- The underspin is a lure every bass fisherman should own! When bass are chasing smaller baitfish, an underspin paired with a swimbait outfishes virtually every other lure. Today we're showing you the differences between these heads, and when you should be fishing each style.
With all the different swimbaits and underspins on the market, how do you know which models to use? Tim breaks them down into categories and gives you the best options for the conditions you'll face this Fall.
Below you'll find links to all the baits and heads in the video. We've also included some of our favorite rod and reel combos for this technique. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Had the pleasure of meeting Tim out in the water this weekend. I was up the river on parksville and noticed a boat running up the river towards me. As soon as he saw me in my small aluminum boat he completely throttled down to an idle while most boats would fly by without any consideration. As he was passing I noticed it was Tim and gave a thumbs up. He shut his motor down and took the time to say hello and thanked me for watching the videos. He was fishing with his son so I didn’t want to take up his time but was thankful to have been able to say hello, a true class act on and off the water!
Hell yeah man! Lucky as heck!
Good dude for sure,
I have respect for anybody that takes other other fisherman into consideration while their fishing , many dont.....
Class act! Humble and never forgetting where he came from. Good to see that the on screen personality matches the off screen🤟🏼
Good to read this
I caught my PB yesterday on an underpin. Using a Kitech. In 1 hour of bank fishing I caught 7 bass. Crushed it.
I've never had any luck fishing in September until this yr thanks to you guys. I've never really liked fishing Flukes but made myself do it because of you guys and it hasnt disappointed. I also had some success of the free rig thanks to you guys. Thanks for all the info you give us.
Last season me and my brother hit Pickwick at the beginning of fall when they're in transition and kind of difficult to get to bite. No one was catching anything to speak of- we talked to several other boats, and everyone had pretty much the same story- found the fish but can't get them to bite. So I put on an underspin, which is my go-to when they're not biting great- down sized to the little 2.8 on n Down Under underspin - but they still wouldn't touch it. So, on a whim I changed out to a little larger underspin and tried a Deps Frilled shad- the change was like night and day. All the sudden I was getting hit like every other cast. I caught everything from catfish to bass to drum- and all I know to credit it to is that the frilled shad has a kind of weird action- and a different profile- it's not a paddle tail. It has a very realistic action to it though- and I had a very natural, green pumpkin like color- it worked like gang busters. My brother put one on and he had the same results. It really proved to me though that subtle changes can make a huge, huge difference. I never would've thought changing from one under spin to another that was that similar would make such a difference.
September has been my best month this year! Love fall transition!!!!
Thanks Tim. I hadn't seen the beast hook type underspin. I'll put a few in the cart
👏👏thank you Tim,GREAT job buddy ❤❤
Thanks for sharing Tim
I mostly fish for smallies on a rocky river, and the 3.5" swammer with 1/8 owner flashy has been the most consistent lure for me, and it's not even close. Thanks for getting me on the swammer! It's great.
Free rig a river rock jakes craw in chocolate sapphire. Use 1/8th ounce tunsten round eye sinkers or smaller and place a bobber stop in between the hook and weight (reverse Carolina rig). It’s my top confidence bait. Spring through winter. Nothing else comes close.
Thanks. I'll have to try it out.@@rhodesianhunter9360
@@rhodesianhunter9360 What kind of hook do you use on it?
Cut off the end of the swimbait tail and use one of those screw in tail spinners and put that on the back of the swimbait. Adds more flash and vibrations and attracts them better than having the paddle tail
They did start making 3.5” Easy Shiners. Used to only be like 2 or 3 colors. I used to get them in Bluegill Flash.
But looks like TW is carrying almost every color now. Just noticed that.
4.8 fat swing on a 5/0 flashy swimmer is still a top producing bait for me. Favorite tactic is to get it stuck and pop it free. Really fun.
Kinda underspin adjacent for BFS, is the Megabass Screwhead. (thing is almost cheating it works so good)
Great video as always Tim. Thanks.
Just started throwing BFS and man it’s all I want to do now. I’m in love. Gonna try the 2.8 keitech this weekend. I’ve been throwing the small mega bass cranks with great success so far. It’s really hard to put down and throw my regular stuff 😂
Had a blast using them yesterday caught 20 Good fish finding lure
Thank you Tim.
Just bought one at Fish Tales in Cleveland before watching your video .Looks like I bought one at the right time.
the underpin is one of my favorite baits to throw this time of year. but the chaterbait has been currently outdoing it over here in Illinois. im sure as the weather gets a bit more crisp itll kick into high gear
The Owner Flashy 1/0 with the Largo Shad or Spark Shad are my go to! I can throw them on my Slx Mgl a mile! Probably my favorite technique!
This bait is FIRE 🔥 right now!!!
Have y'all tried the Core Tackle TUSH head yet? Good stuff for me. Not an underspin, but a cool way to throw a swimbait.
Have you guys tried the newish 6th sense axle underspin heads? They are really really good, the hook on both styles are great. My favorite 1 in the weedless version
Hi Tim, Great information! Quick question - What are the hook keepers you are using now? Thanks as always!
I like to take the buckeyes lures under spin and a ez shiner and swing it back to the boat with a slow reel to keep a small bow in the line and just watch for the line to jump and feel the tick
The zappu bredy weedless under spin is a good option for BFS fishing. I have the 1/16oz #2 size hook and throw the 2.8 keitech.
