WARNING! I LOVE RE2. This video is not about not liking RE2. I like RE2. I like RE2 very much. I like RE2. I like making these videos on little side topics. There's nothing major I wanna cover right now, so I hope you guys are enjoying me just speaking my mind about stuff. This is one of my favorite life stories to tell.
Do you know why Capcom said that RE2 was the masterpiece that turn RE into a pop culture people know and love today? You complain about the game being easy, have you tried hard mode RE2? while RE3 is actually a lot easier. You talk about explore and puzzle in RE3? Dude the game is about play hide and seek with Nemesis the entire game, easy puzzles and a boring storyline. What did you really explore in a fake "big city" map it gave you where in fact it has a lot fewer segment than RE2? You complain about it being an action game then praise RE3 the real action game? Dude there's no game is easier than RE3 it has auto dodge ffs. Just because you're scared of big nemmy it made you forget that the rest of the game is just easy mode for you? RE2 is not just a game, it's a unique horror culture that stands out among all others. The problem with you is that you only see it as a game, that's why you have no idea how amazing it was. All you care about is the stupid difficulty (even though you didn't even try hard mode), you don't even care about the unique concepts it created. And you even bring that boring RE 1.5 into the discussion? RE2 has Best lore, best characters, best music, best creature designs, best sounds, best maps (RPD and lab)... what do you have to criticize it? difficulty? too much action? I play RE2 hard mode when I was a kid and it made the hard mode in RE3 look like a big pile of trash. Stick to FPS action game pls, don't talk like you're a true survival horror fan let alone RE fan.
Do you know why both RE3 and RE3R got shit on after being released? Because of the lack of interesting storylines and new horror concepts. Like tell me what the **** did you get from that game? Oh a female supercop who somehow wears like a sl** instead of a tactical outfit playing cat and mouse game with a big tenticle monster who is basically an upgrade version of Mr.X? the game marks the end of Raccoon city and look at its boring-ass storyline. Ppl call it RE2's DLC for a good reason. Ppl say CV is the true RE3 for a good reason. Anyway, what does FPS action fan like u know about survival horror? Do you know how many iconic characters RE2 created? Leon Claire Ada Sherry Hunk Birkin Mr.X Licker. How many iconic characters re3 created? Just 1. Let that sink in.
@@TheAnhphuong92 The PC and Dreamcast versions both have the harder difficulty level, the PC version requires modifications to function correctly, the Dreamcast version is no longer available for purchase and can be quite costly if located. Apologies, but Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica surpass Resident Evil 2 as a better game in the series.
You just didn't know the strat. Best strategy would have been to coast at best. They leave you alone, and you don't have to try that hard. Instead you put a big magnifying glass on yourself. Live and learn @@underthemayo
ngl making an 8 year old go through an increadibly easy test for 3 hours, just to cause mental exhaustion, and then giving possibly difficult questions at the end, where you already lose motivation is such a scammy thing to do. it's pretty obvious they just wanted to prove a point to your dad that you need their program, so they can get money off your parents, and obviously it worked. Heck that strategy would work on some adults.
Yeah whatever this was, it was a scam, 100%. I bet even in a blue moon when a kid managed to pull through and ace the whole test they probably still told the parents some bullshit like "they did okay on the test but we still have concerns". Anything to sucker some 90s parents into wasting thousands of dollars to torment their child.
I begged my mam to get me Resi 1 for Christmas after playing it in my friends dad's house. Then on Christmas morning i ripped open the wrapping paper to a brand new Resi 1 directors cut.... That music still haunts me.
I'm so pissed that that soundtrack still remains on the game. I was pumped to see RE finally on the Playstation Store. I died inside when I saw that it was Director's Cut.
@@robertharper3114 Yes! OG RE3 is the best and while I like Leon, I hate that they sidelined Jill so hard in favor of him and Chris (whom I think is pretty boring)! I'm glad RE9 will have both Jill and Leon as the leads. I just hope it's better than VII and Village and Jill acts more like herself pre-RE3remake.
i feel you on the whole schooling thing, dude. my parents tried several times to put me into private schools, the kind where you need to pass a test with higher marks to get into, but i'd always rush through the tests on purpose because i didn't want to be there taking a test, i didn't want to change schools, and i definitely did not want to wear a stupid uniform xD
My mom did this to me when I was 15. Despite rushing the entire test on purpose, somehow I still maneged to pass on it and ended up in the school. Oh boy, those were the worst days of my high school. At least the food was good.
Along with the original "Left 4 Dead" demo, the RE2 demo is probably the most hours I have ever spent on just 15-20 minutes of gameplay. I played it more than the RE Director's Cut it was bundled with.
Thanks for sharing Mayo, this was a nice meditation on the same period of time I grew up - renting games and the PS1 era. RE1 is my fave of the originals
Ive played the X version a couple times and I find it makes the story corny because Chris somehow has all the time in the world to defeat Alexia with the Linear Launcher+use an elevator to get back to the getaway Jet.
all im gonna say is one time I faked "not feeling well" so I can skip baseball and finish re1. I needed to know what happens after the snake boss fight ASAP!!
It's wild that you bring up that RE1 strategy guide in gamepro. I read that exact guide over and over again before i even had a PS1. Because the camera angles were all so different in all the screenshots, my mind flat out couldn't comprehend how a person would control a game like that. It looked to me like you were controlling a character in real 3d space.
Your story made me cry man, something similar happened to me, my father sent me to psychological evaluation for iq in high school because of bad grades in 1 subject (this was actually a legitimate psychology place, the test took less time and were really challenging to some extent in diffetent areas). I didn't hate the place, but the idea (or at least the way I interpreted it at the time) of my father sending me there just to humiliate me. In the end the psychologist found out that I was a normal kid and that the problem was my father and the teacher and the way they approached the learning process, he got mad at her because it was his and the teacher's fault and not mine. Luckily with effort and communication with the teacher I was able to pass the subject and the following year I finally listened to a friend who loves horror to play resident evil 1 (it was free on the ps store and I had never played a horror game because I was somewhat traumatized by watching horror movies or horror games on the xbox at a young age by family members) and I loved it, It was really scary, but it kept me company during my recovery from dental surgery and I have great nostalgia for it, it made me appreciate horror in narratives and how it can make us feel relatable to the media creators/ friends that like it and their most dark and honest times. I love this type of personal content, it makes me feel relatable and not alone. I thought i was the only one with this kind of experience. It might not be what your channel is about or what gets more views but i really appreciete it and would love to see more of this tipe of videos, thanks for it mayo!
