    Awesome idea. It does work people. I put my speaker in an old 8" firecracker drum shell I had laying around. Just a tip though. Put your D112 inside the bass drum about 6 inches away from the beater, then mix the two mics. The internal mic gives you tons of attack that mixes really nice with the big warm sound of the subkick. ;)

    @barkerfan182 With certain kick drums, certain songs, certain genres, certain rooms, you're absolutely right.

    JUST MADE One today, and based it off your video, but we mounted ares in a tom and had the male xlr on the drum just like yamahas, so now we just plug are xlr in the drum, and we mounted are old condenser pencil mic inside the subkick and wired a small xlr next to the other one on the outside like we drilled holes to mount the cables internaly, so now we have an all in one system, we just got done testing it out, it adds so much low end, and it only picks up the bass kick. THANKS FOR THE IDEA!!

    @HipCovers All mics need preamps, not just ones that need phantom power. The point of a preamp is to amplify the signal coming from the mic. When you're doing something like plugging straight into the computer it's got enough gain to work as a preamp, though it's not going to sound terribly great. I'd never plug a drum mic straight into the computer though, you're dealing with high SPLs anyway, not to mention subkicks generally have a pretty high output.

    Cool video, and thanks for the tips n' tricks. I like your playing! Have you tried switching the phase on one either the akg or sub?

    @xalevedi It's a Pearl VBX Birch kit with clear Emperors on it. I've got a Drum Dial but I don't use it, I just do the standard method, loosening everything, tightening everything til it's finger tight, then giving equal turns to each lug until it's the pitch I want it.

    @Irish614 I don't use an outboard mixer, I use a Firestudio Tube (I've got a Firestudio Project as well). I do have a console that's not set up yet, but with that I'll go out of each channel onto each channel of the Firestudio. Yeah I've heard great things about the D6. A subkick is definitely not a necessary thing for every kick sound, and it can even be redundant with mics like the D112. But it's really great if you use a mic that's got great high end (an SDC/LDC maybe) to supplement that.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @543diditwork Not phase issues, it's just not that big of a speaker so it's kind of adding redundant frequencies around 200hz. If it was phase issues then when the mics were together you'd only really hear the top end. Use a bigger speaker for lower frequencies than the D112. That mic picks up pretty low anyway, a subkick is going to be more useful when used with a mic that doesn't pick up as low, like an SDC or SM57 or the like.

    Hey really good video, very clear and concise. I'm definitely going to give this a try, and i'll make up a little cabbinet out of MDF to house it.
    i have 2 Questions, i have an old infinity 10" subwoofer that needs a job, do you think this would be suitable as a subkick, also is this just a standard XLR mic lead you used?

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @cj691 They very well might. Thanks though! I think that the fact that the speaker is relatively small for a subkick makes it pick up a lot of 200hz, which when boosted (from being combined with the D112) kind of has a similar, not terribly pleasant muddy sound, which is a kind of sound that's also easy to get accidentally when things are out of phase. I checked phase, everything was set here. I rarely need a subkick, but next time I'd definitely use a bigger speaker for mine.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @eRealist This has been covered. The phase is correct - I flipped the phase, moved the mics until they cancel the most, and then flipped it back. There are many things you're not taking into account, one being that this is only an 8" speaker, which is boxy anyway in a way that out of phase sounds can be boxy. On top of that you have what RUclips's compression is doing to the sound. Also the speaker is aligned with the capsule, not the very front tip of the grill. Leave it alone.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @aoeria Yes I have, I'm a more than competent engineer! This subkick is just on the small size and tends to emphasize the 100-200Hz area that is generally where things start poking out also when they're out of phase. Phase issues often make things sound boxy, and this happens to just have too much of those boxy frequencies, but it's not because of phase. Next time I'll be going for something bigger than this one was, I don't use it often because of this!

    Great video. Did i hear a bit of In Bloom right at the end? And also would you happen to know if a DIY subkick mic could be used on a bass amp, or on a guitar amp to emphasize low frequencies?

  • @Irish614
    @Irish614 13 лет назад

    Nice sound man, what type of mixer are you using to record? I have a crappy Alesis that can only record 2 channels so I am stuck not being able to eq each mic individually. I use the Audix D6 on my kick and absolutely love the thing, with that mic there is no need for any sub kick mics.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @xalevedi Honestly, I'm not sure. It seems to me like the kick port kind of has a different purpose than a subkick. While both seem to intend to improve bass response, the kick port seems to be more about moving more air in the room, while the subkick is intended to pick up very low frequencies that are at the lower end of what humans can hear. I don't have any experience with the kick port, and I haven't yet seem proof that it's not a "snake oil" product, but that doesn't mean it is!