I really like that cps pin on the flashy swimmer, the thing will not pull out after multiple fish.
Gonna try the dirty jigs underspin for the first time this year. The cool baits caught me so many fish the past couple years
We discovered the cool baits many years ago and also caught countless fish on it. We know you're going to love our underspin from the start because you'll immediately notice your trailers lasting longer 👍🏼
👍👍Its got a nice bait keeper
They make a 3.5” ez shiner, my man! It’s my go to size. Pro tip, lol put that sucker on a Tokyo rig and flip it to fish on Livescope in place of a hover rig or dropshot. They love the different look, I’ll catch them that way when everyone else is struggling to get bit on typical flatworms, sonar minnows, jerk shadz etc
Funny I was just sitting here wondering what I was gonna try first this morning and this video popped up. So I guess I'm throwing an underspin.
Have you ever tried the Megabass Uoze swimmer? Its a swim jig combined with an underspin. Thoughts?
My favorite underspin is the 6th Sense Divine underspin. Tied ON all year long. Still not sure about the BFS gear. The cost of the limited number of rods and reels makes me leery. It’s out if my price range now. Might have to wait a couple years for more companies to enter the BFS game.
Those mini underspins you guys made are hands down the real deal. I loaded up on them....Dont really need any other mini underspins now. Can we get the screw locks on those soon?
They work great but roll easier on a faster retrieve than a coolbaits. Also heavier because of the wire keeper holding the blade. Both AR still great.
Underspin szn is always the best. Been catching them on the mini max chatterbait as well
Thanks for the video.
I really only use an underspin, work, and jerk bait because the rest fail me
I see the different weight recommendations but what do you recommend Tim for the size hooks based on the length of the swimbait? Usually I use a 3/0 for 3” baits and a 4/0 for 4” size baits but I see you recommend the 5/0. Is this for the 4.6-4.8” swimbaits?
For those that love underspins give the Deeks Dead spin a try. I’m not sure what it is but that Deeks Dead spin is killer. Paired with a Little dipper or Keitech. it gets it done.
Do you find underspins are lethal in winter time as well or do you recommend just using a regular swimbait head?
They make the 3.5” easy shiner in some colors. I have a half dozen packs in the boat now 😂
Underspins are my go to ,but companies almost never say how big the hook is with the Underspin in the product description.
I throw the 1/8 or 1/4 oz guppy and largo on a shimano Aldebaran paired with a Dobyns champion XP 702 on 12lb fluro and i can bomb it a friggin mile...same with a shaky head...prob more expensive than most bfs setups but it gets it done
Succesfull my friend
If you could only have 2 combinations of under spin head and swimbait, what would they be?
Hi Tim huge fan get it buddy
I’ve been using flashy swimmer all summer, on the CA Delta. One on a BFS with 3.3 Keitech and another on a MH with a horny Toad. They’ve been killin it.
Yup
Would 15lb Sunline assassin be strong enough to set the hook on the dirty jigs Pitchin jig
Absolutely
I have the feeling that I’m going to have to send the guys a few packs of zappu bredy weedless underpins. They a tiny #2 and #3 that go down to 1/32. Some real BFS weedless swimbait.
No way, keep those a secret please! Those things are a legitimate cheat code
Anyone tried taking the skirt off a double willow spinnerbait, and using a keitech or similar style swimbait? Seems it be a decent bait in fall...may try that this weekend..Booyah i think makes a 4 bladed spinnerbait, paired with a Keitech seems interesting to try
I haven’t taken the skirt off but I throw all my spinnerbaits with some kind of swimbait on them. Usually a keitech or largo shad
@@stephenallen6741 I took the skirt off a booyah, 3 willow leaf bladed spinnerbait, paired with a silver flash 3.3" keitech...I gotta say, it looks really good....definately plan on trying it real soon
@@andybales7318 good luck and it’s a good time to throw something like that. I’ve gotten to wear I like the keitech easy shiner in pro blue shiner. It looks good on a spinnerbait, chatterbait, or an underspin
You said largo shad but it was a swammer. Both are fantastic baits.
Yep 🤦♂️ I got it right later... its tough when the mouth is going as fast as the brain 😂
No worries just incase someone else needed to know the right bait. I'm sure it happens often talking into the camera.
I throw the 3.5" Easy shiner all the time. Theres literally a bunch of core colors to chose from?? I
like the tactical underspin but it's heavier than a cool baits. The 3/16oz is heavier than a 3/16oz coolbaits. Yes the bait keeper works well but it's heavier because of the wire holding the blade. I throw it on a 6'10" med with no issues and I use the coolbaits on my med light 6'10" Zodias. Also doesn't run at faster retrieves like the coolbaits. It tends to roll over. The coolbaits can get away with a 3" easy shiner if you chose and its sleeker design is smaller than the 1/8th oz Tactical underspin.
They make a 3.5in easy shiner unless they discontinued em :(
What's y'all's tip for not losing baits to gar? I've lost 50 dollars in Crankbaits in one trip.
They broke into my truck and stole all my rods and baits and lures etc 😢2k plus in stuff gone now I feel like a beginner again they stole so many of those tactical underspins I bought so many 😞
Hey Matt and Tim are you believers in christ