I'm a contrarian when I don't like what everyone likes (RE Village) and I'm a shill when I like what everyone likes (RE4 Rename). It just depends on if you personally agree at the time.
I'm playing re outbreak file 2 rn for 1st time, can't say I'm enthralled by the single player experience necessarily, gotta play the multiplayer ig, since that's the main focus tho still I was expecting more from the single player, I love the art direction of this Game.
Grit your teeth through the crappy AI and unlock Lone Wolf mode. Then play it like a normal RE and you should have a great time. Online mode was top tier fun, though.
Your story gave me some nostalgia since it's pretty similar to how I was when I was a kid. My taste in games wasn't very broad back then, but I was still always thinking about whatever new video game I got or was going to come out. Naturally I didn't do well in school either, and was even held back a grade in high school, but I also had other issues going on at home I won't get into. I haven't really felt that excited about a game in a long time though. Back then a new game was like pioneering into new territory or something, where possibilities were endless. But now it feels like everything has been done or can be done, and I'm more so looking for the right combination of elements that make up a video game rather than something truly new.
4:19 Correction: There were two Director's Cut, one that keeps everything the same but adds difficulty options and the second (that has the zombie on the cover) is the Dualshock edition, that one is were they changed the music
That connection you had with your sister when going through RE1 is special. That is amazing. Different moments in life make us react to things that may sound contrarian to others at times. I remember my pediatric doctor telling me I should play Zelda. At the time, I wasn't into the fantasy of sword fighting, medieval stuff, etc. I just was going to have a miserable time... or so I thought. But playing a game I found disappointing at a young age because of something I went through? I don't remember such a case... except Grand Theft Auto Vice City. My brother and a friend were just having a blast even if, granted, we were way too young to play. But GOD did I find it boring, nonsensical and frankly obscene at the time. At the time, I was going through the worst years of high school myself and I wanted to escape from everything, even from love.
That "exam" is literally emotional/psychological abuse. As a kid with a learning disability, I went through some similar experiences. I was essentially thrown away, relegated to the fucked up alternative school system. Just like you, I came to distrust authority figures as a result of this, became extremely rebellious and started to get into trouble a lot. They took my rebelliousness as a confirmation that I belonged in the alternative school system, not realizing they were creating the problem they thought they were trying to solve. The way schools deal with kids with learning disabilities is appalling. That was almost twenty years ago, but I don't think the system has changed much.
I would ever call it abuse. I believe my dad, an academic, didn't know how to deal with his rebellious son who was going in very different directions. His knee-jerk reaction was to send me for a test, instead of just sitting down with me and talking about what was wrong. That's how he was. Now, the company.. I can't believe that they were acting in good faith, thinking they could apply a 4 hour exam on the weekend to children and use that as a judgement of their intelligence and capacity to understand. I think it was a setup to fail so I would get enrolled in their program.
Resident evil 2 was the first RE game I played and never made it past the beginning because I didn’t know how to play. So I got eaten by the zombies and had nightmares about them ever since and never played the game again. I also watched the resident evil movie before playing and was traumatize by JD’s death.
I think we downplay how much life circumstances affect our appreciation of different games. I've never been a huge COD guy, but I'm currently back in college for a science degree, and one of the semesters was particularly loaded with challenging classes. I had to minimize the mental exertion I put into other activities, including video games. So, instead of playing something intellectually engaging like Frostpunk, or just plain difficult like Donkey Kong Country 2 (the two games I had been playing prior), I decided to boot up the Modern Warfare 2 remaster. And I'll tell ya, coming home from an exhausting lab or exam and booting up that campaign was genuinely some of the best times I've had with a game. The simple Michael Bay-style rollercoaster was just the right balance my workload at the time. I enjoyed the game far more then than I did when I played it for the first time as a teen. Now I'd be lying if I didn't place it somewhere amongst my favorite games. But if I had instead revisited it when I was feeling fresh and looking for a truly stimulating gaming experience, I'd probably have dismissed it as for being typical COD schlock.
I respect your reasoning. On top of you being forced to attend a program you didnt want to be in, having become a Master of RE1, its not surprising you found RE2 disappointing the way you did after all you went through. I'm a fan of the second one, but even I can admit that in terms of gameplay, its basically RE1 just expanded a bit further. Mr X only appeared during scripted events which kinda ruins his horror factor when you already know to expect him. In contrast, RE3 expanded on the stalker mechanic even more with Nemesis, while Mr X would leave you alone once you entered a new room, for Nemesis, a simple door wasnt gonna stop him from getting you as he actually followed you to the next area. There were also new maneuvers to learn as well in both the dodging and shoving system that were introduced as well
I agree about RE3. That game was a masterpiece and I feel like Mikami was jealous that the new developers were able to take a side story and turn into a phenomenal game. Kobayashi did a great job directing Nemesis .
It's scary how close your experience mirrors mine. I rented RE1 for a month straight and didn"t have a memory card, so a death really was game over. My best friend and I were so disappointed by RE2s lack of difficulty we each returned the game (I remember seeing the original RE1.5 trailer on a Playstation underground disc and it was terrifying seeing how the outside world would now be affected by the events of RE1)
I had a similar situation. I failed 7th grade after RE1 came out. Bad family problems, death, etc. And I never got into RE2, but loved 1 and 3… damn shame.
Gotta love millennials talk about how their childhood was so great in the 90s. I wish I grew up in the 90s. I hate being Gen Z, fcking lego ninjago and minecraft was my childhood.🤮 Well, at least I'm not a Gen Alpha skibidi toilet kid. 🤷🏼♂️
I feel sorry for Gen Z. Gen Z has no future, all they have is the past, our past. That's why they clamor for 'remakes' of games that came out when I was a kid.
Being Gen Z isn't so bad. I mean, is Gen Alpha gonna be able to say they grew up with Half Life, GTA, Counter Strike and other mid-2000s classics? Didn't think so