    @uryeluryel It's a Zildian 22" A Custom medium ride. There's a crash that's in the frame while I'm playing the ride, but you can see the crash moves when I hit it, but not when you're hearing the ride.

    I'll bet if you look really close at the white board the terminals are on, they will have a '+' and '-' pressed into it. Anyway, Nice sound; I cant tell if I just like the AKG or both together. During the first part it sounded like the subkick was out of phase but I really can't tell with just my Sennheiser HD280 cans. Other parts into the video sounded great with both, though.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  12 лет назад

    @jacoboscar79 Thanks! Absolutely, it would actually work significantly better than what I used here. I think most people use 10" speakers. I wouldn't recommend using a 6" speaker like I used, it doesn't give great response in the sub lows that are desired from a subkick.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  12 лет назад

    Good luck with it! I definitely don't mind having this low end for recording but I've never felt confined without sub stuff for live/PA.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @spikeyty That's definitely the easiest way to mount the subkick, just having it in the cabinet. People have used NS10 monitors this way for years. Good luck!

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  14 лет назад

    @Calcard94 I'm def. a big believer in cutting excess low end, often a lot more than someone would expect to. For bass guitar I could agree with saying to cut below 50hz since you're not really perceiving notes that low as much as just feeling low end. So I'd cut that off there, but that leaves a nice hole in the frequencies where the kick "oomph" can sit, without stepping on the bass guitar. But I'd only really use it in music that needs really strong low end like R&B, reggae, maybe metal.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  14 лет назад

    @jakamake 10" might be too big, in that it could pick up only low-end that is too low to hear. It might be fine though, I'd give it a try. Mine is 6" and I wish it were 8" because it picks up more low-mids than I want. If I had a spare 10" speaker I'd try it in a heartbeat!

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @NonSilentKiller Hahahaha great comment! And thanks for the compliment/you're welcome for the instructions!

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  11 лет назад

    I'm sure it does make a difference as the impedance of a microphone or preamp input does affect the sound, but I would imagine since it's for a sound that's not exactly high fidelity it might not be something people worry about too much. NS10 monitors that have been traditionally used for subkicks are 8Ω, so maybe that'd be a good start, but I didn't worry about it.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @mrstudes Thanks! Very cool, I wouldn't expect a 15" speaker to give mostly frequencies too low to be usable. Nice. Yeah a DI is a good idea. Also with a lot of speakers a pad is necessary to not overload the pre.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  14 лет назад

    @ianbhtube The infinity sounds perfect. A speaker made to reproduce sub frequencies will definitely pick them up well. 10" is a great size for that. And yep, it's just a normal XLR mic lead, just instead of the female XLR it's connected to the speaker. An MDF cabinet sounds like it could work nicely, I'd love to see some pictures or a video of that!

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @ilike600baud The particular speaker/size would have to do with this. Some people use up to 15" speakers, those will be much deeper than the D112.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  12 лет назад

    Thanks. Not quite anything from In Bloom here, though I do love In Bloom! I think a subkick should work on a bass amp too, and maybe guitar. It's possible that the subkick works well solely because of the amount of air/SPL hitting the speaker in the subkick and so a bass wouldn't move it, but it's definitely worth a try. It might work but be a bit lower of an output, which wouldn't be a bad thing. If you give it a try let me know what you find, I'd be curious!

  • @543diditwork
    @543diditwork 13 лет назад

    @jessegimbel I never said your mic's were out of phase, I said that a lot of people said that they didn't get a good sound until they reversed the phase. I have no idea why that is, but it wouldn't hurt to try. Perhaps they were double micing at different distances, who knows. What I read seemed to be concerning the construction of them as it said reverse the polarity of the wires going to the speaker. Unfortunately I can't post a link to give an example...

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  12 лет назад

    @blueredfred2 A normal XLR cable does have three wires. You want to join the negative and the ground, so you either solder both the negative and ground to the sleeve of the 1/4" plug, or just put a little jumper wire between negative and ground (generally pins 1 and 3) in the XLR. If you Google "XLR to 1/4" Mono Plug" there's a great little diagram on MediaCollege, it won't allow me to post the link here.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  14 лет назад

    @Bemmel5566 What is "that" that you're referring to that isn't sub? You should clarify what you're trying to pick on here. Yes, 100hz isn't what I'd consider "sub" low, but I never said anything about using a subkick to get 100hz-area lows. If you're having trouble hearing sub lows from this video, it's probably due to poor listening conditions, or RUclips's processing of audio. Yes this subkick picks up around 100hz, but also lower. Bigger speakers will also pick up lower, I'd recommend 8-10".

