Hi Eric, thank you for making this video. What would you do in the case of a skirt that has a flat front waistband but an elastic back? I’ve been able to make the pattern for the front, but I’m unsure how to go about making a pattern for the back.
On the back of the skirt at the hip and at the bottom, they should be easy to do. But at the waist you want to stretch the waist as far as it can go and measure it, using the tape measure. For this you really would be better to use a yard stick. You can also have another person stretch it for you and you should measure. Never trust others for the measuring, just you. Then you should be ready to rock and roll. Happy pattern back making.
This is just the video I need thank you so much. Can I ask is the paper you are drawing the pattern on a special kind and does the tracing wheel damage the original skirt? Thank you Karen
The paper used is called Manila paper and come on a roll from Amazon. The tracing wheel will not damage your garment. The tracing wheel is a very pointed one. Happy skirt cloning. EWS
Thank you for your question, I chose not to add the darts in that design, because I was going to make other patterns from this skirt pattern. However, to make the darts in the front and back. You would use the lines that are coming from the center front and center back coming down the length of the skirt top to bottom. On these lines measure down 3-1/2 inches from the waistline that would be your dart fold lines. The dart is angled from the waistline a quarter inch from the fold line to the 3-1/2 inch mark and you would sew directly on that angled line. You would back stitch at the top 1/4 inch and at the 3-1/2 mark making your darts. The darts on the skirt are only for design and not for fit. You can add them or not, your choice. Thank you again for the nice question. EWS
The front is put on the fold and the back is in 2 pieces. However; if you wanted the skirt to zip on the side, then front and back can be placed on the fold. This is only done after a sample muslin skirt has been made and tried on. Thank you for your question. MR. EWS
Thank you! Just what I needed to duplicate a good fitting skirt , using a better quality fabric.

What about darts that were on the original skirt?

Are the main skirt pieces cut on the fold or cut 2 of each?