I had a really similar thing happen in 2015 when I had just gotten a new xbox and both my Grandma and my childhood dog were slowly dying. I just could not enjoy games for a while. It took years before I could pick up and enjoy games like the Halo MCC and Rare Replay.
RE2 was my first RE game. I was aware of RE1, but I didn't have a playstation so I didn't care too much. Some kid at school had an RE2 guide book that I fell in love with, I loved seeing the art for it. I traded him some yoyo that I had bought from the yoyo performance thing that had been to the school (anyone else remember that shit?) just so I could have the book at home and enjoy it more, despite still not having a Playstation. Then the dickhead kid or his friend stole it back. This lead to me convincing mom to buy me another guidebook, but this one was different and had even more art in it. I eventually got a Playstation and I'm pretty sure RE2 was one of, if not the, first game I got for it.
It's interesting hoe much the external experiences we have around games, especially during childhood, end up forming our relationships with them in unexpected ways. It reminds me of how, even though I do have plenty of critiques of Ocerina of Time, the game's role in my childhood was so formative that when that title screen music plays, I always lose a sense of critical scrutiny about the game that doesn't re-emerge until I hit the water temple ha.
It's not just childhood it can be in adulthood as well with specific games. I always loved Fallout, and New Vegas especially that I was always looking forward in playing it. Then reality struck about how much of the game is unoptimized and needed to be modded to a playable state. At that point, as much as I love the franchise and New Vegas I am not gonna sit through that to have a good time. There are also games disliked by others because it reminds them of a turbulent time. Even if that game is really good.
its easy to forget how much the growing experience of a person can impact their enjoyment of the games they like. for me RE2 being the best of the classics was a no brainer, but that's probably because it was the first RE game that I actually beat (I saw my older brothers play RE1 but it scared me too much for me to play it at the time, being a very small kid, there was a big age gap between me and them) and I beat it by working together with my younger brother, and without a memory card because we lost it after our older brothers moved out. so I essentially had the RE1 experience you had with your sister, but with RE2 and my lil brother. at the end of the day its not just experiencing great games, but experiencing them at the right time in your life. also about RE3: literally my least favorite of the og 3 because I played it much later in life when my standards for dodge mechanics had already been spoiled by later games. again, timing matters lol
@@lucaseduardo9097 I swear if there was ever someone who is soo insufferable when it comes videogame opinions its this guy. I don't think he's ever had fun playing a game in his life...
@@Jaydogg222 I'm convinced something terrible happened right as he was transitioning into his teen years. There's no way someone can organically become so bitter without a major, life defining incident in their childhood.
@@Jaydogg222 yeah, everything is bad or a failure or has more flaws than the prequel.... I dont even get why he still play games if he clearly doesnt enjoy videogames
The first 4 minutes about you and your sister playing and then the father evaluating you…. Resident evil 2 was never going to stand a chance with you was it? As much as I disagree from a player perspective, I cannot nor would I fault your opinion on RE2 after that initial anecdote
Just playing OG RE2 after 20 Years of "OG Racoon City Zombie Outbrake Hybernation" and now this UtM video lol while RE2 has Flaws(too Easy), like no "Stupid C-Movie Charm like RE1 " and is not as Modern as Re3 Nemesis, it has STILL the Best Area of all RE Games(RPD Police Station), Best Soundtrack, Introduced us to the *Stalker Type* Enemy, Best Athmo and had the Most incredible Ports a RE Game EVER had(RE2 on N64 anyone!?) mAn Btw. Heard your Story, like often in Life do NOT blame the Game for your *Problems* in teen Ages
I won the lottery when it came to parents. They thought the amount of homework they gave me around that age was ridiculous and encouraged letting me just be a kid. They got me a Gamecube when it came out and all the Resident Evil games including 2 and my favorite Zero. All they asked was get my schoolwork done first and then I could play what I wanted for as long as I wanted and if I kept up good grades theyd buy me a new game every month.
I had very similar experience as you did and I feel the same way about Resident Evil 1, 2 & 3 as you! I was so happy when you started to talk about RE3! Playing that game over and over was experience I will never forget.
The first RE game I played was RE2, the first time I ever saw it was when I was 7 years old at a family christmas party back in 98, me and my brother went into a room of this teenager who was playing RE2, we saw the section where Mr.X walked towards a security camera and smashed it, as soon as we good home we asked our father to buy us the game. The first time we played it we didn't have a memory card, we reached very far in the game but wound up dying, so we asked our father for a memory card. We would invite friends over to play this "scary game", I remember one kid got real scared by it. Personally it's my favorite outside of the Outbreak series which I think are the best. We knew this kid who had leukemia who had a big collection of PS1 games, so we borrowed from him RE1 and a few other games, while we lent him RE2 and some other games. We immediately played RE1 but it was very slow and sluggish compared to RE2, it wasn't nearly as good but it was a fun game nonetheless, when RE3 came out I felt a bit disappointment as it wasn't as good as RE2 and felt shorter with no additional characters/scenarios, but my brother and his friends enjoyed Mercenaries mode and would play that a lot. We tried getting our copy of RE2 back but the kid we lent the game to passed away (RIP), so we wound up buying RE2 again but for N64, which was an excellent choice as that version is incredible and has a lot of extra content.
Haven't watched this video yet. Don't know if you're just trying to stir shit up again, but what I will say about RE2 is that it is a bit overrated. The police station area is fantastic, but my god, the sewer section has some of the blandest level design of the entire series and the secret lab section is just boring. I think people always like to remember the first few hours of RE2 when talking about how great it is, but forget about how poor it's final third is. The more time that passes, the more I think RE3 is the best classic RE. Anyways, now to watch the video to see if my thoughts even partially align with yours. Update: Watched the video. Sorry you had to go through all that...Sewer section is still shit though.
It's not overrated, it was nothing we've ever seen when it came out. Sure, it's easy to armchair intellectual about it 30 years later, but back then? There were no cutscenes like RE2, no scope of it and everything felt "epic". It was experience. It's like playing Mass Effect 2 for the first time, and playing it again 15 years later when you can see it's flaws. But playing ME2 first time around in 2010? Oh boy. Also, this guy always whines and hates on something, he's legit boring. I don't even watch his videos anymore just dump him dislike because I am 1000% sure he's just whining about something. It's like those goth kids in high school who think they were way too cool for hating on everything.