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @xalevedi Do you mean a recording gig or live gig? For live sound I think they'd have a pretty different effect on the sound. I'd love to hear what you thought of a before and after with the kick port

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

    @543diditwork Phase trouble is caused by mic placement - one sound hitting two mics at slightly different times. When two mics are close like in this, they're not going to be 180 deg. out of phase (when flipping the phase would fix it). But in my demo they're in phase. And like I said, it's because of the speaker I used that there's a boost at 200hz. It says in the video I used a 6" speaker - I'd recommend bigger. And this is just a demo, yes 200hz isn't too useful for kick in a mix.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  14 лет назад

    @pabloAXMO I'm not sure what you're asking..if you're looking for how an actual speaker puts out sound, you'd probably be best looking it up on something that can explain the sciences accurately. If you're asking how to make the subkick, it's all in the video, I don't know how to explain it any better. As far as how it functions, the sound from the kick drum pushes the speaker back which transfers energy back through the cord to what you have it plugged into.

  • @theVomitorium
    @theVomitorium 14 лет назад

    Sounds like the two mics on your kick are not quite in phase. When they are combined their is a lot less low end. Everything else on your kit sounds great though.

  • @543diditwork
    @543diditwork 13 лет назад

    @jessegimbel Then maybe its youtube or something, or, as you said, the frequency of the subkick boosts at 200hz. What size speaker are you using? From everything I read 6-8" is about ideal and will boost around 50hz. And when I said phase issues, I didn't mean from mic placement. A lot of people say you have to reverse the polarity to get the sound your want. If you haven't tried it, you may want to check it out, can't hurt. Besides, 200hz is rarely a desirable freq. to boost in your kick

  • @543diditwork

    I sounds like you have phase issues. The sub kick should add low end, but I definitely hear the D112 as sounding fuller and lower.

  • @jeffreymiddelveld4421
    @jeffreymiddelveld4421 9 лет назад

    Cool man! I also use both a D112 and a 15" subkick. In stead of placing both of the mic in front of the head, I placed the D112 inside to increase the punch.

    • @jessegimbel
      @jessegimbel  9 лет назад

      Jeffrey Middelveld Sounds good! That 15" probably does a way better job of getting subs than the puny speaker in my video.

    • @jeffreymiddelveld4421
      @jeffreymiddelveld4421 9 лет назад +1

      Jesse Gimbel Well, I installed it quite different. Like I said, the D112 stimulates the high frequencies which makes it sound more defined in a mix. I can send you some samples if you like. Natural and EQ'd samples of course, so you can here what you can do afterward.

  • @edrdrums
    @edrdrums 12 лет назад

    Matt, I'm not quite following how you incorporated the "pencil condensor" into the subkick. Any chance you can explain, maybe send a pic? The subkick was amazing, but having 2 mics on stage was a bit of a pain. Thanks!

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  12 лет назад

    I'd say no smaller than 8". I used a 6" (which was a crappy car speaker, at that), and you can see how many people mistakenly think there's a phase issue, when it's really because it's boosting mids in a weird spot and isn't getting a ton of low end. I'd think 8-12" would be ideal.

  • @jessegimbel
    @jessegimbel  13 лет назад

  • @jessegimbel

    Absolutely not! A lot of people have traditionally used NS10s (monitors), one of the most annoying things about using a subkick is finding a good way to mount it, so leaving it in the cabinet would solve that problem, as long as the amp has a big enough speaker.

  • @StephenTack

    After years of improvising sub-kicks, I have come to the conclusion that it's not as much the size of the speaker as the speakers intended use...the speaker suspension tension and the weight of the element.
    I've had great results with 6.5" speakers that have a loose suspension. Gently tap the speaker, if you hear a clear tone, that's not ideal (unless it's really low, and/or the same frequency as your kick).
    Also mounting the speaker in a tube can "tune" it to different frequencies. Experiment!

  • @theycallmegodkid
    @theycallmegodkid 11 лет назад

    Your preference to have no sound hole? It may help your sound of your kick. It sounds very classic, like an old jazz kick. If that's what you're going for, awesome, but maybe the subkick will get more out of having a sound hole and so would your AKG. Just my opinion anyway. Will have to test it at home. :)
