Elsewhere is Byrne's swan song, and while I'm not crazy about all his writing decisions, it's still an impressive chunk of work. I would definitely pick this up in a finished book format.
It's a shame the comic industry has always, and still does, throw away veteran creators.

Byrne did a fantastic, completely underrated job writing the Mandarin, elevating him to A lister archvillain status during his Iron Man run (The Dragonseed Saga). Without rushing, issue after issue, he organically infused his character with complexity and a certain nobility. Of course, not long after that, Marvel let the Mandarin's potential go to waste and much of Byrne's storytelling became undone.

Elsewhen is John Byrne's ideas on what he'd do with the Uncanny X-Men. It takes a point in the early days of these all new X-Men, and then goes from there. John Byrne left The Uncanny X-Men, because he had wanted to do things with the X-Men that was different than what Claremont wanted to do.

Marvel should do whatever it takes to get Byrne back, active. Print, in the best possible formats, the X-Men: Elsewhen series as well as reprinting his “The Last Galactus” story that he did in Epic magazine, but was never permitted to complete. Reprint the story and let Byrne finish it. These two projects alone would seriously begin to fill up Marvel’s dwindling coffers of shekels as far as the comic book publishing is concerned. That, and the great degree of positive attention all this would bring to Marvel shouldn’t be underestimated. Then, let Byrne pick his party - whatever he wants to do -- and give him unfettered creative freedom. Money talks, and Byrne could have the higher ups at Marvel ( Disney ) listening, in my opinion.

THIS could be THE MAJOR REASON why Marvel will never pick up ELSEWHEN:
JB: I have been pitching a Demon series every couple of years or so since I first went to work for DC "full time" in the days of MAN OF STEEL. With a "new regime" in the form of Dan DiDio, I decided it was time to try again, but this time, knowing Dan comes from a Hollywood background, I decided to take a slightly different approach. To this end, I sat down and "shot the pilot", drawing, completely on spec, the whole 22 pages of my "first issue". This I turned in to Dan, along with a script. He liked it -- but there was a problem. DC has a new policy (DC seems to be in love with new policies, just at the nonce) which requires that all work done with existing characters be vouchered before the work is done. (Smart, I suppose -- prevents people popping up later and trying to say work-made-for-hire was not, in fact, work-made-for-hire.) This meant they could not use the "pilot"

The reason why John Byrne is known for its X-Men run because it’s the greatest X-Men run of all time. Everything else, from Chris Claremont, endless decades of writing it, to the various artists, to the franchise it became… None of that, and I mean absolutely none of that tops, the momentum that Dave Corcoran started, and John Burroughs finished in the Phoenix saga, and then days of future past. Those top two runs back to back from each other. We’re not about selling more books it was about tell me a great story with a writer/artist/creative force that were at the top of his game. Outside of things, like dark knight, daredevil with Frank Miller, and lesser things like future imperfect with Joyce Perez, and even the Bucyk and George Perez work of the avengers relaunch… None of that is interesting and John Byrne is number one of the top X-Men traders of a Hall of Fame list of creators.

John Byrne is better than 90% of comic artist alive today. No one is buying these books because of illustrations. No one’s buying these books for glossy Photoshop. They are buying them for stories and storytelling is his forte and if he was able to get a great project that he allowed to take his time in the vein of Alex Ross, he went below the credible work of Alex Ross to smithereens.
Hopefully your take on the Disney wanting to do more of what Alex Ross dead will realize that characters like John, as well as Simonson, and even other legends are available to drop a nice truck could change to, and allow them to show the entirety of this industry how real comics are done

He has his distinctive style that works very well with his story telling. The art really tells the story it’s supposed to do. Furthermore, his Marvel characters just have this classic look to them, they really do feel as if they looked always like this. For me it’s like seeing his art style immediately brings a smile to my face, because I know I‘m in for something good.

If they actually were the ones who passed on it that’s head exploding that they’d just leave money on the table like that?!? Could you imagine an imprint where they had this plus Miller back on Daredevil, Simonson on Thor, etc? Byrne and Claremont’s run on Xmen was so important in such a myriad of ways. This stuff is such a fan’s dream come true. And let’s face it: Byrne earned the right to be cantankerous a long time ago. I can't agree more with you saying John Byrne would outsell the current marvel X-Men and other marvel comics. One thing I realized is that he doesn't even need Chris Claremont and that, when they were working together on Uncanny X-Men, his contribution not only was unique and smashing evocative in terms of his Art but he was also contributing to the stories and depth of characters, way, way more than I had been aware of before. X-Men were realistic in a fantastic world and fantastic in a realistic world. That's been dead for decades now... That's what made their cult and popular success, that's what made them from contenders to Marvel's trademark and that's what has been lost. I'm 54, I've read X-Men since 1976, both in France, where I'm from and in USA and now, when I take any issue... but those where Dave Cockrum and then John Byrne worked on. When I found out about Elsewhen I "jumped" on it and I found back the X-Men.