I got my Playstation for WCW Nitro. To be more specific, I got it because I used to play World Tour or Revenge a lot with my friend on his N64. So, I assumed Nitro would be similar. It is not. I did play the crap out of RE2 when it came out. I still remember the commercial for it to this day. And I was really disappointed when Remake didnt have Irons say "im not letting anyone leave my town. Everyones gonna die!!" A line burned into my mind because of the commercial.
Boy did I laugh at "lion, puma, tiger, airplane." In all seriousness thought hat's, that's a crappy experience. Reminds me of how there are certain games I can't, or couldn't, play because I had played them while very sick. Took me ages to finish Bioshock.
Great video man, really cool to hear how your connection formed to these games as a kid. RE3 is also my favorite of the original trilogy for the reasons you mentioned. It's such a shame that Capcom didn't give it even a fraction of the love that RE2 and RE4 received in their remakes.
Aw man I felt that when you said you played the game up until a certain point. My first console was the PS1 and I remember having a pizza hut demo disc that had like 5 games, back in those days they felt like a treat. Little old me thought those were full games. Obviously I had played other games that weren't demos and they were awesome. It wasn't until the near end of the PS2 era that I learned that memory cards were a thing, this whole time I thought those slots were for ventilation for the console, the things you believed as a kid, huh? Hard to imagine that as a little dude I was locked in to play these games raw and attempting to finish them in a day with no saves.
Resident Evil Director's Cut will always be my favorite because exploring the mansion and solving the mystery for the first time was such a huge part of the experience. Once you know it's just Umbrella and the virus again it's still a good time but never quite the same.
i have similar experience, og RE2 was my introduction to the series even those i didn’t play it my self but it got me hooked, then started playing RE1 years later, but first time watching my uncle play RE3 i remember i was blown away by how you can go up stairs without any restrictions, and on top of it all Nemesis was in it, made me feel nervous all the time, over all these years i played RE3 more than RE2, its my favorite among the classic’s, good story on the personal side Mayo, always love your RE videos
I have a funny story too. Coming from SNES, I remember clearly my cousin talking about a zombie game he was playing on a console I haven’t heard before. My zombie idea was that “zombie ate my neighbors” game. So I thought this game would be fun too, but it turned out to be one of the most frightening experiences ever as a kid. As I grew older, I saw resident evil as a challenge. Something like “c’mon, u’re not a kid anymore” and I dared myself to finish the first game. Still scared as hell. After sometime, I finished the RE4 on my ps2 and finally took the courage the beat the classics. Nowadays, Resident Evil is my favorite franchise and survival horror, my favorite genre.
I completely get you bro, I had a similar experience with Bloodborne. It's undeniably one of FromSoftware's greatest games, but I happened to play it at one of the worst points in my entire life. I was halfway through the game when I was fired from my job after being bullied by coworkers for months and unfortunately, HR took the side of the bullies... It was the worst time of my life and the less said about it, the better. Unfortunately I can't help but remember that awful experience when I play Bloodborne, which I acknowledge is no fault of the game itself. I wish I could erase those memories and replay Bloodborne fresh, now that I've got my life together and am happy with a wife and kids. It never ceases to amaze me though, the ability to replay old games after long periods of time and have distant memories return from when we first played them. I know I'm not the only one who's experienced this phenomenon.
RE 1,2,3 were the PEAK 😢! None of the sequels come even close. For me, RE4 ruined the series and brought us where we are today and that's because Mikami mistakenly thought RE1 remake failed because he released it on Gamecube when all it's playerbase had bought a PS2 (I mean who would've thougth the series would've been on kid console).
As much as I love the classics, many games got influenced by RE4 even a good amount of content that was scrapped ended up becoming their own games(devil may cry). Re4 may not be the best RE game but it’s still a masterpiece, and the remake was great as well. Tho I respect everyone’s preferences.
I'm conflicted about RE4, because imo it definitely ruined the RE series (at least what i loved about the OG games and Remake/RE 0/Outbreak), but without it, one of my all time favourite games wouldn't have been created, Dead Space. RE4 is a very good game, addictive, fun, intense, and it somehow successfully straddles a line between atmospheric buttcheek clinching action horror and bombastic goofy ridiculous comedy. It's certainly a unique game. However it has many flaws and all that's unique and good about it unravels by the 3rd act during the island missions (although the regenerators redeem some of this areas failings). It gets boring and repetitive. The tank controls dont hold up for an ots view game. Leon's general standing aim, swaying all over the place when you're just aiming straight ahead is atrocious for supposed a "special forces" guy. I expect some natural sway but jeez lay off the Whisky...alpha. Anyway, RE4 is a blessing and a curse on the gaming world, without it, no Dead Space, but with it, we've got a landscape of ots action shooter typecast layouts for almost every AAA game, and the RE franchise is totally removed from what made it originally stand out.
The cinematography of the original three is absolutely one of the highest points of praise us original fans have for the OG survival horror is resident evil!! There's just something about not being able to see what you are about to walk into that makes it extra scary, because of the cinematography and using that to the games advantage to spook, you was truly next level back then and I wish they would still make some games like that now... I can play the originals over and over and over and have fun every time whereas the new games after I've ran through them a few times I'm pretty much bored with it
(Large comment ahead) Kind of different, but I feel the slightest bit similarly when it comes to the Tomb Raider franchise. The first Tomb Raider game is atmospheric, lonely, with almost no human enemies, and even then, they are few and far between. It used its camera and level design to hide traps and enemies, building tension and fear, and it had a survival-horror-esque limited save system on the PlayStation 1 version of the game, which made death punishing and terrifying. There were also the end levels in Atlantis, with textures and enemies that wouldn't feel out of place in Silent Hill. The levels in Tomb Raider 1 were amazing, with pretty much every single one of them having at least 1 memorable stand out moment or "woah" location/set piece. Exploration was rewarded with secret health pickups, ammo, and items needed to progress further. It was a near perfect blend of adventure, horror, exploration, and atmosphere. Then there is Tomb Raider 2. I'm not here to tell you that "Tomb Raider 2 is the worst Tomb Raider game evarrr!!!1" or even that it isn't as good as the first one. They are trying to do completely different things, and in my opinion, they succeed at what they were aiming for fairly well. Tomb Raider 2 was trying to be an action-adventure game that felt bigger