all been 8 years old and will ferrell perfectly captured the essence of that innocence throughout the movie.
