Only if they didn't mind a visit from their parents at school... and probably a sore behind. Maybe even a sudden trip back home as well. This is the 1800's after all. Parents were a lot stricter back then. That said, even in our time you would need to be crazy to do that.
I can only imagine someone like Sirius Black sending a howler back home to his mother. He'd be crucio'd for sure.

I kind agree but then again, that is what? the 1800's and during that time Muggles in Britain were certainly dirty and certainly liked to eat things that may poison themselves. Given the fact that the mother had enough money to use an owl during that time to someone who wasn't her daughter, and someone she has yet to meet, yeah, the mother certainly has enough money to try to buy some "stocking" colored food especially to impress someone like a rich and close friend of her child. Hence it is a good thing the mother did not accept
This I know after having watched a bit too many videos on the history of poisonous stuff in England, such as paint, the evolution of food and so forth.... So in the mother's defense, that is hardly the century to go around being around muggles at supper time since either they are dirty or they are clean but will feed you something thinking to impress that will make you end up in saint mug os, and the shame of going to saint mug os for a perfectly avoidable thing.

I wish magic like the kind in Harry Potter was real; I know quite a few people who I would love to be able to jinx, hex, and even curse. Things like the Bat-Bogey Hex and the slug spell mind you, nothing like Sectumsempra or any of the more malicious spells. I wish a number of the potions mentioned in the series were real too, especially considering the amount of liars where I live. Veritaserum would definitely come in handy then.

OK...that one was deserved. Yes, he (and Harry) were not thinking correctly and obviously panicked... and they were also just young children as well, but even so...
At least Ron should have known better that flying a car in broad day light is a huge offense. Harry too...when you consider that the boys already got told off once for taking the car earlier. (And the fact that Harry should know that only adults are supposed to drive cars from his muggle upbringing)
But at least in his case not thinking about the consequences or waiting for/trusting an adult is understandable. He was after all always told to not ask questions and to stay in his room all the time. As such thinking about asking an adult for help would probably have been far from his mind.
Considering Arthur Weasley would have been in big trouble about this at the ministry Ron was lucky it was only a howler he got.