than the first one, with a blockbuster story and tone like Terminator 2 or Die Hard. Tomb Raider 2 also arguably has some of the best level design in all of classic Tomb Raider, looping around itself in ways nothing short of genius, and the puzzles are arguably better as well compared to the first one. Lara herself also feels more fleshed out compared to in the original, with elements of Femme-Fatale and James Bond flavorings to Lara now, compared to her just being a sassy, confident, self-motivated British treasure hunter. The problem that I have with Tomb Raider 2 is that it doesn't feel like a continuation of the first Tomb Raider game, with improvements, quality of life changes, and better level design. It changes things up so dramatically that it feels vastly different in tone and sometimes even in spirit from the first, and it completely throws out things that I loved about the first game. The story of Tomb Raider 2 isn't about you, the Tombs, and finding an ancient artifact, now it's a blockbuster action movie plot where you have to race against the Mafia to collect an artifact of great power before they do. The first game was super atmospheric, lonely, and infrequently used enemies to keep you on your toes. So naturally, the second one changes this to feel way more populated and largely throws away the lonely feeling. Now you're in Venice in broad daylight fighting swarms of human enemies. Now you're on a bad guy HQ boat with lots of enemies. Now you're in the Himalayas on a snowmobile in broad daylight fighting other guys on snowmobiles while a techno pop version of the main theme plays. Now you're in a monastery crawling with friendly monks and bad guy mafia people. Yes, there are moments where it slows down and more closely feels like the original, like when you are exploring an old, wrecked ship looking for the seraph item, or one of the final levels where you are exploring the Temple of Xian and it actually feels like a Tomb, but the majority of the game just doesn't feel like this. Also, replacing the lonely feeling of the original with a more actiony feel by adding tons more enemies means that Tomb Raider 2 focuses much more heavily on combat, which is easily the weakest aspect of the original games. A lot of the horror from the first game is also completely gone, not only because the atmosphere and environments are way less creepy, and not only because most of the supernatural enemies are not as scary (its slower ghosts and living statues now, compared to previously with mummies that dash at you and explode, flesh centaurs that shoot gore grenades at you, and the flying enemies from silent hill 1. Do you see the difference?), but also, you can quick save at any time in Tomb Raider 2, which is great for the most part, but it does have the unintended side effect of completely removing the horror feeling that looming death brought in Tomb Raider 2. If you die in Tomb Raider 2, just reload to where you last saved 30 seconds ago. The secrets in Tomb Raider 2 are, in my subjective opinion, annoying, because if you miss one, you get zero reward for collecting the other 2, you just wasted your time. You have to collect all 3 of them per level in order to get any reward from the secrets. I understand why this was done, its because hunting for secrets in the first game yielded so much loot that the end of the game was largely trivialized, so they tried nerfing secrets by making you really earn the rewards. I just don't get why they did it this way. They could have put caps/limits to how many health kits you could carry, so even if you find more later in another level, you can't carry any more unless you start using them. They could have done the same thing with ammo, so you're not carrying around so much the game is too easy. This would have made players actually use their medkits and ammo instead of hording it, because they are going to run into more, so they can keep replenishing their stashes. It would also mean that you can't just infinitely blast stuff away with your near unlimited ammo by the end of the game, because you are always somewhat limited on how much you can take with you in a fight. They also could have made the 3 secrets per level yield different levels of rewards depending on the rarity of the secret. You found the common secret? Have a small medkit. You found the uncommon secret? Have some uncommon ammo. You found the rare secret? Have a large medkit, some good ammo, and maybe an unlockable vanity item. Oh, you found all 3 secrets in the level? Here, have a bonus reward well worth your time, too! Maybe if you found all or most of the secrets in every level, it would unlock the best weapon in the game for you to use, making the final boss way easier. Alternatively, maybe it would be a pouch that increases how much ammo and medkits you can carry. Something like this would have made the exploration feel much more worth it, compared to just having some of the secrets replaced with 3 collectibles, and if you miss one, tough luck. Again, to summarize , i'm not saying that Tomb Raider 2 sucks and is the worst thing ever, but it feels sooo far removed from so many of the things that made Tomb Raider 1 so good, and yet... so many people say that Tomb Raider 2 is the greatest in the franchise, and that it is better than the predecessor. I play Tomb Raider to feel like i'm... y'know... Tomb Raiding? I don't play it to be a generic action hero blasting mafia cults. Thanks for reading.
I was a boy scout when I was a child despite not actually being apart of that whole thing, I pretty much behaved well, did what I was told and got good grades and it was all just for me to faciliate me playing video games. So much of the shit they teach in you school made me wonder if I was better off being a rebellious drop out but the past is the past. My early gaming career was spent mostly playing the PS2 and 3. I even got my super long lasting PS3 slim I still use to this day because I did so good in school one spring to summer of 2011. As for the older RE games, I might have a bit of an nostalgic connection to the original RE2 since I played it off the PS1 classics section on PS3. However, I prefer RE2 1998 over RE3 1999. I just don't like Nemesis, the guy plays under a completely different ruleset from the one the player follows. He's like if Robocop was fighting against someone who was way faster and more agile than he is like the Flash or Quicksilver. I don't even mind tank controls in older RE games but RE3 was just making me sick of how quick and agile Nemesis moved and my only way to counter was a contextual dodge command, how awesome. Good luck trying to navigate past him when in closed spaces due to the tank controls. I was only able to beat original RE3 at all because contrary to popular belief, Nemesis spends a good chunk of the game being put on a bus, he's not as persistent as some people who are fanboys of him would like you to believe. I do enjoy RE3 to some degree but Nemesis just detracts any enjoyment I get from it everytime he popped up.
Great video. Brings back some nostalgic memories. Feels great to to others have memories like this about the same era. Beautiful video. Like the music also.