New leadership needs to be put in place that knows how the publishing business works, and isn't hampered by ego. C.B. If a smaller indie guy, like myself, were to reach out to these artists how likely would it be that I would just get ignored or told to go ---- myself, even if I were able to meet their financial demands?

See I never read the X-Men until I was 17. I missed the dark Phoenix saga. The drug store didn't get that one. My first John Byrne was during the Fantastic Four run, and She-Hulk. met hi twice. He was a jerk both times. Once to me once to a kid. Still a legend. Got me to read Superman 😊

Based on Marvel's current sales numbers of classic creators I don't think Byrne's X-Men would be the slam dunk you think it would be. That's not to say any of it is bad, just that Byrne's name doesn't have the cache it once had. The X-Men Legends sales numbers seem to suggest there isn't as much desire for these creators as we would hope.

In response to this, is more the fact that the issue format for many is outdated, and we wait for the collected edition. thats what i did for peter davis's maestro saga recently, and also for Legends.

It'd make more sense to bring in Byrne and Claremont to that upcoming Days of Future Past prequel, but that's been farmed out to someone else.
But that's ripe for a Peter David of Maestro type of revisit, sure.

@@unodestosdiaz2998 Which would be great if the trades moved the needle past their initial release week. It's largely academic as Marvel isn't going to publish Elsewhen but I suspect that the series wouldn't last past a dozen or so issues. I'm also basing my opinion on the abysmal reception to Byrne's The Hidden Years.

I ran across Byrne’s Elsewhen around 3 years ago and thought it was great. I wondered at that time why Marvel didn’t pick it up and my local comic shop guy basically said the same thing back then. It all comes down to ego and not the giant planet sized head.

So we know why Byrne is blacklisted by DC and Marvel but why do even the indies refuse to work with him?
They throw money at Rob Liefeld for an unimaginative cover but Byrne gets ignored.
Did Byrne piss off the entire industry?

The last corporate work Byrne did was at IDW, he did a bunch of Star Trek books there, I got a bunch of his Star Trek photo-collage books which were excellent but I think sales eventually tailed off.
I just think Byrne is done with editors and "the business" plus indy companies probably just couldn't afford him, he can get like 4k per page for a commission, what company can give him a page rate even a sizeable fraction of that?

I think having any of the aforementioned Legends do a book a month they would outsell the current Marvel books and put many of the new creators to shame. Marvels editorial staff are too fragile to accept such a challenge. It would also signal to Disney hire ups that the new crop of creators aren’t that good at what they do. I say, let the bloodletting begin and start firing a ton of people and replace them with many of the older creators. I’ve been disappointed with Marvel story telling for quite a while now, I just hope the people in upper management in Disney do the right thing and get Marvel back to basics.

Mark Millar keeps pulling in the newer talent lately, but why couldn't he try going to veterans like Byrne, Smith, Silvestri, etc. and get them to do a series with him, show the Big Two how it's done? Imagine the sales!

Bingo! Nail on the head. I sold all my X-Men after #200 because the characters seemed to lose their personalities. And events suck. I think you are also correct about squealing Marvel. If they published Elsewhen, and it sold really well, they would look a bit funny considering the barely coherent shlock they put out currently. I wouldn't be surprised if da' rodent sells them off in the next 8 years.

When the jets signed Tim Tebow to be their third string QB and the team immediately went into the toilet under the first stringer, the head coach refused to play Tebow in those meaningless late season games when they were already out of the playoff running… because if Tebow had won then the coach would look like an idiot for not playing him earlier.

I'll say it: I don't like Byrne coming up with an origin for Wolverine where Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X already exists. To the extent he had this origin in mind before Weapon X was published, it doesn't matter. Weapon X made it to print first when Byrne had been off the book for years.
I'm less fond of the Jenkins/Kubert origin book, but it's grown on me in recent years.

Could be that controversial thing he said about Jessica Alba and Hispanic women. Quick Google search could find it I'm sure. That can't help the chances of it getting published. I guarantee the comics news sites would jump on that immediately.