Which version of RE2 are you playing in the video footage? I loved to hear your point of view, It's always nice to hear a very authentic/personal perspective of why someone doesn't like a game or something in particular. I felt kinda the same way with the RE4 Reimagination, cuz the original RE4 was something out of this world for the time it came out, and I loved every aspect of the game. So when I played the new one, the QTE was stripped away, the story was changed and they also added a parry, well I guess most people here should know what was changed with that game. So back to the original RE4, I used to play it with my friends where if someone died, then we switch controls. I remember that there is a part in the village where there is a big rock that the Ganados throw at you so you have to run away with a QTE segment, me or my friends used to fail so it was very funny to see who would achieve victory. I also remember the fight with the Del Lago, where a friend killed it and he started to brag about how good he was, but he suddenly got killed by the QTE with the knife on Leon's leg. Also, the fight with Krauser used to be so epic before (both fights), it was one of those moments where our reflexes were to test, so we used to make fun of the one who fails... well, all that funny moments are no more in the new one, and despite some people say "wow this is the best RE ever", I see it like a complete failure. And being very honest, is a good game but not as good as the older version. Also, It was a birthday present from my mom, and more specific, for my brother, cuz both celebrate our birthday the same day (we are twins) and my present was Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.I got so jealous cuz RE4 ended being more fun, it was so incredible and my brother didn't let me play until he finished it like 4 times hahaha... So many good memories.
Thanks for sharing your story! When you said you could play RE2 in your mind, I felt that. I used to play Doom 3 from start to finish in my head. Gosh, I could even remember most of the soundcapes
Just like terminator or alien, the sequel is the bigger more accessible game but for many of us the darker purity of the original will always be the more enjoyable experience.
RE3 ABSOLUTELY deserves far more respect than it receives - such a shame they absolutely BOTCHED the “remake.” By the way, can we even call it a remake? Sony fumbled in a massive way and left SO MUCH on the table with - it was a TRAVESTY to say the least. There should be a petition to demand Sony create a proper remake. I personally would forgive the errors of the past and purchase the game outright. Sony would also enjoy MASSIVE commercial success if they were to pursue such a path. By the way, a proper remake should involve ALL areas, puzzles, and enemies of the original PLUS new areas, puzzles, and enemies. This would allow nostalgia plus ADD value to the gamer experience - let’s make it happen Sony!!
Damn, me and my friends played RE2 when we were an average of about 21 yrs old and we didn’t complete it on one rental. Granted we weren’t chugging soda but you must be naturally gifted. I have a tendency to take my time with games and it took me a good many hours of RE remake to finish it first time and that was about ten years ago
Amazing story. I can really feel and understand the frustration. Please, make more of the videos like these, it is very entertaining to listen for the reasons of ones feelings. If you are comfortable with it of course. Dark souls 1 was like RE1 for you, I never played anything like it before, so it was very intriguing and I totally can relate to that sense of fascination. And funnily enaugh, I had something similar with RE 5 and 7, I wasn't too familiar with the series, but I watched 7 first on youtube when it came out and I was very intrigued, I started to get into the universe and my friend wanted me to try out 5 with him, so I did. I figured it's RE and it is coop, it will be fun and it was. But at the same time I started getting more into the stories of 1, 2, 3, the spinoffs, I never played them, but I was infatuated with the series. I played RE4 which was amazing, then 6 with the friend, which wasn't, but it was okay. And then I figured I'll play 7 myself. I started playing it with my girlfriend, now wife, and it was so enthralling to have this actual survival horror experience for the first time, I was loving it. And that's why it is the favourite for me, kinda becasuse of the order in which I played the games. I bought RE1 remake and I'm very excited to get into it. I can imagine it dethroning RE7 as my favourite.
I enjoyed RE 2 first time i played it, but honestly i like RE 3 og a lot more and is more replayable imo. Felt just straight to the point. Jill's story and the fact it felt like it had a lot more variety in loctions where you could explore all of racoon city. From the steets, to the clock tower, the park, the hospital and the factory. It's one of the reasons i like re 3 more than 2. I like re 2, but i didn't go back to it as much as the 2 scenarios felt a bit repetitive revisiting the same locations, and the majority of the game was spent in the police station.
RE Code Veronica is the hidden gem of the originals, imo. Not sure why it doesn't get the praise I think it deserves. My favorite by far! You should check it if you want an original RE story. First game to give some details about Umbrella in the story.
Well not as traumatizing as your experiece but I also had special plan for the launch of Shredder's Revenge. I wanted to buy a pizza and me and my niece start the game while eating pizza. Unfortunately few days before the launch of the game we moved to a new house in a new neighborhood and in the process I forgot the date. When I realized it is the launch day it was too late. In the new neighborhoid there wasn't any good pizzeria plus my niece couldn't come over either so I started the game alone in a very unceremonious way.
Dog the comments section for this video is crazy LMAO! Ssooo many people exposing themselves in actually not watching the video and or understanding the purpose of your story at all. I guess Mayo thinks the OG RE2 is garbage moving forward - I say lean into it lol. Keep putting out original videos, man. It's more appealing than the everyday slop we get from so many others.
Yeah videos like these are great filters. They expose a lot of dumb dumbs. And a lot of cruel folk too. I just wanted to share one of my favorite stories to tell and give some context as to why RE2 is my least favorite of the trilogy (while still loving it).
Can't wait for Videos to be made clowning on Majo having a subjektive and biased opinion, in the Video where he announced that his opinion was going to be subjektive and biased
i am curious what's your take on FUMITO UEDA games aka ICO, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS & THE LAST GUARDIAN. which are standard game but my god the level or puzzle design is just ground breaking at that time. (yes i know ICO was kinda awkward of holding that girl hand over and over again but the direction was superb)
No wonder why you're always so unhinged. Madman talk about a rough childhood.sorry you went through that. But look at you now. You married and have instilled gaming lessons to many other GO Figure
I used to love playing re3 as a kid, but I never touched re1. The atmosphere and the tension between the rooms.. wayy too scary for me... I did eventually try it after keeping my brother company whilst he played it, and it was great!
Many on the things you said about your childhood playing RE 1 makes me remember mine playing RE 2. Btw I totally recommend that yo play the Outbreak spin off with some friends or with your family. It´s the Racoon City outbreak all over again but from the civilians perspective, would love to see your thoughts on that game!
RE3 is a complete experience with entirely new environments outside of the one wing of the RPD. It had the same amount of time between releases as there was between RE1 and 2 (20 months). And it wonderfully closes the story of Raccoon City. Without RE3, there would still be zombies roaming the streets.
WARNING!
Hell yeah man. I enjoy it.

How old were you when you played RE 2. I was 14.
So, you basically failed at school because you wanted a harder difficulty setting
Mayo just wanted school to be Doom Eternal.
He was quickswapping between exam questions and the RE2 guide.
this idiot didn't know re2 has hard mode and extreme battle. He's just bad as a player.

Apologies, but Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica surpass Resident Evil 2 as a better game in the series.
Resident Evil 3 was peak. I still can't believe how they fucked up the remake, and LITERALLY take best elements from classic 3 to remake of 2.
Yes, they royally fucked us and they'll never fix it.
I said it from day 1, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis needed a remaster not a remake
RE1 had that peak 'creepy mansion' atmosphere. RE3 had peak gameplay, at least in terms of classic REs.
For me Resident Evil 3 is Peak after outbreak 1 and 2
absolutely, the “remake” of 3 was a joke
Misguided parents and the 90s go so well together
I don't blame him for it. It was just bad timing.
You just didn't know the strat. Best strategy would have been to coast at best. They leave you alone, and you don't have to try that hard. Instead you put a big magnifying glass on yourself. Live and learn @@underthemayo

@abisrizvi2621 LOL for real
ngl making an 8 year old go through an increadibly easy test for 3 hours, just to cause mental exhaustion, and then giving possibly difficult questions at the end, where you already lose motivation is such a scammy thing to do. it's pretty obvious they just wanted to prove a point to your dad that you need their program, so they can get money off your parents, and obviously it worked. Heck that strategy would work on some adults.
He was a lot older considering what he is describing.
Still, having a teenager go thorugh this is nuts.
i was thinking the same thing, no kid or teenqger iz going to gaf by the third hour
Yeah whatever this was, it was a scam, 100%. I bet even in a blue moon when a kid managed to pull through and ace the whole test they probably still told the parents some bullshit like "they did okay on the test but we still have concerns". Anything to sucker some 90s parents into wasting thousands of dollars to torment their child.
did we just get mayo villain origin story????
I begged my mam to get me Resi 1 for Christmas after playing it in my friends dad's house.
Then on Christmas morning i ripped open the wrapping paper to a brand new Resi 1 directors cut....
That music still haunts me.

i feel you on the whole schooling thing, dude. my parents tried several times to put me into private schools, the kind where you need to pass a test with higher marks to get into, but i'd always rush through the tests on purpose because i didn't want to be there taking a test, i didn't want to change schools, and i definitely did not want to wear a stupid uniform xD
God I played that L4D demo for like 2 months straight, because I had to wait to get the game for Christmas.
You already complained, and I listened and spilled tears, but I really am bitter that we didn't receive a proper RE3 remake... what a shitshow
Thanks for sharing Mayo, this was a nice meditation on the same period of time I grew up - renting games and the PS1 era.
RE1 is my fave of the originals
Everytime mayo talks about RE I need to beg him to play Code Veronica, the best in the series and My favorite game.

Coder Veronica hands down

Ive played the X version a couple times and I find it makes the story corny because Chris somehow has all the time in the world to defeat Alexia with the Linear Launcher+use an elevator to get back to the getaway Jet.

My feelings exactly. And people wonder why we like that camera style so much.
Its fine content but some of the takes leave a extremely bitter taste in most peoples mouths
"contrarian feeling" dude is literally just a contrarian
I'm a contrarian when I don't like what everyone likes (RE Village) and I'm a shill when I like what everyone likes (RE4 Rename). It just depends on if you personally agree at the time.
Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2 are the peak of the series for me
I'm playing re outbreak file 2 rn for 1st time, can't say I'm enthralled by the single player experience necessarily, gotta play the multiplayer ig, since that's the main focus tho still I was expecting more from the single player, I love the art direction of this Game.
No.
Outbreak is peak. Still dust off the BC Ps3 just to do an annual run of them
Grit your teeth through the crappy AI and unlock Lone Wolf mode. Then play it like a normal RE and you should have a great time.
Online mode was top tier fun, though.
This is just a storytime vid disguised as a pseudo game review
"this is not a review"
This is exactly what he said in the intro the video would be.
... Are you saying the evaluation test puzzles were badly designed?
I really enjoyed your story
You told it so well that it felt like I was there
Your story gave me some nostalgia since it's pretty similar to how I was when I was a kid.
Yeah I misremembered it's been so long
That connection you had with your sister when going through RE1 is special.
Sounds like the definition of abuse to me
I, too, have fond memories of scratched disc audio hilarity. "Op it! On't pen at or!"
There were also new maneuvers to learn as well in both the dodging and shoving system that were introduced as well
4:19 I don’t think they changed the music for the original director’s cut, but for the director’s cut dual shock edition.
I guess I misremembered it was so long ago.
don't really feel you here, but I like the way you made your point. Nice food for thought.

Your father wasn't the problem. You were addicted to video games.
Great video! I loved the insight into your thoughts at the time. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the story.
I don't remember seeing any PS1 game around that time over the price of $49.99 and that's for like a major game. They were all between $20 to $40
It's interesting hoe much the external experiences we have around games, especially during childhood, end up forming our relationships with them in unexpected ways.
7:40 is where the true hatred of Isolations puzzles came from
its easy to forget how much the growing experience of a person can impact their enjoyment of the games they like. for me RE2 being the best of the classics was a no brainer, but that's probably because it was the first RE game that I actually beat (I saw my older brothers play RE1 but it scared me too much for me to play it at the time, being a very small kid, there was a big age gap between me and them) and I beat it by working together with my younger brother, and without a memory card because we lost it after our older brothers moved out. so I essentially had the RE1 experience you had with your sister, but with RE2 and my lil brother. at the end of the day its not just experiencing great games, but experiencing them at the right time in your life.
also about RE3: literally my least favorite of the og 3 because I played it much later in life when my standards for dodge mechanics had already been spoiled by later games. again, timing matters lol

Just playing OG RE2 after 20 Years of "OG Racoon City Zombie Outbrake Hybernation" and now this UtM video lol while RE2 has Flaws(too Easy), like no "Stupid C-Movie Charm like RE1 " and is not as Modern as Re3 Nemesis, it has STILL the

Btw.
Yeah some parents just need to know their children better and let them enjoy their hobbies
Boy did I laugh at "lion, puma, tiger, airplane."
In all seriousness thought hat's, that's a crappy experience.
Hope you're also branching off into the new indie titles. Crow country, Signalis.

Woah bud.. re4 did wonders for gaming as a whole. The remake is absolutely phenomenal
Says the dumb Indian dude lol. GameCube was a good console you mf
Slow down bud, without RE4 there wouldn't be platinum games like Dead Space
Mayo... contrarian feeling? Never
I like your personal stories actually. They are always interesting when you have them.
I can play the originals over and over and over and have fun every time whereas the new games after I've ran through them a few times I'm pretty much bored with it
how can i play these classics today on modern hardware?
(Large comment ahead)
Kind of different, but I feel the slightest bit similarly when it comes to the Tomb Raider franchise.
I went through the same exact trouble when I was growing up, except my obsession was the classic Doom games LOL
Great video. Brings back some nostalgic memories. Feels great to to others have memories like this about the same era. Beautiful video. Like the music also.
WHAT?! Get him, boys!

Would have been clutch if the after-school remedial program was all slide puzzles.
It was.
Just like terminator or alien, the sequel is the bigger more accessible game but for many of us the darker purity of the original will always be the more enjoyable experience.
The older I get, the more I prefer T1 over T2, as much as I love T2. But Aliens will always be my favorite.
As someone who went through something very similar my hat's off to you.
RE2 is the best game ever made
Damn, me and my friends played RE2 when we were an average of about 21 yrs old and we didn’t complete it on one rental.
I can imagine it dethroning RE7 as my favourite.
your little anecdote brought me back to my own childhood. thx for that man ^^
I enjoyed RE 2 first time i played it, but honestly i like RE 3 og a lot more and is more replayable imo.
Re2 is a masterpiece…
I always had more fun playing RE3.

Yeah videos like these are great filters. They expose a lot of dumb dumbs. And a lot of cruel folk too. I just wanted to share one of my favorite stories to tell and give some context as to why RE2 is my least favorite of the trilogy (while still loving it).

i am curious what's your take on FUMITO UEDA games aka ICO, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS & THE LAST GUARDIAN. which are standard game but my god the level or puzzle design is just ground breaking at that time. (yes i know ICO was kinda awkward of holding that girl hand over and over again but the direction was superb)

The best games I've ever played were from PS1 era: RE1,RE2,RE3, Metal Gear Solid and FF7.
RE3 is basically a expansion dlc for RE2, the real RE3 is code veronica.
RE3 is a complete experience with entirely new environments outside of the one wing of the RPD. It had the same amount of time between releases as there was between RE1 and 2 (20 months). And it wonderfully closes the story of Raccoon City. Without RE3, there would still be zombies roaming the streets.
I'm playing RE Director's Cut on PS5. It's awesome.
Those magazine covers man, such a nostalgic trip. I loved the artworks of the time.
